FAITHFUL NAVIGATOR S MESSAGE Dear Brother Knights of the 4 th Degree: Hi Karl, This will probably be my last Faithful Navigator s message as I have been filling in for our new Faithful Navigator, Randy Kinsey. We can now welcome him home safely; he has just arrived home from Afghanistan. I requested he tell his brother knights what he was up to over there: I was deployed to Bagram Air Base, Bagram, Afghanistan in support of Special Operations Joint Task Force-Afghanistan (SOJTF-A) as a Logistics Management Specialist. Most my time was spent researching and working out solutions for the unit's readiness and supply problems. We have a direct line to the Depots, Subject Matter Experts, and logistic support originations in Afghanistan, Kuwait and the United States to work out solutions for the unit's issues and to expedite repair parts, supplies and equipment. It's extremely satisfying to work through the issues and see the mission essential equipment or repair part delivered into the hands of the soldiers allowing them to accomplish their mission. In my "free time" I assisted in installing solar shades, erecting tents and constructing sheds, decks and porches, kind of a "Habitat For Heroes making the soldier's living and working conditions just a little bit better. In Peace to Serve, Randy One of our biggest events of the year is the Veteran s Appreciation Dinner, Saturday, November 12 th. Please read the flyer in this month s newsletter for details. The following week, on November 17, is the Memorial Mass, at Columbian Hall. Start time is 6:00 PM and the schola will perform. Father Peter from the Abbey will preside. There will be a potluck to follow. Sir Knight Korey Wessel is the new 4 th Degree Color Corp Commander and Sam Pellegrino remains the Assistant Color Corps Commander. Sir Knight Michael Reffner has volunteered to fill the vacant Captain s position. The Keep Christ in Christmas display at Pellegrino s Italian Kitchen set-up is scheduled for November 19 th. First, meet at Schilter s Tree Farm, 9:00 AM, then travel to Sam s Italian Kitchen to help set up display. Free breakfast served for those who help. There will also be a 4 th Degree Exemplification on November 19 in Seattle. Contact Michael Colosi if you know of anyone interested. Monday, July 3, 2017 is our annual Patriotic Rainiers Baseball game with the schola singing the National Anthem. Please let Mike Colosi know ASAP how many tickets you would like. We have the opportunity to get some all-inclusive party deck tickets this year. Our annual Christmas Party is Thursday, December 15 th. Mark your calendars. And finally, the Annual March for Life will be Tuesday, January 17th, 2017 at St. Martin s University Pavilion. Upcoming meeting dates: No business meeting in November, the December business meeting Thursday, December 22 nd. It has been my pleasure and honor to serve as your Faithful Navigator. I will be assisting our new FN and Captain. We have a great group of men, each bringing something different to the table. God Bless you all. Respectfully, Karl L. 5 2016 TOOTSIE ROLL DRIVE AND INFO ABOUT MORNINGSIDE Brothers All! I want to thank all the Brother Knights, Squires, wives and family members for their help over the two weekends we held our annual Tootsie Roll drive. We had some scheduling problems and location issues but we still raised just over $7, so we should be proud of what we could do and all the Non-Profits that will benefit from our labor. Speaking of Non-Profits - please see the write up below featuring Morningside and the great work they do for so many people in our community. Thank you and God bless Darren E. Johnson Tootsie Roll Chairman Council 1643 District Deputy - District 4 Special Olympics State Chairman Washington State Council Knights of Columbus Morningside is dedicated to advancing the employment and self-sufficiency of people with disabilities. We formed in 1963 to provide an alternative to institutionalizing people with disabilities at a time when there were no other options for families. In the 1990s, Morningside led the efforts in Washington State to move away from sheltered workshops to integrated community employment. Today, we strive to have all of our clients in integrated employment earn a living wage. In 2015, we served over 800 individuals experiencing disabilities, and placed 193 people in jobs in their communities a milestone for the organization, and a transformational change for each individual who achieved their dream of employment. Morningside operates in six counties of Western Washington, including Pierce, Thurston, Mason, Grays Harbor, Lewis, and Clallam. People with disabilities face much greater challenges in the workplace than those without. These challenges come not only from their individual disabilities, but from systemic beliefs such as the myth that people with disabilities can t do the job. The American Society for Training & Development reports that the number one barrier for people with disabilities entering the workplace is, attitudes at all corporate levels. As a result, people with disabilities have poverty and unemployment rates twice those of the rest of the population. To change this statistic, we offer a variety of job placement and training services including discovery, coaching, internships, and peer to peer support. Our staff works one on one with clients at every phase of their quest for meaningful employment. Many individuals come to Morningside to identify their vocational goals. When clients decide upon a career path, Morningside collaborates with employers to find the optimal job for our clients, jobs that fit their skills, abilities, and interests, while filling a need for the employer. 