The Explorer A Publication Of The Kansas Knights of Columbus VOL. 22 NO. 1 January 2018 STATE DEPUTY S MESSAGE Happy New Year. As we begin the second half of or fraternal year, we focus our attention on membership recruitment and retention. After reviewing the major degree schedule, I am pleased with the number of scheduled degrees. However, some areas have yet to schedule a major degree. State Membership Director John Schulz will be working with District Deputies to make sure all areas of the state are covered. Let s take advantage of those scheduled and commit ourselves to make all our degrees successful. Our membership campaign is Become the Cornerstone When we participate in our programs, when we recruit new members, when we help each other or those with special needs, we live up to our membership theme. Let s build up our membership by recruiting every eligible Catholic man and invite him to join with us in making our world a better place to live. The more members we recruit, the more we will be able to accomplish. Remember that January, February, March and April have always been our best recruiting months. Your council goal should be to be recognized as a Star Council or better a Sunflower Award for Excellence. By meeting your goals for membership, programming and insurance, you will insure the growth and success of our Order. If you haven t started recruiting new members, the time to start is now. Let s reach our goal of 1400 new members. Our goals cannot be met unless we put our plans into action. When recruiting new members, we must get them active. The Shining Armor program can help, but only if you implement it. To reduce suspensions, your council must have programs that reflect the needs of our membership. As our Order grows, we must prepare and continue to change to meet the challenges that lie ahead. As we progress in this new year of 2018, please remember to be charitable in your works, united in your programming and recruitment efforts and fraternal toward your brother knights, Vivat Jesus, Vincent P. STATE CHAPLIN S MESSAGE The most Reverend Dan Gardner, State Chaplin Pumping Gas Recently, as I was pumping gas into my car, my thoughts drifted off to a quick conversation with a former parishioner. This took place in time frame. This conversation took place also at a gas station. He was sharing his idea that he imagined television screens on the gas pumps for people to watch. I thought he was crazy. Who would watch a TV show while pumping gas? There wasn t enough time. What a waste! Now, why did that conversation come to mind? There I was, pumping gas, and watching an advertisement on a screen on the gas pump. OMG, his idea came true! I ve got to look him up someday to see if this really was his invention! Ideas are interesting things, and some of them come to fruition, for good or for bad. Certainly, it was a great idea when Fr. McGivney called some men together, shared his idea for a fraternal organization to assist widows and orphans, and the Knights of Columbus was born. His idea has grown through the years which now include such as the following: prosthetics for those injured from an earthquake, in several countries wheelchairs are provided for those who need them, Special Olympics support, food for families, sonogram machines, coats for kids, clean drinking water, disaster relief, supporting refugees from war torn countries. A great idea generates more great ideas. Here s another great idea. Gather a few good men, teach them, form them, and send them out to do the same. From where does that idea come? Jesus and his apostles, of course! They started off small, just their Jewish brothers and sisters, then eventually Jesus sent them out to the Gentiles. After all, he did tell them to go to the ends of the earth with the good news. That idea has yet to be fully realized. With this new year, let us revisit old ideas, re-evaluate them, tweak them, and go forth to do what our Lord has asked us to do. Fr. McGivney and the first Knights were just trying to do the work of Jesus. Let s do the same. There will always be some ministry for us to do, and we may not yet know what that is, but in the meantime, do something! Eventually our Lord will reveal to us what is possible, but we must be open, courageous, adventurous, and creative. Let us look around and read the signs of the times. What can we do electronically? (are you not receiving this through the internet?) Is there some old-fashioned practice we can bring back? (written letters to others?) If something doesn t work the first time around, try it again later. Above all, and first, pray. Pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Trust that that idea which comes to mind, as odd as it may seem, but be just the key to bring someone back to Jesus! Pray, pray, pray! STATE MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR S MESSAGE As the calendar turns to a new page and we start off with a fresh new year, it s time for Councils to get the recruiting blood pumping. We have many Councils throughout the state that have not brought in any members yet this year. We need to jump start our efforts and get active in recruiting. We must continue to grow and reignite our Councils to Become the Cornerstone of the Catholic Church in Kansas. The Supreme Council has instituted some incentives for the remainder of the year. If a Council who has not recruited a member, yet this fraternal year does so between now and February 28, five Council Officers will receive a copy of the marvelous picture of the Holy Family that has been touring the state. If the Council has recruited a member this year, first I saw way to go! Secondly, the Grand Knight will re-

