He is the first and the last, who is, who was, and who is to come (8) Introduction: The book of Revelation is both revered and feared. Many people fear it because of its heavy use of symbolism & its seemingly cryptic messages. It can be hard to understand & even harder to interpret & apply. Others revere Revelation and enjoy the mystery & the endless possibilities it seemingly gives to them & it provides endless hours of fascinating research into themes such as the identity of the beast and the day of the coming of the Lord. It is unique in its literary style within the New Testament, but it s not as bizarre as it looks. The majority of the images come from Old Testament prophecy and these same Old Testament prophecies (along with some, and other important passages from the Law) provide the clues needed to understand the message. The best way to read Revelation is to follow closely the footnotes as they indicate the relevant Old Testament passages. You could ask the question, why would anyone write a letter based so strongly on Old Testament imagery? The answer lies partly in who it was written for and when it was written. It was written primarily to the church leaders late in the first century in the middle of a terrible persecution of the church. It wasn t safe to use names for the enemies of the church as it would only give them evidence to get you convicted for speaking out against them.

Yet Israel as a people had faced many wicked enemies over the years and the names of these old well-known enemies are substituted in Revelation to identify the new foes that persecute the church. For example, the Roman Emperor becomes one of the beasts of Daniels visions which in his day referred to the kings of Babylon, Assyria and Greece. Old conflicts such as that between Moses and Pharaoh, and Elijah and Jezebel provide the language to speak of Israel s new enemies. These old stories also provide encouragement as God s people see that the same God who delivered Moses & Elijah will also deliver them. The other unique & important factor about the book of Revelation is that it is a revelation from Jesus Christ. The apostle John is the privileged one to get this Revelation, this glimpse of heaven, of God and of the things that are to come. We read in the opening sentences of Revelation: Christ made these things known to his servant John by sending his angel to him, 2 and John has told all that he has seen. This is his report concerning the message from God and the truth revealed by Jesus Christ. 1:1-2 John is now an old man, a prisoner on the Island of Patmos for his Christian faith. He had been Bishop of Ephesus for many years but the emperor Domitian ordered a cruel persecution of the church in which many were killed and others taken prisoner. The most likely date for this writing is around 95 AD which makes John now around 95 years of age. It is a message to the church in the midst of persecution and the simple message is this: God is still on the throne. Though the earth is in upheaval and it seems that the enemy has the upper hand, the victory has already been won by Jesus Christ through his death and resurrection, and one day he will return for his own and he will make all things new. Though the message was simple in essence, it was still a hard message for the persecuted Christians of John s time to believe. If Jesus said he was with them, how could they be sure of this? If he is victorious and still reining on high, why had he let so many die for his sake? There is warning for the church as things will get worse before they get better, but the message is a good message as it assures us of the final victory of Christ over evil in the world. It is a message that calls us to stand firm in our faith because Christ will be victorious. Many doubted this message and fell away. There is a blessing that is promised though to each one who hears it and takes to heart what is written in it putting it into practice. This is the only book in the New Testament that carries such a promise.

1. Some titles of Jesus our King: a. Jesus - The Faithful Witness (5) As we celebrate today the feast of Christ the King, it is interesting what this passage reveals to us about Jesus the King. As is the custom with royalty, Jesus is given many titles and is called by many honorific names. The different titles in today s short reading tell us who he is and reflect what he has done for us in the past, as well as what he will do for us when he returns. Kingly titles are attributed to him, however throughout all scripture. One of the most famous passages is Isaiah 9:6 which prophecies the birth of the Messiah, God s chosen king. It reads: A child is born to us! A son is given to us! And he will be our ruler. He will be called, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6. A contemporary example of royal titles is Queen Elizabeth whose many titles are too numerous to list. Her short title in the UK is Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom, Canada and Her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith. There are dozens more titles that she has. What we see in today s readings are both pseudonyms for the one they are avoiding naming too often because of the persecution, and titles of the one who is king over all. Some of these are listed here, and many others appear throughout the book of Revelation. The first of these is the faithful witness (5). It s not unlike Queen Elizabeth s title Defender of the Faith. The word for witness is martirio the origin of the word martyr. Jesus is a king who bears true and faithful witness to the one who sent him, the Father who is in heaven, and he bares his witness faithfully even to the cross becoming in fact a martyr. He was faithful in giving his life as a ransom for many and didn t hesitate before God to complete his mission, even if in the Garden of Gethsemane he asked if there was another way. His resolve was always to be the faithful witness. In his death, Jesus bore this kingly title, the Faithful witness. b. Jesus The firstborn from the dead (5) Secondly we have the title The firstborn from the dead. Not only did he die a king, but he is the first to rise from the dead. You could argue that Jairus s daughter, or the widow s son or even Lazarus were the first to rise. Their resurrections were rising from death to continue their mortal lives to one day die again.

