The book of Hebrews presents the excellence of Christianity over Judaism. Christ is the substance of man's born again life. This book shows the immeasurable superiority of Christ over the prophets, angels, Moses, Joshua, and Aaron. In the Lord Jesus, Christians have the substance and reality of the Christ-purchased relationship between God and man, which Judaism contained only types and shadows. The new covenant is better and greater as compared to the old covenant which was but a shadow of that to come. Hebrews 1 - Our Superior Savior Christ totally reveals God's will, desire, and word. He is not just a messenger, but He is the Message (the Word). He is a Son equal with the Father and Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is the Savior, the Creator, and the Maintainer of His creation. Christ: God's Final and Supreme Messenger 1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by [his] Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; God's nature and desires are now revealed in the earthly appearance of Jesus through His compassion and actions. God speaks to us with one authentic voice which is Christ. A great change has been made from the old ways to the new way of fellowship with God. Christ is all in all to all men at all times. 3 Who being the brightness of [his] glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; The Son was involved with creation and continues to maintain the universe from the right hand of the Father. Almighty power is behind Jesus' words and enforces them. 4 Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. 5 For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? [Psalms 2:7] A son has an legal inheritance from his father. Jesus shares with us as joint heirs. 6 And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him. 7 And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire. [Psalms 104:4] 8 But unto the Son [he saith], Thy throne, O God, [is] for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness [is] the sceptre of thy kingdom. [Psalms 45:8] 9 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, [even] thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. The person and name of Jesus, the Son of God, is above all. [Philippians 2:9-10] 10 And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands: 11 They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; chipmorrow.org page 1 of 26

All that is seen is temporary, the unseen are eternal [2 Corinthians 4:18]. 12 And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail. The Lord was always, is always, and will be always the wonderfully same and dependable. [Hebrews 13:8] 13 But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool? [Psalms 110:1] 14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation? Angels are assigned to serve believers, who are the joint heirs with Jesus. [Romans 8:17] Hebrews 2 - Jesus, Our Elder Brother Jesus is better than angels in position, power and authority. He is our Brother and our Savior, and the only Way of escape from sin and its wages of death. He was sent to join with man (in flesh) so man could join with Him (in spirit). Jesus Christ serves as Priest for the fellowship between God and man. The Author of our Salvation 1 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let [them] slip. Keeping our attention on these great truths prevents our forgetting them. 2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; This gospel message is so great, it should always be on the tip of our tongue. Judgment and rewards will come without fail. 3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard [him]; The gift of salvation is too wonderful and too valuable to ignore or disregard. Salvation by faith was taught by Jesus and by His followers. 4 God also bearing [them] witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will? With salvation, comes the Holy Spirit who will fill, gift, exhort, comfort and edify all of us who ask. [1 Corinthians 12:3, 14:4] 5 For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak. 6 But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him? [Psalms 8:4, 144:3] 7 Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands: God's greatest creation is man for which all of creation was made. [Genesis 1:26] We should humbly accept our place in His family. [Psalms 8:4-6] 8 Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing [that is] not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him. page 2 of 26 chipmorrow.org

Man was given full authority and dominion of the creation. This authority was given to Satan by Adam and taken back from Satan by Jesus. The last submission and defeat of Satan will come at the end of the age. The resurrection of Christ is the event and proof that His brethren can be restored to the original state of relationship with God. 9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man. Both comparison and contrast between man and Christ are presented. Man was made in the image of God to rule but he gave away his dominion. Christ who came in full human form is re-crowned with glory (worth) and honor. The love of God for all man caused Christ to suffer death for all. Jesus is the Example of suffering and triumph, ridicule and reigning, death and resurrection; through which we all may experience to some degree. Made Like unto His Brethren 10 For it became him, for whom [are] all things, and by whom [are] all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. Christ's suffering and death broke our slave-like bondage and made us righteous sons of God. Christ was born to suffer for our benefit and for His glory. Suffering comes to all men who must make the choice to grow or to growl (complain). Perfection (completeness) comes when suffering is conquered by the Spirit within man, as demonstrated in Christ's journey from the cross to the crown. 11 For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified [are] all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren, Christ is the head of the body of which we are all parts. [Ephesians 4:16] The new birth grants man a joint inheritance with Jesus. [Romans 8:17] 12 Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee. Praise is a creation gift God gave to us. [Psalms 22:22] 13 And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me. [Psalms 12:2] 14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; Christ's innocent death and His righteous resurrection destroyed the devil's ruling power over those who believe on Christ. 15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. The fear of death is a potent force in the unsaved life. Deliverance of the captives was a foundation of Jesus' earthly ministry. [Luke 4:18] 16 For verily he took not on [him the nature of] angels; but he took on [him] the seed of Abraham. 17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto [his] brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things [pertaining] to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. Jesus is our great high priest. A priest is an intermediary between God and man, the high priest offered the sacrifice every year for the sins of man. The great high priest offered Himself once and for all mankind. [Hebrews 4:14] 18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted. chipmorrow.org page 3 of 26

