1 Editor: Robert E. Bukowski, PP July August 2015 Page 1 COUNCILS IN COLABORATION President s Message: It was my honor to be named President of the Chicago Chapter on June 25th. "Thank you" to all the members for their support and belief in me. I will work hard for the Chapter as your President, to continue the growth of our Chapter and our Order. Our goals for the Chapter are "Expansion of Involvement and Participation" by all Councils in the Chicago Archdiocese. We will attempt to have at least one Chapter Officer, make a personal appearance at each Council to talk of what the Chapter is, our programs, and to also explain what the Chapter can provide to the Council. Programs that we are going to expand or start are "Coats for Kids", "Mercy Home for Boys and Girls", "Father McGivney Hope and Healing Center", and "Wheelchair Program". To expand the "Coats for Kids" program, we need to start with notifying Councils in July and have DD's to start collecting contribution promises by September. Each individual, Council, and DD's will be notified of and invited to the distribution, so they can participate in the distribution, along with the opportunity to use this Program as a recruitment tool. Any questions, please contact John Muldoon, johnmuldoon@comcast.net phone To continue to raise funds for "Mercy Home for Boys and Girls" through "Football Mania", but to also seek an opportunity to volunteer man hours for things that they need help with. "Shamrocks for Kids" has been very successful last year and will continue under Jeff Griggs. griggs1926@sbcglobal.net phone Continue the support of the "Father McGivney Center for Hope and Healing" as needed through Joe Moore, kcjoem@gmail.com phone The "Wheelchair Program" will seek financial help outside the Chapter, along with Council participation. This allows us to help provide wheelchairs to our disabled Veterans. Our program "Serving our Vets" is led by Alex Tennant, alexandert@kinsalecg.com phone We are looking into having a hospitality room at the State Convention in 2016, and supporting the next Midwest World Youth Day, in the fall. We have few goals and programs, but they are important. The Chapter looks forward to working with all the councils in the Archdiocese. Encourage brother Knights and their families to choose the Holy Family as their model of independence, sharing and showing respect for each other. Celebrate all aspects of the family, which is the foundation of society and of fundamental importance to the Knights of Columbus, by sponsoring council programs that allow families to enjoy each other s company, to talk and to be active together. From left - Holy Family s Golf Chairman DGK Tom Purvin Fr. McGivney board President Joseph Moore - Holy Family s Trustee Bob Fallon Holy Family GK Glenn Yamamoto Holy Family Knights of Columbus Council #11981 Inverness, IL hosted a golf tournament Monday June 22 nd as a fund raiser for the Fr. Michael J. McGivney Center for Hope & Healing. The building is a former convent which is now a home for women who have chosen life for their unborn child, despite feeling that they had no real choices.

4 Editor: Robert E. Bukowski, PP July August 2015 Page 4 Many of these women have experienced homelessness, abuse or abandonment, and until finding a home here at the Fr. McGivney Center, they had no idea how they were going to provide for themselves and their child. The fund raiser was held at Cary Country Club in Cary IL. The weather was beautiful, after a morning of heavy rain. Representatives in attendance for the day were state officers, Chapter officers, including the President, Assembly officers including the Faithful Navigator, Board Members of the Fr. Michael J. McGivney Center for Hope & Healing including the President, our insurance head and many of his field agents, and 15 different councils. The memory of Joe Felotico PGK & PFN of Divine Mercy Council # was fondly remembered during the day and evening festivities. Sponsorships of this tournament were supplied by many very generous businesses, like Northwest Pulmonary, Sleep & Wellness, headed by Brother Knight Dr. Dennis Kellar, our Archdiocese of Chicago Chapter, Bishop Sheild Assembly, Rob Adams and a large # of our Knights of Columbus Field Agents and 15 councils. After raffling off over 25 great prizes, like Bears United Club tickets, Cubs tickets, Wolves tickets, restaurant gift certificates and golf foursomes, McGivney Board President Joe Moore was brought up to be presented by the Holy Family Knights of Columbus Golf Chairman Tom Purvin & Grand Knight Glenn Yamamoto a check for the days proceeds of $12,000. Register to Join the Guild The Father Michael J. McGivney Guild serves as a source for information about the life, works and spirituality of Father McGivney. The Guild distributes informational materials about him, receives reports of favors granted through his intercession and oversees the distribution of relics. Guild members receive regular updates on the progress of Father McGivney's cause for canonization and are invited to participate in promoting devotion to this Servant of God. Members of the Knights of Columbus are not automatically Guild members and must elect to join the Guild. The Father Michael J. McGivney Guild Newsletter is published bimonthly except July- August, and is sent free to Guild members. To join the Guild, go to Shroud of Turin Exhibit Sponsored By: K of C Council Karol Wojtyla/Pope John Paul II Friday through Sunday August 7, 8 and 9, :00 AM to 7:00 PM FREE Admission (donations accepted) Shaunessy Center St. Eugene Parish 5220 N. Canfield Ave. Chicago, IL The Shroud of Turin has long been venerated by the faithful, and is believed by many to be the burial cloth of Jesus of Nazareth. It is one of the most scientifically studied religious icons in history. As science has advanced over the last few decades, so has the speculation on how the Man of the Shroud was made. This traveling exhibit details the history and various aspects of the shroud, and includes as its centerpiece, a full-length photographic image of the shroud itself. FIFTH SUNDAY ROSARY PROGRAM Councils are encouraged to conduct this new program The Fifth Sunday Rosary Program. This program is designed to encourage more involvement in Church activities by council members, their families and parishioners. The program should be conducted in the months that contain five Sundays. Those months in the fraternal year are August, November, January and May. Councils that wish to conduct this program should first consult with your local pastor or council chaplain in order to obtain permission to conduct the program and to ensure there is no conflict with other scheduled parish activities. Fifth Sunday Kits (#SR-KIT) are available through the Department of Fraternal Services. The kits consist of a finger rosary and prayer card. The prayer card contains instructions on how to pray the finger rosary as well as the prayers and mysteries of the rosary. Personal rosaries may also be used when participating in the program. Councils conducting this program during the fraternal year will fulfill all four Church Activity requirements for the Columbian Award. For additional information on the Fifth Sunday Rosary Program, please contact Jason Porrello at or jason.porrello@kofc.org. PRAY THE ROSARY AS OFTEN AS YOU CAN

