1 Volume 33 September 2011 Number 09 Church Notes by Pastor Bennie Durham The Lord is good to us! I am always amazed at how much the Lord has blessed us at MFBC! In tough times, He is still providing our needs through the faithfulness of His people here. I want to challenge everyone to continue or start being faithful in your attendance and giving. There is so much that needs to be done to further the Kingdom and you will miss a blessing if you are not a part of what God is doing through MFBC! God s Word is very clear on what He expects from us in giving back what He has blessed us with. In Malachi 3, God declares all who do not bring the tithe and an offering as a thief! I want you to think about where you are right now with your obedience to the Lord in giving. A tithe is 10% of your income. That is not hard to know what it means. That means that consistently you give from what you earn. If you are not at church one week, you make it up when you return. Too many people are in financial problems because they are not faithful with their tithe. We are also to bring an offering, which is above our tithe. Some can give more than others in the area of offerings, but everyone s offering is important in the Kingdom of God! Some time back we had an Everyone Tithe Sunday. Our regular offering that day was more than $20,000. I would dare say that even then, not everyone tithed, but look at what happened! If everyone would tithe, we could pay off our debt, do more mission work than ever before and do more to reach our own community! I want to encourage you to start this new church year in September by giving your tithes and offering regularly! Malachi 3:10 says to test God with your tithes and offerings and watch Him work in your life! You can trust Him! Our Building Fund Day will be Sunday, September 25. Our goal this year is $100, Please be praying about what the Lord wants you to give. This year, the first part of the offering will be used to repair several things around the church, such as sealing and striping the parking lot. We will also bring our reserve fund for our FLC payments back up to $ Then the balance will be paid on the loan for the FLC. This will be an exciting time as we get several projects done that have been put off for a while. We will have a list showing those projects soon. If we all give as we are able, we can meet and exceed our goal! Mark your calendar and plan on being here that day. We have an exciting video showing the FLC from ground breaking to completion that will be shown during the lunch after the service! We will meet in the FLC for service at 10:00. Sunday School will be at 8:45. Mark your calendar and pray what your part will be in this exciting offering! God is good to us, let s be faithful in all we do! I love you all and look forward to what God is going to do!

Spanish Missions Update Partnerships are surely a blessing! For Partnerships continue to bless our Spanish outreach efforts. Recently I was made aware that North Greenville University had sheets, pillows and pillow cases on hand that could be picked up and used by any church. Arrangements were made and Rhonda and I made a trip in the mission van. At the end of the evening we could not even see each other due to the bags of items that had been donated and packed in the van by NGU students! The next Thursday evening with help from Rondall and workers from both SMASH and the youth department we set up at the Storehouse and gave out these items to folks in need. We also carried the van to the migrant camps and nearby mobile home parks. It was a great night and so special to see how God had placed so many willing workers in the process. Items that had been stored away were now being used for people with real needs. Please continue to pray for the work in the Spanish outreach. In His Service, Jimmy Emergency contact information is crucial in getting assistance or in notifying someone in the event of an accident. The FAST members are working to assist in any way with the steps needed to enter this information into the SCDL network. Our DMV began a program in June that has been very successful in other states. Emergency contact names and numbers can be entered by citizens into the DMV database. In the event of emergency, law enforcement can pull this info and make the necessary contacts. The process takes only a few minutes but it is entirely a volunteer process. We will be having events at church to assist or if you have any questions just see me on how to enter at your home computer. Thank you for your support of the FAST ministry and we continue to seek to serve and protect you! 7 Awareness of Breast Cancer When I was 14 years old my mother found a lump in her breast, she was in her mid40 s. I was a rather silent observer of the events of the next few weeks. It was disturbing to see her upset and sense the tension in our home before she was scheduled for surgery. Three weeks later, when my dad came home from the hospital the day of the surgery he was obviously shaken. The only thing he told me was that it was malignant. I didn t want to ask him questions because he seemed emotional enough. So after he left the room I went straight to the dictionary Webster let me know that malignant meant it was a disease that might be fatal. My mom was in the hospital 3 weeks. We were not allowed to visit the first week because she had some sort of radioactive implant treatment and was on isolation precautions. The surgery was extensive. After she was home, I recall her walking her fingers up the wall to regain her ability to move her arm fully. I also remember having someone come in to help do house work for a while. These memories are vivid for me until today. My mother was thankful for the disfiguring surgery because it gave her hope for living. She had no recurrence of the cancer and died at the age of 81, not from cancer. Treatment for breast cancer has changed quite a bit in the last 40 years, but the fear that strikes in a woman s heart when a lump is found is the same.the turmoil in the hearts of those that love her is just as piercing as it was 40 years ago for my family. Risk factors for breast cancer include: Age: Half of all women diagnosed are over age 65. Weight: Being obese or overweight. Diet & Lifestyle: Lack of physical activity, a diet high in saturated fat, and alcoholic intake of more than two drinks per day. Menstrual & Reproductive History: Early menstruation or late menopause, having your first child at an older age or not having given birth, or taking birth control pills for more than ten years if you are under 35. Family & Personal History: A family history of breast cancer particularly a mother, sister. or a personal history of breast cancer or of benign (noncancer) breast disease. Medical & Other Factors: Dense breast tissue (often identified by a mammogram), past radiation therapy to the breast or chest area. A history of hormone treatments such as estrogen and progesterone, or gene changes including BRCA1, BRCA2, and others. An Early Breast Cancer Detection Plan should include: Beginning at age 20: Performing breast selfexams and looking for any signs of change. Age 20 to 39: Scheduling clinical breast exams every three years. By the age of 40: Having a baseline mammogram and annual clinical breast exams. Ages 40 to 49: Having a mammogram every one to two years depending on previous findings. Ages 50 and older: Having a mammogram every year. If you find a lump or something just is not the same, seek medical advice. Women, get your regular mammograms. A mammogram can detect a cancer up to 2 years before it can ever be felt by exam. And if there is a cancer, often treatment is not disfiguring, having only the lump removed. Don t delay because you are afraid. It will not go away if you ignore it. Be aware that 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer. And men, you can get it as well. So if you find a lump, get it checked out. Take care of your temple, Jo Gordon, FNP Strength and dignity are her clothing, And she smiles at the future. She opens her mouth in wisdom, And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
