021 Book of Mormon Repent or Suffer by Mike Stroud (Transcribed by Carol Crisp) We've been asked to make a recording of these classes, so they can be listened to again on the internet. D&C 19:4 "And surely every man must repent or suffer, for I, God, am endless." So, here, in one verse, the Lord says that 'if we don't repent', what? We suffer. We want to talk a little bit about that. Let's take a minute and define what repentance is. I like to take things and put them into one word. I'd like to give you a one-word definition of 'repentance'. That one word would be 'change'. When you repent, you change. If you don't change, you're not repenting, and there are plenty of places for us to change. What we want to do is to change: have a change of mind. have a change of heart. have a change of views. how you see things ie. how you view yourself, the world, others, and God (and your relationship to him). All of these things are good definitions of the word 'repent'. Some people think that repentance means to 'stop sinning'. That is true. That's a part of it, isn't it? Let's look at D&C 58: This tells us how we can tell if a person has repented. "42 Behold, he who has repented of his sins, the same is forgiven, and I, the Lord, remember them no more. 43 By this ye may know if a man repenteth of his sins behold, he will confess them and forsake them. There are two ways we can tell if a person has repented, or changed. First of all, they confess their sins. Sometimes that needs to be done to a bishop, a branch president, a district president, stake president, or even a general authority. It always needs to be done to our Heavenly Father. Confession is always required as a part of the process. Then, two, forsake the sin. What does 'forsake the sins' mean? Student: You quit doing the thing. Mike: Yeah, you quit. You don't do it anymore. But, in a broader view, and this is what most people think repentance is, but in a bigger view, this is repentance. These kinds of things (see list above) are what's necessary. These all represent a change: change of mind, heart, views, and how you see things, or view yourself, how you view the world that you're in, how you view others and how you view your Father in Heaven. Those are all part of the process of repentance. Does that make sense? So, when we're repenting, these kinds of things take place. These kinds of changes take place. And, as we saw in the D&C, if you don't change, if this doesn't happen, then the Lord says 'you will suffer'. We want to know what that means. That's a main part of the lesson today, 'What does it mean to suffer?' "How", and I underline the word 'suffer', and I ask the question: How do we suffer, and why? What is it that causes suffering? What's the purpose of suffering, if we don't repent? So, if we're involved in this right here, we don't have to worry about that. If we are not involved in repenting, and everything that goes along with it, then suffering is something that we're looking at, as a result of a lack of repentance. Any thoughts or comments on that, before we go on? Let's go back to D&C 19. Did you know that repentance is a commandment? Did you know that it's not a suggestion, it's a commandment from God that you repent? Let's look at verse 13: Wherefore, I command you to repent, and keep the commandments which you have received by the hand of my servant Joseph Smith, Jun., in my name; Did you see right there, that repentance is a commandment? You can see the same thing in verse 15: Therefore I command you to repent repent, lest I smite you by the rod of my mouth, and by my wrath, and by my anger, and your sufferings be sore how sore you know not, how exquisite you know not, yea, how hard to bear you know not. There it is again. Now, look what happens if you don't repent. "repent, lest I smite you by the rod of my mouth, and by my wrath, and by my anger, and your sufferings be sore how sore you know not, how exquisite you know not, yea, how hard to bear you know not." I want to work on that for just a moment. I'm going to erase the board. Are we okay here? We've got a good definition of repentance, and the Lord said, 'you've got to repent, or suffer'. So, off it goes. Now, off to this side, I want to put, right in the middle of our board, I want to put "Repentance". And, off to the side of 'repentance', I want to put "The Law of Justice". And, off to the other side of 'repentance', I want to put "The Plan of Mercy". Why those two words? Why have I put 'the plan of mercy' on one side, and 'the law of justice' on the other side of repentance? Why have I done that? Student: If we repented of our sins, justice will be done, and also mercy. Mike: Very good. Justice and Mercy are exact opposites. The opposite of mercy is justice. So, these two things

