S.D. Weaver, the Weaver Enigma

This gravestone, in Old Reading Cemetery in Reading Center, New York, reads: S.D. WEAVER of Denver Col DIED Feb. 12, 1876 AGED 58 years Erected by J.W. Ellsworth There are three unusual things about this gravestone that one seldom sees. There is no first name, just the two initials S.D., "of Denver Col" a place where he previously lived, and the name of the person who had the gravestone erected, perhaps because there was no other immediate family member to see it done. This gravestone and the person it documents seem to call out that an injustice needed to be corrected. It certainly appears that John W. Ellsworth was making a statement in his community. John W. Ellsworth (Oct Oct. 8, 1886, Glenwood Cemetery, Watkins Glen, NY) first married Lydia Davis ( Feb. 2, 1844, Old Reading Cemetery), daughter of Alpheus Davis and Thankful Johnson, then later married Lydia Ann Weaver before 1850 (Mar. 27, Nov. 17, 1897, Glenwood Cemetery, Watkins Glen, NY), daughter of James Weaver and Anna Davis. Anna is also the daughter of Alpheus Davis and Thankful Johnson. Lydia Ann Weaver was also the sister of Solomon Dunham Weaver. So John W. Ellsworth's second wife was his niece by marriage. Havana Journal, 16 Oct 1886

Ironically, John W. Ellsworth's gravestone in Glenwood Cemetery is quite simple and not as large or imposing as what he chose for S.D. Weaver. It would appear that S.D. Weaver usually used his two initials instead of a first name, as was done on his gravestone. His grave is in line with the several graves of the Davis family, including John Davis ( ) my wife Linda's 6th great-grandfather, who answered the alarm call for the minutemen and marched from Rutland to Cambridge on April 19, John Davis' son Alpheus is also buried there and he served in the Revolutionary War as well. The second son of James and Anna Weaver, James, and his wife Lydia Luther, are also buried in Old Reading Cemetery. This is a third Lydia mentioned here in the Weaver and Davis families.

From the proximity of S.D. Weaver's grave to these extended family members it would certainly seem that he was related. A large 1857 map of Schuyler County, hanging in the village office in Montour Falls, New York, shows the location of the J. Weaver farm and just down the road to the east is the farm of J. Ellsworth.

The 1840 U.S. Census has an entry for SD Weaver, single age 20-29, living in Riga, Monroe County, New York. The second member of the household is a female age 40-50, possibly his mother. From S.D. Weaver's gravestone he was born about 1818, and he would have been age 22 in The 1850 U.S. Census has a Solomon Weaver, age 35, a peddler, residing in Clarkson, Monroe County, New York. This is another small village about 15 miles from Riga. The entries are: Solomon Weaver, age 35, born in New York (born about 1815) Mrs. Weaver, age 37, born in New York (born about 1813) Amelia Wiley, age 25, born in New York (born about 1825) We find in The Clark genealogy : some descendants of Daniel Clark, of Windsor, Connecticut, , by Emma Lee Walton, 1913: Looking at the 1850 U.S. Census I speculate that Mrs. Weaver was S.D. Weaver's mother. The age makes no sense, but both the ages of S.D. and Amelia Wiley, actually Wylie, are also incorrect. Mary Amelia Wylie and S.D. may not have been married at this time as we only know they married in As Mary Amelia Wylie appears here, Mrs. Weaver cannot be S.D. Weaver's wife, and so the speculation is that she was the mother of S.D. From the Clark Genealogy we know that S.D.'s full name was Solomon Davis Weaver, so it's likely he was a descendant of James and Anna (Davis) Weaver.

