1 XLVIII Walton Family THE STROUDSBURG BRANCH 1. WILLIAM WALTON, the ancestor of the Stroudsburg branch of the Walton family, was born in Moreland Township, Philadelphia, now Montgomery, County, about the year 1735, and died about the year 1783, in Bucks or Montgomery County. He is supposed to have been a grandson of Thomas Walton, the second of the four brothers who settled in Byberry in 1687, as shown in the introduction of Chapter XLVII, and his wife Priscilla Hunn. He married Elizabeth Wells, and on 4 mo. 24, 1758, he and his wife Elizabeth made an acknowledgment to Abington Monthly Meeting for marriage out of unity. We know very little about their subsequent history. On a genealogical chart prepared by one of his descendants several years ago we have the names of his children as given below. It is probable, however, that he had another son Abraham Walton, who in a petition for guardian to the Orphans' Court of Northampton County, on 1 mo. 16, 1794, sets forth that he is one of the children of William Walton, late of the County of Bucks deceased, "who died about eleven years ago, leaving among other children the petitioner who is now a minor above the age of fourteen years and has labored in this county nearly four years now last passed." We have therefore added the name of Abraham at the end of the list of children on chart above mentioned. EDWARD WALTON' (William'), son of William and Elizabeth (Wells) Walton, married Sina Davis, a member of Gwynedd Monthly Meeting, where she was dealt with on 7 mo. 31, 1781, "for marriage by a priest" and she was finally disowned 11 mo. 27, Edward Walton and his wife Sina were residents of Whitemarsh Township in , and about the latter date removed to Whitpain Township, where they resided for several years, but in 1806 were residents of Montgomery Township. The respective dates of their death are unknown. 582

(William'), son of William and Elizabeth (Wells) \\Talton, born 1776, died about He removed to Lower Nazareth Township, Northampton County, Pa., in 1790, while a minor and served an apprenticeship there. WILLIAM DAVIS WALTON, NI.D. 3 (William,' Edward 2), son of Edward and Sina (Davis) Walton, horn in the neighborhood of Whitemarsh, Montgomery County, Pa., 12 mo. 24, 1781, died at Stroudsburg, Monroe County, Pa., 11 mo. 18, He came to Richland in 1806 to teach the school at Richland Meeting House, bringing a certificate from Gwynedd Monthly Meeting of Friends dated 2 mo. 6, He later removed to Stroudsburg, Monroe County, and taught school there in the schoolhouse erected by Friends, in which the first meeting was held under the jurisdiction of Richland I\Iontly Meeting. In the meantime he studied medicine and practiced that profession at Stroudsburg until his death. He owned much land in Stroudsburg and Lower Smithfield To nship and was prominently identified with the development of that section of the country, filling ith eminent ability a number of local offices. Dr. William \Valton married in 1811 Philena Palmer, born 9 mo. 29, 1781, died 8 mo. 16, She came with other members of her family from Marlborough, Ulster County, N. 4 WALTON FAMIL Y SYDENHAM WALTON, M.D. 4 (William,' Edward, 2 William D. 3), son of Dr. William D. and Philena (Palmer) Walton, was born at Stroudsburg 4 mo. 30, 1812, and died there 6 mo. 3, He studied medicine under his father and practiced in Stroudsburg until his death. Like his father, he took a lively interest in public affairs and filled a nunsber of responsible trusts. He married Hannah Phillips, born 6 mo. 15, 1815, died 12 mo. 23, 1893, daughter of Moses and Christiana (Carey) Phillips, of Stroudsburg. Moses?hillips was born in Solebury Township, Bucks County, Pa., 12 mo. 24, 1792, and died at Stroudsburg, Pa., 4 mo. 4, He married at Buckingham Monthly Meeting Christiana Carey, born 3 mo. 29, 1794, died 8 mo. 26, They were among the pioneers of the Stroudsburg settlement bringing a certificate from Buckingham to Richland Monthly Meeting where they held membership until the organization of the Stroudsburg Preparative Meeting into a separate Monthly Meeting. Their son Samuel married Phebe, sister of Dr. Sydenham Walton. Children of Dr. Sydenham and Hannah (Phillips) Walton: 50 William D., b ; living in Stroudsburg. 