People who had feared war began hoping for a brighter tomorrow. This hopeful spirit of 2018, unfortunately, did not extend to North Korean TB sufferers.

2 2018 Real Hope for a Brighter Tomorrow Annual Report Most people are surprised when I tell them that the s multidrug-resistant tuberculosis(mdr-tb) program faced even greater challenges in 2018 than in the previous year. On the surface, the overall situation improved dramatically. Progress in inter-korean relations was mirrored by an easing of tensions surrounding the Korean peninsula. People who had feared war began hoping for a brighter tomorrow. This hopeful spirit of 2018, unfortunately, did not extend to North Korean TB sufferers. Stronger sanctions that took effect at the end of 2017 limited all humanitarian assistance in 2018 except for the most basic emergency aid. The second blow to tuberculosis work in North Korea was the announced withdrawal of the Global Fund in late spring. For ten years the Global Fund has provided regular TB medications as well as some support for MDR-TB treatment. Although the Global Fund will continue to ship medications through the beginning of 2020, its departure could leave the as the only outside source of tuberculosis treatment support. The third challenge came in late summer with a tightening of travel restrictions to North Korea for US citizens. In November the received a humanitarian exemption from the UN Security Council, making it possible for us to ship 20 pre-fabricated patient wards to Sadong MDRTB Center. In December the US government announced that it is considering loosening travel restrictions on US citizens. Widespread concern about the announced withdrawal of the Global Fund, furthermore, may mean that a way may be found to fill the significant gap in TB assistance. Thanks to our generous donors, we are grateful to report that EugeneBell s MDR-TB program continues to grow, despite the challenges. Though far too small to meet the needs of all North Korean MDR-TB patients, we hope our efforts will inspire others to join in this work. Unlike healthy people, tuberculosis sufferers cannot wait for the political and diplomatic situation to improve. 4 Treatment Center Story Memories of a Caregiver Sadong MDR-TB Center I Want to Spend My Life Treating Tuberculosis Taking a patient who was carried into our center and returning them to health so that they can walk home is a miracle that we cannot accomplish on our own - It is a miracle that donor like you made possible. In the gardens around the treatment center, the spring flowers were in full bloom. Smiling, new graduates the patients who completed the treatment program wore wreaths made of delicate origami cranes. Among the many graduates, Jae-bong was particularly encouraging. Jae-bong s wife, who attended his graduation ceremony, had taken a day off from work to celebrate the occasion. She had supported Jae-bong through the seven years he spent suffering from tuberculosis before entering EugeneBell s MDR-TB program. At his graduation day, a day she never thought would come, she could not stop weeping for joy. Saying she was so happy that she ran all 06 the way to the center, Jae-bong s wife asked us to thank his sponsor before breaking into tears once again. When Jae-bong first came to our center, he was so weak he needed a wheelchair. On that day, his wife accompanied him, her face filled with despair. They knew this treatment was his last chance. She said that during the previous years, she had devoted herself to helping her husband in his struggle with tuberculosis, and was so grateful when he received his first box of MDR-TB medicine. Fighting the indigestion and itchy rashes that came as side effects to the medicine, Jae-bong stuck with the program for the sake of his family and for the sponsor who sent him his medicine every six months. His voice trembled as he thanked us at his graduation. It was a truly heartwarming moment that brought tears to the eyes of our delegation members too. This was made possible because of you, our supporters. You brought happiness back to this couple. Such beautiful moments will continue as long as our donors continue their awe-inspiring devotion to saving those in need. People Who Give Hope Patients! Please introduce yourself. Memories of a Patient A Donor s Story Hello! I am Dr. Yoon Gyeong So, a physician serving on the staff of the Sadong Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) Center. I have been here since 2004-over ten years. I decided to work in this field because I wanted to relieve the mental and physical suffering of tuberculosis patients. You must have experienced some difficult times during those ten years. There have been difficult times, of course. My heart hurts most when a patient does not respond well to treatment. Patients suffer from many side effects such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, joint pain, etc. The ones who suffer the most are those who have abdominal pain. I remind them that Taking treatment is also a form of combat. You must do what you can to make a full recovery, not only for yourself but also for your family. With words like this I try to encourage patients so they will not give up on treatment. During difficult times my patients really try, fighting against themselves when they are tempted to give up hope. You have said that tuberculosis treatment is your mission in life. What about this work gives you the most satisfaction? It is impossible to express my joy when patients leave the center after making a full recovery. This is why I want to work for tuberculosis patients as long as I can. We are proud that the patients at the Sadong MDR-TB Center are motivated to take their medications and have hope of making a speedy recovery and returning to their families. Thank you. My name is David Ho. I am the mission committee leader of Korean Central Presbyterian Church in Sydney, Australia. I learned about the when I became involved in the mission committee of our church. Our church began supporting the Eugene Bell Foundation in Until recently, I thought EugeneBell was just one of the organizations which did good things in North Korea. I learned more about EugeneBell while I was preparing for Dr. Stephen Linton s visit to Sydney in the summer of Even though I talked with Dr. Linton only a short time, I was really impressed. Also, I was deeply touched by EugeneBell s work when I saw the documentary entitled Out of Breath. I was so fascinated that I watched it several times. I really admire and appreciate EugeneBell s staff and volunteers for treating multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) patients in North Korea. Also, I feel honoured that our church is taking part in supporting patients at Sadong MDR-TB Center. Dr. Linton said if every Korean church supports one patient, it will be possible to eradicate MDR-TB in North Korea. I hope and pray that more Christians and more churches join us in this life-saving work in which our Lord Jesus rejoices. 07