The 1860 U.S. Census has an S.D. Weaver, age 42, a deputy sheriff residing in Detroit, Michigan. With him are: Adeline M. Wylie, age 22, born in New York (born about 1838) Bella Weaver, age 10, born in New York (born about 1850) Edward W. Weaver, age 8, born in New York (born about 1852) Mary E Wylie, age 2, born in New York (born about 1858) Eliza Smith, age 17, a servant Frank J. Rush, age 18, a clerk George Jones, age 19, a servant The Wiley (Wylie) names tie the 1850 and 1860 U.S. Census households together. Mary Amelia died 4 November 1856, and so doesn't appear in the 1860 U.S. Census. Instead there is an Adeline M. Wylie and two year old Mary E Wylie, perhaps a relative that stepped in to take care of the young Weaver children. Bella Weaver (Abella Amelia Weaver), born 1850, and Edward W. (Wylie) Weaver, born 1852 are also in the 1860 U.S. Census. Most probably the young Solomon Davis Weaver and Mary Ellen Weaver had died by There is no entry for an older Mrs. Weaver that would be S.D. Weaver's mother, she may have died between 1850 and 1860.

No entry has been found for S.D. Weaver in the 1870 U.S. Census. Some additional mentions of S.D. Weaver have been found. The three clippings above are from the St. Cloud Journal of 1 April 1875, 22 July 1875 and 16 September As this latter clipping of 16 September 1875 shows he was not picking up his mail in St. Cloud, we can conclude he was living there at some point. Additionally as this was only five months before he died, this may indicate when he left Minnesota. In the Denver 1876 City Directory [T-Z], Arapahoe County, Colorado is listed "Weaver, S. D., bds 559 Blake" which confirms the notation on his gravestone. How his time in Colorado fits into his time in Minnesota is unknown. He does not appear in the 1874 or 1875 Denver City Directory.

The Alexandria Post, of Alexandria, Douglas County, Minnesota for Friday, March 17, 1876, page 4, column 1 states Geo. A. Freudenreich received a letter, a few days ago, from Watkins, Schuyler Co. N.Y. informing him of the death of S.D. Weaver, who was so long known among us as a successful canvasser for the sale of farm machinery. He died at Reading Centre, N.Y. of dropsy. George A. Freudenreich was a resident agent of the McCormick company, and from the clipping above S.D. Weaver worked for or with him. This short notice is informative as it confirms S.D. Weaver's death in Reading Center and the cause of death dropsy. Today it would be described as congestive heart failure. This also seems to confirm the earlier census reports of S.D. Weaver being a peddler. As the placement of the grave is nearby other Weaver and Davis family members, S.D. Weaver was almost certainly related to the James Weaver family. Of the men in this family only James the father, age 47 in 1818, Solomon Dunham age 22, James age 20 and Ransom age 18, are of likely age. Hugh was age 14 at this time and it is unlikely he was the father. So with S.D. Weaver having a first name of Solomon, who else can we suspect but Solomon Dunham Weaver. Who the mother was is not likely to be ever known. S.D. Weaver, was born about 1818, two years before Solomon Dunham Weaver married Elizabeth Gamby in Solomon Dunham Weaver was the oldest child of James Weaver and Anna Davis and was age 22 in John W. Ellsworth and Lydia Ann Weaver were then S.D. Weaver's uncle and aunt. John W. Ellsworth saw to it that his late wife Lydia's brother's illegitimate son had a proper gravestone. Solomon Dunham Weaver's (21 Oct 1796, Saratoga Springs, NY - 5 Aug 1886, Branchport, NY) wives were: 1. Elizabeth Gamble (Gamby), m. about 1820, died 8 Jul 1862, buried in Branchport Cemetery. 2. Julia L. (Clark) Richter, b. 26 Oct 1814, m. about 1863, died 27 May 1870, buried in Branchport Cemetery. Married Peter Righter ( ) about Elizabeth Andrews, b. 1835, m. Oct She is in the 1880 U.S. Census, he was listed as age 83 and she was The name Solomon Dunham came from the husband of Nancy Weaver, sister of James Weaver. So he was named after his uncle by marriage. Solomon D. Weaver's children, all with his first wife, are: Myron Holly Weaver, son, b. 21 Mar 1821, d. 3 May 1901, age 79 Llewellyn J. Weaver, son, b. 3 Jul 1823, d. 15 Oct 1861, age 38 Lewis Sherrel Weaver, son b. 15 Dec 1824, d. 16 Jan 1870, age 44,? George Shearman Weaver, son, b. 9 Jul 1826, d. 18 Mar 1907, age 80 Helen Elizabeth Weaver Cheney, daughter., b. 4 Sep 1829, d. 2 Jun 1865, age 36. Solomon D. Weaver, the father, and his first wife Elizabeth Gamble, were obviously quite religious people. From the August 21, 1886 Havana Journal

