THE HOWLING DAWG October 2012 "Duty is ours; consequences are God's." ~ General Thomas Jackson 16th Georgia Volunteer Infantry Regiment Company G "The Jackson Rifles" This FALL CAMPAIGN The Charge of the 16th at Andersonville What a year it has been for the 16th Georgia - one of the finest in current remembrance - from the intense drills of January and July, to Olustee, Manassas, Old Clinton, Kennesaw - everything just seemed to click. Naturally, the Fall Campaign was much anticipated and we -1-

were sure not disappointed. It began with a new event for us at Hurricane Shoals, in Jackson County, origin of Company G. We were there by the gracious invitation of Reverend & Mrs. Joey Young and were only able to make it there for Sunday but a good convoy of us went over in mid-september and had such a good time that we can't wait to go back. Toward the end of the month we set up camp under the old walnut tree at Nash Farm and enjoyed our second year there. Turning the page into October brought the familiar favorite of Andersonville and near perfect weather. We look forward to our annual Griswoldville encampment and memorial service in mid November and our Christmas gathering at the Cannonball House to write the final episodes of As is often the case, pictures tell a story much better than my meager words and with a host of talented photographers (Dixie Curtis, Beth Colvin, Tina Bradberry, Brenda Dobson, Ed Lusk, Amy Patton & Kellie Banks) on hand, this publication is infinitely more lively when the images say it so well HURRICANE SHOALS - September 16-2-

NASH FARM- September "Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves." Philippians 2:3-3-

ANDERSONVILLE- October 5-6 "The Republican party (of Lincoln) was solely responsible for carrying out the bloodiest war in American history against the American South, in order to destroy self-government. In South Carolina, a Republicanrigged postwar convention erected a corrupt political regime kept in power by Northern bayonets, carpetbaggers and newly-enfranchised freedmen." - Dr. Clyde Wilson -4-

" THERE WAS A MARRIAGE " (John 2:1) Jessie & Joel Joel's parents, Mary & Bruce; Joel & Jessie with Charles Whitehead In a 4 p.m. service at the Cannonball House, officiated by Reverend John Woods, Jessie Banks and Joel Whitehead, Jr. were married on the classic fall Saturday, of October 20, Jessie grew up around the campfires of the 16th Georgia and Joel joined the ranks past few years as an associate Chaplain. He also serves in the same capacity in the newlychartered Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp of The Unknown Soldier, #2218. The couple will make their home in Jones County and we wish them a long lifetime of happiness together and service to God. On behalf of the families of the newlyweds, we thank all who attended and gave of themselves to this a grand and memorable occasion. Naturally, security was tight for the occasion since it was well-attended by the 16th GA

It next goes into the history of slavery and how it was first legalized and why it continued. It covers Abraham Lincoln's ideas about the blacks and what he really felt about them, exposing the Emancipation Proclamation as the lie it was. GONE: A Photographic Plea For Preservation Price: $29.95 By Nell Dickerson, Shelby Foote, Robert Hicks - This powerfully moving volume that will change how you see the forgotten buildings that hide in obscurity across the Southern landscape. In the midst of the 150th commemoration, this writing draws attention not only to the architectural heritage devastated by the war but also the heritage we've lost since then to neglect, to poverty, and to shame. Those grand old homes whether a mansion or a cabin deserve our reverence and protection. Truths Of History (1920) By Mildred Lewis Rutherford Price: $ Introductions by Mauriel P. Joslyn and J.H. Segars. In today's society we are unaccustomed to writings as bold and direct as those penned by Mildred Lewis Rutherford ( ). The surviving papers of this Georgia educator provide an interpretation of the War History that is rarely found in modern texts. "Truths of History," first published in 1920, is an extraordinary presentation of historical viewpoints held by Southerners, past and present. Also included in this reprint is "Wrongs of History Righted," a fiery lecture given by Rutherford in 1914 in Savannah. Miss "Millie" Rutherford's insight into the mindset of Southerners is both fascinating and provocative. Few scholars were more keenly aware of the heart, mind and soul of the Confederate soldier than was this orator and Grand Historian of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Freedmen Fleeing Northern Race Prejudice Northern leaders sought ways to quell the fears of constituents envisioning emancipated slaves flooding northward in search of employment and wages; a theory was advanced that giving the freedmen political control of the defeated South would drain the northern Negroes back to the South as they fled northern race prejudice. Lincoln and other Republicans promoted ideas of colonization; U.S. Grant, as president, gave serious thought to acquiring Santo Domingo and Haiti as US territories and deporting the freedmen there. - Bernhard Thuersam, Chairman North Carolina War Between the States Sesquicentennial Commission. bernhard1848@att.net -7-

