Tone III. The endings of Tone III. display three different rhythmic structures. Endings j. through iij. have two preparatory beats before a single accent. Since this is the same rhythmic pattern as Tone I. (and also Tone VIII.) the number. is used for this pattern. Endings iv. and v. have one preparatory beat preceding the accent, and are indicated by the number. Ending vj. which has three beats preceeding the accent, like Tone IV. uses the number. Y soul doth mag ni-fy the Lord : and my spi-rit *

40 hath re-joiced in God my Saviour. For he hath re-garded : the lowli-ness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth : all ge-ne-rations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magni-fi- ed me : and ho- ly is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him : throughout all ge-ne-rations. He hath shewed strength with his arm : he hath scatter-ed the proud in the imag-i-nation of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their *

41 seat : and hath ex-alted the humble and meek. He hath fil-led the hungry with good things : and the rich he hath sent empty away. 9 He, remember-ing his mercy, hath holpen his servant Isra- el : as he promis-ed to our forefa thers, Abra-ham, and his seed ev-erfor Glo- ry be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Ho-ly Ghost. As it was in the be-ginning, is now, and ev-er shall be : world without end. Amen. *