Christ was tempted as man is but did not sin. He is able and willing to strengthen us in our times of temptations. Hebrews 3 - Jesus, Superior to Moses Moses was a foreshadow of Christ. The law showed the holiness of God and inability of man to achieve righteousness. Moses brought reality of sin to the Hebrews but Jesus brought the way to righteousness to all mankind. Unbelief (hard-hearted) prevents man's entrance into His rest (provision, protection and fellowship) prepared for man. Worthy of More Glory than Moses 1 Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; Jesus came as an Apostle, an Ambassador, sent from the Father to re-establish the relationship with man. 2 Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses [was faithful] in all his house. Moses was faithful to the office and calling he received from God to bring the covenant of law unto man. 3 For this [man] was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house. God gives some of His glory to whomever He wishes. Jesus, as a man, received more than Moses. 4 For every house is builded by some [man]; but he that built all things [is] God. 5 And Moses verily [was] faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after; Moses' house (his family or the people to whom he was called to serve) was to bring the Israelites out of slavery. Free men can choose whom they obey. 6 But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end. Jesus came to make us sons with a great hope not just free men. Sons have an unconditional relationship with their Father in addition to the friendship and fellowship connection. 7 Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice, [Isaiah 55:3] 8 Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: The Holy Spirit is always teaching us not to harden our hearts toward the nature of God. While they journeyed in the wilderness, the Israelites were not listening or responsive to God or His servant, Moses. 9 When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. The Lord was patient with the children of Israel in the wilderness. 10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in [their] heart; and they have not known my ways. To possess man's heart (motivation, attitude, soul-spirit) is God's greatest desire (His heart). He is always seeking a man after His own heart. [1 Samuel 13:14] 11 So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.) God's rest is a living relationship with Him. God's door is open but man's door is only opened by accepting Jesus's righteousness. Jesus is always knocking at our door [Revelation 3:20] page 4 of 26 chipmorrow.org

12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. Harden Not Your Hearts 13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. We harden our heart toward God when we have unbelief about His word and His promises. Sin's most effective weapon is deception. We give authority and power to sin when we believe its lies. 14 For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end; We become partakers by receiving what is offered to us in Christ. With patience, we hold on to our confidence in His word. [Hebrews 10:35] 15 While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation. 16 For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses. 17 But with whom was he grieved forty years? [was it] not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness? The generation who would not believe to enter the promised land was condemned to die in the wilderness. [Numbers 26:64-65] 18 And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not? 19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief. God's rest is only available for entry and enjoyment by those who believe and trust Him with their whole hearts. Hebrews 4 - Entering His Rest Christ gives the promise of rest which was modeled by God after completing His creation. Entrance is not by man's works. Belief is the only labor man must complete to enter. We are led by the great, high Priest into His rest. We boldly enter His rest and come into Him at the Throne of Grace. The Rest not Received 1 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left [us] of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. This first Let us is a warning to the readers to not miss the promised rest. The literal definition of rest is laying down, abiding; similar to be still. [Psalms 4:4] 2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard [it]. Promises of rest must be received by faith which is given to all men. [Romans 12:3] 3 For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. Unbelievers will not be allowed to enter into the rest of God (a faith relationship with God). [Psalms 95:11] God has always desired and planned for the believing man to rest in Him. [Matthew 11:28] 4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh [day] on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works. Rest comes and is enjoyed when the work is finished. The work is faith believing, as God did rest after creation and man can rest after receiving salvation. In the heaven, Jesus sat down at the right hand of God because as He shouted on the the cross It is finished. chipmorrow.org page 5 of 26