ceive a copy of the Holy Family picture if a new member is brought in between December 1 and February 28. In addition, for each individual recruiter listed as the proposer on the Form 100 of a new or reactivated member, their name will go into a hat and Supreme will draw 10 names and award those proposers and their wives a trip to the World Meeting of Families to take place in Dublin, Ireland in August People from Kansas do win these things. It has happened in the last few years a couple of times. Want to get your named included in that drawing? Make sure to be a proposer. Men, if we are to Become the Cornerstone of the Catholic Church in Kansas, we must recruit and start now. Be talking to your RCIA candidates. Talk to your 18+ year old sons. Ask that guy at church you see there often but don t know his name. We must get out there and ask. Now is the time to act and Become that Cornerstone. John W. Schulz State Membership Director STATE PROGRAM DIRECTOR S MESSAGE As the new year arrives we should refocus on ways to live our lives as men of faith. This can be done personally but also with our brother knights. I want to highly encourage ALL councils to pursue increasing council activity in the Building the Domestic Church initiative. These programs are designed to assist Knights and their families who struggle through daily life with sin. Families who face doubts, fears and uncertainties. St. Paul reminds us that families can overcome such struggles if together they embrace the new mode of life found in Christ. Just like the families in the New Testament, we as modern families are called to welcome the presence of God into our homes through common prayer and increased family devotion. In this manner, families become the domestic churches they are meant to be. We as Knights are the leaders of our families and must lead by example. We must actively work towards living our lives as Catholic men of faith. A great place to start is to obtain and read one of the Building the Domestic Church program books called Into the Breach. It was written by the Most Reverend Bishop Olmsted, Bishop of Phoenix. I was intrigued to read this book as for a short time Bishop Olmsted led the Wichita Diocese before heading to Arizona. I believed that hearing more from him would be beneficial, and it was! You will find that the knowledge this book contains applies to many of the programs under the Building the Domestic Church while Strengthening the Parish. For the readers digest version the book explores the battle we fight as Christian men in today s world. It shares daily, weekly and monthly suggestions to become a stronger Catholic man for yourself, your family and parish community. I would highly suggest ordering enough copies of this book to allow every new Knight in your council the opportunity to read this short but very informative book. This book will serve as a guide as to how we can proceed living as men of faith. With that same goal in mind I hope that by now you have all heard of the Christian Refugee Relief Fund. The KofC Christian Refugee Relief fund aids those in Iraq, Syria, and the surrounding region who are suffering from religious persecution. The number of Christians in Iraq has declined by as much as 90 percent over the last several years, from 1.5 million before 2003, to about 200,000 today. The number of Christians in Syria has declined by as much as 70 percent. These people are being unjustly punished because of their religion. ISIS has executed thousands of Christians by barbaric methods, including crucifixion and beheading. Also, they have engaged in mass deportations of Christians from their ancestral homelands. Sadly, both Iraq and Syria ranked in the top ten countries for extent and degree of persecution of Christians according to the 2017 World Watch List. This amount of religious persecution is terrible but a horrible reality. We as Knights must do all that we can to help our fellow Christians. Take a moment to reflect on the past month of the Christmas season. We have the privilege of attending mass and openly practicing our faith every day. We can pray and praise our Lord whenever and wherever we chose. Many of these persecuted Christians have had their freedoms, homes, and even their lives stolen from them. As tragic as all that is, did you know that since 2014 the Relief Fund has committed more than $17 million to support Christians in need? This is amazing! The Knights of