February 2017 Hilton United Methodist Church Construction Zone If you have not had a chance to join us in January, our series Construction Zone is continuing in the month of February. I invite you to read along in the book of Nehemiah each week. The schedule is below. Our sanctuary is under construction, but more importantly, our hearts are under construction. It is a prayer that each of us will be open to the movement of the Holy Spirit to transform us into deeper discipleship of Jesus Christ. February 5 Nehemiah 5-6 Graciously Loving and Serving Others February 12 Nehemiah 6-8 Hungry, Hungry... For God s Word February 19 Nehemiah 9 Worship and Remember February 26 Nehemiah Leaving a Legacy CREED: What Christians Believe and Why Wednesday March 1 st begins the Christian season of Lent. A period of 40 days (excluding Sundays) to prepare ourselves for Easter and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Typically, Lent is used by the church to prepare converts and allow current Christians a time of reflection and repentance. January and February were a study of Nehemiah and the building of the walls of the city of Jerusalem. More importantly a building of our hearts to turn toward God. Starting March 5 the entire congregation (children and adults) will begin a new series for the season of Lent. This series is based on the book, CREED: What Christians Believe and Why, by Adam Hamilton. Have you ever recited the Apostles Creed in worship and wondered why you were saying, I Believe and whether or not you really did believe those things? Maybe you have not taken the time to memorize the creed or really pay attention to what it says. The Apostle s Creed is a historic statement of foundational Christian faith. Maybe you have wondered why it makes a difference in your everyday life? What we believe about God affects how we live. This study in small groups and in worship will hopefully begin conversations about what Christians believe, why we believe it, and why it matters. Please consider obtaining a copy of the book. You may call the church office to order a copy or order your own at Amazon.com for Kindle or paperback. Pastor Jennifer Green 1

Way to go Hilton UMC!!! We paid 100% of our Shared Ministry for 2016!!! Below is a letter from Bishop Rev. Mark Webb regarding the Conference Shared Ministries: Dear Sisters and Brothers of the Upper New York Conference, Grace and peace to you in the name of Jesus Christ! As United Methodist followers of Jesus Christ, we claim a rich heritage and an amazing connection. Together we are stronger and able to accomplish a witness for Christ in the world that we could not alone. Stories abound of the ways in which God's grace is offered through the passionate ministry of each and every congregation within The Upper New York Conference and through our connection with United Methodist Christians around the world. I want you to know of my continual appreciation for your ministry, but specifically I want to say thank you for one expression of that ministry - the commitment to increasing our capacity as it relates to Ministry Share payments. This year, thanks to the leadership of clergy and laity in each of our congregations, we received the highest receipt of Ministry Shares in the history of The Upper New York Conference. Because of this commitment and through the increased efforts that our Conference Council on Finance & Administration, staff, and other leaders have applied to manage our spending, for the first time in our history, The Upper New York Conference has paid 100 percent of our General Church apportionments. In three years, we have moved from being able to pay only 56 percent of our commitments to the General Church to paying 100 percent. This is an amazing accomplishment! Thanks be to God! Our giving through Ministry Shares represents one of the ways in which we commit together to mission, ministry and witness. Over this past year, we had to make some painful decisions around spending. We have increased our conversations about our culture of giving. Our work together has brought fruit! I am grateful for the congregations that have faithfully paid 100 percent of their Ministry Shares year after year. I celebrate the many ways in which congregations responded to the challenge of increasing ministry share payments. I have been blessed by the stories of congregations giving beyond 100 percent to help their sister churches who could not offer their full payment. I am filled with joy as I think about the generosity, sacrifice, and hard work. We know this work is not complete and God is calling us to continue to find ways to offer the best of what we have been given in every way. Yet, let us look at what God has done! Let us truly celebrate what is possible when we trust, honor, and live our connection with one another. So again, let me say thank you! Thanks for your commitment to the mission of "making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world." Thanks for your willingness to share the love of Christ by honoring the covenant of Ministry Shares. Thanks for your faithful witness! It is my joy to share ministry with you. Be assured of my constant prayers for each and every one of you as you continue to shine the light of Jesus Christ! Sincerely, Mark J. Webb 2