stand opposed to each other. Is it possible for both of these laws to be kept and obeyed by one person? Is it possible to do that? Is it possible for you to both live within the law of justice and claim the plan of mercy, at the same time? Is that possible? Student: (didn't understand) Mike: Okay. You're right. So, let's come over to the law of justice, and talk about that for a minute. When we talk about the law of justice, we always use words like "Judge", okay. We talk about "The Bar of God". That's the big stand that the judge sits on. He's up higher. The judge sits in his chair. That's called 'the judges bar'. We talk about "Advocates". Another name for advocate is 'lawyer'. We talk about such terms as "guilty" or "innocent". We use words like "plead your cause". And, above 'the law of justice', I want to put a phrase called, "The Demands of Justice". Those are words that the scriptures use. So, what we can see, brothers and sisters, is, the law of justice is a very legal-centered concept. It has to do with laws. It's interesting that in the scriptures, that the law of justice refers to it as a 'male', a male pronoun. Let me show you. Go to Alma 42:24, and let me show you this. Take a look at this: "24 For behold, justice exerciseth all his demands, (Notice what it just said? 'exerciseth all his demands'. Notice that the word used there is "his". So, here the scripture refers to justice in the male pronoun.) and also mercy claimeth all which is her own; and thus, none but the truly penitent are saved." So, here, we find that mercy is a female, and we use the word "her". Isn't that interesting, that the scriptures refer to justice as 'his' and they refer to mercy as 'her'? Why do you think that is? Why do you think justice isn't referred to as 'her'? Why is justice male, and mercy a female pronoun? Student: I guess it's because women are merciful, and the man is very???. (laughing) Mike: Yes, he is. That is exactly right. So, the husband and wife, mom and dad, have a child. The child does something wrong, and Dad comes home and says, "You're gonna get it now, boy! You did the wrong thing. Come with me, you're gonna get a spank." Right? That's justice. And the mom says, "Whoa, wait a minute. Settle down a little bit. Take a deep breath. You need to hear the rest of the story. Maybe there's more you need to know." But, with the dad, it's 'right now justice'! The woman says, "Wait a minute." So, between justice and mercy, we can find a middle ground. Too much of one over the other is not good. So, the question comes up, "Can mercy 'rob' justice?" No! So, they both have to be satisfied, see? Have you ever seen a picture of the statue of the "Lady Justice"? Ever seen that? It's a woman, right? In one hand she has scales, balances. Another one is a sword, and her eyes are blindfolded. Why is that? Why is 'Justices eyes' blindfolded? The English word is 'unbiased'. Now, the sword would represent which of these two laws? The Law of Justice, or the Law of Mercy? Which would the sword be? The sword is justice. And, the scales over here, where we look at both sides, and we see which one balances. She stands in the middle, and justice is fair. You have to have them both. You can't have one without the other, and the one cannot rob the other. Okay? Now, I'm going to erase a couple of things here and come over here to "Justice". Justice has a tendency to be 'absolute'. The Law of Justice can be broken into two parts, so, let's break the 'law of justice' down. Part 1: Obedience always results in blessings. Always. This is a part of the law of justice. Part 2 is: Disobedience always results in punishment. Always. This law is the law that makes sure that if you break the commandment, or if you're disobedient to God, then there is a punishment affixed. That's the word the scriptures use. It's 'fixed to it'. The other side is, that with every obedient act of faith and obedience, there is a blessing 'fixed to it'. This is an eternal law, and God operates under this law. So, when any of His children break a commandment, there is always going to be a punishment attached. Disobedience results in things like: misery, loss of light and truth, and banishment from God's presence. These are some of the consequences or punishments for breaking God's laws, and they're fixed. You cannot excuse these, and just say, "I'm going to make them disappear." You can't, because this law up here, (look at this word) DEMANDS punishment for violated law. It demands it. And, God has to allow the law of justice to be paid. The other side, of blessings, is happiness, and all the opposites: gain, light, and truth, and eventually, dwell in God's presence, and have what we call "Eternal Life". These are the consequences of obedience to the law of justice. All of this is on this side. This is the law of justice, and these are the consequences for obedience, and these are some of the consequences for disobedience. That's clear, isn't it? Now, let's go on over to Alma 42:12. We'll go one verse at a time here. "12 And now, there was no means to reclaim men from this fallen state, which man had brought upon himself because of his own disobedience;