Jesus rose immortal, never again to die, already changed from perishable to imperishable. He is the firstborn of the dead and the sign that death has been defeated and that eternal life is not only possible but living and proven. c. Jesus The ruler of the kings of the earth (5) Jesus not only died a king and rose again a king, he lives and rules forever as the king of kings. The kings of the earth might swear that they bow to no-one, but they depend on this king for their very lives, their kingdoms, and all that they have. They will one day have to give an account to him and certainly, together with all creation will bend their knee and bow their heads before the one true king of all creation. 2. What Jesus has already done for us: a. He loves us, and has freed us from our sins (5) Jesus is worthy of all the titles given to him because in his great love for us has given himself completely to rescue us through his sacrificial death, to save us from our sins and from our selves. Jesus mission was primarily a rescue mission. Mankind had rejected god s way and tried to do things its own way with devastating consequences. In love, God the father sends his son to rescue us at the cost of his own life. Our sins separated us from God we under the condemnation of the law facing judgement. Furthermore, sin had such a hold over us that we were helpless to free ourselves. It was like an addiction that dominated our minds. Jesus took the penalty for our sins in his body on the cross and sent his Holy Spirit to transform our minds and to incline our hearts towards God. Jesus, our king, has freed us from our sins. b. He has made us a kingdom of priests (6) He has not only freed us. He has given us the privilege of becoming a kingdom of priests, a royal priesthood. This is what God promised the Israelites back in Exodus 19 where we read: Now, if you will obey me and keep my covenant, you will be my own people. The whole earth is mine, but you will be my chosen people, 6 a people dedicated to me alone, and you will serve me as priests. Exodus 19:5-6 Peter also emphasizes this in his letters. Those whom Jesus has rescued are not relegated to the back blocks but reign with Jesus as heirs of God s kingdom, and as priests who go between God and his lost world calling people to salvation and interceding with God for the world.

3. What Jesus will yet do for us: a. He is coming on the clouds and every eye shall him (7) In the last verses for today, we also get a glimpse of Jesus the omega, the last. It s not only what he has done and what he is currently doing that matters. His mission will be completed when he returns in glory and majesty on the clouds of heaven. We often speak of Jesus being with us or living in our hearts. Jesus is with us today through the presence of the Holy Spirit but he himself is physically at God s right hand in heaven. He ascended with a real body, not just as a spirit. He will come again, just as he has promised, and he reminds the church of this in vs. 7. Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him ; and all peoples on earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen. (7) His return won t be a spiritual return as some speak of, that he has already come and is in our hearts. He will return in glory and majesty to bring an end to the earth as it is and to bring about a renewing of all things as he establishes forever his kingdom on the new earth in all its glory. Even those who pierced him and those who don t believe in him will see him on that day. b. He is the first and the last, who is, who was, and who is to come (8) Jesus is the first and the last, who is, who was, and who is to come. This is a variant of the name that God used of himself when he presented himself to Moses. Yahweh means simply I am or I am who I am but it is present in all three tenses, past present and future. Jesus is the eternal I am. He is God in all his fulness and when he returns, there will be no doubt in anyone s mind. Jesus the King reigns already from the right hand of God the Father in heaven, but one day he will return and then every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that He is Lord and God. To Think About: Which of Jesus many titles speaks most powerfully to you? Why? The faithful witness The firstborn from the dead The ruler of the kings of the earth The first and the last The one who was, who is, and who is to come.
