1 S T. BRENDAN S EPISCOPAL CHURCH T HE NAVIGATOR NOVEMBER 2016 November 2016 Inside This Edition Message from Caroline 1 Grief, Loss Program 2 Holiday Bazaar 3 A Time for Blessing 4 Outreach Projects Prayer List and Celebrations Schedule and Special Events All Saints Day Decorations for Santa John Standerwick Greeter Training Thanksgiving Celebration Good news from Bishop Lattime Church Bazaar 12 Dear Friends in Christ: The Archbishop of Canterbury during World War II, William Temple, said The Church is the only society on earth that exists for the benefit of nonmembers. I am honored to serve a church whose ministries touch hundreds of persons who are not official members of our small church. The Galley, our ministry at Johnson Youth Center, our work at the Pioneer Home, and our support of prison ministry, AWARE and the Glory Hole are just a few of the extensions of St. Brendan s beyond our walls. On a larger level, St. Brendan s leads our Deanery in support of our Diocese, which allows the church to reach out to small indigenous communities, and provides the support of the Bishop and his staff to all congregations. Currently the Diocese is active in empowering lay leadership so that in those communities where there is no priest, Episcopal worship and pastoral care will be available to the members of those congregations. All of this occurs because of your commitment to supporting the work of the church. We do a great deal. There is much more we would like to do, locally and in the greater church. I am writing to prayerfully ask for your pledge to support St. Brendan s in If you already pledge, please consider increasing your pledge by a small amount, and more if you are able to do so. If you do not yet pledge to St. Brendan s, here are a few reasons to do so: Committing your whole self, including a portion of your financial gifts, enriches you spiritually and connects you at a deeper level to this faith community. Pledging enables your Finance Committee and Vestry to plan more accurately for St. Brendan s ministries in the coming year. The number of pledging units is one of the measures of a healthy congregation, and is a sign to us and the church at large of the spiritual wellbeing of our local community. Thank you for all the gifts of time, talent and treasure that you offer to St. Brendan s, to Juneau and to the greater church. Know that in doing so you serve Christ and proclaim the Kingdom of Heaven in our anxious and suffering world. The ingathering of pledge cards will be Sunday, November 6, Faithfully, The Rev. Caroline F. Malseed Priest-in-Charge

We will also have jewelry from Lovell Designs,. This is our 5 th year of having the jewelry, a nice gift for someone on your Christmas list. Although and texting has taken the place of a written letter, some of us still like to send a card. The Life is Short notecards designed by Stephanie Hall will be available for sale the proceeds from the cards benefit the Music Fund. A new item this year will be Anglican Prayer Beads designed and made by St. Brendan s members. Each one is unique and beautiful. The Johnson Youth Center is raising funds for activities not included in their budget. They ve made Hot Pepper Jelly and it will be available for sale at the Bazaar. We re in need of some helping hands for setup, starting after the Galley on Nov. 10 th, then Friday the 11 h from 9:00 AM- 8:00 PM. Please bring your donations during those hours. Our doors open Saturday at 8:30 AM. Please join us for Breakfast or Lunch, bring a friend, and do your shopping in between. There will be flyers available if you can post one at work or ask a local business to put it in their window that would be great! For those who use FACEBOOK, please consider posting a notice about the Bazaar for all your friends. If you have questions, please talk with Ingrid, Carla, or Penny.

