Vol. VIII, No. XII H.O.G. Chapter #2376 December 2017 Est. 19 September 2009 Official Newsletter of Harley Owners Group Chapter #2376, Anthem, Arizona USA Jeff Feldstein Fluffy Sunday December 10, 2017 a day to remember. We had the annual Anthem H.O.G. Christmas party at the Horny Toad restaurant in Cave Creek. We had a nice private dining room with nicer appointments and Christmas decorations. Attendance was great, lots of new members this year. Frank Stubbs joined in as well. The retiring officers were recognized, Rory Kraft after four years of being Head Road Captain, has hung up his spurs. He will continue to lead us on more memorable rides as our Navigator. I relinquished my role as Assistant Director to Al Harper, who will be our new Assistant Director. Gaby Burlingame will be our new Activities Officer. Keith Preston, our Editor, will also assume the Head Road Captain position, and Gary Fraley will help Adrienne Coro with Photographer duties. Steve Ehnis will take over for Todd Carter, our retiring Web Master, These members will join our existing officers to help our chapter grow and have fun. Did I mention? I am the Director for I think we had a great time at our party. The food was great. We had two 50/50 winners who split all the proceeds, and we even had a surprise gifting of some holiday cash to four of our members. The Gift Exchange provided lots of fun. There were some very, very nice items that changed hands. I am sure glad we instituted the policy of stealing only once; otherwise we would have been there all night. Needless to say it was a lot of fun. Adrienne took a lot of very nice pictures, which she has now posted on our FaceBook page. (Note: I have requested that some of mine be taken down, but to no avail.) The party was over before nine, so members who had to work on Monday could be home at a somewhat reasonable hour. Next year, we will have our party on Saturday and party a little longer, perhaps. I would like to thank all of the members who came as they helped to make the party successful. I hope you all had a great time getting to know your fellow members a little better. A special thanks to: Jim & Kim Swan, Kathy & Rory Kraft, Sharon & Jack Ackerman, and John Hurley who helped me take down the sound system and schlep it to my vehicle. Merry Christmas and a safe riding Happy New Year to all! Inside this Issue... How We Roll Christmas Party Anti Lock Brakes Change

Paula Genovese Trooper LOH Officer We had a great day during our trip to the Queen Creek Olive Mill. We had perfect weather, beautiful grounds, did a little shopping, and had a gourmet lunch. We were lucky enough to have a nice sunny day; a perfect day to be outside. There was plenty of seating outside and olive trees provided shade. The store was unique and offered browsing for locally made products. Lunch was good enough to make you want to go back. We had a nice turnout; please note that Fred was brave enough to join the ladies. Gentlemen are always invited. We are planning a ride back there in January, so I hope you can join us. Glendale Glitters in Historic downtown Glendale put on quite a light show. We walked around for a bit to check out this popular event, which had all the characteristics of a street party. Roads were blocked off from vehicles, which made for easy walking. The park was filled with holiday lighting. Every vendor you could imagine was offering food and drink. The band was set up outside and was pretty good. I hope you all have a safe, joyful, and memorable holiday season and are looking forward to the events and adventures in Paula Trooper Genovese 3

Rory Kraft Navigator Head Road Captain I t is the end of another year, the Christmas party is over, and a good time was had by all. The Anthem H.O.G. Chapter is a great chapter. I am a Charter member, having been involved in from its beginning in I am proud to belong to a chapter that includes like-minded people who share a passion for riding Harleys. The Buddy Stubbs Family has always been good to me. I ve enjoyed working with Frank and Jack. I don t get an occasion to see Buddy that much, but when I do he always shakes my hand, says hi and tells me how much he appreciates the Chapter and what it does to support the dealerships. I have been riding a long time: 59 years on two wheels. Like most of you, it hasn t always been on a Harley. I started with mini-bikes, moved on to Cushman scooters, Hondas, and Yamahas, then I finally I got a Harley. I bought my first Harley from another dealership. I was given a membership to their HOG chapter, but never attended a meeting or a ride. I originally didn t think I d like to ride in a group. For years I rode on my own and went where I wanted to go and when I wanted to go. That was fine for years but after we had kids, Kathy didn t want to take the chance of some tragedy happening and stopped riding. I bought my next Harley from Buddy Stubbs at the Phoenix location and made a new friend, Joe Pasquali, my salesperson. Joe and I have remained friends for 10 years now. At the time, I heard rumors that a new dealership was opening up in Anthem. I decided to wait for the dealership to open to join the new HOG chapter and meet a new group of people and ride with them. As it turned out, I became one of the founding members of HOG Chapter #2376. At one of our first meetings it was decided that we needed a newsletter. A contest was held to name our newsletter. Six people provided suggestions and after a vote, my entry won netting me a $25.00 gift card, and the honor of naming our newsletter: Chapter Chatter. Our first Director was Don Curtis, who stayed for one year. He was followed by Pete Dutoit, who served for three years, with me as Assistant Director for 2 years. I served as Director for three years and was Head Road Captain for four years. I ve really enjoyed being involved with a chapter that gives back to our community. We sponsor our Desert Ride, which provides food and monetary donations for St. Mary s Food Bank. We collect clothing and Christmas gifts for Children s First Academy. We also collect personal hygiene items for The Justa Center, which provides support for veterans and the homeless in Phoenix. It s great to be part of this generous giving. It s been a lot of work and I have enjoyed almost every moment of it. I ve made lots of friends: some that stay and some that move on to different adventures. As a native 6

