WINNER OF THE 2005 MARSHALL HOPE AWARD FOR BEST DEPARTMENT NEWSLETTER IN THE SUVCW!!! G.A.R. THE SONS OF UNION VETERANS OF THE CIVIL WAR THE CLARION CALL S.U.V.C.W VOLUME No. 7 ISSUE No. 1 January 2007 Six Unknown Massachusetts Soldiers Return Home by Brother Ed Knight, L.A. Tifft Camp #15, Springfield 1881 T h e S kirm ish at B lackb u rn s F ord w as a p relu d e to th e F irst B attle of B u ll R u n On July 18, 1861, the six unknown soldiers from the 1st Massachusetts Infantry were killed at B lackburn s F ord in C enterville, V A. U nion G eneral Irvin M cd ow ell pushed U nio n G eneral D aniel T yler s brigade com m anded by C o lonel Israel B. R ichardson, tow ards tw o river crossings that w ould be crucial in the upcom ing battle. A t M itchell s F ord, he w as facing G eneral M illedge L. B onham and at B lackburn s F ord he w as facing Colonel James Longstreet reinforced by General Jubal A. E arly. A t B lackburn s F ord, T yler sent the 1st M ass. 2nd Michigan, 3rd Michigan and the 12th New York Infantry. At the end of the day, the Confederate forces won the day and prevented the Union army from having these two important crossings. You will remember what happened two days later at the First Battle of Bull Run when the Union forces were forced to retreat over the single stone bridge to the west. The Union suffered 19 killed, 38 wounded and 26 missing. Bourne, MA Appropriately it rained on the day that the six soldiers returned home for a proper burial in the national cemetery located in Bourne, Massachusetts. The weather reflected the mood of laying to rest the fallen. A combined effort of various organizations to include the S.U.V.C.W., V.F.W, American Legion, Mass. National Guard, and Civil War Re-enactors to see that they were buried honorably took place. The procession marched behind the beat of the fife and drum. Upon arrival at the ceremony site, pall bearers delivered the six caskets to their place prior to burial. The solemn ceremony that took place with a few words from the Cemetery Director Paul McFarland followed by Department Commander Perley Mellor. Department Chaplain Robert Knight assisted with the escorting of the widows and took his part in saying a few words. The six soldiers were recovered near where they fell (Continued on page 2) Contact the Editor at: THE CLARION CALL 20 Howland Terrace, Worcester, MA williegrout25@verizon.net
Six Unknown Massachusetts Soldiers Return Home (Continued from page 1) in Centerville, VA. Their discovery and continuation of their journey began in 1995 when a member of a relic and artifact organization, Kevin Ambrose came across the graves. The location of which would be a future restaurant. Excavation was begun and the unearthed remains were eventual delivered to Dalton Rector, a descendant of a confederate soldier, who did research at the Smithsonian Institute using their clothes, buttons, and shoes to determine who they were. He was convinced that they were in the 1st Massachusetts Infantry and 6 of the 24 soldiers lost by that regim ent. M r. R ector s best estim ation nam ed the six possibilities but w ithout DNA testing cannot positively identify each individually. The names of the six unknowns are possibly: William H. Smart of Cambridge, Albert F. Wentworth of Chelsea, Thomas Roome of Boston, Gordon Forrest of Malden, George Bacon of Chelsea and James Silvey of Boston. Only God knows for sure exactly who they were. In time with enough funds perhaps there will be DNA testing to determine exactly who each one was. That of course, is irrelevant to the need of a proper memorial and burial which these men received on that dark rainy day of June 10, 2006 (which also happens to be the birthday of the U.S. Army, an organization which these men were a part of). G.A.R. POST 26 FLAG HOLDERS RECOVERED Worcester, MA. The gravesites of Grand Army of the Republic Post No. 26 Members Byron N ourse, A drian N ourse and W illiam M. O lin now have their P ost s bronze flag ho lders, w ith flags in place, proudly waving over their graves. The flag holders were planted by Department Treasurer Ed Norris and Department Council Member