6 MORE INFO ABOUT MORNINGSIDE In 1992 Morningside began offering High School Transition services. Four separate programs comprise Morningside s High School Transition approach: School-to-Work, Project SEARCH, Job Club, and the Summer Youth Internship Program. In School-to-Work students are assessed and interests identified. Transition coordinators work with employers in the community to develop internship opportunities, with the goal of employment when the student completes high school. Project SEARCH is our internship program in partnership with The Evergreen State College which allows students to explore three internships on the campus of The Evergreen State College during the academic year. Our third program, Job Club, is open to all area high school students with disabilities, and meets weekly on the campus of South Puget Sound Community College. Morningside s newest Transition project is our Summer Youth Internship Program in partnership with Pac Mtn Workforce Development Council. During the six-week summer session, students develop resumes, cover letters, receive work assessments, and participate in a paid internship that aligns with their interests. Page -6-

KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS Once again this year, Brother Knight Sam Pellegrino, along with a group of volunteer Knights and Squires, will build the Keep Christ in Christmas display on the patio of Pellegrino s Italian Kitchen, 205 Cleveland Ave. in Tumwater. Prior to Thanksgiving, we will need 10 trees ranging in height from 6-12 feet. We will also need 6 bales of straw. Set up of trees is scheduled for Saturday, November 19 th. We will need all the help we can get from Squires and Knights! That morning, Sam will provide warm food and beverages for the cold and hungry volunteers. All of the twinkling net lighting and some of the wiring will again have to be replaced; all statues are in need of re-painting, the big angel and the deer figurines are becoming very worn, not to mention the dramatic increase in the cost of electricity. Your financial help with this project would be greatly appreciated. Tax deductible contributions can be made to the Knights of Columbus and mailed to GK Mike Colosi at PO Box 3511, Lacey, Checks should be labeled Keep Christ in Christmas Project. Thank you in advance for your generous support. Page -9-

A NOTE FROM DANI SAULEY REGARDING SHOW THE TRUTH TOUR Dear People of faith, Although I ve been part of our outreach at Show the Truth since its beginning, this is the first time I have written to you. In the beginning, I was afraid to stand in public, speaking for the unborn and their mothers. This fear, over some time, was replaced by strength knowing in my her that I was doing what I should do. Many times I have seen women look at what we are doing and come to the realization that what they are about to do is a terrible thing. Some of these girls came to live with us. This wasn t always easy, but in the end a human life was saved, and the spiritual life of the baby s mother (and sometimes the father) was also improved. I remember the first time a girl came up to me and said I can t do that to my baby Will you help me? What an awesome experience! I also remember one of our young people, who was on tour with us, experience the same thing two days before her 16 th birthday. She was filled with pure joy. Women have come up to us with babies thanking us for what we are doing. We really can t take the credit; it is by God s grace! As a chaperone I heard Pope John Paul II tell over a half million young people in Denver: The Gospel of Life needs you. Go into the streets and do not be afraid. Please consider joining us on our tour in November. We leave on Monday, November 7 th and return on Friday, November 11 th. Dani Sauley Olympianmom6@aol.com Page 12 of 20

