7 The Greek verb erchomai occurs over 600 times in the New Testament and usually means a physical action of coming or going. The verb hayko occurs only 27 times and usually has a similar meaning.... 7

8 ... When these verbs apply to time, days, seasons, ages, calamities or the Kingdom, they have more of a metaphorical meaning. The following examples show that they also can have a metaphorical meaning when applied to people, including Christ. 8

9 a. To become a follower: Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come (erchomai( erchomai) after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. (Mat. 16:24) 9

10 b. To follow in time: And as John fulfilled his course, he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not he. But, behold, there cometh one (erchomai( erchomai) after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose. (Acts 13:25) 10

11 c. To appear on the earth, in public, be born: For John came (erchomai( erchomai) neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil. The Son of man came (erchomai( erchomai) eating and drinking... (Mat. 11:18, 19a) 11

17 B. Christ's Comings to the 7 Churches of Revelation 17

18 Of special significance are the references to Christ's promise to come to the 7 churches in Revelation Chap. 2 & 3. Note these were actual churches and His comings must be interpreted first of all as His coming to them literally or spiritually during their actual historic existence. 18

19 1. Ephesus Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come (erchomai) unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent. (Rev. 2:5) 19

20 1. Ephesus (cont.) Apparently, they did repent at that time, but later Jesus did come as He promised He would; according to history, Jesus came in judgment, causing the witness of that local church to shine no more in that area; the Christians were dispersed to other places. 20

21 2. Smyrna The word come is not in the text, but His promise to give them the crown of life implied His coming to them before death, since they were already Christians. It was conditional on their being willing to die for Christ. (2:10) 21

22 3. Pergamum Repent; or else I will come (erchomai( erchomai) ) unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth. (Rev. 2:16) 22

23 3. Pergamum (cont.) I have found no evidence that they repented or not; however, it is clear in the letter that He said He would come and would address the specific situation if it continued to exist. The sword of my mouth is obviously symbolic and not a literal sword. 23

24 4. Thyatira But that which ye have already hold fast till I come (hayko( hayko) ) (Rev. 2:25) 24

25 4. Thyatira (cont.) The context shows that Jesus promised to come in order to cast Jezebel on a bed of suffering and make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent. Thus, this coming referred to a coming in judgment on Christians, where sickness was the judgment. 25

26 5. Sardis Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come (hayko( hayko) ) on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come (hayko)) upon thee. (Rev. 3:3) 26

27 5. Sardis (cont.)... I will come (hayko( hayko) ) on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come (hayko( hayko) ) upon thee. (Rev. 3:3) Here again, the coming of Jesus was to be in judgment on Christians during the earthly life of that church. 27

28 6. Philadelphia Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come (erchomai( erchomai) upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. (Rev 3:10) 28

29 6. Philadelphia (cont.)... the hour of temptation, which shall come (erchomai( erchomai) ) upon all the world... This tribulation must have come in their life time. 29

30 6. Philadelphia (cont.) Behold, I come (erchomai( erchomai) ) quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown. (Rev 3:11) They were already reigning -- wearing crowns -- they were to make sure that no one will take these crowns from them. 30

31 6. Philadelphia (cont.) Behold, I come (erchomai( erchomai) ) quickly...(3:11) Jesus was going to make the overcomers pillars in the temple of my God (3:12); i.e., leaders in the 1 st century church (the temple of God ). 31

32 6. Philadelphia (cont.) Note also that in verse 12, the New Jerusalem was coming down (kataballo( kataballo) out of heaven -- a present participle, denoting progressive present action. 32

33 7. Laodicea Jesus said that He was about to spit them out of my mouth (3:16)-- Obviously, doing so implies a coming to them. His promise to rebuke and discipline (3:19) also implies a coming to them. 33

34 7. Laodicea (cont.) Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come (eis-erchomai( eis-erchomai) ) in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. (Rev. 3:20) 34

35 7. Laodicea (cont.) He promised individuals who repent and thus open the door that He will come into their lives to have fellowship. We all have experienced this coming to some extent. Are we committed to keep repenting and experiencing His coming more and more??? 35

36 C. Preparing a Place and Coming Again (John 14:2-3) 36

37 In my Father s house are many mansions... I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come (erchomai)( again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. (John 14:2-3) 37

38 This passage is one of the best known in the Bible, but seldom interpreted in the light of its context. The strange translation of abiding places as mansions has given many Christians wild visions of luxurious houses in heaven. The place that Jesus is referring to and His coming again are extensively described and explained in this chapter (14) and in the next two. 38

39 The word in verse 2 that is incorrectly translated mansions is a noun from the verb meno, to abide, dwell, which is found many times in this chapter and the next. Example: Abide in Me. 39

40 As you read each verse of these chapters, consider that meno refers to our living in the place that Jesus was referring to when He said that where I am [NOW] ; ; note the present tense, showing that he meant that this is the place He was then dwelling in when He was talking with them. (Greek does not use the present tense to mean future as English does.) 40

41 Just as Jesus was living in the Father, so we live in Him the place in which He made it possible for us to live through the Cross and His Resurrection. 41

42 Abide (meno( meno) ) in me,, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide (meno( meno) in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide (meno( meno) ) in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth (meno) in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. (John 15:4-5) 42

43 If ye abide (meno( meno) ) in me,, and my words abide (meno( meno) in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. (15:7) 43

44 ... continue ye (meno)) in my love.. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide (meno)) in my love; ; even as I have kept my Father s commandments, and abide (meno)) in his love.. These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain (meno( meno) ) in you,, and that your joy might be full. (15:9-11) 44

45 I I Will Come Again As the verses above indicate, Jesus was telling the disciples that He would come again and take them to be in the place where He was then dwelling, a place in the Father, that also included the Father living in Him. 45

46 "I Will Come Again" Note these verses that indicate He came in and through the Holy Spirit at Pentecost to enable them and us to live in Him. Remember, He was talking directly to the disciples and thus everything He said to them would have had to be fulfilled in their lifetime. 46

47 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you

48 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you (to o His disciples and us). (14:16-18) 48

49 D. Let Christ Come NOW and Bring Unity 49

50 In many other scriptures, erchomai is used to apply to future comings of Christ. Christians differ in their understanding of the interpretation of such comings, whether we should expect Jesus physically in His resurrection body or spiritually in His many- membered Body... 50

51 ... Of most importance is that we seek for Him to come now to us, be revealed in us, shine forth in love from us now so that we may love those who differ in interpretations of Scripture. We all can embrace all of His comings and be prepared for any type of coming if we truly allow Him to come to us and through us as Love. 51