Reynaldo Rodriguez of Camp 25 in Worcester. The flag holders were discovered and purchased at a flea market, by a New Hampshire resident who kindly contacted the local S.U.V.C.W. Camp, Members of the Camp arranged to have the them returned to Massachusetts. It is unknown exactly where they came from, but possibly from Roxbury, Massachusetts, where Post 26 was located. The removal and sale of such holders is illegal. However, past experience has shown that little can be done to stop thieves unless caught and proven. Even then, the penalties are never stiff enough. Rather than a negative, a positive has been made from this recovery, and the recovered markers will continue to be placed at the graves of G.A.R. Post 26 Members. If you are aware of a Post 26 Member who is buried in your area, please contact Department Council Member Rey Rodriguez and he will arrange to have a flag holder planted DEPARTMENT ENCAMPMENT TO BE HELD IN BOXBOROUGH The Department of Massachusetts will be holding its 125th Department Encampment this year on Friday, April 13th and Saturday, April 14th, at the Holiday Inn in Boxborough, Massachusetts. This year, Senior Vice Commander-in- Chief Charlie Kuhn will be attending the Department Encampment, standing in for Commander-in-Chief Jim Pahl, who will be attending Lincoln Day observances in Springfield, Illinois on the same days. Unless something unforeseen takes place at the National Encampment in St. Louis this August, Brother Kuhn should be elected Commander-in-Chief for All Members are urged to attend the Department Encampment in April, and give a proper welcome to our next Commander-in-Chief. 2
124 TH DEPARTMENT ENCAMPMENT HELD IN WAKEFIELD Wakefield, MA: On April 28 and 29 th the 124 th Encampment of the Department of Massachusetts Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War was held at Lord Wakefield Hotel in Wakefield, MA. The encampment began on Friday April 28 th, with the annual Memorial Service and Camp Fire D.J.V.C. Kevin Tucker gave an interesting PowerPoint presentation on Civil War Monuments and sculptures in Boston. On Saturday, April 29 th, during the Department Encampment business session, a by-law change was proposed that would eliminate the Department Commander as a requires second endorser of Department checks being issued by the Department Treasurer. Past Department Commanders that were present at the session reported that they had never needed to physically sign the checks, and the use of a rubber stam p w as the practice for a at least the past thirty years. Physical distances between Department Commanders and Department Treasurers made the performance of Department business difficult. The proposed by-law change would allow the Department Treasurer, with the knowledge and consent of the Department Commander, to be the sole signatory on Department checks, in order to conduct the business of the Department more efficiently. It is hoped that this new process will expedite Department business. In the afternoon business session, elections were held. After the unopposed elections of Brother Perley Mellor to Department Commander and Brother Kevin Tucker to Senior Vice Commander, the position of Junior Vice Commander had two candidates: Brother George Maple and Brother Steven Twining. Brother Maple won the contest, and was elected. Three council members were nominated and elected unopposed: John Bates, PDC, Peter Rotando and Reynaldo Rodriguez. The office of Department Treasurer had two candidates: Brother Bill Ryerson, PDC, and Brother Ed Norris. By a close margin, Brother Ed Norris was elected. For the office of Secretary, Brother Frank Haley was nominated and elected unopposed. CHARLESTOWN CIVIL WAR MONUMENT REDEDICATED Chalestown, MA: On Sunday April 9, 2006, Members of the Department of Massachusetts, S.U.V.C.W. joined with other Veterans organizations in the rededication the Civil War Monument in Charlestown. The monument, in the shadow of the famed Bunker Hill Monument, has been largely ignored by the public, due to the rich Revolutionary War fame of Charlestown and its Bunker Hill Monument. Members of the American Legion in Charlestown decided that it was time to recognize the memory of the men of Charlestown who fought in the Civil War. They contacted Dept. JVC Kevin Tucker and asked if the S.U.V.C.W. would like to participate in the rededication of their Civil War monument. Members from Camps across the state participated in the ceremony, and have been invited back for another ceremony in