So, now look. Here we are, and let's take man, now. Let's not talk about Adam and Eve, but let's talk about us. When we come into this life, we commit sins. We break God's laws. It is impossible for God to reclaim us and bring us back into his presence. Why? Because 'no unclean thing can dwell in His presence.' So, if we're unclean, it's impossible for God to invite us back to live with him and be like he is. He is holy; we are unholy. He is pure and clean; we are sinful. As long as that condition remains, it's impossible for us to be reclaimed back. So, that's the problem. Let's go to verse 13 now: "Therefore, according to justice, the plan of redemption could not be brought about, only on conditions of repentance of men in this probationary state, yea, this preparatory state; for except it were for these conditions, mercy could not take effect except it should destroy the work of justice. Now the work of justice could not be destroyed; if so, God would cease to be God." Did you see what Alma just said there? There's a lot in that verse, but let's just concentrate on one part of what Alma said. He said that if God were to bypass this law (and remember that when you break a commandment, there has to be a punishment. There has to be, and if the Lord were to say, "Just this once, we won't attach a punishment. We'll let you get by this time. If you promise to be a good boy from here on out, I will forgive this debt at this point. ") and, if God did that, what's the last words in that verse? God would cease to be God. He can't excuse the demands of justice. That's what that verse is saying. These are not excusable. Now, one of the good things about the law of justice is, remember the blindfold on the lady? The law of justice doesn't care (watch this) WHO pays the demands. It doesn't care. It doesn't matter if it's male or female. It doesn't care. If Sister S. breaks the law, and the law of justice says, "You owe me, you owe me a debt. You broke the law, and you owe me a debt." Sister S. says, "I can't pay the debt, but I have a friend who can." And, the law says, "I don't care who pays it. I don't care if you pay it, or if your friend pays it. All I care is, it gets paid." That's how this law works, up here. That's why justice is blindfolded. She doesn't care who pays the debt. She only cares what? Somebody pays it. It cannot be excused. That's the point, okay? Got a feeling for that now? If God were to try and excuse it, at that moment, he would cease to be God, and everything in the universe would go back into chaos. Everything would disappear into chaos. So, these demands have to be met. The price, the debt, has to be paid. But, this law doesn't care WHO does it. Any questions on that now? Now, watch! In between the law of mercy and the law of justice, we put "Repentance". And, under repentance, I put something that verse 13 talks about: "the plan of redemption". Now, let me tell you what this word means, in case you have forgotten. Redemption means: "To buy back something previously owned, with a price". So, what that means is, an owner owns something, and loses it, or it's stolen, or it's kidnapped, or it's taken away. Your possession is now gone, and you don't have it anymore. So, whoever stole it comes to you and says, "Do you want your property back?" "Yes". "Okay, it will cost you something." So, you're now having to pay for something that was your own. You're not paying for something that somebody else owned. You're paying for something that is your own property. That's redemption. That's what the word means. You have to buy back, with a price, something that belonged to you in the first place, and was stolen from you, or separated from you. It was taken away. Okay? Now, this verse 13 says that the plan of redemption has something called 'conditions'. If you look at that verse, they are called 'conditions of repentance'. Isn't that what was said in that verse? Another word for 'conditions' is 'requirements'. So, if we repent, what we're doing is, we're meeting some requirements. Someone is requiring something from us, in order for us to even repent. We're meeting requirements. Look at the verse, 'except it were for these conditions,' meaning, unless these conditions are met, there can be no mercy. Did you see that? So, the plan of mercy can only work if there are conditions of repentance that are met. In other words, here is what it boils down to. If you don't repent, there is no mercy. See how that works? That's the simpleness of it. If you do repent, there is mercy. Mercy from what? What is it I'm trying to escape? What's on the board up there? Repent or suffer. So watch. If I repent, and the plan of mercy comes in, this (suffering) doesn't happen. If I don't repent, the plan of mercy can't operate, and the plan of justice comes in, and takes the payment, and you suffer. See how that works? That's how it works. There's a couple of things to remember here, brothers and sisters. First, without repentance there is no mercy. So, if you want to have the plan of mercy operate in your life, you must repent, or there can be no mercy. If there is no mercy, then all there is is justice, and justice will come for you at some future time and say, "You owe me. Come with me and you will pay the price of your sins". That will cause you to suffer. If you look at D&C 19 where the Lord says, 'I command you, repent'. It's a commandment. So, the Lord is commanding us to exercise these conditions, for what reason? So this will start to operate. So that the plan of

