SCHUSSEL The Polty Senate wll vote tonght on whether to establsh a bus lne from campus to Port Jefferson along Route 25A.and f the Senate approves, the bus could be n operaton by February 1, sad Polty Presdent Davd Herzog. Monday nght, the Polty Councl, whch s composed of the student government's offcers, and class representatves, passed a resoluton n support of the lne's establshment. The vote, whch passed sx to zero wth one member absent, came after several months of sporadc dscussons by the body. Herzog sad the resoluton was the result of the overwhelmng postve response to a Statesman questonnare askng whether students favored the bus. He sad about 5 people were for ths commuter and shopper bus servce and only two were aganst t. Herzog sad that he beleves the Senate wll gve ts consent, and that t mght allocate up to $6,93, currently the cost to»polty for a Smth Haven Mall bus. t s now uncertan how much the seven day a week servce would cost because Polty has yet to negotate for a contract. Herzog sad that Polty wll probably contract wth Long sland Lmousne Servce whch operates ts mall bus. To help pay for the servce, Herzog sad that merchants along the route have agreed to donate money and Polty wll charge between 25 to 5 cents per fare. However, Coram Bus Servce, nc. operates a bus from Port Jefferson to Stony Brook and charges only 35 cents. Ths bus, whch makes eght round trps a day, operates Monday through Saturday from 8:5 AM to 7:55 PM. t, however, does not correspond to student class schedules Contnued on page 3) >E^ PROPOSED PORT JEFF BUS ROUTE s represented by the damond lne. Pctures adorned the walls and today's menu s stll on the bulletn board n the cafetera of ths well kept depresson era schoolhouse. At 7:45 PM, over 1 people are stl n the room, and more are flterng n for ths everng's event. The place s Hallanan Junor Hgh School and the room s where the Repubfcan Presdental Precnct Caucus for the 68th precnct n Des Mones s about to begn. At 8 PM the meetng starts, as t does n most of the other 2,53 precncts throughout the state of owa. 'Me presdental selecton process for 198 has just begun. New Yorkers, lke mysedf, who are famlar wth the prmary system n our state probably fnd cau cu se s cofu ang. Frst of all, pols aren't open from early n the mornng untl late at nght, wth one votng at one's own converence. n fact, there are no polls. There s a town meetng or caucus, one Democratc and one Republcan n each of the 2,531 precncts throughout the state of owa. For those of you who have braved the second floor of the Stony Brook Unon on a Wednesday nght, can descrbe the caucus as salar to a Poty Senate meetng. n a caucus anythng can happen. Anyone who wants to has a chance to stand up and speak on any topc. Majorty rles, bckerng and argung are normal. There are three man tems to be taken care of at a Republcan caucus; a presdental preference straw pole, the choosng of delegates, and the dscussdon of platform resolutons. n ths caucus, drected by WendeN Harmes, the precnct charman, the ground nrles were establshed frst Every caucus has the rght to establsh ts own nrles. Ths one decded to use the straw podl to detemne the cfvson of the seven delegates that t s enttled to. n other precncts, the caucus can have a wnnertakeall system f t chooses. The number of delegates from a precnct s proportonal to the number of people who voted n the prevous electon. Charman Harmes sad he was m surprsed" by the large turnout, addng that '25 percent of the Republcans n the precnct are probably present." As a result, there was standng room only. The precnct charman of the last preadental caucus, who declned to be dentfed, was amazed at the turnout. She descrbed the caucus four years ago as one that less than twenty people attended" and everyone knew each other. She, as most others, credted the large turnout to the meda coverage. Weather was another factor that helped the turnout, t was 3 degrees and dear at the start of the caucus. Last year at ths tme, Des Mones was dggng out from a foot of snow wth the temperature at nnus 2 degrees and wnd chlds at mnus 7. The mld January weather, unusual n owa, helped people attend the caucus. At 8:3 PM the ballot s were dstrbuted to those present, and 134 people voted. The results were tabulated n approxmately 2 