1 Civil War and Reconstruction History 313 Fall 2014 Brian Robertson Office: Founder s Hall, 217 O Brian.robertson@tamuct.edu Phone: (254) Office Hours: By Appointment or MW: 3:00 to 4:00 PM * T: 4:00 to 6:00 PM * R: 12:00 to 1:00 PM Course Description: The purpose of this course is to introduce undergraduate students to the study of the American Civil War and Reconstruction. Through the reading of monographs, attendance of lectures, and participation in class discussions, this course will acquaint students with the political, economic, social, cultural, and intellectual forces which have shaped the study of the American Civil War and Reconstruction. Lectures and homework assignments will focus on particularly important themes or events; no attempt will be made by the instructor to cover every aspect of American military history; the textbook will provide coverage for the entire range of the course. Academic Integrity: Students must conform to the highest standards of academic integrity in their coursework; infractions of TAMUCT academic integrity policies will be unstintingly punished. Students should familiarize themselves with TAMUCT s policies regarding academic integrity. Americans with Disabilities Act: Any student who, because of a disabling condition, may require special arrangements in order to meet course requirements should contact me as soon as possible so that necessary accommodations can be made. Students should present appropriate verification of need for assistance to the Office of Disability Support and Access, Warrior Hall, Room 212F. See also: Course Requirements: There will be two essay exams a midterm and a final based on the primary and secondary sources read during the course (opened book). A weekly quiz based on the previous lecture and reading assignment will be given on every Thursday. Other than the course text book, Students are required to write a book review on Confederates in the Attic: Dispatches From the Unfinished Civil War by Tony Horowitz. Every Thursday, 1
2 there will be class discussions on the assigned secondary and primary source reading material. Regular Attendance: Material from the lectures is designed to provide the preponderance of tested and quizzed material. It is therefore necessary to attend lectures to pass this class. In the unlikely event of severe illness or extraordinary circumstances, a student MUST provide written documentation to receive an excused absence. Grade Breakdown: Your final grade will be based on a mid-term examination (20%), quizzes (20%), a bookreview (20%), class participation (20%) and a final examination (20%). Grades will be determined by the following scale: (F) 0-59%; (D) 60-69%; (C) 70-79%; (B) 80-89%; and (A) %. Required Readings: Horowitz, Tony. Lexington: University of Kentucky Press, Expected Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: 1. Examine the social, economic, and political roots of sectional conflict and the American Civil War. 2. Identify the central figures and policies in the political crisis, the war, and reconstruction. 4. Analyze the Civil War and its influence on American society and American historical memory. 5. Assess and evaluate the past through engaging diverse primary sources. 6. Identify and comprehend the central role of race and slavery in the American Civil War. 7. Write essays utilizing primary sources. 8. Write a book review utilizing professional academic book review standards and citations. 2