Seeing Each Through the Eyes of Jesus Solves the World's Problems. Deacon Harold Burke-Severs [Left]: Deacon Harold Burke-Severs [Right: L-R] Dr. David Olwell, Dean of Engineering and Faculty Advisor for St. Martin s Council, Edward Barton, Chief Financial Officer for St. Martin s, Deacon Harold Burke-Severs, and St. Martin s President Dr. Roy Heynderickx Council 1643 supported an additional presentation by Deacon Harold Burke-Severs at the St. Martin s University Council at Cebula Hall on Wednesday September 28 th in the evening. The presentation was attended by many students, several professors and Benedictine Clergy as well as the St. Martin s University President Dr. Roy F. Heynderickx. Deacon Harold began by saying that he was born in Newark, N.J. and attended a Benedictine grammar and high school. The quality of his education permitted him to gain a full academic scholarship to Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. After graduating and completing his Deacon training, he worked at Portland University while Dr. Roy Heynderickx was president of the school. He then focused upon the differences between Liberals and Catholics in their perspective about the world. He talked about the Trinitarian views of Liberals of me, myself, and I as being different from the Catholic Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. For the liberal, they are their own god. Their primary definition of what is valuable is based upon feelings, but their feelings can change if they think. For the Catholic, God is real and we are his servants out of gratitude for all He has done for us. And Catholic s primary definition of what is valuable is the teachings of God made to us through the Bible and Church traditions. God s precepts do not change based upon feelings and are reinforced through proper thinking. Deacon Harold suggests a strategy for finding common ground between Liberals and Catholics by introducing facts and truths into the discussion. However, he pointed out that usual discussions between Liberals and Catholics can easily deteriorate into name calling and worse. Before it gets to that point, he suggests that in order to achieve this facts and truths based discussion, we need to look at others through the eyes of Jesus so that we can treat them with personal dignity while at the same time faithfully expressing God s truths. He gave multiple examples of how he had to endure insults and screaming while treating Liberal with kindness in order to begin a fact based discussion. The presentation then turned to how to discuss the truths and facts about abortion. 1. Abortion kills a child: Liberals will say it is only a piece of unfeeling fetal tissue. The Catholic can say that humans have names for all stages of life from baby, toddler, pre-k to adult and then the Liberal word Old. Just as accurately, there is the beginning stages of a life as a fertile egg or zygote or broadly fetal tissue, a beating heart embryo, then a primi or a full term baby. All are stages and names for a human person. These points usually are Abortions are needed to support Page 13 of 20

embryonic stem cell research which only causes cancer: Liberals usually raise this point about embryonic stem cell research is needed to improve health. But they are usually ignorant or deceptive about the fact that no research in disease cures has been successful using embryonic stem cells because the DNA from another person causes cancer in the patient needing the cure. On the other hand, adult stem cell research has netted over 73 significant cures and more are occurring daily. The primary reason is that using the DNA of the patient to create stem cells that are converted to heal diseases do not cause cancer. As an example of this fact, a recent research grant program made by the State of California had 10 winners which proposed only adult stem cell research. Only three proposed embryonic stem cell research. Additionally, Deacon Harold again emphasized that no embryonic stem cell research has produced a successful medical cure that could be approved by the FDA because they all produced cancer or other devastating side effects. 2. In vitro fertilization kills dozens of babies so a couple can have one baby while Natural Fertilization kills no babies: This fact was least known to the audience. The Catholic Church supports a less expensive, natural fertility program called NaPro 1 Technology. It is over 85% successful and does not kill a child in the process. Most are not aware that the In Vitro fertilization model requires a large number of eggs that are inseminated with only a few being implanted. Additionally, if more than one of those eggs begins to grow, the doctors council the patient into selective early abortion of the unwanted children. A fuller explanation of the process of In Vitro 2 fertilization is shown below, though Deacon Harold did not expand upon this topic. Discussions after Deacon Harold s presentation were very inspirational with most staying to talk for a long period of time telegraph.co.uk/science/2016/04/26/bright-flash-of-light-marks-incredible-moment-life-begins-whens/ Only one or two of these children will be permitted to live through In Vitro fertilization process The video explains that this explosion of sparks does not take place in other animals eggs and sperm when the researchers have performed In Vitro fertilization. Council 1643, Knights of Columbus is pleased to announce the Knight of the Month as Brother Darren Johnson. Darren has been a member of the council since only March of 2011, (and he almost joined the Knights before he was done with RCIA.
