2. FINANCIAL 10 COMMANDMENTS PT.II
Start with an Icebreaker Question To start off your small group, briefly share your response to the following question: If you could describe financial management in ONE word, what word would you use? Share with your group. Please Read What To Expect Let s get a big picture of what we ll be learning today Last session, we learned the first 5 Financial 10 Commandments. In this session, we will continue to learn about managing our finances God s way as we discuss Commandments
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS At this time, please break into smaller groups of 2-4 for the discussion question section. Have a great discussion! 1.) Last week we learned the first 5 Financial Commandments. Let s take a moment to review them: Commandment #1: Thou Shalt Manage Money God s Way Commandment #2: Thou Shalt Work Hard Commandment #3: Thou Shalt Not Keep Up With The Kardashians (Do Not Covet) Commandment #4: Thou Shalt Not Impulse Spend Commandment #5: Thou Shalt Create A Budget Which of these commandments spoke the most to you? Share with your group. 2.) COMMANDMENT #6: THOU SHALT MINIMIZE AND PAYOFF DEBT Unfortunately, it is completely common for the average person to be thousands of dollars in debt. Inability to pay off credit card debt and paying minimal monthly payments has become a widespread practice. The book of Proverbs paints a sobering picture of what financial debt truly is. Read the scripture below: The borrower is slave to the lender. (Proverbs 22:7) While many people are so indebted to the point where it feels hopeless to try, this commandment encourages us to take action toward minimizing and paying off our debt. With God in it, there is hope for a debt-free life! Have you ever cleared your name of any type or amount of debt? How did it feel to do so? Share with your group. 3.) COMMANDMENT #7: THOU SHALT HONOR GOD FIRST Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine. (Proverbs 3:9-10) This commandment and this scripture reminds us that when we choose to honor God first in any area of our lives, including our finances, God will bless it. Can you think of an area in your life that God has blessed because you chose to honor Him first in it? Share with your group. (i.e. family, career, etc.) 19
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 4.) COMMANDMENT #8: THOU SHALT PAY YOURSELF SECOND Whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow. (Proverbs 13:11) This commandment speaks to the principle of saving money. Saving is making an advanced decision that you re going to take a percentage of your income and put it away. According to the book of Proverbs, you don t necessarily need to deposit large amounts of money in a savings account, however, God honors the faithfulness and wisdom of those who save. Would you say you re more of a spender or saver? Share with your group. 5.) COMMANDMENT #9: THOU SHALT NOT MAKE ANY MAJOR FINANCIAL DECISIONS WITHOUT WISE COUNSEL God works in our lives in different ways, including through other people. God uses people in our lives to speak to, encourage, and correct us. However, it is ultimately up to us to allow these people to help us. The Word of God talks about this. Read the scripture below: Plans succeed through good counsel. (Proverbs 20:18) Do you seek wise counsel regarding your financial decisions? How has that helped you? If not, can you identify anyone in your life who you can ask to provide you wise financial counsel? Share with your group. 6.) COMMANDMENT #10: THOU SHALT TRUST GOD And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:19) Do you believe that God is able to meet all your needs? Why or why not? Share with your group. 20
WHAT WILL YOU DO? Commandment #6: Thou Shalt Minimize and Payoff Debt Commandment #7: Thou Shalt Honor God First Commandment #8: Thou Shalt Pay Yourself Second Commandment #9: Thou Shalt Not Make Any Major Financial Decisions Without Wise Counsel Commandment #10: Thou Shalt Trust God Which ONE of these commandments is the most difficult for you to live by? Commandment # : This week, begin taking practical steps toward incorporating this commandment into your financial management. (i.e. Begin saving away, honor God first by practicing generosity at church, create a plan to minimize and payoff debt, etc.) CLOSE IN PRAYER Take a few minutes to close your time together with prayer and to pray for each other s prayer requests. Below is a sample prayer to read if you choose to. You can also choose to write down each other s prayer requests to remember throughout the week. Sample Prayer: God, thank You for all these valuable tools that we learned in this small group session. We know that there is much wisdom in stewarding our finances Your way. Help us to embed these financial commandments in our hearts. Show us how to begin incorporating them in our lives. We pray this in Jesus name, Amen. Group Prayer Requests: Name Request 21