mercy will operate. If you don't repent, this plan is inoperable. Here is something else you want to remember. The conditions of repentance and the plan of mercy are only here because of the atonement of Jesus Christ. If there was no atonement, there would only be justice! Without the atonement of Christ, there is only justice, and every one of us would be exposed to the full demands of justice, with no hope of escape. So, what does repentance do? It offers us a way to be rescued. Rescued from what? The demands of Divine Justice, that all of us in this room are under the demands of justice. Why? Because we've all sinned. We've all broken God's commandments, every one of us, and you can't pay the debt yourself. You can't do it. As hard as I want, if Sister S. goes out and robs a bank, she goes to a bank and pulls out a gun and says, "Give me all your money", and they arrest her, they take her to court, and say, "You're guilty of bank robbery and we're going to put you into prison for 65 years". Then, Elder Stroud comes along and says, "This is a friend of mine. Put me in prison in her place. Let her go, and put me in prison." Will the judge do it? No, he won't. I cannot come in and pay the price for her sin, or your sin, or anybody else's sin. Why? I didn't commit the crime, and the law says, 'the person who commits the crime must pay the price. "Justice" says that also, unless we meet a condition here. See how that works? This is how the atonement works. Let me give you an example. Let me tell a little story here. President Diggs wants to have a new house. He goes to the bank and says, "I want to have a new house". The bank says, "Okay, we'll loan you the money to build your new house, but here are the conditions of repayment. You will pay us so much $, with interest, every month, for the next 15 years, to pay off the debt. The bank people ask him if this agreement is okay with him. President Diggs says, "Yeah, that's okay. I'm healthy, I'm strong, I'll be able to do it. My farm is producing well. Everything's going well; I can make that payment. " "Good". So, he signs the paper and the bank gives him the money. Now, you go out, and build yourself a nice little house, right? But, after two years, your ranch and your farm isn't producing like it should. There's no rain in the Philippines, and the crops didn't grow, and insects got into the bananas, and the coconuts started falling from the trees. Now, all of a sudden, your note, your payment comes due, and you can't meet the payment. One month goes by, then two months go by, and the bank is saying, "You owe us. You need to get in and pay your debt. Remember your contract here?" "Yeah, I'm working on it. I'll have it next month, I promise." The third month rolls around and all of a sudden, there is a knock at the door. There, at the door, is a lawyer with a police officer next to him. And they say, "We're going to take you to jail. You're going to go to the judge now. You've broken your contract. You're not fulfilling your contract. You're not honorable. We're going to take you, and we're going to take your house. We're going to take your ranch and everything you've got, to pay back the debt that you owe us." You say, "What about my wife? What about my children?" "I don't care about your wife and children. That's your problem. We only care about our money, and we're going to take your assets to get our money, and then we're going to throw you in jail for violating the contract." That happens every day. This is a very true-life situation. So, Bro. Diggs is sitting in the prison cell and thinking, "What am I going to do?" He's worried about his family. He's worried about what's going to happen. A good friend of Bro. Diggs hears about his situation, and the good friend comes and visits him in jail. He says, "Bro. Diggs, I can help you out." "You can?" "Yes, I can help you out. I can get you out of prison. I can pay your debt off to the bank, you can still own your home, your wife and children will have a place to stay, you'll have your farm, you'll have your ranch, and I'll do all of that for you." You look at him and say, "Oh, thank you so much." He says, "However, there are conditions. I will pay off your first contract holder, but I want you to make a contract with me." You say, "Anything." "I will set the conditions, and they will be easier to be met. You'll still have to do something. But, you will be able to do it. You'll keep your property, your home and everything. All I want you to do is accept me as your new creditor. Now you won't owe the bank, you'll owe me. Will you accept me as your new creditor?" You fall down at his feet and say, "Yes, Yes. I would love to have you be my creditor, because you're my friend

and I know you care about me." He says, "All I want you to do is meet certain conditions. You do what I ask you to do, so that you will be blessed, and you accept me, as your new creditor. Those are the conditions. Will you do that?" President Diggs says, "Absolutely!" Okay? So, now watch. Somebody stepped in, and took President Diggs' debt, and paid it. The bank doesn't care who pays it. If President Diggs can't pay the debt, and Mike Stroud comes in and says, "I'm here to pay off President Diggs' debt", will they let me do it? They'll do it just like that! The bank doesn't care who pays the debt. They only care that they get their money. So, I am able. I have enough money to do that. So, I go and do that for two reasons. Why do I do that? One: because I'm able, and two: because I love that