2 Rules and Guidelines Each Church will designate a captain and a co-captain prior to the competition. (Failure to do so will result in disqualification.) Each Church will sponsor one team ages 7-12 and one team ages consisting of not more than three members and three alternates (six members total). Alternates will be used to replace team members if illness or other emergencies arise prior to or during the competition. At the discretion of the team coach they may be substituted into the competition between rounds or they may not be utilized at all. Rules for ages 7-12 Competition ROUNDS First Second Third Tiebreaker 15 minutes 10 minutes 10 minutes 5 minutes The team captains will flip a coin to determine who answers the first questions. Any team member may answer the question and fifteen (15) seconds will be given as the allotted time for a correct response. Team members may consult among themselves before responding; however, the person who begins to answer the question must be the one to complete the answer. If their answer is incorrect, the opposing team may answer. There will be a moderator and a chief judge to settle disputes should they arise; however, THE DECISION OF THE JUDGES WILL BE FINAL! The moderator should give the category and specific number of each question used in competition. If the moderator is interrupted by either team while reading a question, the moderator will immediately stop reading the question (time is stopped) and allow the individual fifteen (15) seconds in which to answer. Once the moderator has repeated the question, time continues. Each team is to remain silent while the question is being repeated. If a team fails to remain silent, it will be penalized one (1) point for each offense. The person who interrupts the moderator must proceed to answer the question without benefit of having the question re-read. If the individual who interrupted the moderator fails to provide the correct answer, the team will be penalized one (1) point. The moderator will then repeat the entire question for the opposing team unless the moderator inadvertently gives the correct answer. If either chief judge or moderator believes that a particular answer to a question may be accurate but incomplete, he/she may request the responding team to provide additional information. IN ALL CASES FIRST AND LAST NAMES OF INDIVIDUALS MUST BE GIVEN IN ORDER TO SCORE. If a team response provides more information than is included in the correct answer, the moderator or chief judge may determine whether the answer is acceptable or may ask for clarification by the team. 2 P a g e

3 NOTE: A contestant will be given forty (40) seconds to answer a bonus question due to very lengthy answers required, such as in reciting the Apostles Creed. No disruptive communication is permitted by a team when the question has been addressed to the competing team. A verbal warning will be given for the first violation, followed by a minus one-point penalty for the second offense. If it is suspected by a Brain Bowl Official that answers are being supplied to the team from the audience, the offending team will be penalized as follows: minus one point for the first offense, minus two points for the second offense and immediate disqualification for the third offense! When Team A incorrectly answers a question and the moderator inadvertently provides the answers prior to allowing Team B to answer, a new question will be drawn for Team B s response. If for some reason the moderator needs to throw out a question, he/she should elaborate on the problem with the question. No team member may challenge or question the moderator or any other team official at any time during a match. Participants are only to answer questions during the official match. The chief judge may issue a warning or assess a two-point penalty if an interruption occurs. Team members or the coach may ask for clarification regarding an answer at the end of the match. When, and if, all bonus questions have been exhausted in a tie-breaking situation, the next round of competition will consist of Bible questions. These questions will not have been previously given to the competitors. Each team will be given five (5) minutes to look up and record written answers. Teams must supply their own Bibles. Each correct response will be worth one point. The team with the most correct answers will be declared the winner. The score for each match must be recorded and the score sheet must not be destroyed. Scores will be given to the chief scorekeeper in order to be posted. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS SHOULD NOT BE IN THE TEAM S VIEW OR BE ASSISTED BY THE AUDIENCE 3 P a g e

Turner Theological Seminary, Atlanta, GA Jackson Theological Seminary, Crossett, AR and Warren, AR R. R. Wright Theological Seminary, Republic of South Africa Payne Theological Seminary, Wilberforce, OH Dickerson Theological Seminary, Columbia, SC Explain the Structure of the African Methodist Episcopal Church The African Methodist Episcopal Church is a connectional organization. Each local church is a part of the larger connection. The Bishops are the Chief Officers of the Connectional Organization. They are elected for life by a majority vote of the General Conference which meets every four years. Bishops are bound by the laws of the church to retire upon the General Conference nearest their 75th birthday. Presiding Elders are the assistants, like middle management, whom the Bishops appoint to supervise the preachers in a Presiding Elder's District. A Presiding Elder District is one portion of an Annual Conference, which in turn is one part of the Episcopal District over which a Bishop presides. In the Presiding Elder District, the appointed Presiding Elder meets with the local churches that comprise the District, at least once every three months for a Quarterly Conference. The Presiding Elder also presides over a District Conference and a Church School Convention in his or her District. At the end of an Annual Conference year, the Presiding Elder reports to the Bishop at the Annual Conference and makes recommendations for pastoral appointments. Pastors receive a yearly appointment to a charge (church), on the recommendation of the Presiding Elder and with the approval and final appointment of the Bishop. The pastor is in full charge of the Church and is an ex-official member of all boards, organizations and clubs of that Church. Explain the General Conference The General Conference is the supreme body of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. It is composed of the Bishops, as ex-officio presidents, according to the rank of election, and an equal number of ministerial and lay delegates, elected by each of the Annual Conferences and the lay Electoral Colleges of the Annual Conferences. Other ex-officio members are: the General Officers, College Presidents, Deans of Theological Seminaries; Chaplains in the Regular Armed Forces of the U.S.A. The General Conference meets every four years, but may have extra sessions in certain emergencies. 28 P a g e

29 Explain the Duties of the Council of Bishops The Council of Bishops is the Executive Branch of the Connectional Church. It has the general oversight of the Church during the interim between General Conferences. The Council of Bishops shall meet annually at such time and place as the majority of the Council shall determine and also at such other times as may be deemed necessary in the discharging its responsibility as the Executive Branch of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. The Council of Bishops shall hold at least two public sessions at each annual meeting. At the first, complaints and petitions against a Bishop shall be heard, at the second, the decisions of the Council shall be made public. All decisions shall be in writing. Recite the Apostles' Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only son our Lord who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead; and buried. The third day he arose from the dead' he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Church Universal, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen. Recite the General Confession Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Maker of all things, Judge of all men, we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness which we from time to time most grievously have committed by thought, word, and deed against Thy Divine Majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father, for Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ's sake; forgive us all that is past, and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please Thee in the newness of life, to the honor and glory of your name, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen. 29 P a g e