He was made President of the first board of trustees at the organization of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Branchport, and has been a constant attendant and liberal supporter since its organization. His estimable wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Weaver, who departed this life, in 1862, was the mother of Methodism in this section of Yates county. From various histories and obituaries of Solomon Dunham Weaver we read about his wealth, his home being the finest in town, and his unselfish regard for his community. On the other hand we read that his first born, Myron H. Weaver lived with his grandmother Weed to the age of thirteen. Elizabeth's mother's last name was Weed after she married a second time. This certainly strikes one as strange for such a religious and pious family. That his obituaries never mention his third wife Elizabeth Andrews, a widow, is also a bit unusual.

The home of Solomon D. Weaver is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is an Italianate style dwelling built about Even today it is quite imposing and only his son Myron's home in Branchport compares. Soloman D. Weaver is buried in Branchport Cemetery and his tombstone is the largest in the cemetery, evidently to reflect his status in the community. It should be noted, however, that his stone was probably erected sometime after his death. There is a smaller, quite plain stone, for him as well. The large monument in red granite also contains the names and dates of his first wife Elizabeth, who died in 1862, George and Helen Cheney, his daughter and son-in-law, his sons Llewellyn and Lewis and his second wife Julia, who died in 1870.

He was a highly educated gentlemen, [sic] of distinguished appearance, of a fine family, being a German Swiss, with the right to use the title of baron. He saw service during the Civil war as a lieutenant of Co. A, Hatch s battalion and was a member of Alexandria post G. A. R. Many old friends here will learn with much regret of his death, which came after a long period of ill health. The death notice is given by the St. Cloud Journal Press translated as follows: Mrs. George Adolphe de Freudenreich, Mrs. Adolphe Gautier and her children, Mrs. Eugene de Freudenreich and her daughters, Mrs. Edouard de Freudenreich-Grivel and her daughters, have the honor to let you know of the great loss they have sustained in the death of Mr. George Adolphe de Freudenreich, former Swiss consul to Odessa, their husband, brother, brother-in-law and uncle. 16 The Brandon Echo, Brandon, Douglas County, Minnesota Thursday, December 21, Page 8, col. 3. CAPT. FREUDENRICK [sic] DEAD. A Well Known Minnesotan Dies in Switzerland Personally Known to Old Brandon Residents. Capt. Freudenrick [Freudenreich], for several years general agent for the McCormick Harvester Machine company at Odessa, Russia, died in the city of Berne, Switzerland, Nov. 19th last. He intended to spend the winter at Cairo, Egypt, and had made those preparations when death overtook him. He was well known to old Brandon residents, he at one time owning considerable land at Old Brandon and occupied the farm now owned by Richard Peffer. Capt. Freudenrick held a second lieutenancy of Co. A Hatch s independent battalion. He was with his command from 1862 to 1865, doing both garrison and field duty at Ft. Pembina, Ft. Wadsworth and at various points along the Dakota frontier. We understand he was mustered out with the rank of captain. He was a native of Switzerland and resigned his position as general agent for the harvester company to accept the Swiss consulship at the post of Odessa and held that position until last September when ill health compelled his resignation. [George Adolphe de Freudenreich is the name as given in the Alexandria Post-News regarding the same death.]