man and his family. But, you still have to meet some conditions. But, the conditions I will give you will make you happier, and will prepare you so that you can have everything that you've ever wanted, and be happy in eternity. So, who is it that steps in-between here, and pays the debt? It's Jesus Christ. He's the friend that was willing and able to come in and do it. But, he doesn't just pay it off and say, "There you go." No, you have to meet certain conditions. If you meet certain conditions, this plan of mercy, which is your mediator, the Savior, comes in and meets the demands. So, that's erased, and now, you have a contract, an agreement with him. What's the new contract called? The new contract that you make with the Savior is called 'a covenant'. That's the new contract. Over here, there wasn't any covenant/contract. It was just: you break the law, you owe me. You broke the law, so I'm going to get payment. Over here, the Lord pays the debt and then says, "I want you to enter into an agreement with me"...a new contract, and we call it a covenant. And, watch: If you keep your covenants, the law of justice will never have a claim on you. It will never touch you, and you will never have to worry about this law. If you do what? Keep your covenant, your agreement...the conditions of your redemption. 'I bought him. I bought him right out of jail. I paid a price'. And, if I'm Heavenly Father, and I send my son to redeem my children, I'm buying back what was mine, in the first place, my own family, that has been stolen because of sin, temptation and disobedience. See how that works? Does this make sense? Let's look at a couple of things in Alma 42:14. And thus we see that all mankind were fallen, and they were in the grasp of justice; yea, the justice of God, which consigned them forever to be cut off from his presence. Do you know what a 'grasp' is? Watch, this is a grasp! (laughing) It's a good word, isn't it? We'll be cut off from his presence because we're unclean and he is pure, and that separates us. Now, we're going to talk about this side of the plan. "15 And now, the plan of mercy could not be brought about except an atonement (Without the atonement, there would be no plan of mercy.) should be made; therefore God himself atoneth for the sins of the world, to bring about the plan of mercy, to appease the demands of justice, that God might be a perfect, just God, and a merciful God also." Do you know what the word 'appease' means? 'The plan of mercy appeases the demands of justice'. Appease means it erases it, answers it, pays the debt, satisfies the demands of justice. Let's look at the next one: 16 Now, repentance could not come unto men except there were a punishment, which also was eternal as the life of the soul should be, affixed opposite to the plan of happiness, which was as eternal also as the life of the soul. This is a little confusing. It's asking a question. Watch. It said, 'Could there be repentance, if there was no punishment?' Could we have repentance without punishment? No. Why? What's Alma saying there? You wouldn't repent, because you have no fear of punishment. There has to be punishment, or there can't be repentance. Nobody's going to repent, unless there's a fear of the consequence. What's the Lord saying? What's the consequence? Suffer. That's the consequence. Let's look at something else. Let's look at Alma 42:22: But there is a law given, and a punishment affixed, and a repentance granted; which repentance, mercy claimeth; (See that? Watch. If you repent, this plan of mercy begins to operate. Repentance starts the plan of mercy.) otherwise, justice claimeth the creature and executeth the law, and the law inflicteth the punishment; if not so, the works of justice would be destroyed, and God would cease to be God. So, is this important? Is the law of justice necessary? Absolutely. If there is no law of justice, let's take this away. Is there any need for repentance and mercy? No! If you are not drowning, if you are not in danger, there's no need for a rescue. That's what he just said there, right? See how perfect this plan is? Everything just fits in perfectly, with the purpose of God. So, justice is necessary, and mercy claims the repentant, and saves them from the suffering of justice. One more verse, and I love this verse. Watch this:

23 But God ceaseth not to be God, and mercy claimeth the penitent, and mercy cometh because of the atonement; and the atonement bringeth to pass the resurrection of the dead; and the resurrection of the dead bringeth back men into the presence of God; and thus they are restored into his presence, to be judged according to their works, according to the law and justice. Penitent is another word for repentance. So, mercy claims the repentant. And the atonement brings to pass the resurrection of the dead, and the resurrection of the dead brings men back into the presence of God, and thus, they are restored to his presence. 