2 WHY SHOULD WE FAST? As believers, we shuld Fast because it is ne f the three fundamental spiritual disciplines accrding t Matthew 6. Fasting helps us t discipline ur sulish man as we purpsefully increase ur devtin time with GOD. As ur sul is made subject, we are psitined t tap int the strength and empwerment needed t vercme barriers. The three spiritual disciplines accrding t Matthew 6:2-3, 5, 6 are: Giving f alms Praying Fasting Nte: scripture is saying WHEN we give, pray, and fast, nt IF we fast. Behld [O Israel], n the day f yur fast [when yu shuld be grieving fr yur sins], yu find prfit in yur business, and [instead f stpping all wrk, as the law implies yu and yur wrkmen shuld d] yu extrt frm yur hired servants a full amunt f labr. 4 [The facts are that] yu fast nly fr strife and debate and t smite with the fist f wickedness. Fasting as yu d tday will nt cause yur vice t be heard n high. 5 Is such a fast as yurs what I have chsen, a day fr a man t humble himself with srrw in his sul? [Is true fasting merely mechanical?] Is it nly t bw dwn his head like a bulrush and t spread sackclth and ashes under him [t indicate a cnditin f heart that he des nt have]? Will yu call this a fast and an acceptable day t the Lrd? 6 [Rather] is nt this the fast that I have chsen: t lse the bnds f wickedness, t und the bands f the yke, t let the ppressed g free, and that yu break every [enslaving] yke? 7 Is it nt t divide yur bread with the hungry and bring the hmeless pr int yur huse--when yu see the naked, that yu cver him, and that yu hide nt yurself frm [the needs f] yur wn flesh and bld? 8 Then shall yur light break frth like the mrning, and yur healing (yur restratin and the pwer f a new life) shall spring frth speedily; yur righteusness (yur rightness, yur justice, and yur right relatinship with Gd) shall g befre yu [cnducting yu t peace and prsperity], and the glry f the Lrd shall be yur rear guard. A Prayer Heavenly Father, thank Yu fr pening the eyes f ur hearts s we may fully grasp the hpe that is nw urs in Christ. We understand that Yu have called us ut f darkness int Yur marvelus light Yu have called us t walk with Yu. May hliness and faithfulness mark ur every steps. Help us t remember that nt nly are we rich in Yu but that Yu see us as Yur prized inheritance. May Yur light shine thrugh ur lives in a way that brings Hnr and Glry t Yur Name.
