The Explorer A Publication Of The Kansas Knights of Columbus VOL. 23 NO. 1 January 2019 HAPPY NEW YEAR! When Father McGivney founded the Order, he wanted it to be a society of Catholic men, established in every Parish, supporting the Priest in his vocation and mission. This gives every Brother Knight an opportunity to grow in holiness while contributing to his parish, community and security for his family. My Brother Knights, our purpose is very clear. As leaders of our organization, we must remember that our purpose, first and foremost, is support of the Catholic Church. This includes, but is not limited to, evangelization and participation in operations of our Parishes. The Faith in Action program gives many examples, including the RSVP program, Silver Rose Program, Holy Hour program, the traveling Religious Icon program, Family Prayer Night program, and the Kansas State Councils own Religious Education program. At the Mid-Year Meeting in Wichita in December, our meetings focused around Membership and these Faith in Action Programs and many more. Following are more points discussed in the meeting and I would ask each of you to take these points to your Council and discuss them at your January Council Officer and/or Business meeting(s). All are important for success this fraternal year, as well as the future of Knights of Columbus as a whole. On November 2, 2018, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson, while addressing the State Deputies at the Mid-Year State Deputy Meeting in Houston, delivered a speech conveying a Sense of Urgency for our Order to practice the new Faith in Action program which promotes Building the Domestic Church While Strengthening Our Parish. He discussed the Challenges Facing the Church. He said I can tell you that every bishop and priest in the United States is feeling the effects of what s happening. They are questioning what s going to happen in the coming year, and they are looking for those Catholics who are going to stand up and move the Church forward. And that s who the Knights of Columbus must be this year. We must be those men, we must be those leaders, and we must go forward. As council leaders, we should be looking at our councils and the path that is being followed and assess whether your council is following the Faith in Action Program which is designed to support our parishes and spiritual life of our members. The Supreme Knight also noted that through the Faith in Action program; Strengthening Families in Faith is paramount for our organization. Part of the design is to help families stay together by praying together. Integrating our families into parish life is one way of helping families and parishes. There was much discussion at our Mid-Year meeting around membership. Important in our councils is building a culture of recruiting. Online membership is one of the preferred methods for entry into the Knights of Columbus. The Supreme council is also looking for ways STATE DEPUTY S MESSAGE to cut down on barriers of entry for new members. One way that is being investigated by Supreme is a paperless Form #100 submission. The goal is for every council obtaining the coveted Star Council Award for the Fraternal Year. With this effort, we should be asking every available Catholic man to participate in the works of the Order. We are well on our way to achieving the membership goals that Supreme has established for us this fraternal year. Let us move forward towards obtaining those goals. We should continue to Welcome one Another as Christ has Welcomed You. To obtain this award it is important to understand the Safe Environment Compliance initiatives. It is critical that each council is compliant by their grand knight, program director, family director, and community director taking the training through Supreme. If a council sponsors a Columbian Squires Circle all circle counselors must complete the training. Please timely comply with the notification that you will receive if you hold any of these offices. This youth protection training is necessary to maintain your office in the council. I wanted to update everyone on the Ultra Sound machine progress. The Knights had the honor to participate in the blessing of the new machine in Beloit, December 18th. Checks and the final paperwork have been completed for the Olathe Ultra Sound Machine. Dedication for this machine should be in January. Life Director Matt Micek has also just been informed that the funds for the Ottawa mobile unit have reached its goal. This machine is scheduled for dedication in January or February. This is very good news. Of course, the thanks go out to all our brother Knights across the state that has graciously contributed. The State Council is eagerly working with Council #8488 Manhattan and #1832 Manhattan Seven Dolors in their preparations for the upcoming State Convention in Manhattan May 2 5, Grand Knights should be receiving convention packets in the mail this month. Make sure that your council sends two delegates to the convention. Let s make the 118th Convention the best ever! I would also like to announce that Western Kansas General Agent George Spinelli is moving to Missouri to head up an agency. Darin Reed will become the Western Kansas General Agent as of January 1, We congratulate George on all his hard work over the last 23 years. He will truly be missed. We wish him well on his new endeavors. Also on behalf of all the Knights in Kansas I would like to extend Darin our support in his new role and responsibilities. Vivat Jesus, Dale A. Weber State Deputy