Memorial Day Event at the National Cemetery in Bourne, MA Bourne, MA: On Sunday May 28, 2006, Members of the Department of Massachusetts joined other Veterans organizations at the Bourne National Cemetery for the annual observance of Memorial Day. A parade, which included all the participating organizations, marched from the main gate of the National Cemetery to the parade grounds, where a ceremony to honor all Veterans took place. The program included Frank T ucker, P D C and C olonel of the 11th M assachusetts Infantry reading G eneral L ogan s O rder Number 11, establishing Memorial Day, to all those present. There was also a guest speaker who reminded everyone of the 1950 law that required the President of the United States to reaffirm Memorial Day, including the time of day for the entire county to pay their respects. Until noon on Memorial Day, all flags on poles in every public building and outside civilian homes should be at half-mast, and at 3:00 PM, in unison, everyone should observe a moment of silence or prayer, in honor of the memories of our war Veterans, both past and present. After the speeches ended, wreaths were placed on the memorials on the parade grounds.. One of the wreaths was placed by Department Commander Perley Mellor. Immediately following the ceremony, Department Members marched to the grave of the Unknown Civil War Soldier, where PDC Frank Tucker led a solemn ceremony. This included the placing of three flowers, one red, one white and one blue, each with its own meaning. As each flower was placed, a few words were spoken as to their meaning. The ceremony participants placing the flowers were Department Commander Perley Mellor, DSVC Kevin Tucker, Department Secretary Frank Haley, Department Council Chairman John W. Bates, PDC, Brother Frank Tucker, PDC, Brother Ed Kelley, and Brother Tim Callahan. The firing squad, which consisted of Brothers Paul Jancewicz of Camp 104 and Richard Luftkin of Camp 18, shot three volleys into the air as a salute to the unknown soldier. The color guard included of Brothers Rick Eccleston and Department Council member Rey Rodriguez. Elm Park Memorial Wreath laying Worcester, MA. On Sunday May 28, 2006, in the location of the oldest public park in the nation, Department Junior Vice Commander George Maple, joined by Camp 25 Chaplain Edmund Ahaesey and other members, joined with other patriotic and Veterans organizations for a unique memorial ceremony. From a bridge that crossed Elm Pond, wreaths were dropped in to the pond to honor those war Veterans who fought and lost their lives at sea. This memorial observance was started by the Ladies of the G.A.R., and has been revived for Memorial Day. Memorial Day Observance in Worcester Worcester, MA: On May 29, 2006, Willie Grout Camp #25 attended a memorial ceremony at the G.A.R. lot in H ope C em etery, the site of their C am p s first public appearance in Camp Members listened to guest speaker and leader of the Massachusetts National Guard, Brigadier General Oliver J. Mason. The Burncoat High School JROTC put on a presentation of what Decoration Day meant. After one of their cadets read a Civil War letter, she was assisted by others, in period clothing, in placing a flow er on the gravesite of her lost soldier. T he ceremony climaxed with two A10 fighter planes flying directly overhead, followed by the playing of T aps. Immediately following the ceremony, Members conducted separate memorial tributes at the graves of two Worcester Medal of Honor recipients, Thomas Plunkett and Charles Pinkham. Members then traveled to St. Johns Cemetery and conducted a memorial ceremony, followed by a trip to Rural Cemetery, to memorialize General 4 George H. Ward and the man for whom the Camp is named, Lt. John William Grout.

