July b Jan. d Grave By Camp Gilliam Henry Madison, Jr. was one of the pioneers of Charlotte County. His descendants intermarried with many of the families of Charlotte and Prince Edward Counties and, from there, moved allover the nation, particularly the South. Henry Madison, Jr. (born ca. 1743) was in Charlotte County as early as 1764, but first purchased 400 acres of land on the upper side of Cub Creek on March 4, From that time until his death (May 16,1811), Charlotte was his home. 1/ Reconstructing the Henry Madison family presents the same problems as assembling an enormous, incomplete jig-saw puzzle. This article provides some of the pieces; it is hoped that others can furnish additional items. The Madison antecedents of Henry Madison, Jr. go back in time to the 1620's with saac and Mary Maddeson and their three children: leonard, Thomas, and John, Jr. 2/ They lived in Tidewater Virginia counties such as Gloucester, Rappahannock, King and Queen, Essex, and New Kent. later many of the Madisons were in King William, Caroline, and Orange. The Henry Madison line evolves from John Madison, Sr. and his wife, probably a daughter of James Ambrose, to John Madison, Jr. and his wife, sabella Todd, to Henry Madison, Sr. who resided at various times in St. Stephen's Parish of King and Queen County dnd St. John's Parish in King William, Spotsylvania, and Orange Counties. Henry Madison, Sr. was dead by 1757, leaving two children old enough to name their guardians but too young to be considered adults. guardian his uncle, Roger Madison. Roger apparently had lived in Caroline County as a young man, but moved in the 1750's to Lunenburg and'also spent about eight years in Charlotte.

Roger apparently had lived in Caroline County as a young man, but moved in the 1750's to Lunenburg and'also spent about eight years in Charlotte. n 1777, he moved to land on Childress Creek in Halifax, and remained there LJntil his death in Henry's sister, sabella, chose Tscharner DeGraffenreid as her guardian. 3/ The maternal line of Henry Madison, Jr. is a mystery. His mother was named Elizabeth. Perhaps a clue is sabella's choice of Tscharner DeGraffenreid as guardian. DeGraffenreid (born 1722 in Williamsburg) is listed in family records as having no sisters.,his son of the same name did not marry and was maimed in the Revolutionary War. DeGraffenreid was, too young to be the grandfather of Henry Madison, Jr. The answer, may lie in the families of Tscharner's' wives. Living in Lunenburg and possibly Prince Edward, Tscharner married four times. The last two wives are too late to be relevant to the Madison problem. 4/ His first wife was Mary Baker (married 1742), daughter of Henry Baker and Ruth Chancey (his second wife) of Chowan County, North Carolina. 5/ His second wife was Sarah Lowrey (nee Rust). She was dead by 1765 when DeGraffenreid married Elizabeth Allen Embry. 6/ By 1765, the Madison orphans were grown. Was Henry Madison's mother a Baker or a Rust? Henry Madison, Jr. married Martha White on March 5,,1 764, daughter of John White (born 1712), sheriff of Charlotte County and a vestryman in Cornwall Parish. 7/ Martha's mother may have been Mary Johnson/Johnston, daughter of William,and Ann Brunfiel/Brunfield Johnson of Charlotte and possibly Lunenburg and Brunswick. More information is needed on these family connections. Henry lived his mature years in Charlotte County. From his first land purchase on Cub Creek, H~nry bought and traded land and had the reputation of a successful planter. His inventory showed an estat~ worth more than 2,600 English pounds with twentythree Negro There slaves. 8/ are some hints as to what kind of man Henry Madison was. During the Revolutionary War, Henry was an officer in Captain Barksdale's Company of militia. n religion, he and his family attended 30 family «Locust Grove is the only house still standing with Madison connections.» the Republican Methodist church. Henry's son, Henry () was elected to the Virginia Legislature as an "ardent Democrat" as was his great grandson, R.L. Snell of Charlotte County. 9/ Ten children were born to the union of Henry and Martha White Madison. The dates of their births are not available, but the marriage dates are available from court records, so the children are listed in the chronological order of their marriages. lq/ 1. JAMES MADSON married Susan Edmunds of Brunswick County (May 5, 1813). 10. SUSANAH MADSON married John S. Armistead, brother of Samuel Armistead (Sep. 1, 1818). Henry Madison, Jr. died in May of 1811, while his wife, Martha, lived much longer. Her will was not proved until October 2, / The puzzle is by no means-complete. Some answers are in this article but many are still elusive. Records will yield more clues as they are searched but facts remain with the countless descendants of this pioneer family.