mnutes. Durng that tme, communty members got up to stump for canddates they supported for the U.S. Senate and other offces. The mood became heated as some caucus members questoned the speakers on the canddates they supported and arguments developed. The rules adopted before the straw pol gave a delegate for every 14 percent of the caucus vote. The results showed Bush wth 48.5%, at least three delegates; Reagan wth 19%, probably one delegate; Baker wth 13.4%, obvously gettng one delegate, and Anderson wth 8.2%, probably gettng one delegate. The other canddates scattered the remanng votes amongst themselves. Onedelegatewasletover, but Bush forces, the strongest present, dd not have the majorty to dam the fnal delegate. At the tme, the evenng's major arguments occurred, uang 45 mnutes and four votes. Ths occurred when a Reagan supporter motoned to strp Anderson of hs delegate and to gve one each of the two remanng delegates to Reagan and Bush. Ths was aganst the ground rules set at the bennng of the caucus, but n a caucus majorty rules and anythng goes. The Reagan and Bush people joned forces to ralroad ths moton through. Despte the complants of the others present, the moton went through and was accepted by the char. One Anderson supporter clamed that ths was not far snce the rules were not followed. ne person should have realzed that ths was not an exercse of farness, t wax poltcs. The 68th prednct Republcan caucus sent four delegates for George Bush. two for Ronald Reagan and one for Howard Baker to the county conventon for Polk Comty. At the county conventon, delegates wll be chosen to the state conventon. The state conventon wll fnally choose the 37 delegates that owa sends to the Republcan Natonal Conventon n Detrot July 14. We further urge Polty to adopt the proposal voced by Sophomore Representatve Mke Kornfeld callng for a free student bus servce to the Port Jeff area. Naturally, the cost for runnng ths servce should be pcked up by Polty. There are several compellng reasons why a Port Jefferson bus run wll be advantageous to Stony Brook students. Presently, wth just a bus runnng to Smth Haven Mall a certan select group of merchants have a monopoly on the commercal needs of resdent students. Wth a bus run to Port Jefferson, students who would otherwse have to go to the Mall wll now be afforded another avenue to fulfll ther shoppng needs. Thus we hope that tonght, when the Senate meets, they wll vote to mplement the bus run as soon as possble. Money Speeds t seems that Securty s gettng very effcent as of late. Proof of ths s the quck rate at whch they have been towng away cars parked on campus. All one has to do, these days, s stand out on the curb and watch the brown securty cars whz by, at speeds of up to 5 MPH, n pursut of another errantly parked car. Even more amazng s the speed at whch they tow the cars once they get to them. t s a wonder that no one has been struck down whle crossng the streets. Too bad Securty doesn't respond to major emergences wth such quckness. Remember, the qucker they go, the more cars they tow. Makng hs flm debut as both star and coauthor, Steve Martn tntllates the audence wth hs wacky brand of humor. Aded by drector Carl Rener, Martn performs the knd of physcal comedy that s a drect throwback to the old Jerry Lews moves of the 5's and the 6's. As one vews the flm, the deft touch of Rener s easly evdent. And ndeed ths group s very versatle. They move from tunes lke "Donna" an early 6s soundng ballad to "Slly Love" an almost New Wave soundng tune, all the whle dsplayng the group's good natured humor as welt as ther ablty to play dfferent types of tunes Pearl Harbor and the Explosons (Wamer Bros.) Pearl Harbor and the Explosons Pearl Harbor and the Explosons s bascally lght punk rock. There are some ntrgung muscal hghlghts contaned n ths album, but there are also many nexcusable flaws. The bggest problem revolves around the vocals whch are weak and bured n the producton. "So Much for Love" features an outoftune lead vocal that grates aganst the nerves. There are no memorable melodes here, and there s no emotonal delvery to save the lack of melody. The fnal result s boredom. Perhaps the lyrcs could have saved many of these tunes, but alas, they too are borng and mmature. A prme example would be the repettous