STATE CHAPLAIN S MESSAGE Fr. Jarett Konrade, State Chaplin What is Apologetics? Sometimes the best way to define something is to first understand what it is not. I once had a Catholic professor who didn t like apologetics because he perceived it to be a defense of the Catholic faith, and he didn t believe the Catholic Church needed to be defended, (and certainly not by some punk college student) as though the Church cannot defend herself, as she has done for 2000 years. In some sense he was correct. Jesus tells us in scripture that the gates of hell shall never prevail against His Church, we can be confident of that; however apologetics is not acting as a defender of the Church for the Church s sake. Rather, it is learning to defend the faith of the Church, for our own benefit, for the benefit of our fellow Catholics, as well as for the good of those who would attack or even ask sincere questions about the Church. Apologetics is not apologizing for being Catholic, even though we can tend towards that, especially in the sacrificial seasons of the Liturgical year. Oh, I guess we are going to have to change our Friday lunch plans, since Jon the Catholic is coming along. Lastly, apologetics is not simply something for recent Protestant converts to do in order to make a living in the Catholic Church. No, apologetics is fulfilling the command of St. Peter, when he wrote in his first letter, Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope but do it with gentleness and reverence. Apologetics is giving a reasoned explanation for your Catholic faith. Is it important? Extremely. I am sure almost all of us know a Catholic who left the Church because they were unable to answer some of the most basic questions about the Catholic faith. Often, we as Catholic have not been prepared to answer common objections from our Protestant brothers and sisters about Catholic practice and doctrine and are therefore filled with doubt in the truth of the Catholic Church. Aren t priests responsible to teach more apologetics? Yes, and so are you. The Second Vatican Council in its Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity said, This sacred Synod earnestly exhorts laymen and women, each according to his natural gifts and learning, to be more diligent in doing their part to explain and defend Christian principles. That is apologetics; and we are all responsible to do it. Obviously not all of us are to teach classes in our home diocese or at our parish, but at least at home with our children and grandchildren. So often, Catholics have been taught or learned through experience the what, but are unable to explain why we do what we do or believe what we believe. Would you be able to explain to a fellow Catholic or a Protestant brother or sister about the biblical foundations for intercessory prayer through the saints? Or why priests are called Father? Would you have the knowledge to pose a question to a Protestant brother or sister why they believe the Bible to be the only source of authority? Or why they don t pray for the dead as St. Paul did? If the answer is no, then let us pray and discern how God is desiring to lead us to first be students and then apologists in our homes, in our councils, in our parishes, or maybe even in our diocese s. 2

STATE MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR S MESSAGE Patrick W. Burnett, State Membership Director Welcome to the start of a new calendar year, but the second half of the fraternal year. Over the years Kansas has become known as a second half team. I am not a fan of this statement, but it is true. Typically, our state does 65% of its recruiting during this time of the year. If your council has not held a church drive, or recruited a new member, now is the time! The Supreme Council has recently introduced a new tool in helping local councils recruit new members. The Prospect Landing Page has been designed and is now available for your council s use. Here is how it works. Your council, with help from Supreme, can set up a personalized from your council, to be sent to a potential new brother knight when they supply their name and address. The minute that potential candidate submits those two things, they will automatically receive that personalized message that your council crafted. This makes follow up from church drives, fish fry s, and any parish event more efficient and effective. The council then is notified of this candidate and is supplied with their contact information to further advance them into the Order. It is simple, effective, and FREE to your council. The state staff have been trained in the operation of this new tool and can help you in setting up your council s landing page. As you attend District Meetings you will get the information that your council needs to get started with its own Prospect Landing Page. Supreme Council remains focused on advancing the technology of the Order and this latest development will only help organize your council s recruitment efforts. Use this new tool now and remember to Welcome One Another As Christ Has Welcomed You! STATE PROGRAM DIRECTOR S MESSAGE Gary L Wondra, State