Science over faith, Unitarianism (God a one person, not trinity; goodness of human nature, free will, salvation in good works) Why do you think the founders of this nation wanted religion to focus on the works of the individual and science?

Charles Finney (women to pray in public, against alcohol and slavery) 4) What group of people were most attracted to religion? Women (religion gave them purpose, role, way to meet men!!!)

6 7) Identify two reasons many Americans were wary of Mormonism? Voted as a unit Cooperative/ Church and State connected (shared their wealth and gave much to the leaders of the Church) Polygamy (married more than one wife)

7 8) Who took over the Mormon s after Joseph Smith s death? Where did he move the Mormon s Brigham Young, Utah 9) Think- Why do you feel the Mormon s had to move out there? They would settle in an area that their were no other settlers and they could worship freely, plus Utah was in Mexico, not the United States at that time