phrases n "Shut up and Dance." The song evokes memores of the Monkees, only ths rendton s done n heavy metal. On the brghter sde. Pearl Harbor and the Explosons have an excellent muscal backbone. Adventures n Utopa (Warner Bros.) Utopa Although much can be sad n favor of Todd Rundgren, hs musc ncessantly lacks substance and feelng. Rundgren, although qute a capable muscan, songwrter and producton genus, manfests n hs work a pretentous character. Utopa, the band Rundgren has been playng wth for several years s competent wthout drawng any specal attenton to t. Roger Powell, Kasm Sulton and John Wlcox are the members of Utopa. t seems Rundgren has gven Utopa an ncreased credt n the makng of hs latest creaton. Adventures n Utopa. All musc s wrtten exclusvely by Utopa, although t s obvous that Rundgren's nfluence was domnant. Adventures n Utopa, s a soundtrack for a Utopa vdeotape. t»s musc only dehard Rundgren fans wll appreacate; nspd lyrcs, unfocused melodes mxed wth tght, electronc nstrumentals. t s also apparent that Rundgren has been somewhat persuaded by the New Wave scene as hs mus c on Adventures n Utopa, reflects ths. Adventures n Utopa, s a bengn album whch does lttle harm and nspres even less. Hancock n 1978, Chck Corea and Herbe Hancock, two of the fnest jazz pansts today, embarked on a seres of concerts that greatly mpressed the musc world. Both muscans, however formdable, were reared n the hgh technology age of electronc musc. Perhaps, that s why ths album s so refreshng; only a set of Stenways separate the audence from the musc. The playng s exqustely clean and superb; modern jazz at ts best. t s apparent, that the pano wzardry of Corea slghtly outweghs Hancock's more dgnfed approach, t would be false, however, to label the concerts as a competton between the two men. The catchphrase duel, states Tony Cohan n the lner, "No term could more dstort the qualty of the experence created by these two remarkable artsts..." There are some brllant hghlghts found on ths album. Corea's "Homecomng" s strkngly beautful, whle "The Hook," by both Corea and Hancock ncorporates the subtle style changes n playng by these two promnent muscans. Albums such as these are prceless. An attempt to cash n on the concerts and quckly release a recordng was not made. Through a slow and careful producton process, Corea and Hancock s an album of superor sound qualty. The fne pano work by these two emnent artsts has not been dstorted. Rchard Wald. Page 4ASTATESMAN/AlternatvesJanuary 23, 198 January 23,198 STATESMAN/AlternatvesPage 5A

16 S l By DAVD L. BERENBAUM Polty has been accused of beng nefent, neffectual, unproductve, unmagtve, mperceptve, eltst, borng, and kng n strong and effectve leadershp. rhese nsults and crtcsms have been rled at the organzaton wthout restrant oughout Polty's hstory. At tmes these ms have been applcable; no government ble to completely avod dsplayng such 1ts. But n makng such accusatons, Pol 's postve actons and attempts have en completely gnored. Both the Polty mncl and Senate act only wth the stunts nterest and welfare n mnd. Ths bemes overwhelmngly obvous f one looks the facts and transcends mere heresay d bas. Each year Polty dstrbutes nearly 5, n undergraduate student actvty es to campus clubs, servces, and organ tons. Polty has strongly condemned plng on campus. Unfortunately, t s bemng ncreasngly more clear that trplng no longer the excepton n resdence lfe flcy, but has become another Stony ook nsttuton. Polty fought the nscmnate movement of resdents from er chosen dormtory n the now nmous "Boat People" ncdent. Polty s now nvestgatng allegatons ncernng Resdence Hall Drectors rough a poll and questonnare that was strbuted last semester. Upon the comleton of the survey Polty wll take aproprate acton to elmnate the dscovered roblems. Polty aded n the battle to reopen stuent establshments such as the Benedct aloon, Baby Joey's, and the Kelly Quad offee Houses. Today Senate Commttees e consderng ways to mprove both comuter and resdence lfe alke. deas nclude ovng the Commuter College to the Stuent Unon and openng a Snack Bar n Ruth PLot. Commttees have been ormed to remedy the on campus problems f vandalsm and the neffcences of Pubc Safety. A Student ARC Commttee was ormed to watch how our tuton money s eng both spent and