7 Source #3 The causes that led to the serious disturbance of the peace in the northwest last autumn and winter were so remarkable that an explana7on of them is necessary in order to comprehend the seriousness of the situa7on. The Indians assuming the most threatening a<tude of hos7lity were the Cheyennes and Sioux. Their condi7on may be stated as follows: For several years following their subjuga7on in 1877, 1878, and 1879 the most dangerous element of the Cheyennes and the Sioux were under military control. Many of them were disarmed and dismounted; their war ponies were sold and the proceeds returned to them in domes7c stock, farming utensils, wagons, etc. Many of the Cheyennes, under the charge of military officers, were located on land in accordance with the laws of Congress, but aker they were turned over to civil agents and the vast herds of buffalo and large game had been destroyed their supplies were insufficient, and they were forced to kill camle belonging to white people to sustain life. The fact that they had not received sufficient food is admimed by the agents and the officers of the government who have had opportuni7es of knowing. The majority of the Sioux were under the charge of civil agents, frequently changed and oken inexperienced. Many of the tribes became rearmed and remounted. They claimed that the government had not fulfilled its trea7es and had failed to make large enough appropria7ons for their support; that they had suffered for want of food, and the evidence of this is beyond ques7on and sufficient to sa7sfy any unprejudiced intelligent mind.

10 Source #2 But the prime cause, and the real objects of this war, are not distinctly understood by a large portion of the honest, disinterested, and well-meaning citizens of the United States. many of them have been deceived and misled, by the misrepresentations of those concerned in it, and especially by hireling writers for the newspaper press. They have been induced to believe that the inhabitants of Texas were engaged in a legitimate contest for the maintenance of the sacred principles of Liberty, and the natural, inalienable Rights of Man:---whereas, the motives of its instigators, and their chief incentives to action, have been from the commencement, of a directly opposite character and tendency. It is susceptible of the clearest demonstration that the immediate cause and the leading object of this contest originated in a settled design, among the slaveholders of this country, (with land speculators and slave traders) to wrest the large and valuable territory of Texas from the Mexican Republic, in order to re-establish the SYSTEM OF SLAVERY; to open a vast and profitable SLAVE MARKET therein; and, ultimately, to annex it to the United States.

11 Source #3 My first arrival in Santa Fé was in October after a journey of seventy days, which at that time was not considered a specially long trip... The people were nearly all in extreme poverty, and there were absolutely none who could be classed as wealthy except by comparison. The Pinos and Ortizes were considered the ricos, and those most respected as leaders in society and political influence; but idleness, gambling, and the Indians had made such inroads upon their means and influence that there was but little left except the reputation of honorable descent from a wealthy and distinguished ancestry. The houses were nearly all old and dilapidated, the streets narrow and filthy, and the people, when in best attire, not half dressed... The system of peonage, or voluntary servitude, was a fixed institution. The wages of the laborers was only from three to six dollars a month, and a ration to the laborer only. From this he would have to support his family and pay the dues to the priest for marrying, baptizing, and burial of seven dollars and upwards, according to the ability and ambition of the individual desiring the services. An inflexible rule with the priests was: no money, no marrying; no money, [no] baptizing; no money, no burying... As a consequence the poor were extremely so, and without hope of bettering their condition.