Columbus are actively raising money to help fellow Christians. These funds will provide them with care and supplies for medical clinics, food programs, rebuilding of towns, housing, and other necessities. They are also used for assisting with religious and educational programs. This provides these Christians with the necessities they need but also access to knowledge and practicing their faith. We as Knights must encourage all our councils to brainstorm ways as to how your council can aid the Relief Fund. Every little bit helps, help the KofC fight for the rights of persecuted Christians. A couple reminders for our Grand Knights Please Don t Forget Star Council Report Requirements! The Annual Survey of Fraternal Activities (Form # 1728) is one of those requirements. Although the deadline for receipt of this form at Supreme Council is January 31, it would be of great assistance to have it there by January 15. This will eliminate the need for follow up phone calls at the last minute. Please remember that while you send the original to supreme DO NOT forget to send a copy to our State Deputy. This report form can be found on the Supreme website and the Kansas K of C web site. The information required by the form assists Supreme in providing documentation to retain our non-profit status, therefore is VERY important. Lastly your council s scrapbook(s) in one or all six programming areas should be well under way. This is a year-long process, not something thrown together right before the State Convention. Be sure your Directors and Chairmen are working on this. The deadline to submit is April 1. Thank you and God Bless. CHURCH ACTIVITIES Vocation Poster Contest Vocations Director Gary Wondra encourages every council to engage the youth in their parish by participating in the Vocations Poster Contest. This year s theme is: Answering God s Call. Councils should hold their contest in January or February. The winning council poster in each grade level must be received by your District Deputy no later than March 15th. Additional guidelines are available in the Pro-

gram and Membership Guide. These guidelines must be followed to prevent a poster from being disqualified. Adopt a Seminarian Church Activities Director and Vocations Chairman Gary Wondra reports that 150 councils and 24 assemblies have reported pledges of $146, We are off to a GREAT start but there are still many councils that have not submitted their pledge cards. If your council has not submitted a seminarian pledge, please contact Gary to get the names of seminarians that still need support. All councils are asked to fulfill their pledges to their seminarians as soon as possible. Councils should encourage their seminarians with cards, letters, s, care packages and phone calls. Gary reminds all councils to continue praying for all seminarians. Building the Domestic Church All councils are reminded that four activities on you Columbian Award Application must be Building the Domestic Church activities. Is your council fulfilling all the needs of your local parish? Is the Knights of Columbus vibrant and visible in your local parish? Additional information on this initiative may be found on the Supreme Website: Religious Education Religious Education Fund Raffle Ticket sales were a great success again this year. Religious Education Fund Raising Chairman Steve Abels reports all the tickets were sold. The Raffle drawing was held at the Mid-Year District Deputy meeting on December 2 and a list of winners was sent to all Grand Knights. A Special Thanks to all Brother Knights for their hard work in selling the tickets. Because of this great effort, over $90,000 was dispersed for Catholic Education in Kansas this year. YOUTH ACTIVITIES Free Throw Contest All youth ages 9 to 14 years old are invited to participate in the free throw contest again this year. Please refer to the rules in your packet. The winners from your council will compete in the District, Regional and State Contest. Council Free Throw Contests should be held during the month of January. District Contests will be held the first two weeks of February. Be sure the Official Contest Rules from Supreme are followed to the letter with no exceptions. Meet with your judges and scorers ahead of time to insure everyone is well prepared. Immediately after the contest, complete the Council Winner Free Throw Report Advancing to District, provided to you at your District Meeting, and forward it to your District Deputy. At the same time, be sure to file the Form FT-1 participation report with Supreme and our State Deputy by January 31. It is found on the Kansas K of C web site, or In the past three years, six of our statewide winners have also won the international contest. Regional Free Throw Contest notes: District Deputies please see the flyer given at the Mid December meeting of all Regional locations. Salina Kansas. State Contest Chairman is Doug Mergen (demergen@cox.net) Substance Abuse Poster Contest Grand Knights, be sure your Substance Abuse Poster Contest is completed by the end of January, so they