Bible Reference: Philippians 4:2-3 Cast: Rose, (character from Golden Girls TV show) Dorothy, (character from Golden Girls TV show) Set, Costumes, Light, Sound: standard Props: Time: diapers, box of books 7 minutes Special instructions: getting the characters as close to the Golden Girls as possible would be useful Script: There we go, another 12 cases of baby diapers donated for our First Church of Harmony church nursery! Rose comes on stage, carrying very heavy box of books, drops it on the diapers Careful, careful, careful will you? These are brand new diapers here, donated to the church nursery by Morison s Supermarket! Brand new? Well, I mean, like just how often are people going to give used diapers to the church? Rose, what I am saying is these are the brand new Tiny Trainey Super Padded diapers, advertised on TV no less! I am so excited! Don t get out much do you Dorothy? But, listen, you want to talk excitement, see the books donated to the First Church of Harmony church library. I have arranged for a banner to hang in the library, care to guess what it is going to say on the banner? Quiet, Christians sleeping? A comedian is what you truly are! I plan to hang a banner in the nursery, and it s straight out of the Bible too. We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed. Get it? A little bit of nursery humor there. 2 We noticed, Dorothy, very little bit of humor. But if you have extra room for banners, you should announce the arrival of Tommy Drainey diapers. That s Tiny Trainey. That too. But now you can announce, we look after our children, tops to bottoms. So now who is the comedian? Sorry, guess you could say it s the trickle down effect. Dorothy, solemn: Stop me please, I can t laugh much more! Speaking of which, you should see some of the hilarious books here... let s see there s... How to Leave Them Laughing... After you finish reading them over a several times Rose, you should consider putting them in the church library, others could likely also benefit. Fine, you just go ahead, make fun of the library, but I tell you, it is the first place newcomers come when they visit First Church of Harmony. Likely because you are right across from the washrooms. Actually I will have you know the first place families visit is the nursery. If they aren t pleased with the nursery, they just don t come back. Like the pastor always says, the nursery is the heart and soul of First Church of Harmony. The pastor said that? Not in so many words but I do know that... Ya, ya, ya! As if! You heard what pastor said in his sermon on Sunday. Refresh my memory. He said we should all read every book at least once in the course of the year. He was talking about the books of the Bible, Rose, the books of the Bible. Maybe so, but I know he would feel the same way about our library books as well. First Church of Harmony Page 2

3 Let me tell you, the Board of Elders, they know the nursery is first in line in importance. What would drive you to think that, Dorothy. Did they, or did they not, in the Year-end report list the nursery in top spot, the reference being, as I recall, let me think here, ahh yes, Nursery Building Blocks. I guess that shows that the Board believes that the nursery is the foundation upon which the Church of Harmony will be built. Dorothy, that was under materials to be purchased in the coming year, as in for the nursery, purchase building blocks. As in blocks Dorothy, blocks for kids to play with? Principle still stands. Everyone knows what the Church of Harmony is all... Dorothy stops thinks What is it? You just remembered that you have some overdue books at my library? No, actually I just remembered the name of our church. How many years you have been coming here and all of a sudden now you remember that the name of our church is The Church of Harmony? I am proud of you Dorothy. Listen with me a moment. Harmony. What do you think of if I should say harmony. I guess I would think, Dorothy has left town. Rose, your comedy is putting me in stitches, but I will survive. But think... you and I have been serving here at the Church of Harmony for many years. That is true Dorothy. You change diapers and I do ministry. I hereby declare Be Tolerant with Irritants Day so I shall overlook that comment. Regardless, we have served together at a church called, Harmony yet we aren t showing it, are we? It? First Church of Harmony Page 3

4 Now I think I know why they withdrew the offer to consider you for the Nobel Prize, Rose. Harmony, Rose! Harmony! Harmony means we should be, like, friendly, when we work together. Guess you are right. People may wonder when we aren t harmonious in the Church of Harmony, d ya think? Or they may even think we should change the church name to Elm Street Community Church. Exactly! People will...(does double take)... Elm Street Community Church? Our church isn t on Elm Street... in fact there is no Elm Street in this town! Not here, but in St. Olaf. St. Olaf? Yes, where I grew up as a child. And I take it that things were not harmonious in Elm Street Community Church? Oh, not true, everyone got along tremendously... well there was that one time when old Art Hotchinflappen stole the tiara off Sadie Flowers as she walked down the aisle at her wedding, but everyone in St. Olaf realized Mr Hotchinflappen had forgotten to take his meds again and so we just... Attempt to zero in, Rose, take deep breaths. There now dear, we were talking about living harmoniously here at First Church of Harmony. You would be amazed the people who use our library here at church, Dorothy. All ages. New Christians. People going through trying times, looking for answers. I gotta give you that. I remember when my husband Frank died, I picked up this book in your library. The God of the Hard Times it was called. Little book, less than a hundred pages. But it really did make a difference. Frank was a good man, Dorothy. Yes he was Rose, a very, very good man. Been six years you know. I still miss him. My kids they do all they can, they visit when they can, but it s not the same. It was good to see your grandchildren in church on Sunday, Dorothy. I know, little Molly was in the nursery. Cutest kid there, no question. First Church of Harmony Page 4

5 You perhaps are forgetting that my Jenna is in the nursery. A close second. (smiles, hugs Rose) A very close second, Rose. The nursery is an important ministry, Dorothy, you have done an incredible job over the years. My neighbors down the street, the Anderson s, they were worried about coming to church, their little Ashley in a wheelchair and all. Ashley is a doll, she is my bud! And Ashley s folks told me that it has really made a difference in Ashley, the way you show such love for her. Ashley won t let her parents miss church because she wants to be with you, Dorothy. This really is some ministry you have here! I noticed the Anderson s checked out some of your books on Sunday. Yes, they are really searching for something to hold on to. Hey listen, I was gonna show you something. In this shipment of books we have the cutest books for nursery age kids. I was wondering, maybe you would want to have some of them in the library? Look, this here one, The Boy Who Gave His Lunch to Jesus. Rose I would love it. And it would show the whole world that folks in the Church of Harmony live in like... harmony. Did I ever tell you about the time in St. Olaf when little Johnnie Twordismort decided to sheer the pastors sheep in the baptismal and someone turned on the water? No, Rose, no actually you haven t, and for that I shall be forever grateful. Come now dear, let s go move all these books into your library. I sure like working harmoniously with you Dorothy! Reminds me of the time in St. Olaf when Mayor Hounten Gormblish s rooster took off across the road and everyone in town... off stage First Church of Harmony Page 5
