2 Introduction Welcome to the First Church Election Publication, produced by the First Church Nominating Committee. This document provides pictures and biographies of the candidates for Church offices. Please review the contents to get to know the Church Members who would like to lead First Church for the Church Year. Members of the Church will choose from these candidates for next year s leaders at the election at the Annual Meeting on Sunday, June 13. 3 Vice-President Description: The Vice-President is a Church Board Trustee who assumes the additional duties of the Church Vice-President. The Vice-President is Presidentelect and succeeds to the Presidency at the Annual Membership Meeting the following year. After serving as President, this Trustee serves one additional year on the Church Board as Immediate Past President. Marv Pulliam Marv Pulliam is currently the chair of the Small Group Ministry Coordinating Council, which is the support arm for the Spiritual Friendship Groups at First Church. Marv is also co-facilitator of two SFG s this year. Other church activities include current service as an usher and as a trained facilitator for the Our Whole Lives Sexuality Education series. Marv came to First Church after his lifetime partner Nedra Bickel retired and they both moved from Santa Monica to San Diego in Marv had been active at the Santa Monica UU Church as the De Benneville Pines Camp registrar and was also active in their Small Group Ministry Program and their Adult OWL program. In his professional career, Marv began at RAND Corp. in In 1964 he joined Computer Sciences Corp. and spent the next 35 years with CSC in a variety of management positions, which afforded him the opportunity to live almost 20 years in Europe. Marv was active in establishing a UU fellowship in Belgium in He was introduced to the Unitarian faith when he joined the Emerson Unitarian Fellowship in Canoga Park in 1960.

4 Treasurer Description: The Treasurer is a Church Board Trustee who assumes the additional duties of the Church Treasurer. The Treasurer may not serve more than three consecutive one-year terms. Armin Kuhlman Armin Kuhlman is currently serving as Interim treasurer. Previous related church activities include member and then chair of both the Budget Subcommittee and then the Finance (Stewardship) Committee. Other church activities include current service as an usher and the UUMF. He was also previously on the Membership committee as well as chair of the Environmental Task Force. Armin is also currently Treasurer of the San Diego Foundation for Change. He has been a volunteer with AARP- Tax Aid, READ San Diego literacy tutor and the Sierra Club. With over 30 years accounting, finance and management experience, he is presently interim Controller and Human Resources Manager with a local manufacturing company. He is a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Management Accountant.

The responsibilities of the Church Board are provided under the Church Constitution. 1-year Term Andre sullivan Andre Sullivan has served as RE leader for the 2-3 year old class, is a member of the stopping gender violence group, is a previous chairman of the church ushers and served one year on the Nominating Committee. Andre is currently working in the hospitality field as an auditor for a hotel chain. He also volunteers as a basketball coach for 4 th and 5 th grade intercity school children. Andre was invited to attend a church service in 1985 and after only three Sunday services decided he had found his church home. In 1986 he and Jane were married on the patio on a wonderful Saturday afternoon. Now, 24 years later he is still attending this wonderful church and community.

The responsibilities of the Church Board are provided under the Church Constitution. 2-year Term Susan Oliver Susan became a friend of the Church in 1990 and a Member in At that time she served as the Church Religious Education Assistant for 7 years ( ). She has served on committees for the U to U Auction, the Rummage Sale, Awards, Practical Care Network, and the Flower Committee where she served as chair. She was an advisor for the Junior High groups and a leader in the adult portion of Coming of Age. She currently serves as one of the church Lay Ministers. Her daughters Kelly Hutton, Jenny Miller Flanagan and Sarah Oliver-Miller grew up in the church. Both of her granddaughters Charlotte Bullock and Grace Miller-Hecht were dedicated in our church. She is married to Nick Miller. Susan works for the County of San Diego where she administers contracts and grants for thirteen residential and out-patient alcohol and drug treatment and recovery programs for women.

