3 A Message from the desk of Fr. Art The four principles of the Knights of Columbus, Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism highlight the identity and purpose of this Catholic men s organization that has existed and served the church and society over these many years. It is likely not by chance that Charity lies at the top of the list. Furthermore, charity includes giving, but it is also more than that. When considering how to give, Jesus and the scriptures hold before us some clear direction. Jesus tells us that when we give, we are not to let our left hand know what our right hand is doing we are to keep our deeds of mercy secret. Elsewhere in the scriptures we read that we are to give without counting the cost. Carrying out these teachings can be difficult because we enjoy receiving credit for what we have done. But, it seems, that Jesus would rather that our actions speak for themselves. Our focus is to be on the person who will be lifted up by the kindness shown to them. A broader understanding of charity would also have us pay attention to how we can grow in kindness and gentleness. Most days we relate to other people family, co-workers, friends and those we do not know. A simple smile, a caring word, a helping hand an affirming comment are all ways that reflect the principle of the Knights of Columbus that lies at the top of the list. God bless each of you for the many ways you are the presence of Jesus to others through your active participation in the Knights. Message from Dist. Deputy Mitch O Neill I encourage all Grand Knights, Deputy Grand Knights, and Financial Secretaries to attend the Leadership Seminar on July in Grand Island to help get our councils off to a good start this fraternal year. Also, the Supreme Faith In Action program, which replaces the Surge With Service program, will be presented. Five (5) copies of the Fraternal Leader Success Planners will be sent to the Financial Secretary of your Council. Bring your copy to the Leadership Seminar. Congratulations to Kearney for 1 new member initiated on June 24 in Grand Island. Be sure to invite all new members to participate in your next charitable activity. A Major Degree (Admissions, Formation, and Knighthood) will be scheduled in Kearney in the Fall. I will not have a confirmed date until after the Leadership Seminar. Also, I am to have an Admissions Degree every month in my District. Contact me for a preferred date for it to be held at your council, or I will assign a date for you. I will be in contact with the Grand Knights to decide when our District meeting will be held in August. All Council Officers are invited to attend that meeting as well. 7 Field Agents Message <Michael Scholz,FICF John Vanderbeek, FICF> Serving Last Named A-K Serving Last Na Our Guarantees Set Us Apart Knights of Columbus life insurance offers something precious few other financial products can guarantees. As long as you pay your premiums, the policy proceeds will be there for your beneficiaries should something happen to you. That s peace of mind, and that s what we offer with every product in our portfolio. We guarantee the cash value in your whole life policies will be there. We guarantee the rates on your term insurance. We guarantee the rate and your principal in our retirement annuities. On top of those product guarantees, I guarantee that I will offer professional, highquality service that you would expect from our organization. Our Order is among the highest rated life insurers in North America. AM Best has rated the Knights of Columbus A++, Superior for 40 consecutive years. It s a testament to our track record for excellence and security. I would suggest that a principal reason that we were able to achieve those accolades is because we remain steadfastly committed to the vision of Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney by providing life insurance by brother Knights for brother Knights. That commitment is an essential core value of the Knights of Columbus, and our core values permeate all levels of our organization. We pledge to serve our brother Knights, and their families, according to our Golden Rule: In all my professional relationships, I pledge myself to the following rule of conduct: I shall, in light of all conditions surrounding those I serve, render that service which, under the same circumstances, I would apply to myself. Let s talk soon to discuss how our products can bring that peace of mind to you and your family. Michael Scholz,FICF michael.scholz@kofc.orgmed L-Z
8 Food for thought Back in biblical times everyone had only one name such as Joseph, John and etc. When and why did we go with two or three names? In the early years of the Middle Ages, most people in Europe lived in small farming villages. Everyone knew his neighbors, and there was little need for last names. But as the population expanded and the towns grew, a need arose to find ways to differentiate between two people who shared the same first name. Because the British were among the first Europeans to settle in North America, many modern American surnames can be traced back to medieval England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. Common adjectives used as bynames often referred to size - such as Little, Short, or Long or to hair color or complexion such as White, Black, or Red (which evolved into Reed). Sometimes, an adjective was combined with a noun to form a byname, like Longfellow or Blackbeard. Names such as Stern and Stout (meaning stouthearted, not fat) described temperament, while Drinkwater implied someone with a powerful thirst. John Peacock must have been rather vain! A name might also refer to social status, such as Squire, Knight, or Bachelor. And Palmer described a pilgrim who had returned from the Holy Land. (It was traditional for such pilgrims to bring back a palm as a sort of souvenir.) Names derived from the Gaelic tongue are less easily deciphered by modern English-speakers: Cameron means crooked nose, Kennedy means ugly head, and Connolly means valiant.
