1 AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH FIFTH EPISCOPAL DISTRICT WOMEN S MISSIONARY SOCIETY & YOUNG PEOPLE AND CHILDREN S DIVISION Missions in Action 2013 Short Term Mission Trip June 19 23, 2013 Pause, Restart, and Praise Him Again Psalms 119:154
2 The Place - Joplin, Missouri Joplin is a city in southern Jasper County and northern Newton County in the southwestern corner of the US state of Missouri. Although often believed to have been named for the ragtime composer Scott Joplin, who lived in Sedalia, Missouri, the town is in fact named after the Reverend Harris Joplin, an early settler and the founder of the area's first Methodist congregation. The town was established in 1873 and expanded significantly from the wealth created by the mining of zinc; its growth faltered after World War II when the price of the mineral collapsed. The city gained travelers as Route 66 passed through it; "Joplin, Missouri" is among the lyrics to Bobby Troup's legendary song, immortalizing the city among others on the famous highway. There is a street Langston Hughes Broadway in Joplin named for him. Langston Hughes, an African-American poet and writer was born in Joplin, Missouri on February 1, On May 22, 2011, Joplin was struck by an extremely powerful EF-5 tornado, which resulted in at least 161 deaths and more than 900 injuries; there was also the total destruction of thousands of houses, and severe damage to numerous apartments and businesses, St. John's Medical Center, and multiple school buildings. - By Wikipedia The Church Handy Chapel A.M.E. Church When the tornado came in 2011, Rev. Willie Rogers opened the church for the community to use the basement for shelter and the people came. He had an old 15 inch screen TV in the basement for the people to watch and to keep up with the news and the weather. He said they never lost power doing the storm. Handy Chapel needs a little love and care. The Mission Joplin Community The Fifth Episcopal District will PAUSE from our personal agendas and lives at home to distribute food, clothing, and school supplies to the Joplin community, painting, flower/shrub planting, and apply sealant to wooden floors. We will RESTART the hope of the Joplin area by witnessing through words and deeds. Those attending will also be afforded the opportunity to restart our own personal relationship with God. Beginning our journey home we will PRAISE HIM AGAIN giving God the Glory for the great things he has done.