The responsibilities of the Church Board are provided under the Church Constitution. 3-year Term Katie Jaques Katie Jaques has been a member of First Church since 1967, when she joined along with her mother, Henrietta Misbach ( ). Katie sang in the choir from 1967 until 1986, when she began traveling extensively on business. She returned to the choir after retiring in She has served on the Church Audit Committee from time to time, was a member of Carol Layne's Intern Minister Committee, and has also served on the Marketing Committee for the South Bay campus in Katie is a member of both bell choirs and for several years has worked one day a week as a volunteer receptionist in the Church office. She has taught RE classes since 2008, is an usher, and served as head usher for Winter Solstice, and as a rummage sale cashier. Katie's daughters, Barbara Fraire and Valerie Jaques, and their husbands, Mike Fraire and Mike Goulet, are all Members of First Church and participate by teaching RE classes and helping in the kitchen. Valerie also sings in the choir, plays in one of the bell choirs, and ushers. Katie's grandchildren, Cora (CJ) Setzer, Josh Goulet, and Julian, Aurora, and Vernon Fraire, are all involved in RE and Youth programs. Her oldest grandson, Parker Jaques, is the staff member on duty on Sunday mornings. Both daughters were married at First Church, and a memorial service for Katie's late husband, Vern Jaques, was held here in First Church has been a spiritual home and beloved community for Katie and her family for four generations and more than 40 years. It's high time she stepped up and took a leadership role in the Church.

The responsibilities of the Church Board are provided under the Church Constitution. 3-year Term Mike Moreau Mike Moreau joined First Church in He has been active in the Social Justice Ministry Team since joining the Church. He has attended the Church Leadership Training and the People Improving Communities through Organizing (PICO) training. He was a delegate to the General Assembly in Portland, Oregon. He served on the search committee for the Social Justice Ministry Team Coordinator. He recently attended the Men s Fellowship Renewal Weekend. Mike is a board member of the San Diego Chapter of Parents of Murdered Children. He also serves on the board of The San Diego Victims Assistance Coordinating Council. Mike has a Masters Degree in Social Work and worked as a social service executive for over forty years. He retired as the Executive Director of Kingsley House, the third largest social service agency in Louisiana. He was an adjunct professor at the Tulane University School of Social Work where he taught fiscal management and organizational theory.

The responsibilities of the Church Board are provided under the Church Constitution. 3-year Term Julie Schauble Julie has been a member of First UU Church since Spring Prior to the start of the South Bay campus, Julie was active in volunteering for the book room and at the UUSC coffee table. She was a member of the organizing committee for the South Bay campus and chaired the marketing committee for the campus's launch in She is currently a member of the South Bay Steering Committee and co-chairs the South Bay Social Justice and Service Task Group. She is also currently leading a book discussion at the South Bay campus on Karen Armstrong's The Case for God. Julie first began attending First Church after the 2004 Presidential Election. When the analysis of the election said that values voters had determined the outcome, and she didn't identify with the values being described, she felt the need to seek our a community where people did share her values. Julie works for KPBS Public Broadcasting.

10 Nominating Committee Description: the Nominating Committee shall consist of six Voting Members elected at the Annual Membership Meeting. At least six weeks prior to the Annual Membership Meeting, the Nominating Committee shall announce the names of candidates to be presented for election by the committee and call for nominations by petition during Sunday services and via the Church bulletin. 3-year Term Janet Dray Janet Dray was raised in First Church and, upon moving back to San Diego in 1995, brought her whole family, husband Tom and children Megan and Matt, to worship here. In addition to serving as an Advisor for the 11:30 Junior High Youth Religious Education program for the last five years, she has been involved with the Earth Centered Spirituality Circle, Church Choir, the Rummage Sale, and the Leadership Development Committee. She attended First Church s Leadership Training Weekend in In 2009, First Church recognized Janet and her husband Tom as Unsung UUs, for which they were very grateful. They both treasure the First Church community and the many friends they have made here. In the past Janet was a litigation attorney with Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker in Los Angeles. Since moving back to her hometown Janet has been a stay at home mom and was very involved in her children s schools. More recently, Janet also worked as a grant proposal writer and conducted community needs assessments and national research for several San Diego County Commissions. Her efforts contributed to the establishment of 211, the free social services information & referral service number for San Diego County, as well as The First Five Commission of San Diego s endorsement of Preschool For All. Janet welcomes this opportunity to become even more involved in First Church.

As a single mother, finding a religious community that shared her beliefs was especially important as she believes it truly takes a village to raise a child. The instant comfort she felt lead her to join and shortly co-chair YAO (Youthful and Open Minded), participate in DRUMM and Transforming Community. Julie s First Church experiences have extended to being the South Bay Ministry Coordinator, co-facilitating a JTW retreat and being an RE Leader for the 2s and 3s. Julie s leadership experience in the Early Childhood Education field and degree in Organizational Management and Leadership spark her enthusiasm for helping others in our First Church community. She had the privilege of attending UU conferences focused on multicultural congregations and large church leadership where she was able to view her leadership development through the religious community lens. It is Julie s hope that these experiences will provide the perspective needed in discovering the leadership potential in others.