Program Director January marks the beginning of the second half of our fraternal year and there are many activities for councils to conduct this month. Councils should be hosting their Free Throw contest before January 31st. Councils are asked to hold a Pro Life baby shower during the month. The 46th annual March for Life event will be held in Washington DC on January 18th and the March for Life march will be held in Topeka on January 22nd. Knights of Columbus members are encouraged to attend these marches. The Marion Icons also continue to travel across the state. The month of January is also an excellent time for councils to evaluate their achievements for the first half of the fraternal year and set new goals for the second half. A topic of conversation at your Mid-Year District meetings will be the Faith in Action programs. Has your council implemented these new programs? I would like to take this opportunity to remind all councils of the four required programs that must be completed to achieve the Columbian Award. Your council must also be youth compliant to receive the Columbian Award. District Deputies will be assisting councils in tracking these requirements. I encourage all councils to ask any questions they may have and not wait until the end of the fraternal year to complete these requirements. The Annual Survey of Fraternal Activities (Form # 1728) is a requirement for the coveted Star Council Award. Although the deadline for receipt of the form at the Supreme Council is January 30, 2019, it would be of great assistance to have it there by January 15, This will eliminate the need for follow up phone calls to track down the forms. This form can be found on the supreme website. The preferred method is to submit this form online and not to mail it to Supreme. Remember to a copy of the form to your district deputy and to the State Deputy. The information on this form assists the Supreme Council in providing documentation to retain our non-profit status, therefore it is VERY important. The Special Olympics (form # 4584) is also due to Supreme by January 31, This is another important form that every council should submit as it affects the amount of additional funding that is given to our local Special Olympics program from Supreme. January is also a good time for councils to begin making scrapbooks if they have not already done so. Every council in the state has had or will complete a worthwhile project this fraternal year. Councils are encouraged to submit a scrapbook in each of the four programming areas: Faith, Family, Community and Life. The deadline to submit the scrap books to the appropriate director is April 1st. However, councils are encouraged to submit them soon after the project is completed. The scrapbooks are judged on the project itself and not the quality of the scrapbook submitted. FAITH John Schulz Vocation Poster Contest Faith Director John Schulz encourages every council to engage the youth in their parish by participating in the Vocation Poster Contest. This year s theme is: Come Follow Me. Councils should hold their contest in January or February. The winning council poster in each grade level must be received by your District Deputy no later than March 15th. Additional guidelines are available in the Program and Membership Guide. These guidelines must be followed to prevent a poster from being disqualified. Adopt a Seminarian Faith Director John Schulz reports that 189 councils and 29 assemblies have reported pledges of $195,920. We are off to a GREAT start but there are still several councils that have not submitted their pledge cards. If your council has not submitted a seminarian pledge, please contact John to get the names of seminarians that still need support. All councils are asked to fulfill their pledges to their seminarians as soon as possible. Councils should encourage their seminarians with cards, letters, s, care packages and phone calls. John reminds all councils to continue praying for all seminarians. Spiritual Reflection program Don t forget that required program in the Faith category is a Spiritual Reflection program. The definition of a reflection is broad but should be a day-long event at minimum and could possibly encompass an entire weekend. Councils can attend religious retreats and days of reflection organized by other groups. Council attendance should be significant with at least 10 percent or minimum of 10 members attending the event. Continued on page 4 3

Religious Education - Barney Wolters Religious Education Fund Raffle Ticket sales were a great success again this year. Religious Education Fund Chairman Barney Wolters reports $194,000 was raised. The Raffle drawing was held at the Mid-Year meeting on December 8th. A list of winners was sent to all grand knights. A Special Thanks to all Brother Knights for their hard work in selling the tickets. Because of this great effort, over $85,000 was dispersed for Catholic Education in Kansas this year. FAMILY - Paul Haverkamp Family Life - Congratulations to every council who has been selecting a Family of the Month. It s time to begin thinking of who your council may want to select as the Family of the Year. In doing so, you may want to consider the stronger members of your council, parish, and community. Remember, when selecting the Family of the Year, the husband