5 CHAPTER TWO TITLES Titles CROSS, E. N. Life and Times of C. H. Mackintosh Many will know the initials CHM belong to the evangelical and edifying author, Charles Henry Mackintosh. Born in 1820 in Ireland, he was converted at around 18 years of age. In 1854 he gave up his secular work to serve the Lord full-time, and became a noted preacher around the British Isles and an author of many books and pamphlets on a variety of spiritual subjects. The influence of his ministry has been world-wide. Moody, the famous American evangelist, wrote of his collection of CHM s writings that he: would rather part with my entire library, excepting my Bible, than with these writings. They have been to me a very key to the Scriptures. To our knowledge this is the first ever biography of this faithful servant of God. It makes a worthy companion of the author s earlier work on one of CHM s contemporaries: The Irish Saint and Scholar, a biography of William Kelly. In his inimitable style, he captures something of CHM s character, as well as the episodes of his life and the issues he encountered, including his early days, his career as a writer and in other service, his involvement in the 1859 revival, his views on church matters and other controversies of his times, and his closing days at the end of the 19 th century. The author looks at three perspectives, historical, prophetical and spiritual. The historical view provides the reader with some very useful background information. He makes a very useful comparison with Moses blessing the twelve tribes in Deuteronomy. The prophetical aspect is dispensational and pre-millennial. The spiritual application of the failings of the tribes to Christian life is very helpful. This book is easy to digest and is well worth reading. His example stimulates us to be better followers of Christ. Many know Samson only as a strong man, or as a dramatic figure in his relationship with Delilah. Often these are distorted ideas about biblical facts. 11 CHAPTER TWO TITLES BULL, G. T. The Rock and the Sand Glimpses of the Life of Faith This was the mature and final work of the veteran missionary to Tibet, Geoffrey T. Bull. He is remembered especially for his period of suffering in a Chinese thought reform prison and for the books that were written immediately after his release in the 1950s. Those books secured excellent reviews in the national press. His style was reminiscent of John Bunyan, wrote one reviewer. Chapter Two often have second-hand copies of his earlier books, which are rich in literary value as well as spiritual worth. Do ask for these too. ISBN pp, pb Order Code BURTON, A. H. (or sometimes attributed to SCOTT, W.) Symbols of the Apocalypse, briefly defined The book of the Revelation is often neglected due to its apparent obscurity and use of symbols. But the book is a revelation and not obscure at all. This little booklet is a handy compendium giving numerous crossreferences to other scriptures. (translator & editor) Christians Gathered in the Name of the Lord Jesus A simple explanation of Biblical principles regarding how Christians should meet for fellowship. The presentation will appeal to all who have grasped the NT teaching of church order The booklet is aimed at those in traditional, state churches or where there is blatant deviation from Pauline truth. Believers Magazine ISBN pp, booklet 0.30 Order Code The Irish Saint and Scholar - A biography of William Kelly An interesting, illustrated biography of one of the foremost men among the so-called PlymouthBrethren.... It is clear from the very outset that this book, which charts the life of William Kelly, is thoroughly researched and the fruit of extensive reading. As the author states of Kelly, Like his mentor Darby, he left no diaries for our study... Kelly would rather we learnt more of our Bibles and Christ, since the prime and constant theme of his written and oral ministry was to this end. Edwin Cross writes about the life of one of the foremost scholars of his day and, yet, one who used that ability to defend the truth of scripture from fierce attack. Whilst the Oxford Movement may mean little to many today, it was then a powerful force for evil. Together with social and political factors, the author seeks to paint the background of the life of a man who was undoubtedly used of God. Few have been as prolific a writer and distributor of literature as Kelly. Even his mentor, John Nelson Darby, owed much to the work of William Kelly in seeing his collected writings published. This is a fascinating book and one that demonstrates the author s obvious affection for his subject. However, the divisions of the system with which Kelly had become associated cast a shadow over a life which had, otherwise, achieved so much. Being part of that system the author is at pains to support the stance that Kelly took and the weakening of testimony that ensued. Overall, this is an interesting book that is recommended as one from which we can learn a lot about the early days of a movement that restored so much of Testament church principles and the truth of the rapture that had been lost to generations. Race This magazine series may be justly considered the very best periodical ever produced from the so called Brethren. It is a veritable encyclopaedia of valuable ministry touching on every book in the Bible and many Biblical subjects. The index is comprehensive. Its title is certainly no misnomer.