Transcribed from microfilm copy of newspaper at Minnesota History Center, St. Paul, MN. Solomon D. Weaver and Family Taken from a newspaper clipping with no date or name, but probably came from The Chronicle Express, printed in Penn Yan, one of the weekly editions in Solomon D. Weaver was born at Saratoga, NY, within a few miles of the celebrated Springs, October 21, He married Elizabeth Gamby, (probably should be Gamble, but here has received the former spelling and pronunciation), who was born at Pine Plains (another source lists White Plains), Dutchess County, NY, June 21, 1800, and was the daughter of the widow Gamby, subsequently Mrs. John Weed. They were married in Benton, February 23, Mr. Weaver's grandfather, Josiah Weaver, and his father, James Weaver, both came from Saratoga, first to Dryden, Tompkins County, and thence to Reading, Steuben County, (now Schuyler), somewhere about , with their families, where they remained until their death. The grandfather died September 24, 1832, aged 88, and the father, June 1864, aged 92. The father had a numerous family, viz: Solomon D., James, Elizabeth, Hugh, Ransom, Nancy, Josiah, Davis, Moses, Lydia, and Orville, (twins), and Alonzo, all of whom reached adult aged but one, and nine were married; but none of them ever because residents of this county except Solomon D. and Moses. Solomon D., before he was married, worked for Messrs. Way & Brown, at the cloth dressing business, in the village of Penn Yan, near Head Street, the works being located on Jacob's Brook. Afterwards at the solicitation of some of the owners and managers of what was known as the "Factory Mill", he because lessee of the carding machines and clothing works, and run them one year as he found them, and the next year added a building, remodeled and renewed the machinery, and run it a second year and made a paying business of it, while the first year was a loss of his whole time. - He says that he was encouraged and advised to go ahead on his own hook, while thus starting in business life as an inexperienced young man, and without means, by such men as John Lawrence, Benjamin Shaw, Aaron Remer, Abner Woodworth and Dr. Joshua Lee, on the promise of their friendly aid and countenance, and they never failed him or allowed him to doubt their sincerity from first to last, although he was often obliged to make heavy drafts on their confidence and faith in him. To such aid in his weakness he attributes his courage in after life to persevere, and to those men he feels that he owes a lasting debt of gratitude. It was about this time that he married and subsequently was engaged with George Shearman in the purchase of one hundred acres of land of John Hall, embracing the water power of Keuka Lake outlet, for $16 per acre, on which they erected two saw mills, and one grist mill with three run of stone, long known as the Shearman & Weaver mill, (on the site of what became Fox's Paper Mill) and which they ran successfully for two years, when they added two distilleries and soon after commenced sinking money, and were finally brought to the verge of bankruptcy within six years thereafter. In 1832 he came to Branchport and here entered into the timber business, buying timber land from the Beddoe Tract, cutting and shipping the timber and selling the land after thus stripping it, and had made a successful business of it.