dstrbuted at both lbany and wthn Stony Brook tself. How 1any people actually approve of the new lacktop surface that s already begnnng o crumble at a hgh cost to both taxpayers nd students alke? Revson of the Senate ByLaws concernng budgetng and the functonng of many ^ r VEWPONTS CUnted WellStand Dvded We'llFall By JEFFREY SUSSMAN Many of us may feel: We are young adults and for the most part at the mercy of the system that our parents and grandparent's generatons control. Perhaps today s the day that we can decde to do somethng about t. Let's make our presence felt. We can start by gettng of ts commttees demonstrates the Senate's desre to make student government more responsve. X, wthn my own buldng, am prntng a Senate Newsletter to keep my consttuents nformed about Polty, whle other Senator's are holdng "Meet the Senator" sessons to keep ther respectve consttuents nformed on ssues that shall effect them n the future. n addton, of course, Senators are oblged to attend ther College Leg meetngs and partcpate n them. Ths semester the Senate Commttee on the Handcapped shall begn holdng ts meetngs to work out the problems that are often shared by both the non handcapped and handcapped alke on campus. These problems nclude nadequate lghtng, ramps and ralngs, and an overabundance of mud paths on campus, to menton but a few. The Polty Undergraduate Student Assocaton s alve, well, and actve, despte all the belef to the contrary. Polty to an extent s a bureaucracy, but the people who operate the machnery are honestly concerned about the students they represent. urge both students and elected Polty offcals to make Polty work for the undergraduates. Unted we wll stand and dvded we wll fall to the pressure of Admnstraton. Polty s here to serve you, whether through ts clubs, commttees, Hotlne, or drected attempts to persuade admnstraton polcy. The creaton of the Hotlne Walkng Servce and Polty's attempt to mprove the devestatngly poor state of campus lghtng are both examples of Polty's attempt to serve ts consttuents. There s stll a great deal that Polty must do to gan the support and confdence of the students. Constructve changes n admnstratve polcy must contnue to be made. Campus socal and envronmental condtons must be mproved upon. Both the Senate and the Student Councl of Polty have reached the pont where procedural techncaltes do not domnate ts actvtes. A great deal has been accomplshed by Polty n ts hstory, but much more can be accomplshed n ts future f those who crtcze try to be more constructve than destructve. (The wrter s an undergraduate Poltcal Scence major who s both Polty Senator of Kelly A and charman of the Polty Commttee on the Handcapped.) Let's Make Our Presence Felt respect from the older generaton. We should be treated as adults. f we want to get rd of Lackman, they should lt us. f we want to have the Unon open 24 hours a day, they should let us. f we want to pant our tny and overprced rooms any color we want to, then they should do more than condone t. f we want classes to be later n order to help out commuters, they should let us. Perhaps students want to start a supermarket or even a harm so that people wll start stoppng the practce of makng a proft on our needs... there's much to do, let's start. Well choose our academc, socal and nsttutonal lfestyles..j D CONCRETE ABSTRACTONS Lfe After Death By Nel H. Butterklee Ths past New Year's Eve, whle the rest of us were partyng the nght away, a strange and exctng story began to unfold. t seems that at the Cleveland Medcal Center, a crack team of doctors managed to brng back to lfe a man presumed to have been dead. But what was so unusual was that he had been presumed dead for two weeks. For the frst tme n medcal hstory, doctors brought back to lfe a man who not only was declared legally dead but was gven a proper bural too. On December 19th, Oscar Drydock drove hs car off the road and nto a brck wall. He was pronounced dead on arrval at the hosptal. Yet, for some unanswered reason two weeks later doctors, from the Cleveland Medcal Center, obtanea a court order to exhume the body. Followng that they mmedately gave Mr. Drydock an emergency enema to (n hs doctor's own words) "get hm up and runnng agan.' That has got to be the strongest enema ever admnstered. But the story doesn't end