Papers #73 Hiram E. Papers II The collection contains early photographic images (daguerreotypes and glass plate s) dating from 1851 to They include images of people and places in Hunterdon County. Many are unidentified and are thought to be of the family. Biographical Notes: Hiram E. was born in Stockton, NJ on May 20, With his family he moved to Pittstown in 1879 and because of poor health was educated by private tutors until he attended public school at the age of nine. He was considered academically gifted, far beyond his age. After moving to Flemington Junction with his family in 1884 he finished his elementary education at the Reading Academy. In 1888 he entered the Peddie Institute in Hightstown, NJ, and graduated with honors in He met his wife, Eva Taylor, while at Peddie, marrying on September 27, They had four children. For the remainder of his life he lived at his farm, Minneakoning, where he became an active member of the County Board of Agriculture and various other organizations such as the local Grange and The Dairymen s
3 Photos League. Because of his interest and involvement in agriculture he was appointed as a Cooperative Weather Observer by the US Weather Bureau in, serving for over 50 years. Hiram E. became a prominent figure both locally and internationally. His interests ranged far and wide. He was heavily involved in the Genealogical Society of Jersey and upon his death he bequeathed much of his research to the Hunterdon County Historical Society, where he served as librarian for 67 years until Internationally he garnered fame as a philatelist, and was enrolled on the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists by the Royal Philatelic Society. He had similar fame in the American Numismatic Society. He also published The Jerseyman, which contained local genealogy and history. He also formed the largest and finest collection of bookplates in the world and joined the international Ex Libris Society in He played a key role in forming the Flemington Library Association, donating both money and land upon which the present Flemington Free Public Library is built. Other interests included natural science, archaeology and many other civic, fraternal and religious organizations in which he was involved. He passed away on March 16, 1963 at the age of 93. In addition to his contributions to the Hunterdon County Historical Society, other collections can be found in the Special Collections at Rutgers University Archives, Jersey Historical Society, the Smithsonian Institute, The American Philosophical Society, and the NJ Museum of Agriculture. Scope and Content: The Hiram E. Collection of Photographic Images consists of: 32 daguerreotypes and 93 glass plate s. Most consist of images of the family, and also include images of other people and scenes of Hunterdon County.
