1 MISSOURI OBITUARIES 51 The following obituaries were abstracted from "THE MILLENIAL HARBINGER", a monthly bulletin printed and published by Alexander Campbell at Bethany, Virginia, Co-editors, W 0 K. Pendleton, R. Milligan, and A. W. Campbell. This monthly bulletin of the Christian Church was first published about 1829 and the pages were numbered consecutively throughout the year. Only a very few obituaries were included during the first few years, and none from Missouri. Only deaths of persons who lived in Missouri are recorded here. ADCOCK, Joel Maderson, died at the residence of his father, Joel J. Adcock, 15^ Feb. last. Reported from Millersburg, Callaway Co., Mo. 5 May(l859, p 419). ALEXANDER, Elder John, of Monroe Co., Mo., fell dead In the field one morning last week. He emigrated from Clarke Co., Ky., two or three years ago. Left widow and several children. (The notice was dated 20 Nov. 1844, Boone Co., Mo.) (1845) ALLRED, Louisa P., age 21, died 9 Oct. 1858, at the residence of her father near Edina, Knox Co., Mo. (1859, P 180).".. BELLAMA, Louisa, daughter of Zachariah TUCKER of Kentucky, and wife of John Bellama of Montgomery Co., Mo., died 15 July 1856, (1856, p 416) BENTON, Mrs. Mary Jane, died 21 July 1855 at Maple Grove, Lafayette Co., Mo. (1855, P 597) BOON, Elder Hampton L., died at Fayette, Mo. 25 Mar. 1851, age 49 years. Survived by wife and nine children. (1851, p 500) BROADUS, Benjamin Franklin, of Howard Co., Mo., died in St. Louis, 7 Mar. 1859= Born in Kentucky 5 Nov. 1812, and moved with his father to Mo. as a youth. He was returning to his home from Louisiana when he became ill with pneumonia. Survived by wife and daughter. (1859, p 559) BROOKS, Mrs, Elizabeth, died 10 Aug, 1858, Born 21 Aug in Spotsylvania Co,, Va,; married Thomas Brooks, 5 Dec. 1825, Moved to Mo. in 1824 and raised a numerous family. Her husband died shortly after fall of 1850 and she was left to manage a large estate and provide for a large family. Written by Absalom Rice. (1858, p 538) BRYANT, Sarah F., daughter of James GRAY and consort of James Bryant, died in Florida, Mo., March 26. (1842, p 324) BURCKHARTT, Mrs. Sarah, of Howard Co., Mo., died 8 Oct. 1843, in her 47th years, at her residence. Her husband died nine years ago of cholera. She left children. (1844, p 144)

2 52 MISSOURI OBITUARIES CAMPBELL, Ellen, formerly of Bethany, Va,, died 11 Mar, 1858, at residence of her son-in-law, Thomas F, Campbell, Leavenworth City, Kansas, She was for many years a member of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. She was widow of my father's brother, Archibald Campbell, himself an elder of that church, as was her own father, Thomas CARR. Her brother, Rev. Wm. Carr, was one of the most popular ministers of the Synod of Belfast, and for some years the pastor of a Presbyterian Church in that city. At an advanced age, she became a member of the Christian Church. Her sons, Enos and James Campbell, having migrated to this country and founded Female Seminaries of much reputation, she was induced to migrate some years since to the U. Raised a large family. She was born in Northumberland Co., Ta., and-moved from there to Bracken Co., Ky,, and then to Mo. Her husband is now about 70.