MASONIC CHARITY FOUNDATION 2016 ANNUAL REPORT OF NEW JERSEY

What we do for ourselves dies with us. What we do for others and the world remains and is immortal. ~ Brother Albert Pike MASONIC CHARITY FOUNDATION OF NEW JERSEY

Brethren and Friends: Within these pages, you will find many facts and figures about your Masonic Charity Foundation of New Jersey. Without a doubt, these statistics are noteworthy for the programs and achievements they represent. We hope you will find this information helpful in understanding the scope and magnitude of your Foundation s activities. These pages, however, do not fully convey the essence of the Foundation s mission. Simply put, Masons in New Jersey have accepted the challenge of caring for people in a tangible way. For 118 years, the Foundation has been the working tools by which that mission has been fulfilled. This report may seem devoted to facts and numbers, but it really demonstrates how your unselfish support and fraternal concern translates digits into blessings. Thank you for your active interest in the Foundation s mission, and for the strength of your dedication to the principles of Freemasonry. Thank you for being instrumental to the good works of your Masonic Charity Foundation of New Jersey. MASONIC CHARITY FOUNDATION OF NEW JERSEY Sincerely and fraternally, Walter R. Kaulfers Grand Master and Chairman Masonic Charity Foundation of NJ Edward R. Petkevis, P.G.C. President, Board of Trustees Masonic Charity Foundation of NJ 3

MASONIC CHARITY FOUNDATION FINANCIAL SUMMARY Condensed Statements of Unrestricted Activities for the years ended Dec. 31, 2015 and 2016 (dollars in thousands) Operating revenues $33,068 $32,062 Operating expenses 42,169 42,255 Loss incurred in the fulfillment of our charitable mission This loss has been historically covered by the following support from the members and friends of the fraternity: (9,101) (10,193) Unrestricted Estates, Gifts and Bequests 3, Realized gains earned on accumulated past support from the members and friends of the Fraternity 1, Net loss incurred in the fulfillment of our charitable mission $(4,097) $(9,001) Source: Audited financial statements for Dec. 31, 2015 and 2016, dated April 28, Committed to serving New Jersey Masons, their families and friends in the local community, Masonic Charity Foundation s board responded in 2016 to the realities of outside pressures, such as declining nursing occupancy nationally, decreasing reimbursements, increasing operating costs and changing consumer preferences, by evaluating and approving plans for repositioning services. In preparation for renovations to accommodate additional memory support services and about 80 additional retirement living rental apartments in response to customers interests, approximately 70 nursing beds were taken out of operation, resulting in decreased revenues by about $1 million compared to Plans are underway for 66 new entrance fee-based cottages on the campus. The new cottages and additional memory support services and new apartments are expected to open in Total operating expenses were generally flat from 2015 to 2016 due to planned reductions in staff and other costs related to fewer nursing beds. Charitable support of our mission is summarized in the chart below. Our investment income, dividends and realized gains also contributed a lesser amount to operations in 2016 about $275,000 compared to $1.7 million in However, the portfolio experienced more than $3.6 million of unrealized gains in 2016 compared to an approximate unrealized $1 million loss in Our capital reinvestment of $1.75 million in 2016, along with purposeful strategic growth and focus on financial stability, will renew our community and help to ensure the long-term financial success and the relevancy of services provided. We are blessed with generous supporters from the Fraternity and those we serve. As this chart shows, more than $5 million was recognized as support for our mission in 2015, growing to more than $6 million in Our Development Team gratefully recognizes support, regardless of its form (bequest, estate, charitable contribution, etc.) at the time it is received. 7 Friends, This past year has certainly brought a number of changes to our Foundation and community. The most noticeable is our new name, the Masonic Village at Burlington, and our new logo. With this new look, came other changes. In March 2016, we held a ribbon cutting for a new model duplex retirement living cottage, and in June 2017, we expect to break ground on the first of 66 cottages. MASONIC VILLAGE AT BURLINGTON Considering the increasing costs of providing health care services, combined with ever-decreasing government reimbursement for the care Masonic Village and Acacia Hospice provides, the Board of Directors constantly seek to accommodate market demands and provide the right mix of services for the campus financial balance. To address these concerns, please refer to the changes to our services and living options outlined on page 4. These decisions are made with our residents best interests in mind. We also value our Masonic heritage and look to the future needs of those we will serve. None of this would be possible without one key component: YOU. Your support of our mission drives us to provide the best care possible in the best environment with the best team members. We are honored to recognize the names of those individuals who have provided financial support to the Masonic Charity Foundation over the past year. On behalf of the Foundation, its residents, team members and Trustees, I humbly thank you for your support. With fraternal regards, Len Weiser Executive Director Masonic Charity Foundation of NJ Masonic Village at Burlington 902 Jacksonville Road Burlington, NJ NJMasonic.org 7

