It was a wonderful evening of roast pork loin and chicken Savoy accompanied by mushroom soup, roast potatoes and buttered string beans. This splendid meal was topped off with strawberry topped cheesecake. October 20 th was the third Wednesday of the month and that means we were cooking for the soup kitchen on the 19 th. Sir Knight Chef Joe and his merry men (Kevin Tighe, Bob Keating, Jake Dalton and Jim Smith) made a chicken noodle casserole. If you would like to help Chef Joe in with future soup kitchen cook-ins, please give him a call. He s in the Membership and Call Directory. In last month s issue of KNIGHTWATCH we described the finances for this venture of ours. This month I m delighted to tell you that brother Carl Pasquale sent us a check for $100 and didn t want any tickets. He wanted all the money to go to feed the folks at the soup kitchen. November 1999, Volume 25, No.9 THANK YOU, Carl! God surely blesses your generosity. We always have a number of tickets available. Please call Joe Delano if you would like to purchase one or more. If you want to join the volunteers who serve the delicious food that Joe and his cook mates whip up then call Frank Alexander. SPACE we ve needed it for a long time. Our Ryan Hall home is great for meetings and the kitchen works especially well when food is part of the main menu. But because we share our space with so many other organizations, storage is at a premium. We have our materials stored in five different closets and cupboards in the Church basement. This is hardly conducive to good organization and inevitably leads to items being lost and the expense of replacing them. But all that is about to change thanks to the creative thinking of Joe Delano and the cooperation of Deputy Grand Knight Tom Kovach s mom, Maria and Business Manager Paul Tighe. Joe and Maria were touring her printing store

2 Page 2 of 6 room in mid-october and Joe noticed that a reorganization and consolidation of the room s shelves and cabinets might permit a significant increase in usable space. Maria is more than happy to give us any extra space if we could help consolidate her materials. Along with the space comes four large cabinets and a storage closet no longer used. Paul Tighe needed to be consulted and he was more than happy to help us out, going so far as to alert our maintenance crew to discard unused, bulky items stored in the room, but no longer useful to anyone. Now the challenge is to get Maria s space organized and convert our newly found storage into a single consolidated location for all the Council s equipment and material. We could use some volunteers on this. Call Joe. Oh, yes. Along with the new space, Paul was kind enough to give us an old, unused Xerox copier that is sitting in the room. We have a choice as to whether to discard it or get it fixed. If any of you Brothers know of copier repair people who might be of help, it could be a boon to the Council. MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY The purpose of the Directory is to enhance communications among the Council members. From time to time, some or all of the Brothers need to be informed about special events or happenings. The Directory lists the phone number and address of each active member. Through a daisy chain setup, each member of the Council will receive a call from another member and may be asked to make one or more calls to other members to keep the chain going. If the calls are made reasonably timely, we should be able to reach everyone within a few days. We want to expand the usage of the Directory beyond what we now do with it by listing each member s interests in all or part of the Council s activities. By including your interests, Fax, Work and E- mail information, we can reach out to you when activity of interest to you is scheduled or committee work is needed. To achieve this for the next version of the Directory, we need you to complete and return the form on page 6. NEW MEMBERS We are delighted to welcome to our Council Jack Bendokas, who recently transferred in from the Union Council and seven new members who took their First Degree this past October 11 th. The new members are: Vernon Bremberg Short Hills Charles Dwyer Short Hills Jon Hetherington Millburn Vince Nascone Short Hills Anthony Moschetta Summit Joseph Persinger Short Hills Raymond Torres W. Orange Vern s and Jon s schedules permitted them to take the Second and Third degrees on October 13 th and 15 th, respectively. Congratulations to both of you on achieving full Knighthood. We have four men waiting to join our ranks, and that doesn t include any recruits our newest members will attract. SPIRITUALITY COMMITTEE OFF TO GOOD START The Spirituality Committee, under the direction of new member, Deacon Joe Persinger, is off to a great start. The Committee s agenda is ambitious with a host of activities in planning, including the sponsorship of Eucharistic Adoration for the whole parish on the First Fridays of November and December. The October Holy Hour ceremony, conducted by Joe and Ray Torres, went quite well. The same program will be used this and next month with a few refinements. Many thanks to Vern Bremberg for putting this program together. Thanks also to John Gilhooly and Jim Smith who, along with

3 their lovely wives Terry and Lukie, provided the hospitality for the event in Ryan Hall. Vern, Joe and Ray, all newly inducted Knights, will also be working on the Jubilee 2000 proposals. With these endeavors, the Council is on the leading edge of Parish planning for this holiest of years. As you know, Supreme has been very supportive of Jubilee 2000 efforts. The March For Life on January 24, 2000 has been a project of the Parish s Respect Life Committee in recent years, and has had financial support from the Knights in years gone by. Ray Torres, the group s cochair, thinks the Knights can be very supportive of the annual bus trip to Washington this year and will be helping to coordinate both groups efforts. Why shouldn t he think we can help. The K of C nationwide is in the forefront of the Right to Life movement and is opposed to abortion in every way, shape and form. Msgr. John Gilchrist, noted Advocate columnist, has committed to speak on February 20 th, 2000 at a St. Rose Knights sponsored Communion Breakfast. With the speaker in place the event must be planned for now. Committees need to be formed and all tasks delegated. These include Ticket, Program, Hospitality and Promotion Committees. Let s make this a terrific event for all the men of the Parish. It s up to us to follow through to insure the success of this undertaking. ANDREW S PICNIC We co-hosted a picnic on the grounds of the Seminary on October 16 th with the West Orange Council and the Archbishop Bayley Assembly. All the St. Andrew s seminarians were there along with their Rector, Msgr. Arthur Serratelli and faculty advisor, Fr. Bill Sheridan. We enjoyed a beautiful mass, concelebrated by the St. Andrews priests and Msgr. Trabold, followed by great weather and excellent food. Young, future priestly muscles did all the heavy lifting of tables and chairs, while Frank Sanchez and Charlie Trabold cooked up a storm. No one was hospitalized by the cooking, so it must have been a success. MINISTERS OF HOSPITALITY Here s a service opportunity for the Knights to help the Parish. Fellow Knight Bob Keating Page 3 of 6 coordinates this Parish ministry. Right now, he is in need of ushers for all weekend Masses. We already have a number of ushers in the Council, but could use a good number more to help out, even if only to assist with the collection basket at Mass. Won t you consider joining Joe Delano, Jake Dalton, Charlie Gosling, Bernie Cunningham, Tom Kovach, et al.? For these upcoming Social Nights, the whole family is invited, but especially the children of members of an age that might best benefit from these two fine speakers. This month marks the beginning of a new and hopefully interesting contest in which all of our Knights are participants. Here s how it works. We will show all the birthdays of members in the current month, as we do above. One mistake will be deliberately inserted in the Birthdays section of the KNIGHTWatch. The first Knight whose birthday is in the current month that calls Jake Dalton with the identification of the error and the correction to it will win a prize. The prize will be awarded at the next regular business meeting. Bon chance!