5 And in this [place] again, If they shall enter into my rest. 6 Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief: The rest is still open to those who believe but unavailable to those in unbelief. 7 Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts. A hard heart is a unbelieving heart or mindset. The heart (the intersect of a man's spirit and soul) is a great influence on the soul and body of man. 8 For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. This verse refers to Joshua (Jesus) and the children refusing to enter into the promised land after the evil report of the ten spies. [Numbers 14:3, Deuteronomy 12:9] 9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. This is an eternal rest or abiding in the presence of God available now on earth and forever in heaven. 10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God [did] from his. When the work of salvation is done, we can enter the rest in Jesus without accomplishing any additional works to earn or to keep it. God offers a rest to His people, if they will stop their feeble efforts at dead works toward their self righteousness. The redemptive work was completed by Christ who now rests as He did after creation. Enter Rest by Prayer and Belief 11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. Second Let us is an encouragement to go after the rest (understanding and entering a faith relationship with God) with all diligence and speed. The only labor we have to work is believing the word that Jesus has completed the work of the cross and resurrection for us. The how is by the Word of God (described in the next verse). 12 For the word of God [is] quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and [is] a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. God's word is spoken, written, and embodied in Jesus. The Word spotlights the desires and conflicts of the soul and the spirit. If followed and obeyed, the Word aligns the heart with the renewed mind and reborn spirit. The third part of man, his body, must agree with and follow his reborn spirit and renewed mind (soul). [1 Thessalonians 5:23] 13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things [are] naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. Nothing is hidden from God, Who is our just Judge. 14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast [our] profession. As a priest, Jesus is our mediator to God. As a high priest, He is welcomed into the holy of holies. But Jesus is the great high priest, who brought us into a relationship with God and sat down at the right hand of God, once and for all. The third Let us urges us to be faithful in our confessions and actions. 15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as [we are, yet] without sin. Jesus experienced all soul temptations and the physical feelings as a man, but He did not sin. page 6 of 26 chipmorrow.org

16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. The fourth let us is to demonstrate a confidence in the abundant supply of grace and mercy for us. We can come boldly, without reservation or reluctance even though we know that a King is on the throne because it is a throne of Grace. We can boldly open our hearts, needs, and fears to the One who is full of mercy and grace. Mercy starts the change in us, grace brings the change to perfection. We need mercy to pardon and grace to purify. Mercy brings life, grace brings living. We come boldly not on our self-merit or self-righteousness but because of His promise of help for our needs. Hebrews 5 - Jesus A Priest Forever Jesus Christ is chosen by God to the highest order of priesthood and kingship. He ministers in heaven forever. Christ has established His believers as priests and kings. Our Divinely Appointed High Priest 1 For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things [pertaining] to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins: The high priest was the mediator between God and the people of Israel. 2 Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity. The priest is a man with the same weaknesses and sins as the other men. 3 And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins. The priest must be aware of and offer a payment for his own personal sins and the sins of the people he represents to God. 4 And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as [was] Aaron. A proper high priest must be of Aaron's lineage and appointed by God not a self-assuming position. 5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee. The Father gloried Christ as a Priest and commended Him as a well pleasing Son. [Matthew 3:17] 6 As he saith also in another [place], Thou [art] a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. Melchisedec and Jesus were not priests by inheritance from tribe of Levi or appointed by man. The priest Melchisedec was the King of Righteousness and King of Peace who blessed and received tithes of Abraham. [Genesis 14:18-20] 7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; 8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; Even as the innocent Son of God, He suffered the life and judgment of the world as a sinful man would. But by His resurrection, He conquered sin and death. 9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; Jesus' finished work of the cross, created the way of salvation for all men who will believe. 10 Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec. Jesus is the only Great High Priest unto only One True God for all peoples forever. [Hebrews 7:1-3] Feed on the Word and Grow 11 Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing. This deafness in the immature believer is not of the ear but of the heart in understanding. chipmorrow.org page 7 of 26

