1 First Evangelical Lutheran Church 305 West 5 th Street North Platte, Nebraska "THE TRUTH MAKES US FREE. REFORMATION DAY 2018 M onday - Thursday 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM Closed: Fri -Sun Contact Us... Phone: Fax: frstluth@msn.com John 8: Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free. 33 They answered him, We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, You will be made free? 34 Jesus answered them, Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever. 36 So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. I served as pastor in a congregation which was just a few blocks away from Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa. Seminarians would attend our worship at Holy Trinity. I came to know many students over the eleven years I served in that place. One of the most memorable was a man who served as intern at my congregation. His name was Dave. Dave knew very well about freedom and the lack of it. Many years before I met Dave, he had been a high-powered executive at an international company which was experiencing great success in the marketplace. The growth was staggering. It was in that place in life that he committed an unthinkable life ending crime. While intoxicated, he drove his car through a red light, killing two small children. He will live with a haunting remorse his entire life. Yet, something happened to that irresponsible executive while in prison. CONTACT NUMBERS: Pastor: Rev. Arnold Flater Church Council, President: Jerry Stoll: Custodian: Volunteers Financial Secretary: Claudette Nelson Music & Preschool Director: Gail Jensen: Office Manager: Olene Beck: Jr. F.L.Y.: Emily McCreery: Sr. F.L.Y.: Mindee Mohr: Sunday School: Jill Falcon, Although he had been connected to the church in various ways up until that time, Dave heard the Truth of the Gospel in a new way in prison. The power of reformation took hold of his life in a dramatic way. He took an online course in pastoral theology while in prison. After fourteen years in prison, he was given an early release. He then enrolled and was accepted at Wartburg Seminary. After his internship at my congregation and seminary graduation, he was called to serve a congregation in Iowa. The Freedom Dave experiences is the same that you and I know every day. Even now there are those who, perhaps rightly, feel that he should still be incarcerated. The gift of the Reformation is that Martin Luther reminds us that while we were, and it seems still are, prisoners to sin, Christ makes us free! Here in lies the freedom so carefully and boldly proclaimed by Jesus in a time in which his hearers were slaves to a powerful regime with a world-wide grip of power. You are FREE. Yes, you are free indeed. Whatever attempts to blur or confuse that truth stands in violation of the Gospel. Celebrate Reformation! Celebrate this truth, "THE TRUTH MAKES US FREE.

2 Congregational Council Meeting Highlights, October 21, 2018 MISSION STATEMENT: To make Christ known in our love for one another, by service to our neighbor, and in worship of God.
