There were many flags in the Cook County area, and some appeared to be swimming in the lake. On behalf of the Illinois State Council Sandy congratulated Romayne Badyniak of her being the Ladies Auxiliary Chairperson for the past 6 years. Pat and Sandy presented Romayne with flowers and a personal gift. Romayne wished Sandy good luck in the upcoming year. Romayne said she really enjoyed her 6 years of service. 3 PAGE 3 VOLUME 2 ISSUE 3 #1704 NEWTON Congratulations to President Debra Matson on forming an auxiliary in one evening. The installation will be in June. #2191 BATAVIA LADIES OF THE KNIGHT Thank you to all the ladies for helping with the Easter Egg Hunt and Potluck Dinner. It was exhausting, but the 20 + children had a wonderful time hunting for their eggs and using their creative talents toward their take-home Easter crafts. All in all it was a huge success-plus the variety of dishes for the potluck were outstanding and delicious. What a feast! We can t take a break yet, however. the first Friday and Saturday in May will be the Citywide Garage Sale in Batavia. The Knights will be providing tax receipts for your donations, so please keep track of items you would like to include on these forms. All unsold items will be given to the Barn Sale for St. Peter s or another local charity. Please contact me if you have any consignment items-over $50 in value-to discuss options. If you have any larger pieces of furniture or items over 50 lbs., we will be setting up a pick-up or drop off date within a week of the sale. Check the website for Ladies of the Knight for future volunteers to assist our Knight of Columbus. Patti Neri, Coordinator #5918 ROBERT P. CONNELLY LISLE/WOODRIDGE The Ladies Auxiliary held a fundraiser on April 19, 2010 at Giovans Restaurant in Crest Hill, IL. Giovans donated one of his party rooms so that the ladies could host an event called Ladies Night Out. The event consisted of 19 vendors that came out and sold their merchandise with a percent of their profits donated back to the Auxiliary. Admission to the event was $5 and with that you received a $5 coupon for Giovans. It was a win win! Some of the 19 vendors were: Shaklee, Tastefully Simple, Pampered Chef, Miche bags, Partylite, Avon, and several others. Flyers were posted locally besides advertising in our church bulletins. The Ladies Auxiliary earned $600 from this fundraiser and everyone had a great time. Nancy Stock, Past President #6710 OF THE K OF C WARRENVILLE CHARLIE Thank you so much for all you have done for us. A huge thank you from our family for your generous donations for our son Charlie who is waiting for a kidney transplant. Your generosity and thoughtfulness mean so much to us in this difficult time. We can t thank you enough for all you have done. The Fahrenwald Family #7804 GODFREY The Godfrey K of C Auxiliary was started in 1988 by Edna Sommars and Mary Kaizer. We continue to meet on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. We have 28 members was a very active year. Our activities centered on support for our parish, St. Ambrose, and our Council. For the parish, we conducted donut Sundays, sold pies at the parish Fall Apple Fest, and held a Christmas party for special kids. For the Council, we continue to clean roadways that surround the K of C Club building, and our annual Easter Egg Hunt is a fun day for the members families. We start our fundraising activities for the year with our braided bread and cookie dough sales campaign. Next, we join the Council in their Lenten Fish Fries by selling desserts. We continued our charitable support activities with donations to the parish St. Vincent DePaul Society, the Diocese Priest Sunday, a gift basket to the parish Apple Fest, support of the parish Easter Egg Hunt, the parish Christmas Giving tree, financial aid to a Seminarian, and a donation to our priest, Fr. Steve for his Silver Jubilee. In support of the community, donations were made to the local Crisis Food Center, Junior Achievement, and we continued our support of a family in the Philippines through CFCA. Joan Gulotta, President
4 PAGE 4 V O LU M E 2 I S S U E 3 #8002 WINFIELD FR. MICHAEL J. MCGIVNEY During May, the Ladies Auxiliary of Fr. McGivney #8002 invited people from all over the Chicago-land to help make quilt tops for wounded veterans at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Winfield. Together the volunteers made 12 quilt tops over 9 hours. The Knights of Columbus Fr. McGivney Council provided beverages, excellent support and electric generators that proved important as irons have a huge electrical draw. Various groups have donated a combined total of $850, that will be used to buy supplies that will allow volunteer quilters to finish those 12 quilt tops and make them into Quilts of Valor for Chicago area wounded vets. Those donors include Romeo Blanchette Assembly, the Knights of Columbus at St. Petronille in Glen Ellyn, and at St. John the Baptist in Winfield, the Ladies Auxiliary of St. Irene s Council # 6710 in Warrrenville, and the Wheaton Veterans of Foreign Wars have all generously donated funds to help QOVF continue to give local wounded vets a quilt of their own. Since this war began, many of America Sons and Daughter s have put themselves in harm s way. In Iraq, we ve lost 4, 380 service members. In Afghanistan, we ve lost over 1000, with far too many wounded in both regions. Quilts of Valor Foundation, has given 26, 125 quilts to wounded members of the US Military. QOVF is a grass-roots organization of quilters who support the men and women of the armed forces by making war-time quilts for the wounded veterans. The goal is not a charitable offering, it is a quilt made to honor our War Wounded. These quilts are a beautifully-made wartime quilt...a tangible way to say thank you for your bravery and sacrifice. Some call it a Granny Purple Heart. In short, a quilt of Valor is a wartime quilt made by wartime quilters in support of our brave young men and women who protect our country and freedom. All over this country and even other parts of the world quilters make quilt tops (the face of the quilt). Every step of making a quilt is meticulous and just like when chefs prepare a beloved recipe, quilters strive to use the finest ingredients possible. Because Quilts of Valor is about saying thank you for giving your best, we work to give our best, the finest soft all cotton fabrics are selected and made into quilt tops. Various volunteer quilters with longarm sewing machines draw designs into the quilt with the thread. To do this, the quilters need good thread, batting (the fluff in the middle that insulates the quilt), and a highquality backing fabric to make the quilt sandwich. Because we don t want scratchy fabric against the wounds of our brave veterans, this gets costly. Next, volunteers attach a binding to the quilt (a finished edge to the quilt is very important, it keeps it from wearing out and gives a nice appearance), then attach a label that says the names of all people who contributed or the name of their organization. There are two more steps, someone makes a pillow case to contain the quilt, allowing for a nice presentation. These quilts go to the wounded and those affected by the hardship of wars, particularly those suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. Within a week after the horrible shooting at Fort Hood in Texas, quilters all over the country sent enough quilts to present to all those directly impacted by the heinous attack. On the local front, Great Lakes Naval Air Station offers a program to help the wounded service members adapt to their new lives. On a quarterly basis these brave men and women are brought to the base and all their training culminates in a banquet where they are presented with their Quilt of Valor. It is a very emotional moment for these vets, they are astonished that strangers cared enough to make something just for them. They absolutely love them. This June, Great Lakes needs 90 quilts for this ceremony. There are quilters all over the area working to fill this need. By hosting the sew-in at St. John s this past May, the Ladies Auxiliary helped to meet and exceed the need. Donna Kelley, Chancellor