Trustees Corner The sanctuary updates of paint and carpeting should be complete as of this publication! Goal is to have the first service in the sanctuary on Feb. 5 th. Carpeting should be done the week of January 23 rd. The next week, Jan 29 th through Feb 4 will be cleaning and straightening things up time. It has been an awesome project! The entire church family has been impacted by these updates. You will see items moved and placed back at a slow pace. Many of us have peeked in during all the changes. Reactions have been exciting to hear and see. We all need some time to adjust to the changes. During the renovations, the history cabinet was packed up for safe keeping. Are you interested in our long history? We are in need of a historian to organize information. It s a job that can be done on your own schedule, a few hours here and there. Have you talked with Bill Kast and Bernie & Al Blossom about past events? We have lost many of our long-time members over the years. Many of them were good at reminding us about our history. There is so much history we don t know about. When and where was our church started? When did we move to the current location? Where was the cornerstone that hung under the rose stained glass window originally? Where did the stone just north of the double doors come from? How long has UMW been active? When was our new building finished, and dedicated? Please let Pastor Jennifer know if you are interested in working on the information. Upcoming projects include new lights the birds can t nest in on the west porch, continued upgrades to the electric panels 2 done, 2 to go, moving the Fellowship Hall coffee pot to the east side next to the kitchen door, convening the Safety subgroup to finish the work started, a new cabinet in the parsonage laundry area, replacing the light fixtures in the coat closet, 3 rd floor attic floor repairs, multipurpose room window repairs, cement floor crack repairs in the basement storage area, west side heat tapes to prevent ice damage and whatever else pops up. There has been some discussion about area and room usage with all the changes going on. We need to come up with a plan that will encompass current and future needs. How do you see our space used? Do we need a conference room? A quiet room? An exercise space? A small lunch space? A prayer space? Storage for crafts? A worship center? Two areas for children during worship? A parent center? Please pray about our space usage. Trustees would like to hear your concerns and thoughts. Please fill out a blue sheet and turn it in with ideas and suggestions. We need to brainstorm ideas so decisions can be thoughtfully made on space needs and usage. Please remember part of Trustees responsibilities is to oversee, maintain and supervise all church property. If you want to donate an item it should be approved by the Trustees before it is donated. All items should be kept track of for insurance purposes. If you want to move something into the building or hang something up permanently, please check with Trustees first. Trustees are Bob Bunt, Jamie Coonan, Ken Fuller, Liz Gliszczynski, Sharon Kron, Nancy Manning, Dave Pulci and Diann Sneddon. 3

Worship Committee It has been quite a January at HUMC. My thanks for all those who helped clean out the Sanctuary before the painters arrived. It was a job well done. Thanks to those who came and helped clean up after the painters and men who put down the new rug, preparing the Sanctuary for our return. And a large thank you to all of you for your patience as we progressed through this project of updating our Sanctuary. It was a project that was long overdue. We may have a few more things to do before we are completely "moved" back in but the Worship Committee is working on getting it all done as quickly as possible. Thank you again for your help and patience Janet LaBorie Sharing Suppers January 12 was our night to host Sharing Suppers. We had a total of 48 guests and workers. My thanks to the volunteers who helped put on the meal and the church family that attended. The menu was salad, chicken and biscuits, cookies and beverages. Mary Hall was our chef of the month. February 11 is our next night to host Sharing Suppers. Mary Hall will be our chef for the month and she tells me the menu will be salad, chili, a dessert plus coffee or tea. A sign up sheet for volunteer helpers will be posted on the bulletin board in the Narthex. All are welcome, tell or bring a friend, we are having delicious meals. I have added another chef for the month of June. My thanks to Karen and Bob Blank for volunteering to be the our chefs for that month.. I would like to have someone volunteer to our "chef" of the month for May. That will complete our September June 2017 season. If you are interested please contact me at my address or give me a call. You would be in-charge of planning the meal and doing the shopping. We have a volunteer who will do your shopping if you would like help with that part of the project. Whatever you spend on the food you prepare is reimbursed from the donations we collect that night. So far we have collect enough to cover expenses with a little left over. Hope to see you at dinner on Feb 11 --dinner is served from 5:30-6:30 pm. Janet LaBorie, Coordinator Invitation from Aldersgate UMC Bishop Mark Webb will be preaching at Aldersgate UMC (4115 Dewey Ave) on Sunday, February 12 th at their 11:00 am service. You are invited to join them in worship and for a dish-to-pass meal following service. For more information call

If you haven t already, please start saving now. For the 2017 sale we are going to assess our needs internally and any monies we make beyond that assessment will be given to a local charity, to be determined at a later date. 10 Prepared by: Ed Earnhart, Chair Finance & Stewardship AUDITOR NEEDED Hilton United Methodist Church is in need of someone to fill the Auditor position for Jim Butts and Sam Emerson have been our Auditors for the last two years. This year Jim became a member of the Finance Counting Team which disqualifies Jim as being our Auditor and Sam has expressed that his term is complete. The Auditor is not a member of the Finance Committee. This is an independent position. The practical working definition of Auditor in the United Methodist Local Church is as follows: A local church audit is an independent evaluation of the financial reports and records and the internal controls of the local church by a qualified person or persons for the purpose of reasonably verifying the reliability of financial reporting, determining whether assets are being safeguarded, and whether the law, the Discipline and policies and procedures are being complied with. During the last 2 years, Jim Butts and Sam conducted deep dive detailed audits which included audits of the internal controls. The extent of the audit is the privy of the Auditor. At a minimum there is a set of forms that need to be completed for the Upper New York Annual Conference (UNYAC). UNYAC requires the Local Church Audit Form to be completed by March 15, Examination of the audit form shows that at least the Auditor reviews the ledger transactions and bank account statements for irregularities.