here. Mr. Drydock, sensng hs new found fame has decded to cash n on t wth a seres of wellpad ntervews and a soontobe publshed book. was lucky enough to be there for hs frst ntervew. Queston: What was the frst thng that came to mnd when you realzed that you were dead? Answer: 'll have you know that was really pleased to be out of Cleveland. Q: Leavng Cleveland was the frst thng you thought of? A: Well had spent my whole lfe there and was begnnng to thnk that wouldn't get to go anywhere's else. Q: Well you dd. Now how dd t feel to de? A: tell you t was qute annoyng. Fred owed me $52 from the frst Pttsburgh/Houston game, and was gong to pck t up the nght was klled. never dd get my money. Q: No, guess not. But gettng back to the sensaton of death. A: Oh well, you see, t was lke nothng had ever experenced before. t was lke havng your teeth pulled whle beng stoned. Q: s there an afterlfe? A: Oh boy, s there ever an afterlfe. Though tell you all ths attenton now sn't bad ether. Frst of all there s all the sex and booze that a person could want. Then comes the good part. When you're dead you can do anythng you want nonstop. There s no element of tme; you just sort of free float. n fact when you're dead everythng s free. Everythng, that s except oranges. Q: Oranges? A: That's rght oranges. Q: Dd that bother you? A: Boy dd t ever. Dd you ever try havng sex for 144 hours, nonstop? Q: No. A: Well beleve me, after the frst 1 hours, you get pretty tred. To keep gong you have to take vtamns and the only known vtamn supplement s... Q: know, oranges. Dd you mnd payng for t? A: And be able to have sex for another 1 hours? Are you kddng? Q: Was ths experence of nonstop sex, alcohol and oranges ever trng to you? A: To be honest about t, after about a week and a half was begnnng to get bored. mean the same thng day after day. Q: What do you recommend we do to prepare ourselves for an afterlfe? A: Brng along a change of underwear, thngs get pretty stcky otherwse. Q: Fnally, what s the frst thng that you plan to do now that you're home? A: Go to bed wth my wfe. (The wrter s a regular Statesman columnst.) January 23, 198 STATESMAN Page 9

Keth, Tllery, and Wrght would go down n the record books as Stony Brook's alltme leadng scorers and the two years that was able to broadcast Patrot basketball n the 7s wll go down n my memory as the greatest years any wdeeyed enthusastc college student could ever ask for. 23 Patrot nd oor Tracksters Off And Runnng Agan M Statesman By LSA NAPELL t was a rough day for everyone. On the way to the developmental track meet at Farmngdale College January 21, the van, borrowed by the Stony Brook Track Team from the Unversty, began to gve them trouble. One of the wheels was loose and t was deemed too dangerous to travel any further. So, the squad was forced to travel the second leg of ther journey by tax. When they reached ther destnaton, they warmed up to compete n the frst meet of the 198s. "We were all very rusty,"' sad Paul Cabot, the team's captan who runs the mle and anchor poston n the mle relay. "A developmental meet s just lke a practce except they gve out rbbons at ths meet. t's the frst tme ddn't get a rbbon1 got blsters nstead." The Patrots dd brng home one rbbon Monday evenng. Andy Nelkn jumped over sx feet n the hgh jump competton to take second place. "Ths was a bad floor; you need a floor that gves somethng back" sad Nelkn. "' had a good sprng, but ths s far from my personal best." Rcky Kng, the sprnter who was njured n the fnal meet of last semester, was back and runnng Monday evenng. He's recovered enough to run the 6yard dash but he needs tme to get back nto shape. "'m feelng pretty good, but f push t or stretch t too hard, my leg stll hurts," sad Kng. "A Togh KW` Pete Lord came n fourth place n the 6yard run, just mssng the thrd place rbbon. "Lord's a tough kd," sad Cabot. "He can run hard." Lord also ran the 6 yard hurdles and partcpated n the mle relay. There were representatves from Suffolk Communty, Sant John's, C.W. Post and Farmngdale at Monday's meet. There were no runners representng Pratt, though, the school whch s hostng the Collegate Track Conference n whch the Pats wll run Thursday. Maravch Wraps Up Deal Wth Celtcs Club Boston (AP) Pete Maravch. a superstar released recently by the tah Jazz durng hs 1th