1 Francis McDowell Grange Trivia Challenge 2014 Congratulations for accepting the challenge! My suggestion to you is to answer as many of the questions as you can without the aid of additional resources first. This is not a test - you can use the resources that were used to develop this challenge to find the answers to the questions you cannot answer. Resources used to create this test were the National Grange website, Digest, Manual, The Grange First Century of Service and Evolution, Knights of the Plow, Rich Harvest ~ A History of the Grange and The Grange ~ Friend of the Farmer Assume all questions are in reference to the Fourth Degree unless otherwise stated. Make sure all answers are legible. When you have completed your Challenge return it to the National Grange Youth Development Director. 2 20. Who is the National Grange Youth and Young Adult Director? 21. Who compiled the first printed Grange songbook? 22. What song was written to be used at Silver Star & Golden Sheaf ceremonies? 23. What is the Court of final appeal in which charges against officers of the National Grange can be preferred? 24. Who did Kelley appoint the first deputy? 25. What did the National Grange publish in 1924 and consider to be truly comprehensive? 26. What wages are expected by the candidates in the first degree? By August 1, 1868, Kelley had solicited support from five leading farmers magazines and the newspapermen agreed to print articles about the Order. Name the five leading farmers magazines Who presented Master Newsom with a charcoal portrait at the National Session in 1953? 33. Which Founder is credited with the plan of organization and advocated establishing township, county, state, and national bodies? 34. Which Founder took charge of the finances; it was due to his idea to invest in government bonds that gave the Order sufficient funds to tide them over the years of Depression? 35. Which Founder was an expert in parliamentary law and journalism? 36. Which Founder excelled as a propagandist? 37. Which Founder was known as the wet blanket of the Order? 38. Which Founder wrote the ritual for the Sixth and Seventh Degrees, and corrected and approved that of the lower degrees? 39. To which Founder are Grangers indebted for the high moral tone without religious bias which comes all through the ritual?
3 40. Which Founder is credited for linking agriculture with the mythical teachings of earlier centuries? Who said or wrote each of the following? 41. The prime purpose of government is to protect its citizens from aggression both physical and economic. 42. To sum up, we have here a propagandist, an organizer, a ritualist, a parliamentarian and journalist, a man of God, a critic, and a financier. Could any one of these have given us our Order as we have it today? Could more than these have made it any better? 43. The National Grange has sought to educate farmers and non-farmers alike on the need for a strong farm family, agriculture and a prosperous and stable rural America. 44. Establish primary Granges for children. In these we can teach them by illustrative lessons, interspersed with music and singing, to love the farm. Give them amusement and recreation. Have in each Grange a microscope and a copy of Webster s Unabridged. 45. The Grange not only aids to realizing the conception of a rich and rounded rural life, but helps to build into our national fibre the ideals of sound citizenship and patriotic service. It is clearly one of the most salutary forces in American Life. 46. There is a time in the life of every farmer s boy when he becomes disgusted with farm life. At or before that time I would admit him to the Order and try to educate him to a love of the occupation. 47. The National Grange is part of our American heritage of freedom, initiative and courage. You have fought valiantly for those principles which have made America great. You stand as a beacon of strength, working not alone for the America of today but also for the America of tomorrow. 48. In its origin the Order of Patrons of Husbandry was a providential creation: a statement at once to startling, so unusual and so easily suggestive of actual irreverence, that it should not be made by anyone unless capable of complete verification by positive facts. 49. Through your organization s history, Grangers have been concerned with the responsibilities of total citizenship as well as the problems and the progress of agriculture. I am confident this philosophy will prevail in the challenging and promising days ahead. 50. Meetings of fraternal orders serve as valuable schools for those who attend them. What are candidates called in each of the first four degrees? 51. First Degree 52. Second Degree 53. Third Degree 54. Fourth Degree
4 What are the symbols in each of the first four degrees? 55. First Degree 56. Second Degree 57. Third Degree 58. Fourth Degree Name the divisions of the Patrons of Husbandry What items are necessary for an official meeting? During which degree is each of the following said? 67. Brothers and Sisters, to live in the country and enjoy all its pleasures, we should love rural life. 68. God loveth a cheerful giver, and no less a cheerful worker; for work is prayer. _ 69. Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding; for the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. 70. What a child sees makes the most lasting impression. 71. Good deeds are ever fruitful of yet more good. 72. Courage, then, and patience, when gloom broods over your pathway. Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. Identify the officer being installed. 73. Of all the sweeteners of human toil, of all the motive powers that give alacrity to the hand or foot, readiness to the will, and intelligence to mind and purpose, the quickest and most enduring in results is the kind word spoken in season. _ 74. Cast thy bread upon the waters, and thou shalt gather it after many days. 75. A well-ordered household is essential to a happy home, and without a happy home no farm is fully a success. 76. may you prove to all that you are honorable and worthy of the trust. _ 77. Let me caution you, that you keep the eye of the mind open among your members. _
5 78. You will find many claiming a thorough knowledge of the business of the farm who, at the same time, are ignorant of the first principles of the laws of Nature. _ 79. Which National Master s administration saw the establishment of the National Grange Publicity Bureau? 80.
