Last Week: Chapter 1 3 Our God is a God of comfort (vs3). He comforts us, so that we can comfort others (vs4). When faced with trials of any kind: Rely on God, not our own strengths (vs9). Trust that he will deliver us (vs10). Pray and give thanks (vs11). We are all united in Christ by God (vs21-22): He anointed us; He sealed us; And He has given us the Holy Spirit (as a guarantee).

Paul s 3rd Missionary Journey 4 Paul refers to several Roman Provinces: Achaia - Southern Greece Macedonia - Northern Greece Asia - Western Turkey On his 3 rd missionary journey, Paul traveled to Macedonia from Asia before going to Achaia. This was a change in his original plans.

2 Cor 2: So I made up my mind that I would not make another painful visit to you. 2 For if I grieve you, who is left to make me glad but you whom I have grieved? 3 I wrote as I did so that when I came I should not be distressed by those who ought to make me rejoice. I had confidence in all of you, that you would all share my joy. 4 For I wrote you out of great distress and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to grieve you but to let you know the depth of my love for you. NIV

Paul s Decision (further explained) 6 Paul chose not to make his visit as planned. He did not want to cause them more pain (vs1-2). It was the church at Corinth who gave him joy (vs3). His letter caused him great distress and anguish of heart and with many tears (vs4). His purpose was not to grieve them, but to let them know the depth of his love for them (vs4).

2 Cor 2: If anyone has caused grief, he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you, to some extent not to put it too severely. 6 The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient for him. 7 Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. 8 I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him. NIV

Forgive the Penitent Brother 8 Paul shift s his focus to one who had sinned (vs5). This most likely was the man who was involved in an immoral relationship from 1Cor. We do not know this for certain, but it seems logical. His punishment has been sufficient (vs6). It would appear that he had repented. But some were reluctant to forgive him. They were apparently not treating him as forgiven. Forgive and comfort him (vs7). Reaffirm their love for him (vs8). How do we know when the discipline is complete? How should we respond to the penitent sinner?

2 Cor 2: The reason I wrote you was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything. 10 If you forgive anyone, I also forgive him. And what I have forgiven if there was anything to forgive I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake, 11 in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes. NIV

Paul s Forgiveness 10 Paul wrote to see if (vs9): They would stand the test; They would be obedient. If they forgive, he would forgive (vs10). Should we forgive in this same way? What is the risk if we do not forgive (vs11)? Satan might outwit us. We are not unaware of Satan s schemes. Luke 17:3-4 If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him. If he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times comes back to you and says, 'I repent,' forgive him.

2 Cor 2: Now when I went to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ and found that the Lord had opened a door for me, 13 I still had no peace of mind, because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I said good-by to them and went on to Macedonia. NIV

Paul at Troas 12 Paul went to Troas (vs12). There was an opportunity there. He had no peace of mind there (vs13). This was because he did not find Titus there. As a consequence he did not stay long (vs13). Why do you think he was looking for Titus?

2 Cor 2: But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him. 15 For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. 16 To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life. And who is equal to such a task? 17 Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit. On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, like men sent from God. NIV

The Aroma of Christ 14 It is God who leads us in Christ (vs14). Through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of Christ (vs14). To God we are the aroma of Christ (vs15). To those being saved, the fragrance of life. To the perishing, the smell of death. Paul & his co-workers did not preach the Word for profit (vs17). They spoke the Word with sincerity (vs17). Who does Paul compare himself to in vs17? ( unlike so many )

Conclusion 15 His letter (1Cor) caused him great distress and anguish of heart and with many tears (vs4). His purpose was not to grieve them, but rather to let them know the depth of his love for them (vs4). Forgive and comfort the sinner when they repent (vs7). Then reaffirm our love for them (vs8). When the church forgives the sinner, we too should forgive (vs10). It is God who leads us in Christ. Through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of Christ (vs14). Paul & his co-workers did not preach the Word for profit. They spoke the Word with sincerity (vs17).