(1848, p 540) CHILDERS, Capt. Thomas G., died 21 Dec. 1856, at residence of his son, Henry Childers in Franklin Co,, Mo,, in his 75^ year. He was a native of Greenbrier Co., Va. (1857, P 298) CHILDERS, Henry, died 25 Dec, 1856 of Pneumonia at his residence in Franklin Co., Mo., age 45. A member of the Christian Church for 25 years, (1857, P 298) COFFEY, Mrs. Bettie F,, died at Camden Point, Mo,, 6 Apr, Maiden name was Bettie F, JAMES, She was born in Mercer Co,, Ky,, 6 Nov, 1852, Mother died when she was an infant and she was adopted by her aunt, Mrs Anthony MINTER, of Platte Co, She was married to Dr, E, M, D, Coffey in Platte Co,, 28 June 1854, (1857, P 540) COOKE, Mary Susan, wife of George W, Cooke and eldest daughter of William T, MALLORY of Fayette Co,, Mo,, died 29 Oct, at Booneville, Mo,, age 27 Survived by-husband and two small children, (Dec, 1851) COONS, Elder Joseph, of Callaway Co., died Oct. ljib. He came from Kentucky.about ten years ago and settled near Millersburg. Left wife and children, (1843, p573) CREATH, Susan, wife of Jacob Creath, Jr,, died 16 July 1841, at her residence in Monticello, Lewis Co,, Mo,, age 32 years 8- months, 9 days, (1841, p 539) CROW., Dr. Samuel, died July 26 at his residence near Paris', Mo., age 56.years. DUDLEY and Mary Digges, formerly of Louisa Co., Va., died 21 Jan at residence of Mr. Seneca Digges in Howard Co., Mo.(1855,P 418) DONIPHAN, Mr. A, W., son of Col. A. W. Doniphan of Mo., and a student at Bethany College in Virginia, was drowned in Buffaloe Creek, Tues., the 11th inst. (1858, p 559) DORRIS, Matilda Arm, wife of Dr. J. F. Dorris, and daughter of Maj. Jas, W. and E. E. BUCKNER, died in Moniteau Co., Mo., 6 Jan. last, (1857, P 559) DUNCAN, Mrs, Mary, died 20 Mar. in her 74th year, at residence of her son-in-law, Robert S, BARR in Columbia, Mo. She was born in Va,; at an early age to Ky. Married Daniel Duncan, who settled in Paris, Bourbon Co,, Ky, Husband died in 1855 of cholera, and soon afterwards she came to Mo, to be with her two daughters who had settled in Boone Co, (1849, p 297) EDDLEMAN, James, age 48, died 7 July 1846, in Moniteau Co., Mo. Became a Baptist while in Term., many years ago; embraced the reformation while a resident of Kentucky, and united with the church at Stamping Ground, Scott Co., Ky. Later, he came to Missouri. (1846, Oct.) EDWARDS, Lucy, died 28th Apr., age 78, She was born in Virginia and raised in Kentucky, and within the last few years, moved to Cooper Co., Mo. (i860, p 420) ELLIS, M. E., wife of Dr. R. B. Ellis, senator from Daviess Co, Mo., died in Jefferson City, Mo., 2 Mar, 1845, Left husband and three children, (1845, p 452) EWING, James P,, of Callaway Co,, died 6 Sept 1859, age 65= Born Va,, 15 Mar. 1797= To Mo. in Nov Leaves wife and several children, Hawley WILKERSON, a member of the same church, died the week before. He also left a large family, A few weeks afterwards, brother Henry COONS died, (1860,p 117) FERRIS, Dr, M, A.,died 17 Nov, 1851, age 64, Lived some 22 years in Georgetown, Ky, Came to Mo, about 12 or 14 years ago, and settled in Pettis Co., where he died. (i860, p 480) GILLAM, Martha, wife of Claiborn Gillam, died 10 Oct in her 51st year, in Pike Co., Mo, She was the youngest daughter of Edmund and Catharine BRYANT, formerly of Lincoln Co., Ky. (1856, p.178) GRIST, Benjamin, died 1 Apr Born Virginia, 17 Sept. 1775, To Jackson Co,, Term,, in 1798, Went on a visit to Missouri last fall and died in Morgan Co., Mo. (1845) GROSS, John 0., died 5 Dec, 1856, after a long illness. Left a family. On 20 Jan, 1857, B. Y, Gross, late a student of Bethany College, died of measles. Notice sent in by Washington Huffaker of Haynesville, Mo,, 31 Jan, 1857= (1857, P 298) HENDRICKSON, Sarah, age 77, widow of Benjamin S, Hendrickson, (who died in Pittsburgh in 1838), died 4 May 1860 in Indepen-. dence, Mo,, at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr, John BURNS. (1860, p 599) Letter written by J, Creath, Jr.