Brother Knights, Father Jim Lee has requested that the Knights of Columbus pray for religious vocations at the St. Joseph Adoration Chapel at the St. Michael Downtown Church for one or more hours per week. We have designated Sunday AM hours of 1AM, 2AM, or 3AM on June 1 st, 8 th, 15 th, 22 nd, and 29 th as our Knights of Columbus hours. Grand Knight s Message Brother Knights I just returned home from the 2014 State Convention in Bellevue with the company of our current FN and our Deputy Grand Knight for the 2014-2015 Fraternal Year,

2 Grand Knight s Message Brother Knights I just returned home from the 2014 State Convention in Bellevue with the company of our current FN and our Deputy Grand Knight for the Fraternal Year, Mike Colosi. Our Council did very well this year. We took back the title of most funds raised in last year s Tootsie Roll drive and we brought the trophy back home (well, the Tootsie Roll lunch box, that is) (see picture below) and we also took first place in the Culture of Life Award for our hard work and, of course, Brother Ed Sauley s dedication to the March for Life. Now the winners go to the Supreme convention to see if they can win the International Award. Speaking of the Supreme Convention, I was elected as a delegate and I will be one of eight Brothers attending the Supreme Convention representing Washington State in Orlando, Florida the first week of August. This will be an awesome event to be part of with Brother Knights from around the world. I will make sure we take plenty of pictures to share with everyone when we return. This is the time of the year we choose the Knight of the Year and the Family of the Year. This year s Knight of the Year is our Brother Knight Tom Hruska. Tom is one of the hardest working Knights we have in our Council and if it s not a Knight function or event, he is volunteering at St Michael s, or he is at Planned Parenthood. Tom is just a great guy all around. It s Brothers like Tom that make me proud to be a Brother Knight. Our Family of the Year is Don and Carole Robbins. Everyone knows Don and Carole in the Knights and even around town everyone knows them. I have been at different events and Don has introduced me to someone that is a long-time family friend or a relative (they are related to everyone around here). We are blessed to have had four generations of Robbins in our Council, and three currently. Don, son Allen, and Grandson Kevin are also members in our Council. If you re around during the day, a lot of time you will find Don helping out at Sacred Heart, St Martin s or at the Hall. If you see Don or Carole, thank them for everything they do. These Brother Knights are great examples of what it means to be Knight in the Knights of Columbus. This month we had our annual Clergy Appreciation Dinner and it was very well attended. Dave Wickersham gave Fr. Michael Wagner a beautiful print he did of Blessed Pope John Paul II since he is now leaving St Michael for assignment in two parishes in Elma and Montesano on July 1st. If you re in his neighborhood, stop in and say hello to Fr. Michael. Chef Sam did an awesome with our new menu, making this event more affordable with his famous spaghetti and meatball dinner. Great job Sam! The next morning I was invited to attend the Special Olympic Breakfast of Champions with about 1,000 other supporters in the downtown Seattle Convention Center. I, along with Kim and Barbara Washburn, Ron and Elaine DeGroot, and Sam and Anthony Pellegrino all had a wonderful time. Anthony was even on TV. To me the highlight was listening to guest speaker Tim Harris from New Mexico. Tim is 24 years old and has Down Syndrome and he owns his own restaurant called Tim s Place. His signs says Tim s Place, Breakfast, Lunch and Hugs. Here is the link to Tim s website If you get a chance, check it out. Also many of us helped out in Tacoma earlier this month at the Regional Special Olympic games and were the Knights of Columbus Shot Put experts (we did learn a lot about shot putting). On May 31 st - June 1 ST the Summer Games will be held at JBLM. If you want to help out contact me, and I will forward the information to you. Well I am not going to get into Membership this month since we are at the finish line with the new fraternal year starting July 1 st. I do hope that we will do better next year on recruiting new members to our Council. This is the only way to grow and get new people involved so we all don t have to work every event. So I will issue my Grand Knight Challenge again at the 1 st meeting of the fraternal year. Below you will find the list of officers for the fraternal year and I thank them for their serve in advance. Remember if you haven t paid your 2014 dues please contact Jim Pivec ASAP to discuss how to take care of this matter. If you have a finical hardship please let us know as other Brothers have paid extra toward helping others. We can t help you if you don t ask us. Don t forget the Inter Council picnic on Saturday August 9 Columbus Park from 1-4pm so please see flyer in this newsletter for more information. FAITHFUL NAVIGATOR S MESSAGE Gentlemen, This will be my Final message as Faithful Navigator, Jim Pivec and Tom Brignole will no longer have to remind me to write something and to hurry up and do it.

Hopefully I didn't tick too many of you off. As of this writing we just had our annual Memorial Day Mass and Blessing of the graves at Calvary Cemetery.

And thank you to our resident Chef and Faithful Admiral Sam Pellegrino for the wonderful brunch, wish I could have stayed for seconds.