24 For behold, justice exerciseth all his demands, and also mercy claimeth all which is her own; and thus, none but the truly penitent (repentant) are saved. Then, he asks this question: 25 What, do ye suppose that mercy can rob justice? I say unto you, Nay; not one whit. If so, God would cease to be God. So, justice is served, the price is paid, but it takes a mediator, it takes a third person to come in and do that. You and I cannot pay the penalty of our sins. We can't do it. It takes God to come down and pay the price of sin. Isn't it interesting that it requires somebody who is sinless in order to pay the price of sin? Isn't that interesting? A sinner cannot pay the price of sin. It requires someone who has no sin. That's the law. So, Christ, who is the only innocent one, the only guiltless one, the only pure one, comes down because of two things. He is (1) able, and (2) because he loves us. He comes in and he says, 'I'll pay the price'. And, by the way, he did. Can I tell you that for every living human being, the demands of justice have been paid for. Justice has no more claim on the children of men, and says, "Wait a minute, you paid for everybody, but you didn't pay for Carlos S. Jesus, you paid for everybody, but you skipped him." No, everybody has been paid for. These demands have been met. And, now we're under a new contract. Let's go to D&C 19, and we'll pull this all together. What have we been doing here? What's this all about? We need to come to the 'suffer' part. So, does that mean, now, that Jesus has paid for your sins, and you don't ever have to worry about suffering demands? Is that what it means? Is future suffering now done away with, because Jesus paid for your sins? You don't have to worry about suffering anymore? He paid for the sins, didn't he? Yes, you might still have to suffer. Watch. If you break this covenant, after Jesus paid the debt, Jesus Christ, Sister S., has paid for all your sins and mine. It's done. This law is satisfied. But, the new covenant says this, 'if you break your covenant with me, then this law comes in and a second time has to be paid for.' Who pays for it a second time? Jesus? YOU DO! Let's go to D&C 19:16. This is something that members of the church have a hard time understanding. I know I did for years and years. 16 For behold, I, God, have suffered these things for all, that they might not suffer if they would repent; So, Jesus suffered for whose sins? His? Who did Jesus suffer for? His own life and actions? Did the law of justice have a claim on Christ, ever? No! Why? Because he was completely and totally obedient. He never once had a wrong thought, a wrong word, a wrong deed, never. He was completely innocent and without sin. So, now watch. It says, 'I paid these things for you that you might not suffer' and then you ought to circle this big word: IF. "If they would repent". 17 But if they would not repent they must suffer even as I; Wait a minute, I thought he already paid for all the sins, and there is no more suffering. There isn't, if you keep your covenants. He paid for your sins on conditions, on a covenant, and that covenant says, 'if you break this covenant, at some future time, the law of justice is going to look and say, 'awww, come with me, and you will have to pay for that sin.' Here's the sad part. Jesus already paid for them. Look at the next verse. This is what the payment for sin caused. 18 Which suffering caused myself, even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore, and to suffer both body and spirit and would that I might not drink the bitter cup, and shrink 19 Nevertheless, glory be to the Father, and I partook and finished my preparations unto the children of men. Now, look what the Savior described for Gethsemane and on the cross, when he paid for Mike Stroud's sins. All of them. I caused that, and so did you. That's because of us, right? He paid it, and justice says, "Okay, I'm satisfied. I have no more claim, unless these people who are in a new contract with you, if they break their contract, then I can come back a second time and get you. Then, you will have to pay for your sins a second time, with no help from the Savior. You'll have to pay for it yourself." Here's the sad thing. Payment was only needed to be done once. But, if we rebel and are disobedient, we will cause the same sin to have to be paid for a

second time. Do you know what that's called, in the scriptures, when that happens? Let me tell you what that's called. When you violate your contract, violate your covenant, and you now have to suffer for the same sin that was already paid for by the Savior. It is paid for the second time, a second payment. When you violate your covenant, and the conditions of the new contract of grace and mercy, when you violate that, and you break your covenant with him, then the law of justice comes back and you have to pay for your own sins, a second time. That's called 'trampling under your feet the Holy One of Israel'. That's what that means. This is what you do to the Savior. You now have to unnecessarily pay for a sin that he already bled for. Got a feeling for that? See how that works? Now, with that in mind, look at the last verse. How many times has the Lord said to repent? Go to D&C 19:4 And surely every man must repent or suffer, for I, God, am endless. Verse 13: Wherefore, I command you to repent, and keep the commandments which you have received by the hand of my servant Joseph Smith, Jun., in my name; Verse 15: Therefore I command you to repent repent, lest I smite you by the