12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which [be] the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. Christians must feed themselves and grow in knowledge and understanding of their Father. The diet of Christians should progress from milk to strong meat for their growth and strength. The strong meat is cut into smaller pieces by anointed teachers. Ultimately, Christians should feed themselves on the Word of God to continue to mature. 13 For every one that useth milk [is] unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. Understanding grace and our righteousness by grace is strong meat, which is not able to be received and digested by babes. 14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, [even] those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. Knowledge and understanding of God's word gives us discernment for ourselves and for others to whom we minister. Hebrews 6 - A Warning to Discouraged Believers Believers should build their life on a foundation of faith righteousness. We must keep following, growing, and learning to be led by the Spirit. Our God faithfully sees our progress and continues rewarding and blessing us. Build on the Foundation 1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, This let us encourages us to improve ourselves and grow with faith not dead (empty) activities. Perfection also means completion, so perfect completion should be our goal. 2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. Six foundation principles of Christians are: abandoning faith in works alone, standing in faithrighteousness, understanding the baptisms, anointing by laying on of hands, giving life to the dead, and the sure coming punishment and rewards at the end of the age. [Revelation 20:11] 3 And this will we do, if God permit. These foundation principles will only be accomplished in our hearts with the ever present help of our Teacher, the Holy Spirit. [John 14:26] 4 For [it is] impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, These are the characteristics of very mature and anointed Christians, not newborns. 6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put [him] to an open shame. This impossible renewed repentance equates to rejecting the completed work of the cross and a blasphemy of the Holy Spirit as taught by Jesus. [Matthew 12:31] 7 For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God: 8 But that which beareth thorns and briers [is] rejected, and [is] nigh unto cursing; whose end [is] page 8 of 26 chipmorrow.org

to be burned. Those that reject the grace salvation offered by Jesus are in danger of eternal destruction as a field full of briers is burned. Also the apparent Christians, who resist all attempts of salvation offered them and deny or ignore the love and power of God, will also be judged unworthy and be burned. Jesus said to the bearers of evil fruit, I never knew you: depart from Me. [Matthew 7:23] The Hope Set before Us 9 But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak. All who receive (accept and understand) this letter are beloved and are the bearers of good fruit in their lives and out of their spirits. 10 For God [is] not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. God sees our every work and gift motivated by faith and love. Even done unto the least of these, ye have done unto Me. [Matthew 25:40] 11 And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end: 12 That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. Lazy people are not patience. Inheritance comes to those who are confidently serving and patiently waiting. 13 For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself, Abraham was blessed at his time of willing to give all unto God. 14 Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee. [Genesis 22:17] 15 And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise. Abraham waited in confidence many years for the promise of a son and heirs without number. [Genesis 12:2-3] 16 For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation [is] to them an end of all strife. 17 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed [it] by an oath: 18 That by two immutable things, in which [it was] impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: The hope given to us is the promise of inheritance as sons. The Father gives the inheritance rights to His sons. 19 Which [hope] we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; Hope from God brings security to our souls (thoughts and emotions). Within the veil is the presence of and relationship with God Almighty. 20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, [even] Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. Jesus is an eternal Great High Priest chosen by God not appointed by man. [Hebrews 4:14] chipmorrow.org page 9 of 26

Hebrews 7 A Better High Priest Christ is better than all other high priests. His priesthood was not inherited or elected by man or system. He is a complete, everlasting high priest between God and man. Christ made one perfect sacrifice which is complete forever and for everyone. Christ continues to administer His better testament and covenant to the people as the Great High Priest. A Priesthood Superior to Aaron 1 For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; Melchisedec is the first recorded king and priest. [Genesis 14:18-20] 2 To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; This king and priest unto the most high God is a foreshadow of Christ, our King and great, high Priest, who ministers righteousness and peace. 3 Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually. Jesus, our great high Priest, is likened to Melchisedec not like Aaron. The words without father surely means that the lineage of Melchisdec is unknown. 4 Now consider how great this man [was], unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils. 5 And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham: Even the Levite priests should reverence Melchisedec as did their father Abraham. 6 But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises. Our worship of the Lord is received, multiplied, and returned to us as blessings and promises. 7 And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better. Melchisedec, the better, blessed Abraham, the lessor. Jesus, the far better, blesses the believer, the far lessor. 8 And here men that die receive tithes; but there he [receiveth them], of whom it is witnessed that he liveth. 9 And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham. 10 For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him. Abraham gave honor and tithes to Melchisedec for himself and his descendants. Our Everlasting and All Sufficient Intercessor 11 If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need [was there] that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron? 12 For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law. The law only allowed the descendants of Aaron (of the tribe of Levi) to be priests. 13 For he of whom these things are spoken pertaineth to another tribe, of which no man gave attendance at the altar. page 10 of 26 chipmorrow.org