can be judged the first week of February and the winning posters sent to your District Deputy by February 15th. Essay Contest Encourage all 8th grade through 12th grade students to enter the Essay contest. The topic is, The Responsibility of the Catholic Citizen in a Free Society Submit the entries to Youth Director Bob Duffin by March 1. FAMILY ACTIVITIES Family Life Congratulations to every council who has been selecting a Family of the Month. We anticipate making many more Rosaries for councils completing filling each quarter with 3 families of the month. It s time to begin thinking of who your council may want to select as the Family of the Year. In doing so, you may want to consider the stronger members of your council, parish, and community. Remember, when selecting the Family of the Year, the husband must be a member of the Knights of Columbus. If he is not a member, this would be a great opportunity to hold a first degree to bring him into our Order. Once the application has been completed request the family to review the Family of the Year form, and add to it. Make sure the forms are completed and sent to your district deputy no later than March 10. Your district deputy has a short period of time to make his selection before making sure the paperwork is sent to the Diocesan judge for your area. If you are late with your paperwork, your council family won t be judged, and may have lost an opportunity to be the State Family of the Year. The State Family of the Year and Diocesan winners will be recognized at the Kansas State Convention, Overland Park, KS. COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES Commitment to Humanities Tootsie Roll Update Has your council filed its Tootsie Roll Report? It was due December 15. If not, please file it immediately. The original hard copy, along with the check from your fundraiser needs to be sent to State Treasurer Mike Grothoff. The yellow copy goes to Commitment to Humanities Chairman Barney Wolters. Electronically mailed copy of the report to Barney is also acceptable. The Special Olympics Basketball Tournament is scheduled for March 16 and 17, 2018 and on March 23 and 24, 2018 in Topeka. Anyone interested in volunteering to help with the event should contact Barney Wolters. Please send Barney a copy of your Form 4584 Partnership Profile with Special Olympics. Remember the due date for this form as shown on preceding Calendar of Events. Pennies from Heaven Pennies from Heaven Chairman Bruce Luehring would like to thank all the councils and individuals that have donated to the hurricane disaster relief this year. These donations totaled over $36,000 and will be credited to the councils Pennies from Heaven account. All councils should be looking forward to the State Convention to be held in Overland Park in May. A highlight of the convention is always the Pennies

from Heaven live auction held on Saturday night at the convention. Bruce is looking for nice donated items for the Country Store and Pennies from Heaven Live and Silent Auctions. If you have a member who is talented in woodworking or crafts items, encourage them to make an item to donate. The sale price of these items will be credited to your Council s Pennies from Heaven donation. Please contact Bruce as soon as possible so he can plan accordingly. If you can, write a brief description about it and it to pennies@kansas-kofc.org. There will also be some great items for the Pennies from Heaven raffle. Culture of Life Update: The month of January is when councils are called on to host baby showers in their parishes. Pregnancy Crisis Centers are always in need of assistance for mothers and their babies. As Knights, we value all life and wish to assist these centers with their service mission. It is a good idea to start by asking your local Pregnancy Crisis Center what items they need. From past years we have learned that some of the most requested items are: Baby toiletries, baby clothing and blankets either new or gently used, disposable diapers and baby wipes. Your council may want to publish this list and other items requested by the PCC in your newsletters and parish bulletin Also keep in mind if the PCC has an ultrasound machine, then financial donations may be needed. They use these funds for maintenance of the machine along with continuing education for the sonogram technicians. All activities that councils perform in support of the Culture of Life can and should be included on the Culture of Life form. Councils are encouraged to submit a scrapbook documenting their Culture of Life Activates. The winner of the scrapbook contest will be honored at the State Convention. The Culture of Life Forms and scrapbooks are BOTH due April 1, Please mark that on your calendar! Due to the generosity of your councils, we have placed an ultrasound machine in Lawrence, Junction City and are now working to place another machine in Garden City. Your assistance with the Ultrasound Initiative allows us provide support to the unborn children here in the state of Kansas. Thank you so much to all the District Deputies and their wives for their donations to our annual baby shower during the Midyear Meeting. All the items were divided into 4 large bags and sent to PCC s in the 3 Diocese and Archdiocese of Kansas. The monetary donations were attributed to the Ultrasound Initiative in Kansas to assist with the ultrasound machine for Garden City. Don t forget that if your council hosted the Silver Rose, be sure to record it on your Fraternal Survey (due on January 31, 2018). Here are some suggested Culture of Life action steps and activities: 1. Have an active Culture of Life chair couple for your council. 