6 Editor: Robert E. Bukowski, PP July August 2015 Page 6 WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR PEACE Each year, September 11, Marks the anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States. As the Knights of Columbus observe World Day of Prayer for Peace on that anniversary, we recall the tragic events of that day, and honor the thousands who lost their lives. We also pray for peace among nations, especially in those places where war or turmoil persist. We pray that religion will be a means of peace and accord and not an excuse for violence and division. At its annual meeting in 2004, the Supreme Council passed a resolution that September 11 th be observed each year as a World Day of Prayer for Peace. Councils, assemblies and circles are urged to organize events and activities on Sept. 11 promoting prayer for peace in the world, and recognize those individuals in your community who work to bring about true peace. It is also a time to encourage members and their families to take time out on this day for personal prayer and reflection. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR PEACE - September 11th God of peace, bring your peace to our violent world: peace in the hearts of all men and women and peace among the nations of the earth. Turn to your way of love those whose hearts and minds are consumed with hatred. God of understanding, overwhelmed by the magnitude of this tragedy, we seek your light and guidance as we confront such terrible events. Grant that those whose lives were spared may live so that the lives lost should not have been lost in vain. Comfort and console us, strengthen us in hope, and give us the wisdom and courage to work tirelessly for a world where true peace and love reign among nations and in the hearts of all. -Pope Benedict XVI Prayer Service at Ground Zero April 20, 2008 John Cardinal Cody Knights of Columbus Assembly 3264 Presents DAMIEN By Aldyth Morris Wayne Messmer plays Fr. Damien the Leper Priest of Molokai A must see for anyone who believes in heroes Damien is a powerful one man play starring Chicago s own Wayne Messmer. As Fr. Damien said It was not my doing that put the lepers in such desperate need. It was not my faith, nor my skills as a priest alone that comforted these hungry souls. I was simply trying to do what I could, with what means were available to me to bring the message to my flock, that God had not forgotten them. At a ceremony at the Vatican on October 11, 2009 Pope Benedict presided over the canonization of Saint Damien. This production, Damien, has brought audiences to their feet with the inspirational story of the humble Belgian priest who lived and died among the leper settlement on the Hawaiian Island of Molokai. The Damien story will be presented without intermission and a running time of 1 hour and 30 minutes. Reserved seating: $25 General seating: $15 Friday September 11 th at 7:00 PM St Daniel the Prophet Church 5400 S. Nashville Avenue Chicago, IL Doors open at 6:00 PM See flyer on page 10

7 Editor: Robert E. Bukowski, PP July August 2015 Page 7 The Chicago Archdioceses sponsored a Mass and picnic on Saturday June 28 th on the lakefront in Jackson Park. The weather was fantastic as we participated in the Eucharistic celebration and picnic that followed. It was a beautiful day that was enjoyed by everyone. Fortnight for Freedom is a program started through the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops by our Supreme Chaplin Archbishop William E. Lori while serving as Chairman, of the Committee for Religious Liberty. The theme of this year s Fortnight will focus on the freedom to bear witness to the truth of the Gospel. The celebrations where held throughout the United States from June 21 to July 4, The Respect Life Office of The Archdiocese of Chicago contacted the Chicago Chapter asking for the Knights support of this event. The Chapter, working with Dawn Fitzpatrick and Victor Vallejo from the Respect Life Office, agreed to provide and serve the food and beverages for the picnic. The menu consisted of hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, and potato chips, along with soda, water, and condiments. I would like to thank DD s Mike Centracchio and Clifford Doyle, Chicago Diocese Chairman Ken Cuprisen, and Jack McKay FS of St, Fluorine Council for there help and support at my last official act as President of the Chicago Chapter. I would also like to thank the Chicago Firefighters Union Local 2 for the use of their grills and equipment. We could not have succeeded without it. The excess food that remained was donated to Our Lady of Angels Church outreach program. Sr. Alicia wanted me to pass on a big Thank you to the Chicago Chapter.