season n the Natonal Basketball Assocaton, sgned as a free agent Tuesday nght wth the Boston Celtcs. Hs sgnng was anntounced at a FWws conlference after Maravch watched Boston whp Houston whle sttng wth Celtcs general manager Red Aterbach. The two, accoompaned by attorneys, met for about 75 mnutes behnd closed doors pror to the game. Maravch, 31, tsad te planned to go mmedately on the njured lst untl he recovered from a "slghtly pulled gron muscle." He sad he wotld confer wth coach Bll Ftch about hs role wth the team. Ftch sad he was "mljttalented"" and suggested jokngly that he may never have Maravch shoot but smply have hm pass. " would rather have hm here than deftnd aganst hm at Phladelpha," (Contnued on page} 15) The Bottom Lne A Patrot Decade To Remember Earl Keth ('7579): Stony Brook's Frst AllAmercan Basketball Player By RAY STALLONE Contrary to popular belef, Stony Brook basketball was not born a couple of years ago wth the Patrots' rse to natonal promnence. Stony Brook basketball has been around qute a whle and the Patrots' rch tradton s drawn almost entrely from the past decade. There were some dark moments for Stony Brook n the 197s, but the brllance created by four Knckerbocker Conference Champonshps, four NCAA East Regonal Playoff bds and four consecutve NCAA team feld goal shootng percentage ttles easly overshadowed the nfrequent gloomy moments. The decade began wth Rolle Massmno as the Patrots' head basketball coach and, wth the team sparked by the late Mke Kerr and Bll Myrck, Stony Brook fnshed the regular season wth an 184 record and the Unversty's frst Knckerbocker Conference Champonshp. n addton, Stony Brook accepted a bd to compete n the 197 NCAA East Regonal Playoffs at Buffalo State. Wth an average heght of only 6'", the scrappy Pats went down to defeat twce and fnshed fourth n ther frst postseason tournament. Massmno's second year at the helm was and evdently, the 151 record the squad produced was good enough to land the ambtous Massmno the coveted head coachng poston at Dvson Vllanova Unversty. The followng campagn saw Don Covelesk take over the head coachng dutes and durng hs threeyear tenure, the Patrots took an upanddown rde on a rollercoaster. Unyeldng Dscplnary Code Despte the presence of 6'9" Dave Sten and Captan Paul Munck, who later moved on to become Madson Square Garden's Drector of Amateur Athletcs, a cumulatve record of 3831 precptated, covelesk's release marked the arrval of a new head basketball coach for the Patrots, who would be at the center of controversy and success over the next four unforgettable years. There are some who beleve that Ron Bash altered the destny of Stony Brook basketball forever. And yet, there are stll some who beleve that Bash's unyeldng dscplnary code and machnelke manner rreversbly damaged the careers of a handful of promsng athletes. Nevertheless, t's hard to argue wth success, and after "The Great Boycott and Suspenson Year" of '74'75, Bash led the Pats to a 1511 record n '75'76, and unveled a contngent of freshmen players so talented, that by the tme of ther graduaton, every sngle ndvdual and team record would be thers. From Long sland Cty Hgh School, Bash recruted Larry Tllery and Wayne Wrght to jon Earl Keth n formng the powerful Long sland Cty Connecton. Forwards Jon Adderley and Dwght Johnson came from the Bronx and added much needed bulk and depth. Together ths unt would ntate the begnnng of a new era for Stony Brook basketball n A 216 record secured a berth n the 1977 NCAA East Regonal Playoffs and produced the Patrots' second Knck Conference ttle. After losng 7165 to Oneonta n the openng round of the East Regonal tournament, Stony Brook grabbed thrdplace honors wth a 7463 vctory over thaca and headed home from Albany wth the confdent realzaton that the '77'78 campagn would be a whole lot better. The Long sland Cty Connecton members were junors by now and supplemented by Mel Walker and sold reserves lke Tom Durant and Joe Grandolfo, the Patrots won ther frst 18 games of the season en route to a spectacular 274 mark. Another Knck Conference ttle was captured and hostng the 1978 NCAA East Regonal Playoffs enabled Stony Brook to wn the tourney and advance to the regonal quarterfnals aganst Brandes Unversty. n what s generally consdered the fnest (Contnued on page 15)
