1 THE WEEKLY MESSENGER 1358 South Lake Drive Lexington, SC Week of October 22, 2017 Reformation Sunday The 500th Anniversary of Luther s Movement We live in an age that distrusts higher education somewhat. Sometimes that is for political reasons and sometimes it is for personal reasons. In the church the emphasis on personal Bible reading (a good thing) has led people to believe that they can interpret Scripture without the aid of the community and serious study (not such a good thing). Luther was in school for years. He earned a doctorate. He studied hard. He learned Greek and Hebrew and read the Bible in the original languages. Most people of his day read the official Latin version if they could read. In his studies, Luther paid attention to the words of Acts 2:38. There Peter says, Repent and be baptized In the official Latin version of the time, the word repent was translated Do penance That means you had to do something to please God first. But Luther had studied the Greek the original language and found that the word really meant, Come to your senses or Turn around and come back Instead of a task master demanding you do something to become acceptable, God was a loving father waiting for you to come home. What Luther nailed to the chapel door in Wittenberg were points for an academic debate that were widely circulated by the printing press the internet of the day! The Church of Jesus Christ must always be reforming itself lest we get trapped by bad translations, false understandings and deceptive practices. The Reformation is a call for us to be ever vigilant and to continue to study. Come celebrate! Come learn! Come and repent! Pastor Kevin Reformation Fair, Food and Hymn Sing October 29 th 3pm-5pm (fair) 5:30pm hymn sing.