-, from Palmyra, Mo., 13 Apr, 1848, reports death of B, HOOTEN, wife of Enoch Hooten, and R, STARKS, a widow, "Sister" Starks moved from Bourbon Co., Ky,, to Missouri, and "Sister" Hooten was from David's Fork, Fayette Co., Ky. (1848, p 417) HOPSON, Caroline, wife of Winthrop H. Hopson, died 20 Dec, 1849 at Fayette, Howard Co,, Mo,, age 27. Left husband and six month old daughter. (1850, p 59) HUFF, Mrs. Lucy, wife of Dr. William, died in Johnson Co,, Mo., 22 Nov. 1852, age 62 years. Born in Kentucky; to Mo. with husband in 1857= (1855, P 120) HUGHES, Dr. Joel, of Pike Co., Mo.,, died 5 Mar. 1844, age 48 years. He was born in Virginia and moved to Kentucky when young. (The notice was written from Ashley, Pike Co.) (1844, p 2-39) HUGHES, Mrs. Louisiana, of Howard Co., Mo., wife of James Hughes, died 19 Feb. 1859= She was a daughter of Charles TALBOTT of Campbell Co., Va. Joined the Methodist Church in 1829, age 22. In 1834, moved to Howard Co., and became a member of the Christian Church. (i860, p 119) HURST, Hester U.,' wife, of John Hurst and daughter of Samuel BRYAN of Fayette, N. L, died 8 Aug,, 4 miles from Palmyra. Left her husband and 4 small children. (1848, p 540)

(probably July), age 45= (1859, p 419) JENKINS, Eliza, wife of Theodoric Jenkins, Esq., died in Boone Co., Mo., 1st Mar. 1848, age 45. Member of Christian Church 20 years. Left husband and nine children. She also left an aged mother ("sister DUNCAN") and an only sister ("sister BARR"). Her son and only brother were absent. Reported by R. M, Allen, (1848, p 558) JOHNSON, Elder Jefferson H,, of Highland, Jackson Co,, Mo., died 20 July 1850, at "Monogau" Springs, Mo. Born 28 Jan in Monroe Co., Ky. Became a preacher at age 19. Survived by wife and three children. (1850, p 479) JOHNSON, John I., died yesterday, the 18tb,a.t the residence of Bro. Thomas C. Bledsoe. He left Cincinnati at the close of the convention in October for Missouri, intending to cover the State to its western shore. Arrived in the city 23 Nov. This information in letter dated 19 Dec from Lexington, Mo. (1857, P 179) KELLEY, John, our much esteemed brother, died 23rd May near his residence in Leavenworth Co., Kansas Terr. While putting a rider on his fence, it fell and killed him instantly. He was born in Pulaski Co., Ky., 27 Apr Moved to Mo. in 1833= He was a member of the Christian Church for many years and loved by all who knew him. Left wife and five children. A member of Stranger Creek Church. (i860, p 420) Departed this life 11 Oct. last, at her residence in Boone Co., Mo., Drusilla LEE, well known to us as Drusilla CARTER while living in Pennsylvania, having been on our list of subscribers from the beginning of the Christian Baptist until her removal with her husband to Missouri. She left her husband and a son, Carter. (1846, p 60) LENOIR, Walter R., died 15 Oct. 1843, age 57. He came here (Boone Co.) from North Carolina about nine years ago. Soon afterwards, he and his wife and all their children of mature age joined the church. (1845, p 573) McBRIDE, Thomas Crawford, died at his residence in Yamhill Co., Oregon, 29 Apr. 1857, age 80 years, 3 months. Born in Virginia in Emigrated to Oregon from Mo. in 1847, First a Baptist preacher, and then joined the Christian Church, (1857, P 599) McCOY, Isaac, of Kansas, Mo,, youngest son of the late Isaac McCoy, the Apostle to the Indians, died a few days ago of cholera. Date not given, (1849, p 297)

Had been a member of the Baptist Church nearly 70 years. (1860, p 119) MASON, Elizabeth B., wife of Peter Mason, dec'd., died 30 June 1851 age 65, of cholera. She was raised and educated in Ky. In 1829 came to Mo. with husband. Left family of children and grandchildren. (Sept. 1851) MOSELY, Eliza B., wife of James Mosley, born in Kentucky, : 12 Apr 1798; came to Mo. in 1848; died 19 May Notice sent from Callaway Co,, Mo. (1850, p 479) MURRAY, Adam, died at his residence near Trenton, Grundy Co., Mo., 15 Oct. 1845, in his 65^ year. One of the first settlers of Howard Co., Mo., where he lived until a few years