2 Edgewood Bible Church Biblical Counseling Instructor Outline Definition of Biblical Counseling 1. Where do we get the idea of Biblical counseling? Nou the o ( ). 2. Acts 20:31, (3560) - to a d m o n i s h, warn, exhort. a. Lexicon: nominative case, singular, masculine gender, present tense, active voice, participle. b. A d m o n i s h (NASB, ESV), warn (NIV, ISV, KJV), care over (NLT). c. Context, Paul speaking his departing words to the leaders of Ephesus, is reminding them of his example as a servant leader. The leaders of this church are going to face external and internal opposition to draw away the disciples. Again, Paul refers to his example of a d m o n i s h i n g them without ceasing for three years day and night, each one with tears. 3. Romans 15:14, (3560) to a d m o n i s h, warn, exhort. a. Lexicon: Present tense active voice infinitive. b. Competent to instruct (NIV, ESV, ISV), teach each other (NLT), a d m o n i s h (NASB, KJV) c. Context, Paul is writing to the Roman Gentile believers. Paul was encouraging the strong believers to bear with the failings of the weak. He tells them that all that was written in the past was written to teach, endure, encourage through the Scriptures, and have h o p e. He then transitions into e n c o u r a g i n g these believers, reminding them of what they know, and they should i n s t r u c t one another. Paul boldly wrote to them on some points, as if to remind you of them again, because of the grace of God to be a minister to them, so the Gentiles might become a sacrifice acceptable to God, sanctified by the Holy Spirit Corinthians 4:14, (3560) - to a d m o n i s h, warn, exhort. a. Lexicon: first person, singular, present tense, active voice, indicative mood. b. Warn (NIV, NLT, ISV, KJV), a d m o n i s h (ESV, NASB). c. Context, Paul is writing the believers in the church at Corinth, where there were divisions among the believers caused by pride, a consumptive life-style, and lust. Paul is e x p o s i n g the sin of the Corinth church but letting the believers of the Corinth church know that h e c a r e s for them as a father does his children. Paul e n c o u r a g e s them to imitate him. To that end he is sending Timothy to Page 1
3 Edgewood Bible Church Biblical Counseling remind them of how Paul lives and that he is t e a c h i n g each church to live like C h r i s t. Paul reminds those who are sinning in their a r r o g a n c e, that he speaks with real power, that of Christ, and they are just talk. 5. Colossians 1:28, (3560) - to a d m o n i s h, warn, exhort. a. Lexicon: nominative voice, plural, masculine gender, present tense, active voice, participle. b. A d m o n i s h (NIV, NASB, ISV), warning (NLT, ESV). c. Context: Paul was writing to the church at Colossae because Jewish zealots and Gentile deceivers were coming into the church and pressing them to follow ceremonial law or w o r l d l y philosophies. Paul was combating these errors by t e a c h i n g thanksgiving for the supremacy of Christ. Through this t e a c h i n g, Paul makes it clear the error and correcting error with teaching. But not just any teaching, the teaching of wisdom of p r o c l a i m i n g Christ. The purpose was that everyone may be made perfect in Christ. 6. Colossians 3:16, (3560) to a d m o n i s h, warn, exhort. a. Lexicon: nominative voice, plural, masculine gender, present tense, active voice, participle. b. A d m o n i s h (NIV, ESV, NASB, ISV, KJV), counsel (NLT). c. Context, Paul was writing to the church at Colossae because Jewish zealots and Gentile deceivers were coming into the church and pressing them to follow ceremonial law or w o r l d l y philosophies. Paul is now encouraging the church to set their hearts on the things a b o v e and not on the things o f e a r t h. Because their focus is on h o l i n e s s, their lives should be characterized by: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, p a t i e n c e, and f o r g i v e n e s s. In this spirit, Paul calls for them to let the W o r d o f C h r i s t dwell in them richly. Characteristics of this life are: t e a c h i n g and a d m o n i s h i n g one another, as you sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs of gratitude Thessalonians 5:14, (3560) - to a d m o n i s h, warn, exhort. a. Lexicon: Second person plural, present tense, active voice, imperative mood. b. Warn (NIV, NLT, KJV), admonish (ESV, NASB, ISV). c. Context, Paul is writing the church at Thessalonica, not because of sin but rather because of p e r s e c u t i o n. This church faces an unbelieving Jewish population, hostile toward them. In fact, Paul s visit to them was cut short by imprisonment and being Page 2
4 Edgewood Bible Church Biblical Counseling driven from town by threats of death. In his closing, Paul is asking the people of this church to honor those who work hard among you and are over you, their leadership. Further Paul is urging the leaders and the members of the church to w a r n i n g those of the church who are idle (the Greek word is used for soldiers irregular in conduct, disorderly, Strong 814) Thessalonians 3:15, (3560) - to a d m o n i s h, warn, exhort. a. Lexicon: Second person plural, present tense, active voice, imperative mood. b. Warn (NIV, NLT, ESV, ISV), admonish (NASB, KJV). c. Context, Paul is writing the church at Thessalonica a second time. Again, this is more because of the continued p e r s e c u t i o n and to e n c o u r a g e those about what was written in the first letter. In this passage, we see Paul still concerned about idleness within the church. Paul commands the members of this church not to associate with a person not adhering to the teachings and example of Christ. Paul s command in not associating with the person is not that they are an enemy but warning them as a brother. 9. Applications a. Understand there is a command to a d m o n i s h one another (nou the o): 1 i. The first part to a d m o n i s h i n g one another is tea c h i n g.