14 For [it is] evident that our Lord sprang out of Judah; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood. The question is asked, How can Jesus, born of the tribe of Judah, be a priest? 15 And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest, Melchiedec was without known lineage but yet a priest of men to God. 16 Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life. Jesus Christ is not the Great High Priest by the Levitical law, but by His eternal life. 17 For he testifieth, Thou [art] a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. Jesus Christ is our Great High Priest by the appointment of God not of the law as Melchiedec was a priest not by the law. 18 For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof. 19 For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope [did]; by the which we draw nigh unto God. Completely following the law never brought sinless perfection to the priests or the people. Jesus, by His sacrifice, brought us a hope and a promise that we can become righteous as He is. 20 And inasmuch as not without an oath [he was made priest]: 21 (For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, The Lord sware and will not repent, Thou [art] a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:) [Psalm 110:4] 22 By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament. Jesus acts as His own executor of His last will and testament. He insures grace and hope are distributed according to His will. This word surety holds the meaning of a co-signer who guarantees a loan to the creditor for another person. Testament is the same word which is translated covenant in other places in Hebrews. So a testament is a covenant that extends after death of the guarantor. 23 And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death: 24 But this [man], because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. Jesus unlike any of the priests is eternally alive, at one with the Trinity, and continually ministering to the believers. 25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. Salvation by Christ is great and powerful enough to eliminate all man's sin for all time. The salvation of man was the purpose God sent Christ into the world. Christ forever lives being our advocate and interceding for us before the righteous judgment throne of God. 26 For such an high priest became us, [who is] holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; Jesus is the perfect Priest, holy without sin and everlasting. 27 Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself. The perfect sacrifice of Jesus for sinners and not for Himself, was forever accepted by the Father and need not be repeated. chipmorrow.org page 11 of 26

28 For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, [maketh] the Son, who is consecrated for evermore. Hebrews 8 A New Better Covenant Christ is a better Priest ministering a better covenant with better promises: His law is in our minds and hearts and He is our God, we are His people. We shall know Him with an intimate relationship. He is merciful to our unrighteousness, eliminating and forgetting our forgiven sins. This new covenant supersedes the old covenant between God and man. The Mediator of the New Covenant 1 Now of the things which we have spoken [this is] the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; The position of Jesus at the Father's right hand is His place of authority, power, and intersession. The great high priest has completed His work and is seated in authority. 2 A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man. The tabernacle made by Moses was only a shadow and symbol of the true tabernacle which is in heaven created by God. 3 For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore [it is] of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer. Jesus like a high priest comes with His offering and sacrifice, one time for all men and for all time. Christ brings His life as a perfect, sinless, spotless, innocent Lamb for sacrifice. 4 For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law: Jesus is a priest or minister of grace of God not a priest according to the laws previously given by God to man. 5 Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, [that] thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount. The tabernacle and priesthood on earth was just a shadow or type of the heavenly. It was created according to the pattern shown to Moses by God. 6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. Christ serves (or ministers to) us with a better relationship (of covenant and promises) than was possible for man under the law. 7 For if that first [covenant] had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. The first covenant was faulty as man was not able to keep the law completely to enjoy the relationship with God and receive the promises. 8 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: The major prophets spoke and promised a new, everlasting covenant which would come from God. [Isaiah 55:3, Ezekiel 16:60, Jeremiah 31:31] 9 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I page 12 of 26 chipmorrow.org

