1 ST. JOHN EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH PEKIN, ILLINOIS VOLUME 42, ISSUE 2 S T. JOH N S JOU R N AL FEBRUARY 2016 F om he Pa o... JESUS IS OUR INNOCENCE What if Jesus were to stand trial for alleged violations of God's Ten Commandments? If the whole truth about Him were known, and the judge and jury were fair, He would unquestionably be found innocent! For Jesus is holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and without sin, as God tells us in Hebrews 7:26 and 4:15. The centurion at Jesus' cross was absolutely right when he exclaimed, This Man really was innocent! Luke 23:47 Now, what if we were to stand trial for alleged violations of God's Ten Commandments? If the whole truth about us were known, and the judge and jury were fair, what would the verdict be? We would surely be found guilty of all charges! Consider: We have not feared, loved, and trusted God above all things as we ought, but have repeatedly disobeyed Him and done as we pleased, as though we were our own gods. We have not called upon God's holy name in prayer and thanksgiving as we ought, but have spoken His name carelessly, falsely, and even in cursing. We have not held God's word sacred and gladly heard and learned it as we ought, but have often been working or playing when we should have been resting in His house so that God could do His work in us through His word. We have not honored our parents and other authorities as we ought, but have often been disobedient and disrespectful to parents, teachers, governing officials, and others whom God has placed over us. We have not helped and supported other people in their physical needs as we ought, but have selfishly Our Monthly Newsletter (309) stjohnsec@grics.net neglected others, and have even harmed them by hateful words and actions. We have not lived sexually pure and decent lives, and loved and honored our spouses as our Lord requires, but have been impure in thoughts and even deeds, and have been rude, inconsiderate, and uncaring toward our husbands and wives. We have not helped and served others with their possessions and income as often and generously as we should, but have often been selfish and dishonest, eager to take advantage of others for our own advancement. We have not protected people's reputations as we ought, but have repeatedly slandered others, listened to gossip about others, and assumed something bad about others when we should have assumed the best. We have not been thankful and content with what God has given us, but have coveted people's property, possessions, spouses, and workers. Truly, if we had to build a defense that rested on our own thoughts and words and actions, there could be only one just verdict: Guilty on all counts! But what if Jesus were to stand trial for us in our place on our behalf? What then? Thankfully, this is not a hypothetical question, but asks about what He has in fact already done for us! For Jesus did stand trial for us. He took the accusations for our sins, was judged guilty of them, and was punished for them. The Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:6 God found His own Son guilty, so that He could find us innocent! God made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21 All this is simply to say: Jesus is our innocence! We stand before God right now, and we will stand before Him on Judgment Day, and He finds us not guilty, but innocent on account of Jesus! Continued on page 6

5 President Barnes asked each board to review the Table of Duties in the Church Constitution for their respective board, identify any issues or recommended changes, and return to him by April 1. Any changes would need to be proposed to the Church District. The meeting adjourned and closed with the Lord s Prayer. Respectfully submitted, Cheryl Ivey Secretary ############################# continued from the cover page We will be reading the account of Jesus' suffering and death from the Gospel according to Luke in our Lenten Vespers services this year. Because Luke's Gospel so emphasizes Jesus' innocence, our sermon series will be Jesus, Our Innocent Savior. We earnestly invite and urge all St. John's members (and your guests!) to come and listen to the Passion reading and to the preaching of Christ's innocent suffering and death for our salvation, that we may trust all the more firmly in His innocence, and thank and praise Him with sincere hearts. - Pastor Bishop Received a thank you letter from the Lutheran Heritage Foundation for our contribution to them. Rev. Heise says Thank you! Good bless in 2016! LENTEN VESPERS February 10 is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. We have again planned Wednesday evening Vespers services for the six weeks of Lent. 7 Bringing Christ to people around the world More than 120 years ago, the Missouri Synod sent its first missionaries to India, and our church has been active in international witness ever since. Though our witness and message are the same, much has certainly changed since then, and the 21st century brings even more new opportunities and challenges as we continue our international witness by the power of the Holy Spirit: You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth (Acts 1:8). As the LCMS focuses on international witness, we thank God for our partnerships with brothers and sisters around the world in carrying Christ s rich gifts to the ends of the earth! Join us in lifting up international witness this month. To help you do so, we have put together information and worship resources, including bulletin inserts, prayers, Scripture references and more for your use. lcms.org/focus/international-witness >> 8
