2 I. John was 'Amazed' at the Love of God (v.1) A. Behold what manner of love B. John couldn t find the words to explain God s love. John 3:16; For God so loved the world Rom. 5:6 & 8 - For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

3 C. Lessons in love that John had learned. Eph. 3:17-19: 17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height 19 to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. D. Such love demanded love in return.

4 II. John 'Appreciated' His Position as a child of God. v.1-2 A. That we should be called the children of God B. A simple fisherman, now is called a son of God. C. This Son-ship causes conflict with the world. John 15: If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, A servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. 21 But all these things they will do to you for My name s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me.

5 D. Our Son-ship begins with the New Birth. Now we are children of God (V2). 2 Cor. 5: 14-17, For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; 15 and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again. 16 Therefore, from now on, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. John 6:47, Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life.

6 III. John 'Anticipated' Christ s Return When He Would be Like Him (Vv.2-3) A. John knew the failures of this life. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. (1:8). Romans 7:14-21 & Vs.24-25: O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.

7 B. John longed for a better day though. 1 Cor. 13:12, 12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. C. John longed for when we shall be changed. 1 Cor. 15: Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

John wanted to be like His Savior and Lord NOW! 2 Cor. 10:4-5: 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, Job 19:25-27: For I know that my Redeemer lives, And He shall stand at last on the earth; 26 And after my skin is destroyed, this I know, That in my flesh I shall see God, 27 Whom I shall see for myself, And my eyes shall behold, and not another. How my heart yearns within me!

9 Job 14:14-15 If a man dies, shall he live again? All the days of my hard service I will wait, Till my change comes. 15 You shall call, and I will answer You; You shall desire the work of Your hands.

10 1 John 3:1 Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!