regarded them not, saith the Lord. Israelites could not keep the covenant of law and God was not bound to a broken covenant. 10 For this [is] the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: [Jeremiah 31:33] The foundation of the new covenant is the infilling of the Spirit. [Ezekiel 11:19] 11 And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. We are able to know God after Christ justified us unto righteousness. Our teacher is the Spirit of God to which our new born again spirits were united. [John 14:26] 12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. Under the new covenant of grace and mercy, sins are totally forgiven and forgotten [Micah 7:18-19], not just covered or appeased for a year by animal blood sacrifices as in the old covenant. [Leviticus 9:18] 13 In that he saith, A new [covenant], he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old [is] ready to vanish away. A new covenant indicates that the old covenant is not revised or amended but to be totally replaced and put aside. Hebrews 9 Old and New Covenants Compared In the old covenant, approaching God was done by one man, one day in each year, but now in the new covenant, every believing man can come to God in every minute of every day forever. The old meeting place was symbolic, a physical tabernacle made with hands, but now it is an eternal, spiritual tabernacle in heaven. The old sacrifice was made with blood of bulls and goats, but now the perfect sacrifice is complete by the blood of Christ. Before man came to God with sacrifice and in fear, but now he may come boldly to the throne of Grace. The Imperfect Way to Approach God 1 Then verily the first [covenant] had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary. 2 For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein [was] the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is called the sanctuary. 3 And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all; In the holy of holies is where the intimate fellowship between God and man was experienced. 4 Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein [was] the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant; 5 And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat; of which we cannot now speak particularly. The holy of holies was the place of the presence of God and His mercy and grace. 6 Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service [of God]. 7 But into the second [went] the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and [for] the errors of the people: chipmorrow.org page 13 of 26

The high priest had to offer blood for his sins and then for the people. Christ is sinless so His blood sacrifice is only offered for us. 8 The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing: The new tabernacle (relationship between God and man) is brought by the Spirit through the veil of Christ into the holiest. 9 Which [was] a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience; Sacrifices did not clear the sin conscience from man. The sins were only covered not eliminated. 10 [Which stood] only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed [on them] until the time of reformation. Christ's Blood Sealed the New Covenant 11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; Christ brings a promise of good relationships and access to the Godhead always, not only in the tabernacle. 12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption [for us]. One single sacrifice of the blood of Christ was accepted for an everlasting redemption for all who would believe. 13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: 14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? The physical sacrifice satisfies only the physical which is temporary. The blood of Christ is much more than the blood offering by the priests. An object or person is much more than its shadow. The sacrifice of Jesus cleans our soul (conscience) of the dead works. Works are to be judged by the spiritual motive and not the physical results. Good works are motivated by faith and true thanksgiving. Our dead works to earn righteousness fade and are worthless next to the blood of Christ. [Isaiah 64:6] Faith without works is dead, faith is followed by works as lightning is always followed by thunder. The life is in the blood, thus the life of Christ was given for us. A great price was paid for man upon whom God placed a great value (worth or glory). The power and value of blood of Christ eclipses by universe dimensions (light years) those multitudes of animal blood offerings. 15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions [that were] under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. Without righteous forgiveness, man's conscience remembers and rehearses his sin and guilt. The new covenant gives redemption and a continual inheritance of un-earned blessings forever. 16 For where a testament [is], there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. Christ had to die before the conditions of His last will and testament would become effective. 17 For a testament [is] of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth. page 14 of 26 chipmorrow.org

Christ's death gave power and authority to his testament (will). He is the Executor distributing the just inheritance to all His heirs according to His will. 18 Whereupon neither the first [testament] was dedicated without blood. Without innocent blood, no sin is covered by the old covenant or eliminated by the new covenant. 19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people, 20 Saying, This [is] the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you. The blood sealed the agreement and the promises of both parties as signing a document in the presence of witnesses does. The One Sacrifice that Defeats Sin 21 Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry. 22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. Blood must give its life, replacing the death of sin. [Leviticus 17:11] 23 [It was] therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. The first tabernacle and its service and offerings was a pattern of the present heavenly (spiritual) worship and service. 24 For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, [which are] the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us: Christ is our Past Atonement, our Present Advocate, and our Future Advent. The Present Advocate for the born again sits in the presence of the Father not begging or pleading but interceding with the authority of the new covenant. 25 Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others; Christ's Past Atonement was a much more sufficient price for the eternal redemption for all to receive forgiveness and acceptance. 26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. The past, single, completed Atonement of Christ by His death, eliminated the sins of all men, forever. 27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: Christ in the likeness of all men died once to face His judgment (receiving reward or punishment). All men will stand to receive judgment, which is rewards for the believers and punishment for the unbelieving. 28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation. The Future Advent (return) of Christ will accomplish this judgment and the deliverance of those looking forward to His arrival. Hebrews 10 Presenting a Perfect Sacrifice The tradition and the law of the repetitive sacrifices was imperfect. The sacrifice by Christ totally replaces the sacrifices by the earthly priests. God receives no pleasure in the law. Through Christ, one chipmorrow.org page 15 of 26