must be a member of the Knights of Columbus. If he is not a member, this would be a great opportunity to hold an admission degree to bring him into our Order. Once the application has been completed request the family to review the Family of the Year form, and add to it. Make sure the forms are completed and sent to your district deputy no later than March 10th. Your district deputy has a short period of time to make his selection before making sure the paperwork is sent to the Diocesan judge for your area. If you are late with your paperwork, your council family won t be judged, and may have lost an opportunity to be the State Family of the Year. The State Family of the Year and Diocesan winners will be recognized at the Kansas State Convention in Manhattan, Kansas. Council Activities - Athletic Events - Tom Smith The 2019 Knights of Columbus State Bowling Tournament will be held February 16th & 17th, 23rd & 24th and March 2nd & 3rd. It will be held at the Seneca Bowl at 1909 S Seneca, Wichita, Ks. This year s tournament is hosted by Derby Council If you haven t received information regarding the tournament contact Dave Janner at djanner27@gmail.com or PO Box 9214 Shawnee Mission, Ks If your council is interested in hosting the 2020 State Bowling Tournament you need to send the request in writing to me by January 21, Minimum requirements are at least 24 lanes and adequate hotel accommodations. The 2019 State Golf tournament will be played July 27th and 28th at the Salina Municipal Golf course and will be host by Salina Council 601. The 2019 Knights of Columbus State Sporting Clay Shoot will be held Saturday April 27th. The tournament will be hosted by Clonmel-Schulte Council 3114 at a sporting clay facility in Augusta. If you have any questions, contact Tom Smith at or council@kansas-kofc.org COMMUNITY Doug Wietharn Has your Council completed or made plans for the required Helping Hands or featured Global Wheelchair Mission and Habitat for Humanity community programs this fraternal year? If you have completed one of these activities now is a good time to work on your scrapbooks so that they can be completed and sent in by the April 1st deadline. If not, plans need to be made soon in order to complete these activities by the end of the fraternal year. Each council should take the opportunity to 4 see if they can find an individual or another organization in your community that can be helped through one of these activities. You do not have to organize an activity at the council level alone, you can find an outside organization and volunteer a helping hand with them as well. Contact Community Director Doug Wietharn at community@kansas-kofc.org if you have any questions. Website Update Doug Wietharn Is your council receiving messages from the State Council? The State Council sends s concerning sickness or death notices of current and past state personnel, important messages from the Supreme Council, which includes Webinar and Training opportunities for officers and members, pending legislative issues and important messages from the Bishops of Kansas. addresses are never sold or shared, and messages are only sent with the approval of the State Deputy. If your grand knight does not wish to share his personal account with the State Council, perhaps your council could consider creating a council address using one of the many free services available today. Therefore, when the grand knight changes there is no need to notify the State Council of an address change. An example of this type of could be kofc and the council number like kofc1234@gmail.com. Please contact Doug Wietharn at webmaster@kansas-kofc.org if you have any questions. Fraternal Heath Ohl Fraternal Chairman Heath Ohl would like to thank all councils who have submitted their monthly Knight of the Month. I know many councils take part in this effort but many more are not taking up this cause. If your council has not been submitting their Knight of the Month, they can their past Knight of Month to fraternal@kansas-kofc.org. Please remember to let your Knights know that their efforts of dedication and commitment to the Order are appreciated. Also, at a time when dues are being collected, please take the extra time to contact every knight in your council. Inquire about how they are doing, how their families are doing and invite them to a meeting or function. Publicity Heath Ohl Publicity Chairman Heath Ohl would like to remind everyone to follow the Kansas Knights on He also encourages all councils to look at the Knights of Columbus supreme site for the Publicity and Public Relations Guide. It can be found at: We all are called to use this guide to learn how to share the great work we do with Church and community which is our best kept secret which we need to share with others. By sharing our great works, it has been shown to increase the number of new men who can join the Order and help us continue our work for others. I believe you will find this tool useful in helping us share the word with all. Pennies from Heaven - Dustin Hern Pennies from Heaven Chairman Dustin Hern would like to thank all the councils and individuals that have donated to the hurricane disaster relief this year. These donations totaled over $15,000 and will be credited to the council s Pennies from Heaven account. All councils