ago. (1857, P 54) OFFICER, Robert, died in Clay Co., Mo,, Feb, 8th, Left a wife. (1847, p 240) PATTON, Elder J. S., died in St. Louis, Mo., 25 Aug He had preached in many parts of Illinois and Mo. (1853, P 57) PITTMAN, Williamson, of Palmyra, Mo., died 3 July 1853, age 64. (1853, P 597) PREWITT, Lucy E., wife of Dr Robert C c Prewitt of Louisville, Mo., died 17 Apr Born 26 June 1835 and baptized in March 1855= (1859, P 360) RADFORD, John B,, of Greenton, Mo.,, was accidentally killed a few days ago by a log rolling on him. He left a family. (Date not given, but it was probably in May.) (1843, p 238) REDD, John, Sr., died in Mo. 10 Sept in his 76th year. He was born in Virginia; at an early age to Woodford Co., Ky., and in the fall of 1834 to Mo. (Doesn't give place in Mo.) (1852, p 118) REEDS, Gabriel, died 2 May 1855, at his residence in Lincoln Co,, Mo,, aged about 68. Native of Lincoln Co., Ky. To Missouri in Left a large family, (1855, P 418) RODGERS, Charles, age 57, son of John and Mary Rodgers, died at his residence near Paynesville, Pike Co., Mo. On 26 Sept. 1855, their daughter Eliza was taken from them. A few days afterwards, their son Charles was taken; and on 26 Oct., their daughter, Mary Ann, age 27 years, was taken. John arrived home but a few days before the last death, and now is the only child of John and Mary Rodgers. (1855, P 59) -i-

She was the daughter of Judge WILLIAMS of Knoxville, Tenn., and became a resident of Saline Co., Mo. soon after her first marriage to the late Dr. MITCHELLo Report was from T. II Allen who stated he had seen the death notice in a Kentucky paper. (1849, p 297) A note from Boone Co., Mo., dated 18 Oct. 1845, and signed T.M A,, reported the following three deaths: SIDENOR, Martin, of Monroe Co., died 6 Sept He was a preacher and was baptized in Fayette Co., Ky., 3 Sept A few weeks later, an elder brother, John Sidenor of the same county, died, leaving a widow and children. He was a worthy member of the church at Clinton. (1843, p 575) SMART, Mrs. Matilda, late of Callaway Co., Mo., died 10 Apr In 1855 from Kentucky to Mo. In 1859 she was left a widow with two sons and two daughters. (1852,p 555) SMITH, John P., of Hannibal, Mo. "From his son-in-law in this place, I have obtained a few facts of his early history. Born in Culpeper Co., Va,, 2 Oct. 1793; died 25 Mar From Virginia, he moved to Greene Co., Ky., where he was a member of the Baptist Church. Became member of Christian Church, Apr Was Elder in Mt. Gilead and Bethel Churches in Ky, After living in Warren Co., Mo., from 1857 to 1854, he moved to Hannibal, Mo. His widow, is the daughter of Father SIMS, late of Nicholasville, Ky. (1859, P 299) STONE, Barton W,, died at Hannibal, Mo. at the residence of his son-in-law, Capt, Samuel BOWEN, 9 Nov, 1844, Mentions a son, Barton Stone, (1844, p 621) THOMPSON, Mary Ann, wife of Harvey Thompson and daughter of Thomas D, PATON of Pike Co,, died in her 20th year, (No date given). Left husband and baby. (1852, p 556) TINSLEY, Mrs. Angelina, wife of Dr, Robert Tinsley of Ridgely, Mo,, died at the residence of her father, Capt, James BERRY of Platte Co,, 17 Aug, 1859, age 29, Survived by husband and two little children, (1860, p 119) TODD, Eliza, wife of H, B, Todd, Pres, of Platte City Female Academy, Platte Co,, died 20 July 1860 in her 47th year, (1860, p 599) Jacob Creath of Missouri notified us that Elder Jeremiah VARDEMAN died Saturday, 28tb May, after an illness of two days. He was a great Baptist preacher, known throughout Kentucky and Missouri. He left a. wife and family. (1842, p 524) VIVION, Flavel, of Lafayette Co., Mo., died 12th May, age 69. He joined Baptist Church in Fayette Co., Ky,, but ten years ago united with this church, (1851, p 420)