51 Mary, b ; in. Charles B. WALTON 4 (William,' Edward,2 William D. 3), son of Dr. William D. and Philena (Palmer) Walton, was born in Stroudsburg 6 mo. 12, 1820, and died in Philadelphia 10 mo. 31, He studied law and practiced at the Bar in Monroe County until In that year he was appointed by President Buchanan, Treasurer of the United States Mint, Philadelphia. He removed with his family to Philadelphia and resided there until his death, holding his position at the mint for many years. He married Caroline Raub. Children of James H. and Caroline (Raub) Walton: 66 John Marbacher, b ; d ; was appointed to a clerkship in 67 Eugene. 68 Joseph Davis. the U. S. Mint, 1860, and was employed there several years; served as private in Co. A, 7th Reg't Pa. Vols. for a few months in In 1867 appointed 2d Lieut., 4th Cavalry U. S. A. by Gen. Grant, and served in the War with the Indians being promoted to 1st Lieut. for gallant service against the Indians in the far West; in 1879 was placed on the retired list and returned to Phila.; elected to Common Council in 1883; reelected two years later; again elected 1891 and many times re-elected; appointed city comptroller in 1895 and filled that office until his death; he was associated with many of the prominent business, social, fraternal and patriotic societies of the city, and "full of years and of honors." He married, first, Alice Crabbe; second, Deborah J. Crabbe. 69 Henry F., b ; studied law in office of lion. Wayne NicVeagh and George Tucker 13ispham, and was admitted to Philadelphia liar 10 mo. 4, lie began practice in the office of Francis Rawle, Esq.; was appointed City Solicitor in 1884; elected to House of Representatives of Penna. 1890; reelected 1892 and 1894; was elected Speaker in 1895 and re-elected in 1898; again elected Speaker in "No presiding officer in the House ever displayed more signal ability in the responsible position." lie was appointed Prothonotary of the Supreme Court of Penna. and held that position until his death. lie married in 1882 Ella G. Norman and had four daughters and three sons.

WALTON, M.D.' (William,' Edward, 2 William D. 3), son of Dr. William D. and Philena (Palmer) Walton, was born in Stroudsburg 10 mo. 12, 1822, and died there 2 mo. 14, He studied medicine with his father and practiced in Stroudsburg until his death. He was prominently identified with public affairs in Stroudsburg and acquired a large estate which, having no children of his own, he devised to the children of his brothers and sisters. He married. 8 mo. 23, 1848, Alice Green, daughter of William and Mary (Roberts) Green. (See No. 43, Chapter XVII.) She WA'S born in Quakertown 4 mu. 14, 1820, where she lived until her marriage, after whisit she removed to Stroudsburg where she died 4 mo. 17, HANNAH 'WALTON' (William,' Edward, 2 William D. 3), daughter of Dr. William D. and Philena (Palmer) Walton, born at Stroudsbu. rg 3 mo. 15, 1825, married Nelson Cook, and they lived on a farm near Stroudsburg. We know nothing of any descendants. She died 8 mu. 16, PHEBE WALTON' (William,' Edward,' William D. 3), daughter of Dr. William D. and Philena (Palmer) Walton, born at Stroudsburg, Pa., 5 mo. 21, 1827, died there 5 mo. 19, 1885, married Samuel Phillips, son of Moses and Christiana (Carey) Phillips. He was born at Stroudsburg, 1 mo. 21, 1823, and died there 6 mo. 6, I3oth are buried in the Friends' burying ground at Stroudsburg, where their brothers and sisters and their parents are also buried.