A Confederate Veteran Lies Buried in Massachusetts By Department Graves Registration Officer Steven Twining Ware, MA: It was Monday and I was committed to march in a parade with my camp. I had driven to Springfield, an hour from home the night before so I could sleep a little later before going to the parade. The parade was to be held all the way across the state, about a four hour drive from home. It was a very overcast day and rain as expected. We loaded up our little caravan of three vehicles and headed east. We were almost to the parade site when we received a call, that due to the current conditions, the parade was called off. We said our good byes and headed for home, knowing that we would be coming back the following Sunday, for the rain date that was set in advance for the parade. My only passenger was Past Department Commander, Bob Knight, my frequent traveling partner for S.U.V.C.W. events. H e asked, H ave you ever seen the C onfederate V eteran s grave in W are, M A., I said, N o I hadn t, I w ould like to see it. H e said w e w ill go after lunch. B ob, w ith his perfect sense of direction began to guide m e to his cho ice for lunch. T he S alem Cross Inn. It turns out that it was a very nice place and we had a lot of fun because we were wearing our uniforms. We were stopped and asked questions by many of the guests, some of whom asked to have their photographs taken with us, which we thought was a rare occasion to spread the word of the S.U.V.C.W. A fter lunch, w e headed for W are, A spen G rove C em etery, and the C onfederate soldier s grave. The sky had turned nasty again and it was sprinkling when we arrived. Undaunted by the weather, P.D.C. Knight bounded out of the car to find the grave we were looking for. I, on the other hand, slowly emerged from my car trying to baby my arthritis knees that were explaining there displeasure with the long ride. I started to look around and found that there were Civil W ar veteran s everyw here. I began taking photographs of them. T here w as also a m onum ent to the soldiers from Ware that had served during the Civil War. In about fifteen minutes, I heard P.D.C. Knight calling to me. He had found the grave. I followed the direction of his voice and found P.D.C. Knight standing on the brow of a hill proudly pointing out the gravestone that read H enry A bair, C onfederate S oldier, P laced by G.A.R. Upon examining the gravestone and its surroundings, I noticed that there were two American flags, one on either side of the stone, both flag holders indicated that Henry Abair was in fact a Confederate Veteran. I could not let that stand. I felt that at least one of the flags should be a Confederate flag. My next opportunity to be traveling alone for this function and thought that I would have a chance to visit Aspen Grove Cemetery one more time for the purpose of placing the S tars and B ars above H enry A bair s grave. I knew that there w as a D epartm ent O fficer s m eeting after the N.E.R.A. m eeting. I arrived late at the meeting at the Sheraton Hotel in Wakefield because of some unforeseen issues that developed before I left Pittsfield. I arrived at 11:10 and was promptly informed that the officers meeting had been cancelled because of a lack of attendance. I spoke with several brothers and sisters about the situation and grave registration before I headed for Ware. This time I used the directions given to me by Brother Ed Knight thereby making it a much shorter trip. I drove to the cemetery and found the grave immediately and exchanged the flags (continued on page 8). 6
Raise the Arm Encampment Amesbury, MA: Not even the floods to keep this important event from taking place. The weather in the northeastern part of Massachusetts was unpleasant to say the least. However, over the weekend of May 20th & 21st 2006 at the Woodsom Farm, many attended a special encampment. What made it most special was that funds raised from the event made it possible for a sizeable donation to the restoration of the 11th Massachusetts Infantry monument on the Gettysburg Battlefield. The monument was damaged by vandals but through the efforts of citizens like Brother Paul Jancewicz there is some hope for repair. Brother Jancewiek certainly was not alone to make the event a success but he was the driving force which is very much needed and he rose to the occasion to raise m o ney in order to R aise the A rm. In November 2006, during the Remembrance day weekend trip to Gettysburg, Brother Jancewicz was able to donate $ to assist in repairing the monument. A louder than loud Clarion Call Huzzah goes out to Brother Jancewicz and all those who worked hard to make the event possible. T w o A rm s in A m esbury planned for June 2-3,2007 at Woodsom Farm. For more information contact Brother Pual Jancewicz at jancyman@adelphia.net 2008 NATIONAL ENCAMPMENT TO BE HELD MASSACHUSETTS! The 127th S.U.V.C.W. National Encampment will be held in Massachusetts. Under the direction of the Department Commander, a committee chaired by Senior Vice