IN HONORED REMEMBERANCE Returning home from a church meeting, Robert E. Lee sat at the supper table and was about to say grace. The General could not say a word and slumped down in his chair. It was believed that he had a stroke - his condition seemed hopeless. A doctor told him, "General, you must make haste and get well - Traveler - has been standing too long in his stable and needs exercise." Lee could only shake his head as he knew he would never again ride his beloved horse. He would pass from this life on October 12, Calvin E. Johnson, Jr., Chairman of the SCV Confederate History and Heritage Month Committee ***** " Unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy " - Jude 1:24 The Bible makes a clear difference between happiness and joy. Joy is stronger, affecting both Heaven and earth. Joy is a portion of the fruit of the spirit in (Galatians 5:22) and certainly "fullness of joy" only occurs in God's presence. Mount Zion, a symbol God's presence, is considered to be "the joy of the whole earth" (Psalm 48:2). True joy is the strength (Nehemiah 8:10) that overthrows mourning, it comes fresh to you each morning (Psalm 30) and can be found in the form of an oil (Isaiah 61:3). In Heaven, there is more joy when one person repents than at any other time (Luke 15:7). The book of Esther tells says that victory over enemies also results in joy. The greatest joy that a parent can experience on earth is to see their see their children living right. (John 4), but there is no joy(proverbs 17:21) for the parents of a fool. We express joy by rejoicing - King David danced; sometimes there is shouting, loud, noisy celebrations and singing. Perhaps the most famous expression of joy was when the prenatal John the Baptist "leapt" in his mother when she first met the pregnant mother of Jesus. However, these are all instances of joy that WE, as humans, feel. What about God? Hebrews 4:15 says that He is not some "high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities." We do not worship and serve a God who is not touched by our weakness and rejection, by our grieving sorrow, our every wound and pain. If He can feel all that - and He can - is He unable to feel joy? What would give God that pleasure? YOU, just YOU. That is all He ever wanted and He paid a fierce price for you by shedding His own blood. Just like the parents we mentioned earlier, who delight in seeing their children doing well and living in obedience, God rejoices in His children - ME & YOU for the same reasons. I have done so much in my life to give God sorrow, shame, pain and regret. I pray that my remaining days - each and every one of them will give my Lord and Savior JOY. "Behold, this is the joy of His way " Job 8:9 jwd -8-

AND, FINALLY, A FEW MORE PICTURES FROM ANDERSONVILLE ***** "America has no north, no south, no east, no west. The sun rises over the hills and sets over the mountains, the compass just points up and down, and we can laugh now at the absurd notion of there being a north and a south. We are one and undivided - but there was a time." Sam Watkins - 1st Tenn. -11-

ANDERSONVILLE ANDERSONVILLE ANDERSONVILLE ANDERSONVILLE "Every man should endeavor to understand the meaning of subjugation before it is too late... It means the history of this heroic struggle will be written by the enemy; that our youth will be trained by Northern schoolteachers; will learn from Northern school books their version of the war; will be impressed by the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors, and our maimed veterans as fit objects for derision... It is said slavery is all we are fighting for, and if we give it up we give up all. Even if this were true, which we deny, slavery is not all that our enemies are fighting for. It is merely the pretense to establish sectional superiority and a more centralized form of government, and to deprive us of our rights and liberties." - Major General Patrick Ronayne Cleburne ***** UNKNOWN CSA DEAD AT THE ROCK Courtesy of WAYNE SCARBOROUGH - SCV CAMP The Rock is an unincorporated community in Upson County, located on GA 36, 7 miles northeast of Thomaston. -12-
