1 February 2018 Harrisburg Views Musings. Harrisburg s January 20th Bi-Monthly Board Meeting After a lengthy and gently contentious discussion on a particularly thorny subject, Lynn, one of our more courageous homeowners spoke the words that we were all surely on the verge of screaming; I m sure sorry I brought that up! and away we swam into the jaws of another Board Meeting. This was followed by another, somewhat urgent theme in the Community, volunteerism. Wake up people and smell the coffee! We need volunteers to keep our Community dues down, get to know one another and continue creating something beautiful here. In This Issue: Musings President s Message Birthdays Hiking History Meet & Greet Health and Well Being Our new Maintenance Supervisor, Luis Segovia, introduced himself. He is wonderful and capable. I hope we did not frighten him too much! We need Community members to run for at least four vacancies coming up on the board. Get those short biographies into Marlene by February 12th. This is important stuff y all if we want to continue to govern and manage ourselves instead of paying a management firm to do it. That thought makes me nervous! Let s feed the soul of this community. I don t know about the rest of you campers out there but this meeting lifted my spirits. Nobody died and I believe in us all again. 2 Well here we are into February already. It seems as though January passed so fast. Perhaps it was because we had so many fun things going on in Harrisburg that we just lost track of time. That s one of the things that make this place so special; there are always things to do with friends and neighbors. Speaking of friends and neighbors, we want to welcome our new homeowners and encourage you to come out to our events and join in on the fun. Karen Brunette Feb. 3 Loran Dixon Feb. 3 Naomia Rogers Feb. 9 Donna Hunter Feb. 12 John Parker Feb 12 January finally brought some much needed rain to our area. We are always thankful for the moisture when it comes. We had our Bi-monthly meeting in January and had a great turnout with our homeowners. There was much discussion on how to improve communication between board members and residents. This discussion led to some great ideas that should be helpful in bringing us closer together as a community. As nice as it is here in Harrisburg there are always ways to make things even better. These discussions are so helpful in trying to maintain the family atmosphere that exists in our community. We want to welcome Julie Richards as our new manager of our monthly newsletter. I have no doubt that she will do a wonderful job. If you have items that you would like to see in the newsletter, let Julie know. Bill Timmerman Feb. 13 Finally, I want to encourage those of you who have considered running for a position on the board to please do so. Your thoughts and ideas would be helpful in moving the work forward as we manage our great community. Enjoy February. It will be over before you know it. Dallas Cantrell Feb. 14 Thought for the month- Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you ll start having positive results. 3 HIKING QUAIL CREEK RESERVOIR-EAST OVERLOOK This trail follows an old road along the east side of the Quail Creek reservoir with excellent views of the lake. On the return route there is a cliff with numerous petroglyphs. To reach the trail follow 5300W south past the water plant. Turn east onto the Scout Camp road and follow this road east and then north along the fence. There are signs marking the direction to the Scout Camp. Park at the base of the hill which goes over the ridge to the Scout Camp and Quail Creek Ranch. The trailhead is marked with signage. The trail travels past the east end of the main dam and then uphill to a lake overlook. From here you travel downhill to the secondary dam. Cross the dam and travel down the road on the backside of this dam. There are a couple of small petroglyphs on the left side near the bottom. The return route then follows the road through the Quail Creek Ranch. Pass through the gate into the ranch. This gate has a sign saying to please shut the gate after passage. On the far end of the ranch you come to a white fence and automatic gate. You can pass around this fence on the right hand side where it joins the rock cliff. Just before this gate look up at the cliff on the right side and you will see numerous petroglyphs. While travelling through the ranch do not leave the road as the area is patrolled by a dog which we have never seen. There is a warning sign as you exit the ranch. From here you pass by the Scout Camp and up and over the ridge to return to your vehicle. Trail length is about 3 miles total with 300 foot elevation climb. Don Axford Orson B. Adams Home This home was built between 1862 and 1865 when Harrisburg was a Mormon farming community of at least sixteen Then families. It is believed that the stone work was done by stonemason Glover McMullin and his two sons who did much of the stone work around Harrisburg. Now William M. Emett was the last person to inhabit the Adams home until his death in The Adams house is the only intact structure that remains of the short-lived Mormon pioneer settlement of Harrisburg. Orson B. Adams was a Veteran of the Mormon Battalion and in the spring of 1862, Adams moved his family to Harrisburg. 3

4 MEET & GREET WELCOME NEW NEIGHBORS Bob & Patty Eldridge 14 Red Bluff Both Patty & Bob are retired small business owners. They love to travel and see what the world has to offer. They have been living in Lake Havasu City, AZ. but needed to leave the summer heat to come to Harrisburg. The minute they entered the community they fell in love with it. They find the people friendly, the area beautiful and clean. This is it! Dennis & Shirley Law 96 Overlook Both Shirley and Dennis are retired. They discovered this little development last summer when camped at the KOA. Also, discovered some of their ancestors settled here and one is buried at the little pioneer cemetery. As they walked through the community they fell in love with it. They are very happy to be able to live here! Richard and Cindy Roberson 47 Red Bluff Cindy works as the road Supervisor for the Madison County Rd. Dept. in Madison County. Richard is retired from the Forest Service. They have 2 daughters, 2 sons, and 11 grandchildren. Richard enjoys the cooler weather and likes to snowmobile. Cindy enjoys the warmer weather and likes to garden, sew, razor riding and anything outdoors. They enjoy their privacy. Deon Jensen & Carolyn Fugal 124 Overlook Deon and Carolyn bought a park model 2 years ago in Harrisburg. They love it here and wanted to stay. The house across the street came up for sale and they were happy for the chance to buy it. 4

5 HEALTH & WELL BEING Peace Sweet Peace Now! Isn t that all any of us want? No matter what the status of our health, finances, relationships or the weather is, peace is what we are all inwardly seeking. The Power to Change Truth be told we are as good as our thoughts. What and how we think can rob us of our inner peace. Being into our thoughts is a challenge but very doable, no matter our age. Remember a thought can work us up and a thought can work us down. It s as simple as exchanging stinking thinking for thoughts of gratitude. Practice, practice, practice and enjoy more peaceful moments. Your body will thank you. 7 In The Kitchen Cowboy Caviar Hi, This is Julie and I am the new editor for the Harrisburg Views Newsletter. My desire for this journey is to gather a lot of ideas from everyone. I invite you all to share from your brainstorming. These are some ideas that have been shared for column subjects: As I See It: Where people could voice their concerns and thoughts for and about the Community along with ideas that could make a difference in a good way. This is not a column for being negative or a forum for calling individuals by name so as to shame ourselves into change. It would be a great column to use for creating ideas that would improve the Community and our morale. A place where people could express their hopes and wishes for this ever-evolving Community. Pets About: Suggestions on how to keep your pet healthy, clean, and happy. Wheel Talk: Let s share tips on how to keep our vehicles running smoothly and efficiently. Among Us-Our Stories: Share interesting life experiences of our Community members. Did You Know?: Interesting facts about the Community and/or individuals. Dear Snarla: A column like Dear Abby Talent Sharing: Share poems, stories, etc. Ongoing Historical Articles/with pictures: Interviews with old-timers who possess a great depth of knowledge of the history of Harrisburg. So hvnews@harrisburgestates.com This healthy cowboy caviar recipe (also known as Texas caviar) Serve it as a dip, salsa or salad it ll be a hit at your next party.