Commander Kevin Tucker was formed. The committee has already been given their assignments and have held a few meetings. Of the many topics the committee is working towards is the location of the encampment taking into account all the specific needs of hosting a National event. After thirty plus years the Sons and Auxiliary can be proud to have formed a capable team. The Clarion staff would like to point out that it will still take the membership of the Department to make it work. The committee will be working hard to prepare for the encampment but will need lots of help during the encampment. More to follow as details are made available. Camp #25 & Camp 18 march in Columbus Day Parade On October 8, 2006, Willie Grout Camp #25 marched under the command of A.A. Sherman Camp 18 Brother Peter Rotando, SVR 1st District Commander in the Columbus Day Parade. The camp used the Department Flags which got a long line of standing ovations as it unfurled in the harsh winds of Shrewsbury Street in Worcester, Massachusetts. (NOTE: The Clarion Call wants to publish any and everything every camp is doing, but CAN NOT if the Clarion does not know. If a few camps exclusively send material then those material will always be considered for publication in the CLARION CALL!) 7
Continued from Page 6 Upon leaving Aspen Grove, I decided to drive around the cemetery. I had seen a waterfall through the trees from Aspen Grove and w anted to see if I could find it and find it I did. T here w as a waterfall and right next to it was another cemetery. I of course had to check it out. I found several C ivil W ar V eterans graves in this cemetery as well I left this cemetery with a renewed sense of well being for having found, a previously unknown to me, cemetery containing Civil W ar veterans graves. I headed down Rt. 32 to get to the Mass. Pike to head home when I remembered there was another cemetery that I had passed two weeks prior. It had been too dark to stop then. I still had daylight left this day so I stopped. I found that this cemetery had a large group of Civil War veteran s buried in it. P hotographing the veterans stones, I again headed for hom e. I arrived at m y sister s ho m e in L udlow around 5:30 and w as at once invited to stay for dinner. I finally arrived home at about 8:30 P.M. Two days that could have ended in disaster turned out to be very fruitful for this Graves Registration Officer. Abraham Lincoln visits Worcester State College! Worcester, MA: On February 22, 2006, President Abraham Lincoln performed by Frank Marino of Tewksbury, gave a presentation to an audience of college students, staff and faculty members. Mr. Marino, who was guarded by Co E 15th Massachusetts Infantry, S.V.R., (Pvt. George Maple & Pvt. Bob Ducharme) was very informative and answered many questions. Prior and post his presentation Brother Frank Haley and Brother Joe Vecchione of Camp 18 joined Brother Maple and Ducharme in displaying artifacts to include medical supplies, weapons and letters written by civil war soldiers. This event, part of Black History Month was part of a day and night program sponsored by the W.S.C Republican Club and a joint effort of Willie Grout Camp #25 and A.A. Sherman Camp #18. The night program consisted of a presentation on African-American Soldiers in the Civil War by Department Council Officer Rey Rodriguez followed by the showing of the movie G lory. In the process of the two presentations, the S.U.V.C.W. gained a new Member, Alan Skumautz of Franklin, M assachusetts. HENRY WISPALAERE Worcester, MA: On Veterans Day, November 11, 2007, Members of Willie Grout Camp #25 were joined by A.A. Sherman Camp #18 and L.A. Tift Camp #15 in dedicating a stone to a previously unmarked grave. The ceremony marked the first use of the Willie Grout Camp flag as well as the Camps first stone dedication in Rural Cemetery in recent memory. Those on hand to witness the ceremony were pleased with the work done from finding the unmarked grave to the dedication ceremony. It was a very nice fall day when three Sons camps from the Department of Massachusetts got together to dedicate this stone. From Camp 15, Ed Knight blew taps as his w ife, M ary K elly K night, P resident of A uxiliary 10 took pictures of the fine display of civil war gear on the stone itself as well as the ceremony. Camp 18 Member Benjamin Emerick played the fife as the procession marched to the site where the civil war gear was displayed. Posting to the rear of the stone were Camp 25 Member Ed Norris and the U.S. flag and Rey Rodriguez with the camp flag. 10 P assing of a B rother.r obert M. B ettinson Gen. Darius Couch Camp #26 Taunton, MA It is with sorrow we mourn the passage of Brother Robert M. Bettinson on May 30,2006. Brother Bettinson was a World War II veteran, a bombadier on a B-17. On one mission, the pilot and co-pilot were killed, and Brother Bettinson landed the plane. Before the Nordan bomb sight, Brother Bettinson used tin cans as a bomb sight. He will be missed but always remembered. G.A.R. S.U.V.C.W.