eternal, perfect sacrifice enables our hearts to be filled with faith. As believers we are just and with patience the just live by faith. The Obedient Servant and Sacrifice 1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, [and] not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. The law was a preview of the relationship desired by God. God gave man many shadows of things to come: Aaron was a shadow of Christ, the animal sacrifice of Christ's death, and the temple of the church. Man could not meet his promises to live righteousness, so the old covenant was not effective. 2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins. The sacrifices did not eliminate sins, only covered them. God and the people still remembered them. 3 But in those [sacrifices there is] a remembrance again [made] of sins every year. Even with the continual yearly sacrifices, the remembrance and conscientiousness of sin remains with man. 4 For [it is] not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. Even the blood of perfect, innocent animals sacrificed can only cover man's sins. 5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: [Psalms 40:6-7] This quote is by David who further in this psalm wrote that obedience is better than sacrifice. Christ's obedience pleased the Father. 6 In burnt offerings and [sacrifices] for sin thou hast had no pleasure. 7 Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God. Jesus Christ came to do the will of the Father. [John 4:34, 6:38] 8 Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and [offering] for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure [therein]; which are offered by the law; God was not satisfied with continual failings of man and the continual sacrifices to cover their sins. 9 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. Only one covenant at a time exists between God and man. The first was a shadow and type which needed continual offerings of animal blood. The new covenant fulfills and replaces the old with the single blood sacrifice of Christ for atonement and opens the way for fellowship with God. 10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once [for all]. The sacrifice of Christ was a complete elimination of the unrighteousness of man. Man is clothed with and made the righteousness of Christ. The New and Living Way for Us 11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: The priests' daily offerings only covered sins never eliminating them. 12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; Christ, the great, high priest, made the perfect, eternal offering so the sacrifice was complete and page 16 of 26 chipmorrow.org

finished. [Hebrews 4:14] 13 From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. The defeat of the devil is complete but the last enemy to be destroyed will be death. [1 Corinthians 15:25-26] 14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. Christ Jesus made one offering for all believers for ever. 15 [Whereof] the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, The Holy Spirit is the evidence of our righteousness (forgiven-ness) before God. The Holy Spirit is the seal-of-approval on those who believe in Christ's finished work of redemption. [Ephesians 1:13] 16 This [is] the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; The new covenant is a spiritual relationship not like the old covenant of regulated, physical actions and rituals. [Jeremiah 31:31-33] 17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. God does not see through the blood of Christ to see the sins of man. [Jeremiah 31:34] The forgiven sins are cast into the sea. [Micah 7:19] 18 Now where remission of these [is, there is] no more offering for sin. Remission (freedom, liberty) of sin is the total elimination and erasing of sins and iniquities from His and our memories. [Isaiah 43:45, Hebrews 8:12] 19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By blood and grace, we are welcome into the presence of God and at the throne of grace. [Hebrews 4:16] 20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; The new way is a living way as Christ rose and lives forever more. Christ's flesh was torn as was the temple veil to become a doorway into God's presence instead of a separating barrier. [Matthew 27:51] For believers, the veil is now taken away. [2 Corinthians 3:14-15] 21 And [having] an high priest over the house of God; Christ is the great, high priest of God's people forever. [Hebrews 4:14] Let Us - in Faith, in Hope and in Love (1 Corinthians 13:13) 22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. This let us can bring a nearer, deeper relationship with God. We can have faith and be confident that the blood and the water cleans our souls and our bodies from sin's thoughts and actions. 23 Let us hold fast the profession of [our] faith without wavering; (for he [is] faithful that promised;) (The word faith should be translated hope as in every other instance.) Let us never let go of our hope given to us by a faithful God. We can draw near with complete confidence which faith in our High Priest's righteousness brings. We can be bold to enter into an intimate fellowship with the Creator and Father God because we have been made clean in our hearts (the intersection of spirit and soul) and our bodies (our actions in the flesh). Our relationship with God is now has boldness and liberty. His eyes are always toward us. He has opened His arms to us. Our response is now to turn toward Him and draw near with the full assurance of receiving His love and grace. chipmorrow.org page 17 of 26
