For those passed on before us, we sing our praise anew and, walking in their footsteps, would live our lives for you. We praise you for the Baptist, forerunner of the Word, our true Elijah, making a highway for the Lord. The last and greatest prophet, he saw the dawning ray of light that grows in splendor until the perfect day. All praise, O Lord, for Andrew, the first to welcome you, whose witness to his brother named you Messiah true. With Isaiah the prophet, we give you thanks - for the promise of your heavenly banquet, a feast of rich food and well-aged wine; for the strength of your steadfast love, destroying the shroud of sin and shame; for the gift of your saving grace, our long-awaited day of deliverance. 6 Therefore we rejoice in you, singing with the saints of every age: With Mary and Martha, we remember Jesus - his liberating word and healing touch, his saving death and life-giving resurrection, his promised return and glorious realm. With thanksgiving, we remember how Jesus took the bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: This is my body, given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. We remember how he took the cup, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this in remembrance of me. As often as we share this bread and cup, we proclaim the saving death of the living Lord, until he comes in glory to reign. Praise to you, Lord Jesus: Page 6

7 Pour out your Holy Spirit upon us, O God, as we share this feast of bread and juice. Make us one in the body of Christ our Lord and one in the company of your saints. With John the Divine, we look with hope - for the coming of your new creation, a new heaven and a new earth; for an end to suffering and mourning, when every tear will be wiped away; for the fulfillment of your ancient promise on the day when you make all things new. Through Christ, the Alpha and Omega, in the communion of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor are yours, O God, now and forever. Hear us now, as we pray as you taught us to pray, saying: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. 9 Questions for Reflection Tears flow through the readings for All Saints Day in Year B of the Revised Common Lectionary: an Old Testament prophet envisions the day when the Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces (Isa. 25:8); a New Testament visionary promises the faithful that God will wipe every tear from their eyes (Rev. 21:4); even Jesus weeps at the tomb of his friend Lazarus (John 11:35). What do saints have to do with tears? Does faithfulness demand suffering? Does it require a certain sort of compassion for the pain of the world? Household Prayer: Morning As I live this day, O Lord, let me be a sign of your salvation - food for those who hunger, a comfort to those who mourn. This I ask in the name of Jesus, the Alpha and Omega. Amen. Why do I tithe? Because basically it s the right thing to do. The first check of every month is to the church, tithing my pension and social security. Any driving I do for the town or caregiving is included in my giving; also I support my winter church in Florida. For years it s worked - most always running out of month before money! 10 This week at Shelter Island Presbyterian Church: Sunday, November 1 Worship 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 2 Engaging the Text 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 3 Bible Study 9:00 a.m. Election Day Luncheon 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 6 AA 7:30 p.m. Looking Ahead: Sunday, November 8 Worship 10:30 a.m Maureen s Haven Maureen s Haven provides shelter five nights a week in partnership with 16 host congregations and community organizations and over 1,500 individual volunteers providing an estimated 20,000 hours of service each season! Maureen s Haven is an organization that provides shelter to people without during the cold winter months. They organize a number of churches on the east end of Long Island who provide shelter (usually one night of the week). For many years, Southold Presbyterian Church has housed guests on Wednesday nights. Shelter Island Presbyterian Church is going to be partnering with Southold Presbyterian Church to help them out on Wednesday nights during this winter season. If you re curious, a typical evening at Maureen s Haven looks something like this: 4:00 P.M. - Guests congregate at the day center in Riverhead for screening. The screening of guests consists of a breath-a-lyzer test and a visual monitoring of the individual s behavior. There is a check of the person, along with a baggage check for contraband. 6:30 P.M. - Upon arrival to the host site, the guests are welcomed and registered by volunteers. Individuals then proceed to the sleeping areas to claim their bed and put down their personal belongings.= 7:00 P.M. - Volunteers who have been preparing a nutritious, hot dinner for both the guests and volunteers are ready to serve approximately people. Everyone sits down together for dinner and shares this opportunity for socialization. 8:00 P.M. to 10:00 P.M. - After dinner, guests are given the opportunity to get warm clothes, relax, talk, play cards or board games, watch a movie, or just rest. continued on next page. 11 5:00 A.M. - Volunteers (Innkeepers) stay overnight to monitor guests. At day break, a breakfast crew arrives to prepare and serve a substantial, hearty morning meal. A bagged lunch is prepared for each to take with them upon departure. How SIPC Will Be Involved and How You Can Help The people who are Shelter Island Presbyterian Church have covenanted to partner with Southold Presbyterian Church to support Maureen s Haven in the following four ways: 1. Sending a dinner team every 7 weeks - Starting on Wednesday, December 16 th, SIPC will be sending a team to Southold Presbyterian Church every seven weeks (for a total of about three times throughout the season) to help prepare and serve the dinner for that evening as well as to help clean up. This team would gather at SIPC and then travel to Southold and would return later that evening. 2. Preparing the bagged lunches on the third Wednesdays of the month - Starting on Wednesday, November 18 th, SIPC will be preparing the bagged lunches that will be distributed to the guests upon their departure of the host site on Thursday morning. This team will assemble right here at Shelter Island Presbyterian Church to prepare the bagged lunches and then someone will drive the lunches to Southold. This is a great way to get involved if you are unable to physically go to Southold. 3. Spending the night as Innkeeper to monitor the guests - On any Wednesday from November to the end of March, you can join others by spending the night at Southold Presbyterian Church with the guests. 4.Donating toiletry items - there will be bins placed in the SIPC Fellowship Hall closer to the holidays where you can help us donate toiletry items that will be taken to and distributed at Southold Presbyterian Church to the guests at Maureen s Haven. Please note that the options above are not mutually exclusive; you can do one or any combination of the above. Also, please note that volunteering for one date does not mean that you are committing to doing every date.