Arizonan, I have seen most of the state from the seat of Purple Passion, my 2016 Harley-Davidson Ultra Limited. I have ventured out on my own and with friends; with other HOG members from around the country. I ve crossed the country twice, ridden into Canada, the west coast to the farthest northern point I could, and then back down through Yellowstone in the snow. I ve enjoyed all of my adventures. I would like to think that I have a lot more riding in me and will continue to do so with the best Chapter in the state, with old friends and new friends I hope to meet. I still have about six states that I haven t ridden in yet, but they are on my bucket list. Finally, I will not be an officer in the chapter anymore, but I will continue riding right beside you and leading as a Road captain. I want to thank all members, past and present for the friendship and support that you have shown me. It s time for more of our talented people to step up and lead this chapter into the future. I m excited to see how the chapter grows with new people, and with the innovations coming out every year from Harley-Davidson. Thank you, and as always: Have fun and ride safe. Rory We need your story: Do you have a story to tell? How about an article of interest? Perhaps you took a trip recently, or modified your bike, or would like to comment on riding gear. Chapter Chatter is all about YOU. We need your input. Please send ideas, suggestions, or your own items for consideration to editor@anthemhog.com. Thank you for reading Chapter Chatter. When you first start your motorcycle, it s good practice to not rev the engine. Instead, let the engine idle so the oil can work its way to the top of the motor; a process that takes about 15 seconds after the engine is started. Check out this video, which compares automotive tappets to motorcycle engine tappets and their ability to move oil throughout the engine. See 7

Each year, we participate in the Birds on Bikes ride. Our chapter donated over 321 pounds of turkey to the St. Vincent de Paul kitchen in south Phoenix. Many of our chapter members served in the United States military. We honor those with whom we ride and to all of those who served. Chapter photographer Gary Fraley captured our presence at the Veteran s Day service, which took place at the Vietnam Memorial in Anthem, AZ. The memorial is designed to focus the rays of the sun onto the Great Seal of the United States at exactly 11:11 a.m. on November 11 th each year. Photos by Gary Fraley, Chapter Photographer. 8

Keith Preston Potter Editor C an you imagine what it would be like if nothing ever changed? It s an impossible fantasy, right? Change the process of change is quite possibly the only thing on Earth that doesn t change. It is a fact of life. Some changes are good and some changes present a challenge. I d like to briefly describe a change that we are all going to experience together. Beginning in January, I will assume the responsibility of Head Road Captain for Anthem H.O.G. Chapter #2376. My first challenge is to get to know what types of rides members want. Do they want short rides, long rides, rides with a meal at the end, or rides that just go to interesting destinations? I need to get to know my fellow Road Captains a little better and recruit a couple of new ones. I am genuinely interested in what types of rides they like or would like to lead. I want to know their thoughts on what they think would be a fun, positive ride schedule for members. Since we can lay claim to being a chapter that rides, these first two challenges are important to me. The third challenge is one that I will need your help in meeting: how to adequately follow a great Head Road Captain. Rory Kraft (a.k.a. Navigator) has been the only Head Road Captain I ve ever known. His knowledge of the landscape, of motorcycles, and of people is impressive. His willingness to share and help others is even more impressive. As a charter member of our chapter, his service to the Anthem H.O.G.s has been priceless. I will miss him being my Head Road Captain. Fortunately for me (and all of us) he will continue as a regular Road Captain on future rides. I want you all to know that I have an intense passion for riding motorcycles. It s something I ve been doing for the past 48 years. It s part of my identity. I am a firm believer in safety and an advocate for improvement of rider skills. I also want to have fun. That s a good start. There are many more things I have to learn and I will be learning them as we go forward together. Many aspects of the Head Road Captain position will continue as they have before. There will also be some changes here and there... it s inevitable. My most sincere hope is that you will be patient and accepting as I begin this new service role. I have some big boots to fill. Time to fire up, put my fists into the wind and my knees in the breeze. I hope you ll come along. See you on the next ride. Potter 9

