For more information on the transformation of the Evangelical Church to the Evangelical and Reformed Church and later, the United Church of Christ, please consult the website, The collection includes correspondence, photographs, ministerial papers, publications, and publicity clippings and is divided into six series: Bode Family, Erwin H. and Ella Bode, Erwin R. and

3 3999 Bode Family, Papers, page 3 Joanne Bode, Related Families, Evangelical and Reformed Church, and Publications. The Bode Family series consists of correspondence, photographs, ministerial papers, sermons, and miscellaneous materials of three generations of the Bode family. The series is arranged chronologically and then alphabetically by type of material. Because the papers of Erwin Bode and his son make up the bulk of the collection, they have been put into separate series. The series includes lists of young people confirmed by Casper Bode, the sermons of Casper, Henry, and Gottfried, and a history of the Femme Osage settlement, written by Henry Bode, describing the development of the Evangelical Church and Casper Bode s life and work in the church. Also included in this series are the transcribed letters of Gottfried and Emilie Bode written during their courtship in 1900 and 1901, genealogical information, a bounty of family photographs, and round robin correspondence written between the third generation of Bode brothers and sisters which they termed the Brosistle. Much of the early correspondence and sermons in this series are written in German. Paul Bode kept photograph scrapbooks depicting personal and family events. However, only a few scrapbook pages remained and there was no coherent order to them. These pages have been photocopied and disassembled for preservation purposes. The Erwin H. and Ella Bode series is comprised of correspondence, including many Brosistles, photographs, publicity clippings, and ministerial papers of Erwin and Ella Bode. The series is divided into the Bode s personal and professional papers and chronologically therein. The personal materials in this series include diaries, school yearbooks and report cards, and a memoir. Some of the correspondence from Erwin s mother in the 1920s and 1930s is written in German. A significant portion of the photographs document the Bodes early years in the ministry at La Pointe, Madeline Island, Wisconsin, in the 1930s. The series also contains an almost complete set of annual and monthly pastor s reports from Bode s long career with only a seven year gap from 1945 to Also included are photographs of confirmation classes and church events, sermons, and publicity clippings. The Erwin R. and Joanne Bode series contains correspondence, photographs, pastor s reports, writings, and newsletters documenting the Bodes work at St. Martin s United Church of Christ in Dittmer, Missouri; as the leader of campus ministries in Michigan and Indiana; and in the church conference in Massachusetts. A memoir written by Joanne Bode is also included in the series, as are audio tapes of the Bodes wedding and Erwin Bode s ordination. The series is arranged chronologically, except for the personal materials located at the end of the series, which are arranged alphabetically and chronologically therein. The Related Families series contains photographs, correspondence, and family histories of the Hoefer and Bockholdt families. An audio cassette of a worship service conducted at a Hoefer family reunion in 1985 is also included. The Hoefers of Higginsville, Missouri were Emilie (Gottfried s wife) Bode s family and the Bockholdts of Plymouth, Nebraska, were Ella Bode s family. The series is arranged alphabetically by type of material for each family and chronologically therein.

4 3999 Bode Family, Papers, page 4 The Evangelical and Reformed Church series is comprised of Synod publications and miscellaneous materials documenting the history and mission of the church and is arranged alphabetically with the publications listed chronologically. Included are anniversary publications and photographs of Eden Seminary and Elmhurst College, hymnals, and pamphlets discussing the merger of the Evangelical and Reformed Church with the Congregational Church to form the United Church of Christ in The bulk of the Publications series appears to be Casper Bode s library of theological works including the catechism and pastor s manuals dating from 1754, which were handed down to later generations of Bodes. Some of the secular works include a primer/alphabet book, dictionary, and world history. Most are written in German. The series is arranged chronologically.
