Now udas, who betrayed him, b b w w also knew the place, because esus often met there with his dis ciples. Scripture quotations from New Revised Standard Version Bible, Anglicized Edition, copyright 1989, 1995 the Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. Then esus, - ri - sees, b b w w knowing all that was to hap pen mf - to him, came forward and asked them, bb b b < For whom are you look - ing > They b b mf ans-wered,

Again he asked them, b b - das, who betrayed him, was standing with them. When esus said to them, For whom are you look-ing b b b b w e -sus answered: b b And they said, bb I told you that I am he. b b SOLDIERS f S. b b. w e-sus of Na za- b b. w w B. f f - reth. So if you are look-ing for me, b b let these men go. b b b b w This was to fulfil the word that he had spoken, b b w w I did not lose a single one of those whom you gave me. Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, b b w w w drew it, struck the high priest s slave, and cut off his right ear. The slave s name was Mal-chus.

f b b w e - sus said to Pe- ter, b b Put b b your sword back in its sheath. 3 bb Am I not to drink the cup that the Fa ther b b f - has gi - ven me b b w So the soldiers, their officer, and the ewish police arrested esus and bound him. b b w First they took him to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Cai a b b w w Cai - -phas, the highpriestthat year. - aphas was the one who had ad - vised the ews that it was better to have one person b b w w die for the people. Si mon Peter and an - -o-ther dis-ciple fol-lowed esus. Since that disciple b b w was known to the high priest, he went with esus into the courtyard of b b w w but Peter was standing out the high priest, - side at the gate. So the other disciple, who was known to the b b w w high priest, went out, spoke to the woman who guarded the gate, and brought Pe-ter in. b b w w The woman said to Pe ter, - You are not also one of this man s dis - ci -ples, are you

4 PETER (Tenor) b b b b b b w He said, < I am not. > Now the slaves and the police had made a b b w char-coal fire because it was cold, and they were standing round it and warm ing - b b w w Pe - them selves; - ter also was standing with them and warming him- self. Then the high priest b b w questioned esus about his disciples and about his teach - ing. e sus - answered, bb I have spo-ken PROMOTIONAL o -pen -ly to the world; I have al -COPY ways taught in sy - na-gogues and b b b b in the tem-ple, where all the ews come to - ge- ther: I have said no-thing in sec- ret. b b bb Why do you ask me Ask those who heard what I said to them; they know what I said. b b b b w When he had said this, one of the police standing nearby struck esus on the face, saying, b b OFFICER (Bass) w Is that how you answer the high priest b b w e - sus answered,

b b If b b I have spo - ken wrong - ly, tes - ti - fy to the wrong. 5 b b But if I have spo - ken right - ly, why do you strike me b b b b You b b w Then Annas sent him bound to Caia-phas the high priest. b b w Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They asked him, b b S. mf BYSTANDERS B. mf.. are not al - so one of his dis - ci - ples.. b b w w He w denied it and said, PETER b b I am not. b b w One of the slaves of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear SLAVE (Tenor) b b w b b w Peter had cut off, asked, Did b b w A -gain Peter denied it, and at that moment the cock crowed. I not see you in the gar-den with him

7 b b w Then Pi -late en tered - the headquarters again, summoned esus, and asked him, b b w b b w < Are you the king of the ews > e - sus answered, b b Do b b you ask this on your own, or did o - thers tell you a - bout me b b b b w w Pi I am not a -late replied: ew, am I Your own nationand the chief priestshave han-ded b b w b b b b < you o-ver to me: what haveyou done > e-sus ans-wered: My b b king-dom is not from b b this world. Now it was the day of Preparation for the b b b b b b w w w Passover; and it was a-bout noon. He said to the ews, Here b b PRIESTS S. > bb f w.. > > They cried out, A-way with him! A-way with him! So they took esus; b b w and carrying the cross byfor himself, reading he went out to what only is called The Place of the Skull, b b w w which in Hebrew is called Gol-go- tha. There they crucified him, and with him two others, b b one on ei -ther side, with e - sus be tween - them. Pi - late also had an inscription b b w w written and put on the cross. It read, e sus b b Ma w w w w - of Nazareth, the King of the ews. - ny of the ews read this inscription, because the place where esus was crucified b b w was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek.

b b w bb Then the chief priests of the ewssaid to Pi-late, Do n b b bb U but, This man said, I am King of the ews. n b b u pp PRIESTS not write, The King of the ews, b b S. w b b w.. So they said to one an-other, Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it b b b w.. B. pp b b w Pi - late answered, b b w b b w < What > When I have writ-ten, I have written. the soldiers had cruci-fied e-sus, b b w they took his clothes for and divided reading them into four only parts, one for each soldier. b b w They also took his tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from the top. B. SOLDIERS b b w w This b b to seewhowill get it. was to fulfil what the scrip-ture says, They divided my clothes among themselves, and for my w w clothing they cast lots. And that is what the soldiers did. Meanwhile standing near the cross of esus b b w w w were hismother and hismother s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and MaryMag dalene When esus

14 b b w w saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved stand-ing be side mp - her, he said to his mother, bb b b w < Wo - man, here is your son. > Then he said to the dis b b mp p bb b b w < Here is your mo -ther. > And b b p - ci - ple, from that hour the disciple took her b b w w into his own home. Af ter - this, when esus knew that all was now fi-nished. b b w bb he said (in order to fulfil the scrip -ture), I am thirst - y. b b b b w w A pp ar full of sour wine was stand-ing there. So they put a sponge full of the wine on a b b w w branch of hyssop and held it to pp his mouth. When esus had received the wine, he said, pp b b b b w < It is fin - ished. > Then he bowed his head and gave up his b b pp spirit. U

15 b b w Since it was the day of Preparation, the ews did not want the bodies left on the cross b b w w during the sabbath, especially because that sabbath was a day of great so lemnity. b b So they asked Pilateto havethe legs of the crucified men broken and the bo-dies re- moved. w b b w Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who had been b b w PROMOTIONAL w COPY w cruci fied - with him. But when they came to esus and saw that he was alrea-dy dead, b b w w they did not break his legs. Instead, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear; b b w w and at once blood and wa ter - came out. (He who saw this has testified b b w w so that you also may believe. His testimo -ny is true, and he knows that he tells the truth.) b b w These things occurred so that the scripturemight be fulfilled, None of his bones shall be broken ; b b w w and again anotherpassage of scrip ture - says, They will look on the one whom they have pierced. - If the account of the burial of Christ is to be read later, the Passion Gospel ends here.

16 () b b w w Af ter - these things, oseph of Arimathea, who was a dis-ci-ple of esus, though a secret one b b w because of his fear of the ews asked Pilate to let him take away the body of e sus. - b b w Pi - late gave him permission; so he came and re-moved his body. b b w w Nicodemus, who had at first come to e sus - by night, also came, b b w bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, weighing about a hun dred - pounds. b b w They took the body of esus and wrapped it with the spices in linen cloths, according to the b b w w burial cus tom - of the ews. Now there was a garden in the place where he was cru-ci -fied, b b w w and in the garden there was a new tomb in which no one had ev er - been laid. And since b b w it was the ewish Day of Preparation, and the tomb was nearby, they laid e - sus there. Composer s note on part of esus: The setting of the part for esus for three voices is a reference to the Trinitarian nature of our belief in God. Each voice should balance within the trio so that no part is dominant. Please note the dynamic markings for the part (as well as for the Chorus) which add to the drama of the Passion.