Thank you Color Corps members who were in attendance and to the Schola, great job as always gentlemen. And thank you to our resident Chef and Faithful Admiral Sam Pellegrino for the wonderful brunch, wish I could have stayed for seconds. Upcoming events, K of C Schola Cantorum June 1 st - Corporate Communion at St. Columban in Yelm with brunch to follow at Red Wind Casino. Remember gentlemen this is an event for Sir Knights and prospective Sir Knights. Let s have a good showing and maybe we can glean some new members from Yelm. June 27th will be our first of many, I hope, Pig Roasts at Columbian Hall. See details in this month s newsletter. Lastly I would like to thank all of the Knights who participated in this year s March for Life at St. Martin s, (valets in training) and Kitchen Staff at Sacred Heart. We won the Quality of Life Award at the State Convention in Bellevue and will be up for the same at Supreme Convention in Florida this summer. Sir Knight Ed Sauley did a Great write up and Presentation, Thank you Sir. Grand Knight Darren Johnson will be our representative at the convention this summer, hopefully he can bring home the gold, so to speak. Sincerely, Michael R. The only requirements are an appreciation of traditional Sacred Music (as well as more contemporary and Patriotic music), the ability to carry a tune, and the enjoyment of weekly fellowship with other members. We meet Tuesday evenings at Pellegrino s Event Center between the hours of 7:00pm and 9:00pm. Refreshments are usually provided. We sing for such events as Memorial Day Mass at Calvary Cemetery, combined Choir Mass with the choirs at St. Michael s and Sacred Heart, our annual Memorial Mass for Deceased Members at the Hall, the Council Christmas and St. Patrick Day parties, St. George s Pilgrimage, and the Tridentine Latin Mass. 13 FAMILY OF THE MONTH ED AND DANI SAULEY The Father Nicholas Rausch OSB Council 1643 Family of the month for May is Ed and Dani Sauley. Brother Ed is an Honorary Life Member having joined in 1979 and is a 4th Degree Knight. Ed and Dani have long been the Council 1643 Pro Life Family, and Pro Life representatives to St Michael and St. George parishes. They were directly involved in the Knights of Columbus memorials to the pre-born at those locations. Ed has also been Captain and Faithful Navigator of the 4th Degree. They were the Family of the Year for Washington State in 2011 and were 3rd in the International Family of the Year contest that year. Currently, he leads the 40 Days for Life interdenominational protests at abortion centers across the Washington. There have been many saves of children s lives since this group began their efforts. Ed helps out at the Council level whenever possible, as a driver, a painter, and any other function that needs his assistance notably the annual Vocation Auction to support seminarian expenses. They both have been very active in parish life. Ed and Dani were very supportive and active at Holy Family School in Lacey, WA. In the late 70s and 80s. Dani was volunteer secretary and Ed served as a director. Ed helped establish Boy Scout Troop 007 at Lacey s Sacred Heart Parish and became the boy s first scoutmaster. In the early 90s, Ed was an executive member of the Seattle Archdiocesan Pastoral Council for the South Sound Deanery. Both helped in the development of the Byzantine Rite Catholic Church in Olympia. He was involve in Sacred Heart Parish s Holy Name Society and Past President of the Parish Council. For many years, Ed has been a steadfast attendee at Perpetual Adoration at St. Michael s in the early hours on Sundays. Ed was a military helicopter pilot and then became a 747 pilot before retiring to work within the church and the Knights. They have six children and 13 grandchildren with 4 children who have been in the military. He says, The Knights of Columbus is a wonderful international organization. Not only does it do considerable work for people throughout the world, but also here locally. The meetings are comprised of a group of men who come together for comradeship and to pray the rosary. Thus, it is somewhat unique in today's society. These meetings always reflect our care for each other, our families and friends. If you haven't had a chance to come lately, please do. 14 KNIGHT OF THE MONTH JOHN ZYRKOWSKI III The Father Nicholas Rausch OSB Council 1643 Knight of the month for May is John Zyrkowski III. Brother John joined in 2004 and became a 4th Degree Knight that same year. John served as Faithful Pilot for his 4th Degree Assembly in Maryland, and also as Financial Secretary for our Council 1643 from 2010 to 2012, partially completing his tenure while living in San Jose, CA. He returned permanently to Olympia in John and Nancy Zyrkowski John has also aided the council in many of its activities most notably the annual Vocation Auction to support seminarian expenses. He developed automated methods for accounting and credit card check-out that improved the Auction participant experience. He has also worked to improve the Council 1643 web site by adding a shortened Form 100. With his wife Nancy, they have participated in many activities at St. Michael and were on the reception committee for several years. After graduation from College they both were Volunteers in Guatemala in the Peace Corps during that country s civil war. After completing his MBA, John became a senior executive in many Fortune 500 companies and smaller companies including Rockwell, Alcoa, and CertainTeed. He also consulted with 150 other major companies internationally. His primary efforts were to maintain or return high paying blue collar jobs to U.S. plants through achieving Global Competitiveness. Nancy has been the senior director of several Rehabilitation Hospitals including Providence St. Peter. They have one son and a grandchild. John says It was a great joy to join the Knights of Columbus and find an international group of men who are dedicated to pleasing the Lord through their daily activities so that His Kingdom can be realized on this Earth. The energy that I find within this group is as strong as I have found in the most dedicated Clergy that I have known while crisscrossing the world. John with granddaughter Zoey who is wearing a Mayan Guipile from Guatemala. Thank you, Brother Knight John, for all that you continue to do.