4 Page 4 A TIME OF BLESSINGS A TIME OF CELEBRATION The hats and mittens will soon be off the tree and being worn by those who need them leaving the branches bare but not for long. It will become our tree for Thanksgiving Blessings. You will be able to write what you are thankful for on a leaf and hang it on the tree. I hope the branches of our tree will be full and reflect God s blessings to us. This is a season to be thankful. What are your blessings? Your family, home, God s love, health, church/church family, friends, job? We are all thankful for these things and much more. We are grateful for our blessings and we also celebrate them throughout the year in one form or another. Take St. Brendan s for example. We celebrate and honor St. Brendan s year round whenever we gather in fellowship, attend services, using it and letting others use it, participating, supporting it, and maintaining it. We give thanks for our church and the peaceful setting where we can pray and worship; for Adams Hall where we share wonderful fellowship at coffee hour, galley, potlucks, special dinners, do bazaars and fundraisers; for Boesser Hall where Sunday School and Godly Play meet, committees meet; community groups gather; and the kitchen where great food is served and is surrounded by laughter and stories. We gather every week with our church family and with our youth. We ask for prayers and we give thanks for prayers; we know that God blesses us and we ask that he continues to bless our church and our church family. Sometimes as we look around the church, visit at coffee hour, and even when we hold meetings, things are said or we see something and for a brief minute we step back in time and remember and hear voices from those who have gone before us. That too is a blessing. It can catch us off guard and without realizing it, we celebrate their memory with a smile or give a quiet little laugh and we realize they are still with us, looking down and giving us strength. Yes, we all celebrate year round at St. Brendan s and for the blessings we receive there and God has been good. Penny

8 Page 8 All Saints Day Christians who celebrate All Saints Day believe there is a prayerful spiritual connection between those in heaven and the living. The observance of remembering the dead can be found in ancient times. The Celts had a holiday called Samhain (celebrated in the Spring), similar to the Roman festival Lemuria (celebrated in the fall). It was Pope Gregory III ( ) who designated November 1 with a prayer for the relics of the holy apostles and of all saints, martyrs and confessors, of all the just made perfect who are at rest throughout the world. We will celebrate All Saints Day on November 6 remembering those known and unknown who have gone before us. The Liturgy will include the reading of names of those who have been members of St. Brendan s. Their faith, vision and dedication to this church should always be remembered. Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. Following the service, there will be a Parish Potluck in Adams Hall. Please bring a dish to share. HELP! Santa needs his helpers to turn out at 8am on November 5th to Decorate the small conference room for his visit during the Bazaar. Everything will be provided.

9 Page 9 John Standerwick We have recently learned that John Standerwick, a former member of St. Brendan s, passed away on April 16, John and his wife, Donna, were among the founding members of St. Brendan s Church, as was his mother, Ruth. He was a member of the first Building Committee that planned the church building. He also served on the Vestry, then called the Bishop s Committee. His work was a Director of the Tongass Forest Service. Donna, an artist, designed the round St. Brendan s stained glass window, which we use as the symbol of our church, and the stained glass at the upper portions of the three windows behind the altar. She also painted the watercolor of St. Brendan s. Both John and Donna were important influences in the beginning of St. Brendan s Church. Should you wish to send your condolences to Donna, her address is: Donna Standerwick 94 Marsden Rd. Port Angeles, Wa John was interred at St. Peter s-by-the-sea in Sitka, their church home prior to moving to Juneau. Dear Friends in Christ: One of the thoughts posted on the "sticky notes" exercise as part of our Mutual Ministry Review earlier this summer was an interest in improving our efforts at welcoming newcomers. Currently I am working on developing a Welcoming Committee (for lack of a better name) whose work will include all elements of greeting and welcoming our visitors, beginning with the work of the ushers but including follow up as well. I plan a brainstorming session in the near future, date to be announced, and a training session to follow. Welcoming is a responsibility we all share, not just the ushers, so I encourage all of you to participate in this upcoming program. Dates will be announced shortly. Faithfully, Caroline Thanksgiving Celebration Our interfaith celebration this year will be a little different! Rather than the traditional service, we will join with Shepherd of the Valley for an intergenerational event with "stations" with activities planned at each area--crafts, prayer, and other activities related to the theme of Thanksgiving. The event will take place Wednesday, Nov. 23 (Thanksgiving Eve) from 5:30 to 7 p.m. More information will follow--all are welcome!
