Schoney: Hi Mr. Mickelsen. How are you? Thank you for calling me. Mickelsen: Well I understand you have been trying (laughing). Schoney: I have, just so you know. I want to be fair and hear so side of this whole thing. But if it is alright with you, I would like to record the phone call. M: That s fine. Schoney: Great. In that case, what I am going to do is, I am going to tell this little recorder the case number then I am going to get a little bit of identifying information from you if that is o.k. M: That s fine. Schoney: O.K. This is case number 0, and this is Detective Schoney, Salt Lake PD. It is 1:0 hours and I am speaking to Lynn A. Mickelsen. Um. What is your date of birth? M: July 1 st, thirty five. Schoney: July 1 st, thirty five. O.K. what s your address there? Office address is great or you have a Salt Lake City address you d like to give me? M: Oh man that s easier Schoney: Okay. Let s go with that M: East South Temple Schoney: Okay. East South Temple. That works. Alright. You re aware of the allegation that your granddaughter has made? M: Yes. Schoney: What can you tell me about those? M: Well, I guess the only thing I can tell you about them is that. They, they re absolutely false, and I assume that uh, the uh, the genesis of it is in the uh, comes from her father who has taken up, who uh, who has taken up a vendetta against us because of the divorce between him and Jean. Schoney: Okay. And in talking go Jean today, she indicated that s a pretty messy deal. 1
M: It s really ugly, and it s unfortunate because we are uh, losing our grandchildren over it. S: Yeah. M: But uh, I, we haven t known what to do to change that. Perhaps this will help. S: Well, I hope so. Uh. She, Kylee had told me, and I just want to let you know what she had said that she had sat on your lap, and that you had rubbed her thigh over the top of her cloths about six or seven times. Um, She also said, and forgive me, but she noticed you had an erection, yeah, because it was just like her ipod that she carried I her back pocket. So M: Interesting (laughing) S: Yeah (laughing) Did any of that ever happen? So I can just ask that question (laughing) and get it out of the way (laughing). M: No. Absolutely not. S: Okay. I knew you were going to say that. (Loud laughing) M: Uh. Ya know. Uh. The unfortunate thing about this is that uh, that, that the, the, the alienation of our children, or, or our grandchildren are under these circumstances is just tragic. Uh S: It is. M: To not be able to, to tenderly love them and take care of them like we would like to, but uh anyway. S: Um he has also made an allegation that you also had inappropriate activity with Jean. M: Um, I am sure that Jean would uh, would uh, tell you that that is absolutely false as well (interrupted by Schoney) S: Good. M: That there was never anything like that. We have six daughters. S: Uh huh?
M: And uh, and uhhhh, all six of them would uh, would confirm that there s never been anything, uh of that nature. S: Okay. Can you, can you describe your relationship with Ron Karren before all of the divorce thing started to happen. M: I thought we had a fabulous relationship. Although I knew there were some tensions in the marriage. We had a fine relationship. As a matter of fact, I invited him to take a principal part in a Real Estate Development we were doing in Idaho. S: Uh-huh. M: That was the first time that I became aware of his erratic behavior because he just flew apart. He started telling my partners up there what to do and became so insolent about it, they just said uh, we don t need him around here any more. S: Alright. How long ago was that you started noting the erratic behavior? M: Oh, I think that has always been the case with him. He is very charismatic, you know, uh, we loved Ron and still love him, in spite of this, uhhh. Maybe I am giving you too much background now, but uhhh. S: No. That s okay. I am curious to know who has been the progenitor of all this. So M: Well, his..um, his father, not his biological father, but uh, his mother s husband (laughing), came to work for us years ago, actually when uh, Ron was born while they were working for my father. S: Uh-huh. M: On the farm. Uh. Ron is uh, I don t know, uh I uh, I guess this is part of this. Because of a uh, uh, an illicit relationship, uh, his biological father was not her husband. S: Uh-huh. M: And then a divorce came after that, and we had a very close relationship with his mother, and still do: helping them, counseling, and uh, when it came time, uh Ron just kind of left the family working
in the oil fields up in Montana. Um, He uh, came to our place on Thanksgiving because we knew he was alone: We called him and asked him to come. That resulted in me working with him to send him on a LDS Mission, uh, He came home, came come to us in effect, and uh, we have had a very close relationship over the years, that s the way it has been, we ve had a close relationship, still do with his mother from whom he has had total alienation for or 1 years. S: Uh-huh. Okay. M: So. So those are, ya know, You know it s been a close relationship uh, uh, I uh, we know all about his past. S: Okay. M: And we have taken him in as a son. In fact when I have talked to him I have told him that because he, uh, he has, because of his lack of a father in effect, I said, uh Ron, we consider you as a son. We love you like a son, and you belong to us, but uh, anyway. No good deed goes unpunished. (laughing) S: Yeah. I know. (laughing) I m sorry. Oh my gosh. Okay. Well, um, I can t think of too many other things to ask you about. You ve denied this and the interview that I had with Kylee this morning, um, I did not feel there was any merit to the allegations, but because of these kinds of allegations, I still have to take this case to the district attorney s office, and I am going to take it in and I am going to ask them to decline to prosecute. I don t think there is any way they would file on it anyway, there is no merit to the thing. M: Yeah. S: So M: Well I appreciate that, and I uh, I hope that uh, I don t know if you received the, the stack of s that Ron has been sending to Jean. S: I have those.
M: There are other allegations by him that I uh, that I allegedly had a, had a inappropriately touched, uh, perversely touched Debbie Andrus Landon and also our daughter Karen. I don t know where those things came from uh in his mind, But anyone, any of these would be willing to testify, and uh, and of course deny those allegations. S: Yeah. Well uh, I m not so much concerned about that part of it as I am concerned about your granddaughter. M: Well I am too. S: I am just following through. However, it may turn out that, I can call Jean to find out how to get in touch with the other individuals on that, um, so I don t want to have to burden you with worrying about that right now. So uh, we ll kind of follow through, um Ron because he is part of this is going to come in for an interview on Monday, and we ll see just how he behaves when he gets here. I am anticipating an interesting meeting with him (laughing) so M: Well, you know uh, I, uh, I hope uh that it would be cordial, but uh obviously from the tone of his s uh, uh, he can also uh be very vindictive and hateful, so uh S: Well, uh, I expect him to behave that way, so M: Well he may not, I uh, uh, he s, uh, he s a very charismatic and likeable person. S: Uh-huh, A lot of people like that are, aren t they. M: (Both laughing) M: Well, anything I can do to help, uh, I m happy to do that. S: Well thank you very much, I appreciate that. Your wife has got my name and phone number. If you have any questions, you are always welcome to call me. I am in and out of the office a lot so I can call you back (laughing) okay? M: Okay. Well, you feel free to contact any member of the family would like to, we re uh, we don t have any secrets about those kinds of things.
S: (laughing) okay. M: (laughing) S: Thank you so much. M: Alright S: You take care. M: Thank You. Shoney: Okay. M: Bye. S: Bye-bye