Julia L Clark Weaver Birth: Oct. 26, 1814 Dutchess County New York, USA Death: May 27, 1870 Julia L Clark was born the daughter of Moses Clark ( ) and his wife Mary Wiggins ( ). Julia Clark married 1. abt 1833 Peter Righter ( ) the son of Pine Plains, Dutchess, New York. They had two children: Clark Righter ( ) and Julia Louisa Righter ( ). Julia Clark married 2 Solomon Dunham Weaver ( ). Clark Righter married Lunette Weaver, neice of Solomon via his brother James. Julia Louise Righter m. an unknown Wheeler briefly. She appears as Julia Louise Wheeler until her second marriage to John Navarre Macomb III. From Aug.21, 1886 Havana Journal Solomon D. Weaver Penn Van Express. Died, at his home in Branchport, Yates county, New York, August 5th, 1880, Mr. Solomon D. Weaver, aged 90 years. Solomon D. Weaver was the oldest son of James Weaver, who moved with his family from Saratoga to Dryden, N. Y., in He died in 1864 at the advanced age of 92 years, leaving a family of twelve children, Solomon D., James, Elizabeth, Hugh, Ransom, Nancy, Josiah, Davis, Moses, Lydia and Orville (twins), and Alonzo, Solomon D. Weaver was born near Saratoga Springs in When quite young he worked for Way & Brown at cloth dressing in Penn Yan, near Head street. A few years later he took the entire charge of the factory mill owned by Lawrence Shaw, Homer, Dr. Lee and others, and managed the business greatly to their satisfaction and profit. Finally he leased the mill of these gentlemen and conducted the business in his own name with remarkable success and ability. In 1820 he was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Gamby, a native of White Plains, Dutchess county, N. Y., who proved to be such a wife and mother as Solomon describes in the book of Proverbs- -- "She stretches out her hands to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her." Soon after his marriage he entered into partnership with George Sherman, Esq., and purchased one hundred acres of land of John Hall, and erected two saw mills and a grist mill, known as the Sherman & Weaver mills, located on Kauka lake outlet, near what is now Foxe's paper mill. About 54 years ago Mr. and Mrs. Weaver came to Branchport, N. Y., where he engaged largely in the timber and lumber business with great success. If this little village had been blessed in the years past with a few more such men of zeal and public spirit as Mr. Weaver, it would now be one of the most thriving towns in Western New York. There was born in this happy home five children, Myron H., Lewellyn J., Lewis S., George S., and Helen E. Only two of this number are now living: Myron H. Weaver, who resides in Havana, N. Y., and has been engaged in the mercantile business with successful results for many years. He is widely known and highly esteemed by his many friends in Yates and Schuyler counties. The other son,

George D. Weaver, resides at Albany, N. Y., and is well known throughout the state as a man of great generosity, rare business ability, a thorough gentleman and pleasant acquaintance. With these necessary qualifications his life could not be other than successful, and win for him a host of warm personal friends. Solomon D. Weaver was always noted for his activity and industry, Whatever he undertook, he pressed its execution with zeal and energy, and he succeeded when others failed because of his indomitable will. "When he willed he willed, you may depend on't, and if he won't he won't so there's an end on't." He has always evinced an unselfish regard for the welfare of the community in which he lived as well us the world at. large. During the late civil war be was the leading spirit among those in this country who aided in sustaining the Government. His large heart and warm sympathy were always with the poor and oppressed. His heart and hand were ever open, and his liberal gilts freely bestowed upon the poor and needy. He was generous to all. His readiness and willingness lo help a friend in need were proverbial. His life was a life of good deeds, which shall live forever and be remembered with pleasure by the many upon whom they were bestowed. These good deeds were not merely from motives of policy, or to gain the good will of others, or to be seen or praised of men, but because he was endowed with a great, and noble nature, and to do good unto others was a fixed principle in keeping with his nature. He respected and honored good and generous acts for their own intrinsic value. His contributions to the various churches of this place and other philanthropic causes were always generous and freely given. He was made President of the first board of trustees at the organization of the Methodist. Episcopal Church at Branchport, and has been a constant attendant and liberal supporter since its organization. His estimable wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Weaver, who departed this life, in 1862, was the mother of Methodism in this section of Yates county, and their home was always the warm and cordial resting place of such men as Rev. F. G. Hibbard, D. D., Rev. Abner Chase and many others of like pious memory. Many who have been warmed by his charity, who have been delivered when in trouble, and sympathized with in hours of sorrow, will have occasion to mourn the loss of one who was a good and true friend to humanity, and who has fallen at his post in the ripeness of years, and with a heartfelt sorrow of his many warm personal friends throughout the large circle of his acquaintances. His funeral was largely attended on Sunday afternoon, August 8th, 1886, at his late residence, the Rev. Mr. Lord officiating.