should be looking forward to the State Convention to be held in Manhattan in May. A highlight of the convention is always the Pennies from Heaven live auction held on Saturday night at the convention. Dustin is looking for donated items for the Country Store and Pennies from Heaven Live and Silent Auctions. If you have a member who is talented in woodworking or crafts items, encourage them to make an item to donate. The sale price of these items will be credited to your council s Pennies from Heaven donation. Please contact Dustin as soon as possible so he can plan accordingly. If you can, write a brief description about it and it to pennies@kansaskofc.org. There will also be some great items for the Pennies from Heaven raffle. Youth Activities Kevin Baalmann Free Throw Contest All youth ages 9 to 14 years old are invited to participate in the Free Throw Championship again this year. Council Free Throw Contests should be held early in January with Districts being Jan. 27th through Feb. 10th. All regionals are scheduled for February 17th and the State Contest is set for March 3rd in Salina. Be sure the Official Contest Rules from Supreme are followed - no exceptions. Meet with your judges and scorers ahead of time to insure everyone is well prepared. Immediately after the contest, complete the Council Winner Free Throw Report and forward it to your district deputy as soon as possible. At the same time, be sure to file the Form FT-1 participation report with Supreme and our State Deputy by January 31st. It is found on the Kansas K of C web site, or In the past three years, six of our statewide winners have also won the international contest. LIFE Matthew Micek "God is Good" was the response of Alice Thompson of Heart Choices pregnancy clinic in Beloit, Kansas as the Knights installed the twelfth ultrasound machine in Kansas. On December 18th, representatives from the State council, Beloit Knights and the surrounding community celebrated mass lead by Fr. Damian Richards. Immediately following, Heart Choices hosted an open house, showing visitors the pregnancy clinic and explaining the services they offered. "This ultrasound machine is portable and will service our 4 locations" said Alice. Heart Choices sees about 60 clients a month, utilizing a variety of their services. Rachel Ducote, program director said, "you'd be surprised, we meet with a lot of father's for a variety of reasons," then going on to talk about the parenting classes they offer. The staff at Heart Choices all agree that their long term goal is to add a mobile ultrasound to their services. It's an exciting time for the ultrasound initiative in Kansas as we will be installing new machines very soon in Olathe and a mobile unit in Ottawa. There continues to be a great need for our assistance and opportunities to place more of these machines exist. Brother Knights, thank you for your continued support and dedication to our life-saving work! As January is upon us, I encourage the Knights across Kansas to double-up their commitment to our firm Culture of Life stance by attending the Pro-Life rally in Topeka on January 22nd. "Regardless of your political leanings, there is one undeniable fact about the Governor-Elect: she is staunchly pro-abortion," says Past State Deputy Pat Winchester. I encourage all councils to consider joining us as we show our government leaders that we relentlessly defend life in all stages and conditions. More information about this event is posted on our website at I also invite all councils to participate in the annual Pro-Life Baby Shower. This annual event was kicked off at the mid-year meeting in Wichita with almost $900 in donations being distributed to the 4 diocese in Kansas. Council's need to be aware of the programs required for the Columbian Award this year. The Novena for Life program is required for council's to qualify for the Award. Anyone needing more information can access program material athttp://kofc.org/un/en/programs/life/index.html. Remember, there are many reports coming due April 1st. Among them are the Life report form and the Evangelium Vitae award application. Grand Knights can make submitting these forms easy by taking a photo of them and texting them to Life Director Matt Micek who's contact information is in the form. As one last thought, remember that need knows no season and the Church needs your time, talent, and treasure year-round. God Bless! Commitment to Humanities (Tootsie Rolls) - Lino Munoz Worthy Grand Knight s, did your council host a Tootsie Roll Drive? Did your council file the Tootsie Roll Report! This report was due December 15th. To those councils that have submitted the report, thank you, to those that have not, please take time to file it immediately. Send the original copy to State Treasurer, Todd Bachamp, along with the check. Send the yellow copy to me, Commitment to Humanities Chairman, Lino S. Munoz. The Special Olympics Basketball Tournaments are planned for two events again in These events are scheduled to take place on March 15 and 16 in Hays and March 23 and 24 in Topeka. Munoz if you plan to volunteer. Remember, Form 4584 Partnership Profile with Special Olympics is due January 31st. All councils should submit this form regardless of their participation or not. Every form counts, so please follow the instructions on the form and send it in soon.