rod of my mouth, and by my wrath, and by my anger, and your sufferings be sore how sore you know not, how exquisite you know not, yea, how hard to bear you know not. Verse 17: But if they would not repent they must suffer even as I; (Now go to verse 20) 20 Wherefore, I command you again to repent, lest I humble you with my almighty power; and that you confess your sins, lest you suffer these punishments of which I have spoken, of which in the smallest, yea, even in the least degree you have tasted at the time I withdrew my Spirit. Why is the Lord commanding people to repent or suffer so many times? Why does he want us to repent so badly? Student comment. Mike: Do you know how he humbles you? With his almighty power. Do you know how that works? It works when the law of justice comes in a second time and takes payment from you. That's being humbled by his almighty power. That's what that means. And, it's unnecessary, brothers and sisters! This is why the plan of redemption and the plan of mercy is also referred to as the great plan of happiness. And, this is why the plan of disobedience is called the plan of misery. These are opposites. The reason God commands us to repent is that he doesn't want us to do this. "I've opened the way for you. I've prepared the way so that you can escape the suffering that comes when the demands of justice say 'you owe me'. I've paid that. Come and accept me as your Savior, make a covenant with me, stay repentant, repent, call upon my name, seek for the gifts of the spirit and if you do, this thing remains paid". You'll never have to worry about that. But, if you violate your covenant, this is going to come after you again. And this time, he won't be able to help you. You'll be on your own. And, he describes this: "18 Which suffering caused myself, even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore, and to suffer both body and spirit and would that I might not drink the bitter cup, and shrink ". He is describing the pain he went through, and pleading with us to not do this. 'I already did it, don't do it. Accept my gift, and the plan of mercy to work completely and fully in your life. That's my gift. Why? Because I love you. ' So, when he comes to you and he sticks out his arms and says, "Come unto me", what's he saying? 'Come unto me so that repentance and mercy can operate in your life, and you won't have to suffer like I already did for you.' Thoughts? Now, you understand what this means. Repent or suffer. I want you to know that I have a firm witness by the power of the Holy Ghost that Jesus Christ paid the price for the demands of justice for Mike Stroud's sins. I don't talk about anybody else. I talk about me. And here's something else you need to know. If I was the only person that ever lived on this earth, that needed a rescue, if it was just me, he would have come, just for me. That's how precious I am, and how precious you are, to him. If it was just YOU, he would have done the same thing. I testify to you that's true, and that the atonement has power to change our natures; change your hearts. We look at things differently; we view the world; we view ourselves, and others, differently, when the conditions of repentance and the plan of mercy 'kick in' and start to operate. We look at things differently. Just since I've been in the Philippines, I look at things differently. I have a different view that God has given me because of repentance and faith and submission and humility, and those things I've tried to do. He's given me a different view. I will never be the same, ever again, from having been in the Philippines, and worked with, and loved and served you folks. I'll never be the same. It's forever changed my views and my heart. Sister Stroud's the same way. We talk about it all the time. Today is the anniversary of leaving for the MTC in Provo one year ago today.

I can't tell you how much one year has done for us. We have grown more. We have become more sensitive. We have become more faithful. Our hearts have been changed more in this last year, I'll speak for me, but, in this last year, than any other 12-month period in my life. It's because of this plan. This looks a little complicated up there because we broke it down, but really, it boils down to one thing. OBEY! Just obey. We can take all of that and put it into one word. Keep his commandments. If you do, everything works. Mercy works. The atonement works. Everything works, and it all comes down to obedience. The more obedient you are, the greater the power that comes from the plan of redemption. The more strictly obedient you are, the more God sends down his gifts, and his power, and his divine nature. It changes you quicker and more dramatically. It's all based on your obedience. Obedience is the key, and disobedience does just the opposite. I testify to you these things are true, by the witness of the Holy Ghost. I felt the Holy Ghost today, as we've taught this lesson. And, brothers and sisters, thank God for the Book of Mormon, because you can't get this out of the Bible. It is in the plainness and simplicity of the Book of Mormon. This 42nd Chapter of Alma, nowhere else in the scriptures is there anything like it. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
