1 The Weekly Newsletter of the Only Normal Rotary Club in the World Chartered June 17, 1949 The Normal Spoke SERVICE ABOVE SELF RI No District No May 3, 2017 Volume No. 67 Issue No. 42 Link to Rotary International Normal Rotary web site: Link to District 6490 Website: (The District Newsletter can be found on the left side of the main page) Wednesday, May 10, 2017 Special Event - Student Scholarship Luncheon Wednesday, May 17, 2017 Greeters: Linda Healy & Gene Jontry Lottery: Bayo Adanri & Todd Anderson Program: Club Business and Birthday Auction Reporter: Bruce Bergethon Photographer: John E. Bishop Editor: Becky Goeckner Normal Rotary Club President Jim Rosenlund called the May 3, 2017 meeting to order and assigned Ron Timmerman to lead the singing, which was eventually on key. Gordon Ropp presented the invocation. President Jim asked us to share a moment of silence for Eureka Rotary President Mark Scott, who passed away yesterday. Dick Wagner noted that Scott was a real cog in the Eureka Club. Guests: Venise Keys, guest of Thomas Garrett. Venise is a professor of art appreciation at ICC, an artist and youth activist, and a proud Redbird alum. Thomas Garrett & Venise Keys Announcements: Oktoberfest is still coming up. Sherry Hawkins talked about sponsorship opportunities. President Jim read a thank-you letter from Heartland Community College (addressed, he noted, to President Andy Copenhaver ) for the $1000 the Club has contributed to a student scholarship. He also reminded us of the Memorial Day parade, and cautioned against wearing Rosenlund plaid shorts in lieu of the khakis that should accompany the Club blue t-shirt. Sherry Hawkins
2 Ron Timmerman Andy Copenhaver Art Drake Ron Timmerman explained that our pancake, scrambled eggs and bacon lunch was a prelude to/reminder of our Flapjack Fundraiser at Applebee s, from 8-10 a.m. Saturday, May 20. Every club member is asked to sell four tickets at $5 each; Matt Wyss has more if you need them. Ron reminded us that $4 of each $5 ticket goes to the Normal Rotary Foundation. There are numerous opportunities to serve (literally) at the Fundraiser; Ron circulated a signup. Andy Copenhaver previewed the Student Scholarship Awards luncheon next Wednesday, May 10, and got in a few editorial comments about the current administration. Pennies for Polio will be held from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 13. Normal Rotary members will take up their posts at the two McDonald s: at Main and Hovey and on Empire. A sign-up sheet made the rounds. Normal Rotary Club members will hold an ice cream social from 5:15-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 16 for residents of the McLean County Nursing Home. There s a sign-up sheet for that too. Art Drake referred to his successful but personally humiliating plea last week for help writing and photographing for the Spoke. He referred to June as the next opportunity for members to search their conscience anew. He then went on to report on the very active year for the ISU Interact club, whose last meeting of the year he had attended. Ray Ropp announced the date (June 21) for this year s Rural/Urban Night. Jim Rosenlund, Ann Ensenberger & Alan Chapman Alan Chapman inducted new NRC member Ann Ensenberger, sales manager of the soon-to-open Radisson Hotel. Ann has already contributed to several community organizations. Alan extolled the opportunities we can all make by contributing to the Rotary International Foundation and the Normal Rotary Foundation. Welcome Ann! Bayo Adanri, chair of the Hall of Honor Committee, announced two of the three new inductees: John A. Bishop, and Rob Glover. Dick Wagner spoke about John s contributions, and Bruce Bergethon about Rob s.
3 Bayo Adanri John A. Bishop & Dick Wagner Bruce Bergethon Rob Glover Lottery: Ron Timmerman won the weekly lottery pot, but he only drew the Jack of Spades, thus rolling the big pot to over $350. Ron generously contributed his winnings to Coats for Kids. Mystery Host: John A. Bishop presented the coveted $2 to Andy Copenhaver, citing the great amount of abuse he endures from the current administration, and noting that Andy joined the Club partly in conjunction with a sales call he made on John. Ron Timmerman Andy Copenhaver Bruce Bergethon Judge: Bruce Bergethon led the second iteration of Rotary Member Trivia, reminding those who had not answered the questionnaire to do so at the Club website using the link below: Click on Member survey located just beneath the paragraph on Membership. Larissa McIlvain, Alan Chapman & Linda Healy We found out that Linda Healy has tried rockclimbing, rollerblading, white water rafting, and bobsledding at Lake Placid; that Larissa McIlvain participated in competitive tumbling and trampoline for ten years; and that Alan Chapman s favorite singer is Neil Diamond. Hank Campbell and Surinder Sethi paid happy fines. Hank Campbell Surinder Sethi
4 Birthday Auction: Gordy Ropp appointed new member Ann Ensenberger as a new wingperson. Perhaps confused about her role, Ann won a bottle of Merlot, while Rob Cranston acquired LED stick-ons, and Becky Goeckner a new dog leash. Guest artist Venise Keys put three of her original watercolors up for auction (thank you!), and they went home with Alan Chapman, Art Drake and Hank Campbell. Jim Rosenlund & Venise Keys Thought for the Day is from Matsuo Basho: Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of men of old; seek what they sought. The Normal Spoke is a publication of the Normal Rotary Club of Illinois - P.O.