Jim Swan Swannee Secretary Minutes General Meeting: Anthem HOG Chapter #2376, November 18, 2017 Location: Anthem Buddy Stubbs HOG Meeting Room Attendance: Members and Guests Present: 40 Officers Present: Officers Absent: Jeff Feldstein (Assistant Director), Sharon Ackerman (Treasurer), Jim Swan (Secretary & Membership Officer), Rory Kraft (Head Road Captain), Keith Preston (Editor), Paula Genovese (LOH), Brian Hicks (Safety Officer) Adrienne Coro (Photographer), Todd Carter (Webmaster), Kim Swan (Activities Officer) Jeff Feldstein called the meeting to order at 10:02 am. The Pledge of Allegiance was stated by all. Jeff Feldstein-Assistant Director: I want to welcome everyone. Do we have any new members today and what do you ride? My name is Howard Kerstine and I ride a 2013 Ultra. My name is Brian Owens and I ride 2014 Street Glide. Our Membership Officer will be collecting your membership dues for 2018 and for the Chapter s Christmas Party at the table outside after today s meeting. As a reminder, tomorrow we have our annual Birds on Bikes ride to St Vincent DePaul. We will meet at McDonalds at 10:30 am. Last year we donated a little over 200 pounds and we would like to do more this year. This is our last formal meeting for On the 10 th of December, we will be having our Christmas Party at the Horny Toad in Cave Creek. However, we will still be doing the Hogs & Dogs on December 16 th and we will be needing volunteers for the Hogs & Dogs along with volunteers to gift wrap for the dealership. We have a signup sheet for the gift-wrapping volunteers. Sharon Ackerman-Treasurer: We have $6, in the bank. Jim Swan-Secretary: The only item I have is that at our January 2018 meeting, we will be electing our Chapter s Board of Directors. We will be electing two from the Chapter Officers and two from the general membership. Keith Preston-Editor: I am always looking for suggestions for the newsletter. They could include ideas for articles, pictures from a trip you took or a story about what you have done to your bike, just to name a few ideas. I am here to make the newsletter interesting and include items you want to read. John Hurley is the winner this month for finding his National HOG number in last month s newsletter. Congratulation John. The Chapter Chatter will be a sent out a little later in December because we are going to include pictures from the Christmas Party. 10

Paula Genovese-LOH: Our next get together will be on Friday, December 1 st. We are going to meet at Coyote Oaties at 5:30 pm to tour Glendale Glitters. The address for Coyote Oaties is 7005 N. 58 th Ave, Glendale. The Glitters is from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. In January we are going to have a ride to the Queen Creek Olive Mill for lunch. We will be ordering new patches and if you don t see what you want, let us know. Rory Kraft-Head Road Captain: Tomorrow, we have our Birds on Bikes rides. It is a Dealer Sponsored Ride so please bring your Loyalty Rewards Card. On November 25 th, I will be leading a ride to Tin Top Bar & Grill in Tonopah. We will meet at McDonalds at 8:30 am for an 88-mile ride for lunch. Then on Sunday, November 26 th, Big Hoss will be leading a ride to the BackBurner Restaurant in Prescott Valley. Meet at the dealership at 10:00 am for this 64-mile ride. Also, we are collecting the travel soaps, shampoos, etc., that are available at hotels and motels. We will donate them to the Justa Center so they can provide them to the senior homeless and senior veterans. So, when you are traveling, and you don t use these items, bring them here and we will donate them to the Center. Brian Hicks, Safety Officer: The first thing I want to mention is that Bill Hoffman, Riding Academy Manager, from Buddy Stubbs, asked us to inform the General Membership that there are 4 openings for the January 7, 2018, Skilled Riders Course. It takes place at 9:00 am. The cost is $150. You are eligible for a $25 gift card from Buddy Stubbs and $50 from National HOG to offset some of the cost. The course comes highly recommended. I want to talk a little about ABS. I obtained this information from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation s website. They have many publications about riding a motorcycle. Also, I want to talk about home injuries. When you think you have injured yourself, don t keep working, have it checked out, give it a chance to heal or you might make your injury worse. Jim Swan-Membership Officer: As of today we have 120 members. We lost three members due to them not continuing their National HOG membership and we picked up one new member through his purchase of a new bike from the dealership. As a reminder, we are trying to renew everyone s Chapter membership by December 31 st. I will be renewing memberships at the table in front of the store. If you have not received your Chapter membership card or had it punched for 2018, I can also do that at that time. We have four members that qualified for zero 2018 dues for bringing two new members to the club and we have one member that has qualified for zero 2019 dues. Thank you for helping the membership grow. I have the scanner for the Loyalty Reward Card. 50/50 raffle for $64---winner-Dan Williams Buddy Stubbs $25 gift card winner Don Montrey Lou Shriro moved to adjourn and Brian Hicks seconded the motion. The meeting was adjourned at 10:47 am. Respectfully Submitted, Jim Swan, Secretary Anthem HOG Chapter #