The Right Call My father, Dominick, had a plethora of ailments, from diabetes and congestive heart failure to dementia. The last time he and I spoke was because of [nurse] Linda Bucklew. With his dementia getting worse over the last year or so, the only way we connected with him was when we could get to see him, and even then it was hard as he slept up to 14 hours a day. Out of the blue one day, my father said to Linda, Can I speak to my son, Chris? Linda, in her busy and hectic day, went out of her way when she did not have to.... She dialed my cell phone and handed the phone to him so we could speak. I was in shock when I answered my phone..., and it was my father. My father and I spoke for 45 minutes. My father s last words to me were, I love you, too, son. I will never forget this act of kindness and unselfishness from Linda the rest of my life. ~ Christopher Grasso 8 8

In a Time of Need As a member of Order of Eastern Star, I had visited the Masonic Home of New Jersey for many years. My husband, Charlie, as well as three of my brothers were Masons, so the whole family knew about the good works that happened at Burlington. Then, after 32 wonderful years of marriage to my husband, I found myself living alone and worrying about what might happen to me if I needed care. It was then that I knew it was time to move to the Home. That was 12 years ago. Even though I ll soon be 92, at the Masonic Village, I can continue to be active and part of the community in which I live. Since it s important to me to give back to the community, I do a lot of volunteering. I like to pitch in and to help others when I can. I also am a member of the Village s Choir and occasionally I still get to sing a solo. I feel I ve had a great life. MASONIC VILLAGE AT BURLINGTON A couple weeks ago, I fell in the bedroom of my beautiful Compass Pointe apartment. Help came right away it was so reassuring. That s how I ve found everyone who works here at the Masonic Village. The staff is very caring and always ready to lend a helping hand. I thank God every day that I live at the Masonic Village. The care is outstanding, and the amenities are wonderful. I want to keep doing, and am so glad that I can. ~ Phyllis Caparn Does the Masonic Charity Foundation live up to its mission? 92% of team members surveyed said YES Your Gifts at Work Scholarship and Youth Programs To help worthy students fulfill their educational goals, the Masonic Charity Foundation sponsors seven scholarship programs. Last year, we distributed $97,000 among 44 students pursuing degrees across all academic disciplines. The Foundation also provided $30,000 to sponsor the Masonic Model Student Program. New Jersey educators attend this program at no cost, and learn how to identify and help at-risk students. Eden Alternative The Eden Alternative philosophy promotes active and caring environments which encourage self-worth, camaraderie and excitement for residents and team members. It focuses on eliminating the plagues of loneliness, helplessness and boredom in older adults. Len Weiser, executive director, is a certified Eden Associate. He trained 91 team members in the Eden Alternative principles related to customer service and person-directed practices, improving the life of residents and their families. A generous grant from the Armour-Lewis Family Foundation funded this training. 9 9

Community Impact Striving to use your gifts in the most efficient ways possible, while also fulfilling our goal of giving back to the local community, Masonic Village, Acacia Hospice and its team members implemented creative ideas in 2016: To help students experience professions in health care, several team members partnered with Burlington Township High School for the Pursuing Adulthood Through High School (PATH) program and invited students to watch them at work. Students from Burlington Township School District and Rowan College at Burlington County have also benefited from shadowing, internships and job offers. In 2016, team members raised money for the New Jersey Special Olympics, sponsored a Breast Cancer Remembrance Tree, participated in Movember events to raise awareness of men s health issues, sold T-shirts and sponsored an Alzheimer s Remembrance Tree in support of Alzheimer s awareness, and organized a food drive to support the Burlington County Food Bank. The Masonic Village at Burlington will see $4 million in energy savings over 20 years at no capital expense, thanks to the installation of a natural gas combined heat and power (CHP) system supplying heat and electricity, as well as lighting and boiler upgrades. A Family Affair You are all very special in providing such wonderful care in this challenging field of nursing. It is evident each patient is treated as a family member. I would also like to extend my thanks for your compassion to me and my family during the last week of my mother s struggle. Your concern for her comfort and ours was much appreciated. I was greatly touched to see each of her caregivers come in for a last goodbye as they left their shift. I do not know what more I can say to express my gratitude because thank you just seems so inadequate. ~ Meredith Alfors 10

With your support, team members provide patients with the comfort and care they and their families deserve. As a last salute to veterans who receive hospice care, Acacia Hospice participates in the We Honor Veterans program and has achieved the highest ranking of Four Stars. Created through a joint initiative between the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the program s goal is to ensure veterans have access to the highest quality end-of-life care. Acacia Hospice lights a tree in patriotic colors every year from Veterans Day through the holidays to honor those who are serving and who have served in the Armed Forces. Each light on the Tree of Honor represents a veteran, and Burlington County residents are encouraged to honor a veteran by submitting a name. To honor veteran patients, whether at Masonic Village, other facilities or their private home, Acacia team members ceremoniously drape a U.S. flag over the veteran at the time of death and officially escort him or her to the waiting funeral home vehicle. After requesting flag donations from the public, Acacia was overwhelmed to receive 50 flags. The outpouring of support has helped to ensure every soldier receives a proper farewell. They gave us comfort and stability to go through the final stages of my dad s life. ~ Jim M. 11