2. Participation in the Silver Rose Program 3. Culture of Life Baby Shower or Baby Bottle Campaign programs. 4. Placing Culture of Life articles in you Knights newsletters and church bulletins. 5. Leading rosaries for the Culture of Life From conception to natural death. 6. Host fundraisers to support the Ultrasound Initiative and/or a pregnancy crisis center. 7. Attending the March for Life Rally in Topeka Kansas on Monday, January 22, Check the Kansas State web site for more information regarding the schedule of this event. Hope to see you there! COUNCIL ACTIVITIES Athletic Events Council Activities The 74th Annual Knights of Columbus Bowling Tournament will be held at Royal Crest Lanes in Lawrence and hosted by the councils of District 18. The dates of the tournament are February 17-18, February and March 3-4. All Brother Knights are encouraged to participate. You need not be a league bowler to participate. All that is required to participate is a current Knights of Columbus membership card. For more information and to register for the event, visit the Kansas State website at Any council interested in submitting a bid to host the 75th annual tournament must make their submission in writing to Randy Testa Council Activities Director, before January 21, The date for the Annual Sporting Clay Tournament in 2018 has not yet been finalized. It will be confirmed by January 15 please see website for further information. If you are interested in participating keep alert to new information in the coming weeks. Fraternal Alex Neises would like to thank all councils who have submitted your monthly Knight to be honored. I know many councils take part in this effort but many more are not taking up this cause. Please remember to let your Knights know that their efforts of dedication and commitment to the order are appreciated. Also at a time when dues are being collected please take the extra time to contact every knight in your Council. Inquire about how they are doing, how their families are doing and invite them to a meeting or function. Publicity Alex Neises would like to remind everyone to follow the Kansas Knights on He also encourages all councils to look at the Knights of Columbus supreme site for the Publicity and Public Relations Guide. It can be found at: We all are called to use this guide to learn how to share the great work we do with church and community which is our best kept secret which we need to share with others. By sharing our great works, it has been shown to increase the number of new men who can join the order and help us continue our work for others. I believe you will find this tool useful in helping us share the word with all. Website Update Webmaster Is your council receiving messages from the State Council? The State Council sends s concerning sickness or death notices of current and past state personnel, important messages from the Supreme Council, which includes Webinar and Training opportunities for officers and members, pending legislative issues and important messages from the Bishops of Kansas. addresses are never sold or shared, and messages are only sent with the approval of the State Deputy. If your Grand Knight does not wish to share his personal account with the State Council, perhaps your council could consider creating a council address using one of the many free services available today. Therefore, when the Grand Knight changes there is no need to notify the

State Council of an address change. An example of this type of could be kofc and the council number like Please contact Doug Wietharn at if you have any questions. History and Centennial Book State Historian, Jim Pritchard would like to remind all Councils and Assemblies that have not updated their history to do so as soon as possible. Out of 258 councils, only 83 have their history up-to-date and 38 Councils just need one year. Out of the 55 assemblies, 16 are up-to-date. These numbers are as of December 13. There are several councils and assemblies requesting information, if your history is on file, this information is available to you quickly. Please don't delay any longer, do it now before it slips your mind. The due date is July 1st, but they can be sent any time. There are still several copies of the Fraternalism and Leadership, The Second Fifty Years of the Knights of Columbus history books to sell, contact Jim if you would like to purchase any, the order form is on page 88 in the official directory or call Jim.
